Was This Really Needed?

Warning: Spoilers
The Soccer Football Movie (which sounds like another entry in the long line of movie titles that sound like they were made by lazy execs) is an animated film. In it, the All-Star Cup is about to happen, as soccer superstar Zlatan Ibrahimovic qualifies. However, mad scientist Wierd Al Yankovich decides to steal his talents using a fake soccer ball containing slugs to mutate Zlatan and other soccer stars, four fans must do something to stop them.

Okay, as someone who as dealt with movies that are so bad, they are dumped onto Netflix (as the platform seems to be the streaming service equivalent of a city trash dump), this has to be one of the worst animated films I have ever seen. As much as I like Weird Al and his musical career, I felt he was the only good thing about this movie due to his humor, as everything else fell flat. Also, they get real-life soccer players Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Megan Rapione in two of the major roles, but even having actual soccer stars can't save this movie from its flaws, which includes too many fourth wall breaks, horrible running gags like a character asking for a selfie at the worst time, and the fact they make a whoopie cushion, of all things, the McGuffin that causes the two athletes to mutate back and forth. Also, the animation looks like it was made on a Dreamworks computer from the 2000's, and clocking in at an hour and thirteen minutes, it feels more like something I'd find direct-to-video (and in one of those bins where Wal-Mart puts the movies they have on discount that either everyone already has or does not want) than something to serve as a streaming service exclusive.

Boring, unfunny and pointless
awkiqk24 November 2022
Boring, unfunny and pointless. If you want a fun football-based cartoon then go dig out Early Man as at least that's an enjoyable watch, but I have no idea what they are trying to achieve here or who the target audience is.

Why would you can't Weird Al Yankovic in one of the main roles in a kids movie, no child on this Earth has heard of him!

As for the film itself, it's a random mishmash of strange scenes that don't knit together, and is somehow worse than the sum of its parts. Clearly released now to cash in on "World Cup Fever" and yet still they've managed to make something that's more uncomfortable than Qatar human rights abuses.

It feels like it goes in forever, yet is only around the 80 minute mark. Woefully bad.

Space Jam without the 90s charm

Warning: Spoilers
I honestly don't know why I even watched this movie.

Probably I assumed that it would be something like Metegol (Not a great movie, but fun and with some nice animations) combined with Hotel Transylvania.

It wasn't anything like that. It wasn't even a fun movie. It was just bad.

The plot was kinda like Space Jam, with a villain stealing the talent of famous sportsmen to create mutants, or somehing like that.

Instead of aliens, there was Weird Al. Instead of Michael Jordan, there was a soccer player named Satan or something like that.

Instead of the Looney Tunes, there were a group of generic kids that seemed as characters from a Discovery kids show. One of them was very annoying. (I have no idea of why some modern writers seem to believe being obsessed with selfies is a personality trait.)

It honestly it felt like something made by an AI machine, with a story barely making sense and regurgitated elements from better movies. The animations is also kinda ugly looking.

At one point, the manbun of Satan gains sentience and turns into an evil monster.

The director, Mitch Schauer, actually worked on Space Jam, and also directed The Angry Beavers series, which was pretty good. Maybe the movie would have been much better if it had Norbert and Daggett instead of the generic kids.

Three points for the creative design of the manbun monster at the end, and for the performance of Weird Al.

My head hurts

Like, ok, I'll give the movie some credit because the first half it was so incredibly bad it was actually funny to watch. I had fun pointing at the little details like how they used the same 3 background characters 20 times each.

But then it became a chore. After the first half they just add dialogue when it isn't required, making a scene that should last 1 minute, 15. It was painful, I probably aged 15 years when watching the insufferably long ending, where they pretend it's over at least three times, just to add another wacky surprise to the plot. Which is a stupid decision, since this movie is so all over the place it stops surprising you very early.

At the end of the day, I had a "meh" time watching it. The movie is still absolutely horrendous though.

Oooooooh dear.....!

Where do I start?! Truly awful. I'm not sure what age rating this is, but I don't think it's suitable for a six year old. He didn't seem too bothered, but there are some bits that could be considered a bit too scary for younger audiences. There is definitely some references to Aliens and Prometheus in this movie, not that the younger folk would get it, thankfully! I'm not really quite sure what Netflix were thinking when they made this. It's not exactly for soccer fans, or even people who aren't soccer fans. Maybe it was a vanity project for someone? My advice would be to avoid as best you can. I certainly don't think it's one that will be watched again in this house!!

Awful

Wow. Pity you can't score (no pun inteded) a 0. One of the worst things I've ever watched. It tries to be like Space Jam but ends up being something I want to forget in a hurry. It amazes me how they got people like Zlatan, Wierd Al and Megan to 'star' in this absolute drivel. Please don't waste your life watching cuz you will never get the hours back. I don't know what anyone was thinking when they decided to green light this. My 8 year old liked it but he likes anything to do with football. I don't think it is appropriate for very young viewers but 6-9 year olds would find it OK. But this film is so bad, a razzle award would be too good for it.

Warning: Spoilers
What a strange concept for a film, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Megan Rapinoe (not sure of the spellings guys) have their soccer talents taken away from them by a weird scientist by the name of Weird Al Jancovic (yes that one) Jankovic's plans to steal the talents of all the worlds great footballers ( so he starts with Zlatan and Megan) to presumably build his own star studded team of mutant footballers.

