Interesting murder mystery.
Sleepin_Dragon12 November 2015
The Adams are the perfect family, they seem to have it all happiness, wealth, but scratch the veneer and the problems soon surface, a grizzly murder soon occupies Father Brown.

This show needed no time to settle down, nor did the cast need any time at all to get into their respective parts.

A good snapshot of what I imagine life to be like in England during the 1950's, I can imagine people with a mentality of 'carrying on, no matter what.' Triumph over adversity etc.

It's a bit of a paint by numbers murder mystery, a little generic, but it's enjoyable enough, the main characters are settled in an proving to be very entertaining. You always get your money's worth out of Julian Wadham, and he's his usual self here, very watchable that is. Nice performance from Amy Morgan (Ruby) too, her career is certainly going in the right direction. 7/10

Father Brown getting established
safenoe5 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
A decent episode of Father Brown, and the second one in fact. The characters are starting to find their feet. Sid Carter's delicious look at seeing the fleeing culprit run over by a train should have earned him a BAFTA.

Kasia Koleczek as Susie Jasinski is the European Union Polish presence in Father Brown, although sadly (and perhaps as a presage or foretelling of the Brexit vote just three years later), her character was written out of Father Brown after season one.

I really hope Hugo Speer can return to Father Brown please. It's disgraceful that the mob have chased him away from acting, but hopefully the Father Brown producers wills stand up for decency and fair play and have Hugo back.

Missed this one at the time...

Filmed local to me I must admit the original airing filmed in 2012 & repeats had eluded me until tonight. Better than average storyline, great amount of red herrings until late on. Certainly one of the best episodes from that series. Also it must have been a hoot on set for Lady Felicia to be wearing an old style policeman's tunic with 69 as the number on the collar at the play rehearsal. .Yes we all know most of Glos was, and still is Church of England but they try to go by the original stories so just go along with it and enjoy the ride Just a BBC 1950's set version of ITV's Midsomer Murders..

The flying stars

After Colonel Reginald Adams and his actress wife Anne-Marie have forbidden their young daughter Ruby to marry her tutor, the American communist John Van Ert, Anne-Marie is found drowned. Inspector Valentine believed she fell in the lake whilst drunk but Father Brown proves it was murder. Learning that the couple argued, Valentine arrests Reginald just as Anne-Marie's long-lost brother James Trewlove arrives from Nairobi. Anne-Marie's will leaves James nothing, with the chief beneficiary being the church whilst Ruby is bequeathed the Flying Stars,a valuable necklace. During a performance of a play at the Adams' house the necklace is stolen. Father Brown manages to unmask both thief and Anne-Marie's killer.

A nice entry with some fine mystery and fine acting - lady Felicity is up to her tricks again, falling for a long lost brother of the victim - or is he? Is the killer the boyfriend of the victim's daughter? You have to watch to find out.

The Flying Stars

Warning: Spoilers
A far stronger episode that the previous one. It was incredibly difficult for the audience to guess whom the culprit was, I know I certainly didn't get it right, the person I wanted it to be was innocent, and proven so quite early on. Nevermind however, for this was a great episode, the train scene at the end was brilliant.

The Flying Stars

An entertaining second episode and it is nice that Father Brown and Inspector Valentine have a nice rapport. None of the antagonism that Father Brown has had from the Inspector's successors.

The death of alcoholic Anne-Marie Adams is initially regarded as an accident. However once Inspector Valentine obtains further information, he initially suspects her husband, Colonel Adams for her murder.

The dead woman bequeathed her valuable necklace the Flying Stars to her daughter. She plans to elope with her communist American boyfriend.

Last but not least, Mrs Adams long lost brother arrives from Nairobi.

Father Brown has his work cut out here. Even Lady Montague is a suspect.

I did think who the suspect might be but had no idea as to why. If there was a flaw, I would had expected someone to recognise one of the people.

Formulaic, but Fun

This episode involves what appears to be a very wealthy family. The victim is an alcoholic woman who is found floating under a dock. We have an unrequited pair of lovers. We have the appearance of a relative at the funeral of the victim. We also have a military man, the paternal figure. Father Brown uses classic deduction (very well done) to get tot he bottom of things. I enjoyed this a great deal as it nicely gives us a solution.
