Drama makes Titanic look like an episode of Max & Ruby Warning: Spoilers
Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo is a romantic comedy-drama anime that has managed to make me think I'm not the only guy in this world who has various personality flaws. Pretty much everyone in Sakura Residence (except for Sorata) has their own issues. One thing for certain is that the characters in this anime are very interesting in their own way, except for Jin, who seems to be a copy-paste of Yusaku from Toradora.

It starts with Sorata living in a local dormitory and having regretted living there due to the residents, who are colorful, unique, and at the same time very chaotic. The colors of the rainbow suddenly spilled into a painting that resembles No. 5, 1948 but brighter. I love the story for its slow but nonetheless effective boil - after episode 12, Shiina discovers love at long last and how it feels, and now comes the inevitable romance ladder. A lot of things about this anime that differs it from the rest is how at least 3 of the Sakurasou residents spoke lines so deep that it requires Odfjell's drilling rigs just to reach in with the awesomeness. I find Jin, Shiina and Ryuunosuke to be the masters of this - in episode 10 Ryuunosuke managed to defeat Rita in an argument, make her cry the Volga river and run away to some place all without feeling remorse even when everyone else turned away from him and called him heartless. This was one of my most favorite episodes, as Ryunosuke's lines were spoken so straight, so emotionless and so deep that you can probably consider becoming gay and marry him.

I have seen Episode 23 and this is one of the first (and probably the only) times I have ever shed tears. All the events were Chekov's guns and the Sakura dormitory is what I see as the Schwerer Gustav of the entire series. This anime alone is so unpredictably sad that it made James Cameron's Titanic look like an episode of Max & Ruby.

I could say that this anime's not about a woman coping with a mental disorder (like as I predicted), but the whole household and how one person in life can impact many through the power of friendship. It's basically got a story that's so deep, so unexpectedly sad. The anime itself tells about the lives of everyone in the dorm, but in Episode 23 it's where, for the first time in my life, I have flooded my neighborhood in tears like a seasonal flooding in Venice. It's that giant Schwerer Gustav that somehow manages to camouflage itself from the open field that had a clear shot of my manly guts, and has given me this diarrhea of emotions.

I recommend all of you to give this anime a shot if you got the time, unless you hate drama, which I always do. You can join the club for the laughs if that's what you want, but believe me - Episode 23 has created the fountain of tears. But don't watch Episode 23 right away, start with the first one. You will live not to regret it.

Emotionally mature with a distinguishing point of view
JHD_inc23 May 2016
Within this genre there are plenty of inspiring shows about finding a passion and committing yourself. About pouring all your energy and entire being into something, about the joy of creating something together. And this is another one of those shows. But what sets it apart is that it also deals with, after all that effort, being confronted with failure. Because of this distinguishing perspective (plus the fact that it's simply an all-round well-executed show), it deserves to be on your to-watch list.

Plenty of room is made for romance, or at least the way to a romantic relationship. Looking at the premise and after the first few episodes you might be reminded of other unsymmetrical relationships such as seen in "Clannad" (done badly imo), or "Toradora!" (done very well). Though the show can be classified as a romantic comedy, the romance, though prominent, is secondary to the other themes. That being said, it's handled gracefully and in tune with the bigger theme.

It features a cast of diverse characters, each of them providing a unique perspective and adding something to the whole and each with plenty of depth to explore. Each character and his/her story is unfolded at a good pace, never feeling rushed or forced, and in such a way the individual stories feel intertwined.

The interactions and emotional displays are not always subtle. Of course, it doesn't always need to be. To keep things light you sometimes want some comic book-style expressions. But in this case, at times, at moments where I felt subtlety was called for, lack thereof lessened the impact of said moments. When it matters most the show is still very engrossing and moving, but at times it could have used a bit more subtlety, be a bit more trusting of the audience to be perceptive and empathetic.

There's quite a bit of fan-service in the first few episodes. To draw in the viewers, I'm guessing. As I'm watching more anime, I'm starting to build an immunity to it. If it's your cup of tea, enjoy. If not, don't worry; as the show progresses the focus shifts to more important matters and you'll be less harassed by needless cleavage and panty-shots.

