On a solo tour last year, Nick Cave suddenly became self-aware. He built his career performing with bands — the Birthday Party, Grinderman, the Bad Seeds — but here he was with only a piano and Radiohead bassist Colin Greenwood supporting him. As they worked their way through nearly two dozen songs every night, Cave started thinking deeply about his songwriting.
“When I was singing these songs alone at the piano with just the bass — old songs, new songs, over 45 years of songwriting — they spoke their original intent,” he says, thoughtfully choosing his words on a call.

Will Smith became an A-lister in the ‘90s when he continuously gave hits such as Bad Boys, Independence Day, and Men in Black. The latter was a huge commercial success, and Smith was established as a bankable Hollywood superstar, despite all three films having a co-lead actor.
Smith then made the Wester-sci-fi comedy Wild Wild West with his Men in Black director Barry Sonnenfeld. Though it has a cult following now, the film was a box-office disaster upon release. It was one of the most expensive films ever made. Sonnenfeld reflected in his book why it did not work, and the reason was reportedly Kevin Kline.

George Clooney dodged a bullet by bailing on a role in one of the worst movies in Will Smith’s career. Clooney was initially cast as Artemus Gordon, one of the two protagonists, in Barry Sonnenfeld’s Wild Wild West. While the movie turned out to be bad, Clooney had essentially walked out of a film from the director of hits films like The Addams Family, Get Shorty, and Men in Black.

However, Sonnenfeld’s reputation wasn’t enough to save the film as the script had several issues and Clooney didn’t like the rewrites of the script. Once the Batman & Robin star bailed from the movie, he went on to join director David O. Russell’s Three Kings. While it was a critically acclaimed film, Clooney’s experience with the director was horrible.

Hulu’s adaptation of Little Fires Everywhere premiered at the very beginning of the 2020 Covid lockdown, and although it was nominated for several big Emmys that fall, the miniseries has become very fuzzy in my memory. One thing I do remember, however, is that in selecting the daughters of Reese Witherspoon’s character, the casting team found a pair of young actresses — Jade Pettyjohn and Megan Stott — who absolutely bore an uncanny resemblance to Reese Witherspoon.
Actually, I’d forgotten even that detail before sitting down to watch the new Netflix drama Penelope and immediately recognizing Stott — in large part because, if you’re going to make what is essentially an eight-part YA version of Wild, selecting a certifiable Reese Witherspoon doppelgänger as your lead makes a lot of sense.
Presumably, it isn’t wholly a coincidence. Penelope was created by Mark Duplass, who co-stars with Witherspoon on The Morning Show,...

I'm not the biggest fan of the "Deadpool" movies. They're less the advertised superhero parodies and more straight-up action-comedy superhero films, fourth-wall-breaking or not. They have their moments where they don't just play the genre beats, though, and the climax of the first "Deadpool" movie has two such moments.
One is when Wade (Ryan Reynolds) executes his nemesis Ajax (Ed Skrein), disregarding Colossus' (Stefan Kapičić) speech about the rare moments one gets to be a hero. Before that is a classic explosive fight of good vs. evil, complete with a damsel in distress hanging in the balance. The fight isn't as explosive as it could've been though, since Deadpool forgets his duffle bag full of guns in the taxi that he, Colossus, and Negasonic Teenage Warhead (Brianna Hildebrand) took to the showdown.
As the trio make their slow-motion, "Wild Bunch" style march to battle scored to Dmx's "X Gon' Give It To Ya,...

From Sept. 25 to Oct. 2, the 20th edition of Mexico’s Monterrey Film Festival will screen nearly 100 films, culled from world-class festivals, including Cannes, Sundance, Tribeca and SXSW. The festival will stage Mexican, Latin American and world premieres of fiction and documentary features, many by first-time film directors. Below are 10 outstanding titles:
“The Blue Star,” Javier Macipe, Spain, Argentina (Mexican premiere)
An Ibero-American co-production between Fernando Bovaira’s Mod Producciones of Spain (“Biutiful”), Macipe’s El Pez Amarillo, Cimarrón (“Society of the Snow”) and Prisma, Argentina, the 90s-set film centers on Mauricio, a famous Spanish rock musician who decides to travel across Latin America in a bid to reconnect with his roots. He meets Don Carlos, an aging musician who’s struggling despite having composed some of his country’s most famous folk songs. Carlos, like a musical Master Miyagi, takes in the visitor, and together they form a quirky, Quixote-like duo destined for commercial failure.

Take a spaceship and a bunch of misfits. Next, add a Spaghetti Western theme to all of it. It’s likely a recipe for an outlawish adventure, and Blue Manchu’s Wild Bastards aims to achieve this flair. But, there’s a little twist to this.
It is a roguelike strategy-based first-person shooter with a few looter-shooter mechanics. Sounds a bit much, doesn’t it? Wild Bastards tries to inculcate all of these, and for the most part, does justice to it all.
But, everything could have worked better together if not for the lack of balance that makes the game appeal to a very niche audience, and if you belong to part of an outlandish category of players enjoying a lot of things at once, this game might just be for you.

It is pretty evident by now that the tyranny of the World Government and the Celestial Dragons in One Piece is too brutal and cruel for the general public. They have been taking advantage of them, abusing them, and even killing them to maintain their authority as the Supreme Power of the One Piece world. However, there are some characters who are fighting against this tyranny.
Monkey D. Dragon | Credit: Toei Animation
The first and foremost is the Revolutionary Army, headed by Monkey D. Dragon. As Dragon has seen the evil atrocities of the World Government and the Nobles firsthand, he decided to form an organization that would battle against them. But he might not be the only one who is fed up with the government’s evil deeds.
Another character who has been irritated by the World Government for the longest time is Fujitora, the Admiral who was appointed after Akainu and Kuzan.

“You’ve gone too far this time / But I’m dancing on the Valentine / I tell you somebody’s fooling around / With my chances on the danger line.” Those were the opening lyrics to “The Reflex” by the English new wave band Duran Duran. And 40 years ago this summer they helped the group score their first number-one hit on the Billboard Hot 100. “The Reflex” may have been a “lonely child,” but the song propelled the group to unparalleled popularity at the time.
Originally formed in Birmingham, England, in 1978, Duran Duran actually had a bit of a rough start in their quest for mainstream success in the United States. Who would have guessed that Peggy, affectionately dubbed Britain’s ugliest dog, would leap from quirky contests to cinematic stardom, winning our hearts &, of course, sharing the limelight with superhero icons in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU)? Certainly not us!
Yet, in a plot twist worthy of Hollywood itself, the remarkable pooch who snatched the title and our fondness is slated to appear as Dogpool in the much-anticipated Deadpool & Wolverine flick. Ryan Reynolds — no stranger to finding the extraordinary in the unpredictable — beamed with excitement in his Empire magazine feature, praising Peggy’s perfect portrayal of Deadpool’s alter-ego, Wade Wilson’s spirit.

Fifteen years ago, writer/director Henry Selick brought the world a stop-motion animated adaptation of the Neil Gaiman novella Coraline – and now, Variety confirmed, he’s planning to make another Gaiman-inspired movie. This time, Selick will be bringing the story of Gaiman’s novel The Ocean at the End of the Lane, which Selick considers to be the author’s crowning achievement, to the screen. Hanna director Joe Wright was attached to direct a live-action adaptation of the novel back in 2013, but that never made it into production.
The Ocean at the End of the Lane has the following description: A middle-aged man returns to his childhood home to attend a funeral. Although the house he lived in is long gone, he is drawn to the farm at the end of the road, where, when he was seven, he encountered a most remarkable girl, Lettie Hempstock, and her mother and grandmother.
