E.L. James' original "Fifty Shades of Grey" trilogy is undoubtedly the most successful piece of fanfiction ever published. James turned the teen-friendly romance between Bella Swan and Edward Cullen in Stephenie Meyer's wildly popular "Twilight" franchise into an erotic reverie explored by the mysterious (and quite wealthy) entrepreneur Christian Grey and college journalist Kate Kavanaugh. It was a Bdsm gateway drug that opened up a healthy portal for kink-curious young adults. You didn't have to feel like a freak for wanting to do what conservative society deemed freaky.
Was it good literature? Does it matter? James' novels have sold hundreds of millions of copies and been translated into 52 different languages. They are adored by people who never knew they wanted to see Bella and Edward engage in consensual sadomasochism. I am happy they have these stories in their lives. What matters, at least when it comes to my bailiwick,...

A heroic wizard, an elusive magician, a flatulent corpse – we can now add drug-smuggling pilot to Daniel Radcliffe’s eclectic résumé, according to The Tracking Board, now that the British star has been tapped to headline indie thriller Beast of Burden.
Not to be confused with The Rolling Stones hit of the same name, Beast of Burden marks the English-language debut of Jesper Ganslandt, the Swedish director best known for The Ape and Blondie, along with a handful of shorts and documentaries. Adam Hoelzel is the brains behind the screenplay, one which finds Radcliffe in the role of Sean Haggerty, a seasoned pilot who risks his life and career by flying 55 pounds of cocaine across the border in a small plane. He’ll have to remain hidden from the prying eyes of both the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Cartel, which ought to lay the groundwork for a tense, nail-biting thrill ride.

Robert Pattinson out of ‘Mission: Blacklist’ movie (photo: Dane DeHaan and Robert Pattinson in ‘Life’) Robert Pattinson and Mission: Blacklist have parted ways. Pattinson, whose name had been attached to the project for two years — since Cannes 2012 — has reportedly dropped out due to scheduling issues. Now, what could those issues be? Well, Robert Pattinson, best known (at least for the time being) as the vampire Edward Cullen in the immensely popular Twilight movie franchise, has no less than two movies opening at Cannes 2014: David Michôd’s thriller The Rover, co-starring Guy Pearce, which will be shown as one of Cannes’ Midnight Screenings, and David Cronenberg’s Maps to the Stars, also featuring Julianne Moore, John Cusack, Mia Wasikowska, and Carrie Fisher, and which is in the running for the Palme d’Or. There’s more: Robert Pattinson has recently completed work on Anton Corbijn’s Life, with Pattinson as photographer Dennis Stock,...

His last two oeuvres in the complex, dark The Ape accompanied by the estrogen-filled audit called Blondie demonstrate Jesper Ganslandt’s filmic temperament as one that is both alluring and volatile, so naturally we’re thinking that the Swedish auteur could embed this fact-based thriller with darker shades of the psychosis. We’ve lost track of this project which was have supposed to have begun lensing in January, and with Robert Pattinson in constant flux we imagine that we’ll be getting a news flash update of sorts fairly soon.

Robert Pattinson's next project, Iraq thriller Mission: Blacklist, has found a director. Deadline is reporting that Swede Jesper Ganslandt will be calling the shots. Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire had been pencilled in but subsequently withdrew from the production.Ganslandt has three Swedish films behind him, including 2012's Blondie, but Mission: Blacklist will be his English-language debut. The script, co-written by Band Of Brothers screenwriter Erik Jendresen, tells the story of Pattinson's Zero Dark Thirty-like quest for Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein in 2003.Set in the fallen dictatorship, the movie will tell the story of Staff Sgt. Maddox, a gun specialist interrogator charged with finding the bad guys. That's all of them: from Saddam and Tariq Aziz, right the way down to the funny propaganda man who used to tell the world that everything was under control even as American soldiers were rifling through his sock drawer. But it's Saddam, of course,...

Robert Pattinson Mission: Blacklist gets new director - Jesper Ganslandt - and may start shooting in fall 2013 Production on Mission: Blacklist, to star Robert Pattinson, seemed to have stalled for a while. Director Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire quietly dropped out a couple of months ago, but now Deadline.com (“exclusively”) heralds that Jesper Ganslandt "has been tapped" to take the helm of the project about U.S. military interrogator Eric Maddox, whose work is credited for the eventual capture of Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein. (Note: This bit of "exclusive" news about Robert Pattinson’s eagerly anticipated project has been floating around the Internet since late June.) Jesper Ganslandt’s previous narrative-feature credits, all in his native Sweden, are the family drama Blondie (2012), the psychological thriller The Ape (2009), and the coming-of-age drama Falkenberg Farewell (2006). This last title, a somewhat overlong but ultimately quite moving story, was Sweden’s submission for that year’s...

For millennia now, the idea of three sisters has been a potent one in myth and literature. From the Fates of Greek legend to the witches in “Macbeth” to Olya, Masha and Marina in Chekov’s play, the theme recurs across civilizations, with mountain ranges and rivers named after some variation on "three sisters" the world over. And it’s this archetype that director Jesper Ganslandt (“The Ape”) looks to tap into for his new film, “Blondie.” A stylish and well-performed family drama described as a “deconstruction” of a genre that, in Sweden at least, Ingmar Bergman made his own, the film starts promisingly, before lapsing into convention and ultimately failing to really dig into the characters that it set up. Three Swedish sisters are all returning to their mother’s home in the countryside. The eldest, Elin (Carolina Gynning) is a coke-addled model in Paris, who has a difficult relationship with the.

The 2012 Toronto International Film Festival line-up got another boost with today's announcement of the Midnight Madness, Vanguard and Documentary selections which include films from the likes of Barry Levinson, Don Coscarelli, Rob Zombie, Martin McDonagh, Ben Wheatley, Michel Gondry and Alex Gibney and include titles such as Aftershock, Dredd, Seven Psychopaths, Pusher, Sightseers, The We and the I, The Gatekeepers, Finding Nemo 3D, Hotel Transylvania and a Cinemateque selection that includes Alfred Hitchcock's Dial M For Murder, Roman Polanski's Tess and Roberto Rossellini's Stromboli. Considering Paul Thomas Anderson's The Master was recently added to the official selection as a Special Presentation I am going to have my hands full when it comes to screenings, but I will definitely make sure to catch McDonagh's Seven Psychopaths, which is one of my most anticipated films of the year. Otherwise, the schedule will determine which ones I check out. The...

So here's the deal with Jesper Ganslandt's Blondie, which will have its world premiere in competition at Venice Film Festival: it's the story of three sisters who return to their childhood home when their mother arranges a big party. It doesn't sound like anything of particular note and the opening moments of the trailer certainly don't suggest anything spectacular but once the film's title appears over a carefully composed family photograph, the tone changes. All of a sudden, this feels remarkably like a horror movie. [Continued ...]...