The show may need a few episodes to grow on you (it did for me anyway), so be sure to give it that chance.

A Misleadingly Artistic Show About Misunderstood Artists
IanHowler5 June 2021
The Pet Girl of Sakurasou is a comedy anime that was surprisingly released in 2012 - remember when people were saying that 2012 was going to be the end of the world? Good times. - that cleverly and gradually shifts into a romantic drama anime as the show travels through the 24 episodes it is composed of.

This show has the most absolutely gorgeous and colorful animation style I have ever seen in a Dengeki Bunko anime adaptation, in my opinion. The lighting and coloration in literally every single shot throughout every episode in the entire show was brilliantly vibrant and just completely full of life. I felt like this was really fitting, too, considering this is a show about misunderstood prodigal artists, pretty much.

The storytelling method of the show was extremely clever to me as well, as it initially misleads the audience (including myself) into thinking this will be a simple, two-bit, standard comedy anime, but it eventually reveals itself to be so much more than that. No spoilers, of course, but I will say that, again, this was fitting for a show about artists, as many great artists historically aren't appreciated for their work until many years after the work is made.

I loved this show especially in the original Japanese version, as the actors really sold their characters, in my opinion. However, the English version had its share of good acting as well, most especially in the case of voice actress Skyler Sinclair, who voices Rita Ainsworth, a character who hails from England. Miss Sinclair's performance is one that left me completely starstruck, in my completely honest opinion, as she really sells the character even though she talks in the heaviest British accent I have ever heard.

Full of love, full of life, absolutely flawless. I watched first 3 episodes and this movie something special. History about artist autist girl Shiina and her "nurse" boy Sorato. Everyday relationship which to transform to brilliance spark of big love. All i want to say: you never regrets if decide to watch it.

I expected nothing but fanservice and comedy but...
masonfewel10 April 2021
The first few episodes were exactly how I expected the show to be: extremely fanservicey and mostly a comedy. However, it slowly turned into more of a romance towards the middle and then slowly turned more into a drama towards the end.

I had heard that this was a bit of a harem, and that turned me off at first, but I ended up still trying this show anyway. In my opinion, if there is a love triangle your story has a foundational flaw, and this show had that too. If one person is picked over others it makes the others feel bad, and if no one is picked it leaves with you with a sour taste from the ambiguity that is present. This show makes it so you care for each of the love interests equally as much, and then ends up having one of the two options that I mentioned.

Also, towards the end it gets pretty sad but if you get through that it gets happy and lighthearted again. This show has far deeper concepts than what you would think from clips or a synopsis too.

All in all, this story is flawed and the ending, while being happy, didn't really do it for me. However, I feel that the great things about this show far outweigh the negative things, even if I didn't talk about them as much (for instance the characters and their interactions were great, and it didn't feel as cliche as some other slice of life anime's I've watched recently) so I would definitely give this show a try if I were you.

Not too shabby, just a little silly
bendashwood9 March 2022
Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo is a kind of odd mix. It's a slice-of-life romcom mixture that wants to be funny pretty much all the time, with a somewhat serious undertone. It has its share of outstanding qualities, but unfortunately fails to keep a healthy balance between silliness and seriousness.

The cast diversity is definitely there. All characters have very individual and unique traits which make you feel that every single one of them, despite their oddness, have their purpose and their right to be. It's making a great case for individualism in the otherwise highly conformist Japanese society. It's just... too much over the top. Many characters are exaggerated to a level where it just seems silly. And so become their interactions.

Another slightly disturbing imbalance is the amount of artificially created 'ecchi' moments and intentional innuendos, while the characters struggle even with the most basic displays of emotions. It is not unusual for this type of show, but the discrepancy in those behaviours was, in my opinion, a little too much.

While the storytelling and the animation itself are nothing out of the ordinary and the exaggerated silliness of the show make it hard to immerse or relate, two qualities struck me as outstanding:

1. The soundtrack. Not too aggressive, subtle and beautiful at the right moments.

2. The localization. I watched the show on Netflix, Japanese audio with German subs. But only the subtitles showed a great attention to detail and use a lot of 'urban' and common language. Also the overlay of textual passages, documents, books right in the video was done with a great attention to detail and seamlessly integrated into the overall frame. Not many Japanese shows put that much effort into making them accessible for foreign audiences.

