Coping with a loss

Warning: Spoilers
Death is much in the mind of Claire and Phil. Their old neighbor Walt, a man that had become a good friend of Luke, had died last night in a hospital. Naturally, the Dunphys are concerned about how their son is going to react to the man's demise. Claire has a problem when telling her son about it, she appears to be smiling, something that does not befit the occasion.

At Mitch and Cam the partners are preparing for the arrival of Merle Tucker. Naturally, the men are sprucing up the house and are putting together a bed for the guest. Their efforts are not exactly what one would expect from these two inexperienced people. Jay and his wife Gloria have been invited, something that Jay is trying to get away with, but cannot do.

Haley is having a party. Knowing her grandfather will be away, she talks Gloria into letting her use their pool providing she has a responsible chaperon. The person she has in mind is her "uncle" Manny. Gloria figures her son will be enjoying the party, so she gives the OK. Manny proves to be a fussy host looking after the house. Meanwhile Phil feels he has to bond with his daughter Alex by taking her to one of his favorite places.

The episode has its good moments. The mere idea of talking about death to a wider section of the viewing audience is not exactly what one would expect from a comedy such as "Modern Family". It is handled with care, in the screenplay written by Dan O'Shannon, Paul Corrigan and Brad Walsh. The chapter was directed by Michael Spiller, who has been in charge of most of the season's episodes and brings all the elements together.

I am so glad that I can enjoy Modern Family again as I used to. This episode is fun but still honest. Good