Their talents are eventually restored by a group of meddling kids. Along the way they have to play a group of slug like mutant footballers.

The film features the actual real voices of Zlatan and Megan and Weird Al for authenticity.

Ps it's animated and aimed at kids and not a surreal dystopian nightmare. Ps it stinks.

Nothing good about it at all.
sethvh-2364817 May 2023
It seems like this movie was written by a team of 13 year olds and their 80 year old grandparents, then translated to Bosnian and back again. With 1996 animation employed by high school AV clubs. Just unbelievably bad and unfunny. I think Zlatan, Megan, and Weird Al share an agent who had an extra thousand bucks and wanted to make their own commercial advertising their voice abilities in hopes of scoring big jobs later. Basically an audition tape that we were forced to watch. Everyone involved with this production should lose their jobs and get manula labour jobs and never talk to people ever again. And Zlatan sounds like Noho Hank.

Not a good movie but not terrible if you know zlatan
steenstine15 November 2022
Ok, just my thoughts but I really don't think this is inappropriate for younger audiences like some of the other reviews say. I enjoyed a lot of cartoons in the 90s that would be deemed inappropriate today. I think these complaints come from overly pc parents or at least parents that don't enjoy soccer and follow players. The movie itself is a total rip off of space jam but not done very well kinda like space jam 2. However, like I said the complaints about it being inappropriate are just dumb. I'm sure your six year olds know some swear words and I bet you let them have access to an ipad. The world is way scarier to a six year old than this movie.

The Movie The Soccer Football Movie is the worst Movie ever. It was so INAPPROPRIATE, cruel, and scary, what's I saw in the movie was mutant slugs that control people, becoming monsters and steal their talents, making Weird Al the bad guy, and a pony tail hair came to life, absorb all slugs, and turn into an giant ugly monster, with it's eye and tentacles in it's big mouth. There's also four young kids that fight monsters, living in a broken down van (almost like they're homeless and orphans with no families), Please do not watch that movie, I'm warning anyone, everyone, anything and everything.

Too silly
guisreis18 March 2023
Animation is nice, and the general plot, despite not innovative, is not bad. Additionally, I did like the green monsters, the mad scientist, and the way both football players have been cartoonized. However, dalogues are the worst and stupidest possible, teenage four characters are boring, tepid and undevelopped, and the inclusion of whoopie cushion is a ridiculous element. To summarize, outcome is just too silly, and being a kids movie is no excuse for that, Netflix. Curiously, just to resume: the 7-1 score (the unforgettable one in 2014 World Cup semifinal) is reversable according to the film.

Extremely tedious to sit through
r96sk3 January 2023
The film that turns Zlatan Ibrahimovic into Darwin Núñez, basically.

A cheap gag from a Manchester United supporter out the way, this is a rather bad flick. I'm not sure what I was expecting but it wasn't this. Its plot is practically 'The Incredible Hulk' meets 'Ghostbusters', which sounds way cooler than it actually is.

'The Soccer Football Movie' is not only boring, not only bland but also extremely tedious to sit through - though, thankfully, it only lasts for around 1hr 15minutes. The animation is very cheap-looking, something that shouldn't be so with a company like Netflix involved. Then you also have a very lacklustre voice cast.

Tania Gunadi is the only member that sticks out in my mind away from the people playing themselves, though that's probably only because I remember her from 2013's 'Snow Bride'. All those alongside Gunadi are... not the best. Kieran Walton's pronunciation of Zlatan grates, also.

Yep, that's correct. Zlatan Ibrahimovic voices himself in this and features fairly heavily. In all honesty he, given he isn't an actor, is actually fine, but him - alongside 'Weird Al' Yankovic and Megan Rapinoe - being your production's main star meant it was always likely to fall flat unfortunately.

This only avoids a lower rating as there are many worse films out there. Still, this 2022 release is probably one to avoid.

A Delightful Blend Of Humor, Heart, And Thrilling Action Sequences
rannynm5 April 2024
The Soccer Football Movie is a delightful blend of humor, heart, and thrilling action sequences. From start to finish, the film captivated me with its engaging storyline and charming characters. It's a joyride that kept me hooked throughout.

In this animated adventure, a group of plucky kids, known as the Creature Catchers, embarks on an exciting journey to witness their soccer heroes, Zlatan and Megan Rapinoe (voiced by themselves) in action. However, their plans take an unexpected turn when they discover that the players have been mutated by a strange slimy slug concocted by the eccentric Weird Al (voiced by Weird Al Yankovic). Now the creature catchers must team up with superstars to thwart a monstrous creature created by the nefarious slime.

This movie is a true gem! The clever humor, stellar voice acting, and stunning animation make it a joyride from start to finish. The jokes had me laughing out loud, and the voice acting by the remarkable cast brings the characters to life in a way that is both entertaining and endearing. The animation is top notch, with vibrant visuals that capture the excitement of the soccer matches, and the chaos of the creature's rampage. Moreover, the underlying message of unity and camaraderie adds depth to the storyline, making it a film that resonates long after the credits roll. Watching the creature catchers and the soccer stars come together to overcome obstacles and defeat the common enemy is not only thrilling, but also uplifting. The Soccer Football Movie is a winner for both soccer fans and animation lovers.

The film's message is that teamwork makes the dreamwork, and that with support anything can get done. By Gavin S., KIDS FIRST!
