Switch the sound off and look at the views
johnaalsmeer6 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
A ludicrous script (honestly, my granddaughter has been a better writer since she was 10) has a 24 year old pose as a world famous writer of pulp fiction (did she also start writing at 10 year old) off to Scotland to pick up an award. So many silly errors suggest a badly researched script, the soup stained shirt she couldn't change before leaving home - although she managed to pack luggage - to saying she'd never heard of a scone (yes, they're different in America to Scotland, but they're common in both), to ...oh, it's not worth continuing and neither is the movie. I said switch the sound off - no, just switch the movie off.

The Scottish Locations are the Only Saving Grace, but don't Waste Your Time
likes-felids31 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I tried, but I couldn't make myself watch to the end even with all the pretty scenery. I think I watched about 10-15 minutes till I just gave up.

The female protagonist, Jen Oakley is just straight up shady. There is a bit of false advertising regarding the plot that was released by the studio. It reads that the dashing Scottish poet mistakes Jen Oakley for a famous novelist. No, the mistake happens at the airport when a worker assumes that Jen Oakley is the famous novelist Liz Harvii, so Jen just goes with it and continues the lie. I know mistaken identity is a common trope in films, but come on.

It doesn't make sense that the writer(s) created a 20-something character that pretends to be someone who is 30-40 years older when they don't physically appear that way. Secondary characters kept repeating that they thought the character Liz Harvii, the novelist was older. It just makes the so called fans of the novelist seem like complete buffoons. Even if you don't know what the novelist looks like, you can deduce that Jen Oakley's character is a fraud.

As for the dashing Scottish poet, James MacDuff, this character is far from dashing. He seems like a curmudgeon old man. Yes, I know by the end of this movie the two leads are supposed to fall madly in love with each other, but I ask why? Jen Oakley is beyond irritating. Her whole character just turned me off.

So bad
jennie-4937730 April 2023
The first 10 minutes showed promise....until the scene where she spills tomato soup on her top at home, receives a call from her co-worker friend that she she has to be at the airport in two hours and you see her at said airport wearing the same top, stain hidden by a short sweater. We're expected to believe she didn't have time, even just one minute to change her top for a clean one? Too ridiculous. Plus how many times can one person have stuff spilled on them in one day? First the coffee when someone slams a door on her, then the tomato soup? I found her acting okay and I liked the co-worker guy friend. But that was it. I however stopped watching after about 15 mins.

Misleading storyline
boriskaiser26 February 2023
Another day and another mediocre Reel One Entertainment TV movie which actually had a potential to be a good drama but instead we got lame comedy and no romance. There are no technical issues, but there is an issue of somewhat fake location. It was indeed shot in Scotland but things get a bit of messy. You see, plot takes place on the Isle of Skye, they even showed stock footage from time to time except it doesn't. The movie was actually shot on probably some 10 different places through Scotland and they just mixed them together. Not bad per se as if you don't live there you won't even know about it, but it's hilarious at the same time as how hard is to shot everything in one town. Doesn't it drive cost up filming in the various different places?

But that's not the problem with the movie. It's the mistaken for special guest trope, very popular trope but hard to properly execute it. I feel sorry for the Scottish part of the cast. Storyline on both here and ROE site is actually misleading - Jen wasn't mistaken for someone else by a dashing Scottish poet. No, no, she was was mistaken by gate agent at the airport, so she consciously decided to lie that she is the famous Liz Harvi which was possible because she never appeared in the public. James MacDuff, the famous Scotish poet didn't even hear of Liz before their encounter at all!

Imagine if that fake storyline was true. Imagine if James was actually admirer of Liz novels, and when he finally met her, except it was imposter Jen, they quickly develop romance for each other as Jen is his big fan (this last part is the only true in the movie). And then imposter was caught up and movie transit to serious drama. But no, instead, for example, there is a dinner scene to show how Jen is a poor cook, and it was supposedly "funny". And that's the whole movie - supposedly funny scene after funny scene.

3* as was actually filmed in Scotland and the Scottish cast was actually Scottish and not Canadians pretending with fake accent. Just watch trailer and save your time, and if you want to watch about Scotland, there are so many videos available for free on so many streaming sites.

no story
Kirpianuscus7 April 2024
All seems reasonable and nice intentioned. Except the story. First, because Scotland was used as location for so many Hallmark films than you expect something original or pretty new. It is not this case.

Second because the situations are, repeately, pure unrealistic, part forced.

Not less, because the use of cliches is real bad.

The actors are sabotated by poor story and the end is so fake than a beautiful love poetry can save nothing.

But, sure , Emma. Fischer and. Finlay Brain are nice and good intentioned, Barbara Horne and. Lewis Howden are fair options for supporting roles,Janis Ahern offers pretty portrait of literary diva and the. MacDuff residence sounds good.

But , the regret about absence of story remains.

Achingly handsome Finlay Bain
johnjohnii13 May 2024
I thought that this film was cute and witty and thoroughly enjoyable to watch. It is a feel-good movie, intended to take the viewer to a better place for a couple of hours, and for the most part I think they succeeded. The film has some problems and errors, but I do not think they were shooting for the Oscars. Seriously folks, it is a rom-com, it needs to be graded on its own curve. The filming locations were lovely, the cast was lovely, and the Scottish accent toned down a bit for American ear but still exotic enough. Normally I would give a film like this a 7, but I have to raise it to a 10 for the strikingly attractive and personable Finlay Bain who made this film so pleasurable to watch.

Horrible story line, some nice views of Scotland
johnph-6458020 February 2024
Tough to have sympathy for a young woman who continues a lie for nearly the entire movie. She had numerous opportunities' to correct the misrepresentation, but continues with her unbelievable character. Some of the vistas of Scotland were nice to view, but otherwise the film was a total waste of time. Over and over, she continues this unbelievable charade with the inevitable outcome of discovery. From pretending to know that she could cook, to not having an idea what her latest novel is about, there were too many discrepancies to make this movie believable. I found it to be immensely uncomfortable to sit through.

What A Horrible Lead Character!
BrassRingEdward26 February 2024
If clueless, stupid people who lie and are complete cowardly frauds are your cup of tea (pardon the pun), then you're going to love this one!

The female protagonist is so horribly unpleasant, I had a hard time watching it. If for the fact that I hate to jump off during even a bad movie, I would've certainly taken the off-ramp on this turd. Despite numerous opportunities to "come clean," she only chooses to double down. Only a really morally bankrupt person does this. We see it on the news all the time.

The problem with "Hollywood," is that they've lost all moral direction, so this kind of thing is considered "charming" or quirky and we're supposed to ignore that a person is without merit and makes for a horrible experience...and also ignore the improbable situations she creates and are inflicted upon us.

Take my advice, give this a miss...you'll thank me!