Tl;dr: An overall good, silly and fun rom-com show with certain strengths and weaknesses. Decent watch but not outstanding imo.

Highly recommended!!!
Gabrielfox14 September 2022
The talent and genius that some people have in different areas always generates fascination and admiration. It motivates "normal" people to push themselves to work hard and try to get to that level. But this anime touches with comedy different complex issues of the prodigies and the people around them: In their social interactions, affective relationships and professional activities.

Geniuses and prodigies are eccentric by nature. They have unusual personalities, charismas, reactions and attitudes, which will generate funny moments, dramatic and surprising situations.

A great anime, You will laugh, you will cry and definetelly you will love it.

Two thums up.

An alright anime
axeller12 January 2021
The story is great and tackles many struggles of the young adult life. The dormitory that the story takes place is chaotic yet lovable. However, I do have an issue with it which is why its not an 8-9. Almost every episode another character has a mental breakdown. These breakdowns can be essential to character development but it was definitely an overused tool in this.

A anime that is worth a watch.
dashing-native9713 October 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Although I gave it a 6/10. This show is pretty much OK to watch, since this is a spoiler! Not as much, you have your typical girl and guy relationship, along with another who won't even get close to hooking up with the main character. But it has an awesome moral to this show! Failure. We all go through life with the hopes of something very good, though it will end in failure. Shina the main love interest. Is a painter and a very great one at that. She is considered a great artist well known by either art lovers or rich folks such as herself. As she moves to Sakurasou with the hopes of becoming a Manga artist. The people staying at that place is trying so hard with their own goals, though nothing ever comes good, they always find a way to be OK with it. Despite giving your all wasn't enough. That is a very strong subject implanted in this show. It could've done very well in just 13 or 12 episodes long, though the show is dragged on with your typical love stories, its the main reason to my 6. Nothing very creative other than the subject in this show. Still I'd give it a watch, though it was only once and it will stay a one time deal.

This series was all right for the most part, but ended so badly. 26 episodes of build up to one lackluster ending
dussaultjulien22 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
24 out of the 26 episodes of the show we're pretty good, the last two episodes unfortunately we're not. They may as well have been Recaps, as well as an introduction of a whole slew of needless, unnecessary new characters that you're not even going to get to see you so what's the point of introducing them. The relationship between the two main characters never really goes anywhere, and every single time they both confessing to each other there happens to be something going by that Kevin's one of them so that they can't hear how the other is actually feeling, nor do they feel the need to discuss how they are feeling with each other either. It's annoying, boring and by the end of 26 episodes you're expecting more than just this.

The only Pro that I can give the show is that it really boosted my creativity and made me feel motivated and made me feel like I wanted to try harder, that stayed with me, the show is by the end forgettable, boring and you're just tired because you just wasted not only your precious time, but your emotional energy into investing in these characters that just let you down at the end. I would recommend watching this show, but do yourself a favor and fast forward to the last two episodes because they're not worth sitting through. I was expecting so much more. I am disappointed

It's so boring, Isekai Action Adventure, even Comedy Fans stay away from it
shuvongkor16 April 2023
The word "Pet Girl" seemed interesting and I though the anime could also be interesting too. But when I was watching the first episode, I started to realize how boring and meaningless it was felt, like it was never ending. I painfully managed to finish 5 episodes in 5 days, and they were the first 4 and the last one. Even though I skipped 19 episodes, it was fine, I didn't miss anything important. In short this is an anime where there is no actual story behind it. The anime is about some highly talented but somewhat crazy or freak like students living together in a school hostel with the non-talented yet less crazy but somewhat kind protagonist, who did not know what he would do for a living, and after living and interacting with the talented crazy students and he finally wanted to do something. And that is to develop video games. And that's it. There is nothing else in this anime. But every people have different taste for anime. So, I guess you can try it if you want. But beware, I warned you.
