My thoughts on "Lower Deck" so far are that, after a few shaky opening episodes, the show has steadily improved season upon season to the point here that it's become really good. So much so that, on a technical note, this is the first season where the show is on Paramount Plus in the UK, rather than Amazon Prime, and it says something that I decided to subscribe in order to watch this.
Having been promoted from Ensigns to Junior Lieutenants, our heroes get to move from standard sleeping rooms, to their own quarters. Mariner (Tawny Newsome) is still struggling and taking increasing risks to find some happiness within Starfleet. Tendi (Noel Wells) returns to Orion and only then do her friends see the status she has on her homeworld. A mysterious unidentified ship is overpowering and destroying various vessels seemingly indiscriminately.
The last season introduced a bit of longer-term story arcs to the show, but this season has a full season storyline, with the ship inexplicably disabling and destroying various Starships. The resolution, when it comes, come from a real "deep cut" character, one that, if I'm honest, I didn't remember anything about - despite who plays the character (then and now). There's also a return this season for Jack McBrayer's Badgey and for Jeffrey Coombs AGIMUS.
It's probably the funniest season that the show has done so far, both in terms of gently poking fun at "Star Trek" and also just general ideas. The concept of "Mark Twaining", which appears a couple of times across the run is an idea I found really funny.
I've really come to look forward to "Lower Decks", so much so that I subscribed to Paramount Plus to keep watching it and I'm looking forward to season five.
