Brilliant

I thought the that beginnings parts 1 and 2 were perhaps the two greatest episodes in the canon of Avatar. The explanation into the history of the Avatar was fantastic, as well as the change in animation style which accompanied it. The two episodes succinctly explained everything that we needed to know: about the beginning of the Avatar, about the beginning of bending, about the lion turtles, about the spirits... perfect episode.

For any fans of the original Avatar series - even if you aren't a fan of Korra (though you should be) - these two episodes are a must watch for the reasons outlined above.

The essence of the avatar spirit...
goktug1119 October 2013
This 2 part episode was unquestionably the best avatar episode ever aired. (For both series) Episode explains how the first avatar was "born". It is the kind of episode that shatters every bit of inconsistency and answers all the questions people have. It brings the feel of greatness to the avatar which frankly has been missing for a while now. It is an astonishing approach, an extremely well crafted prequel, the kind of basis every series needs. It doesn't matter if you like Korra or not, it doesn't even matter if you haven't watched any episodes from The Legend of Korra. This is the episode that you should watch to understand the world that drives this show, this is the episode you should watch to perceive what it means to be the avatar. This is not the final piece of the puzzle. This is the frame that you put the puzzle pieces on.

Amazing!

Warning: Spoilers
I have to say, at first I wasn't quite a fan of Legend of Korra, or at least the first season anyways. I had felt it started off great but it lost my interest halfway through. But I continued to watch it because I was such a fan of the original Avatar show. This season, particularly this episode, has hooked me to the point of no return.

In this episode, we continue to delve into the past of the Avatar, all the way down to the first avatar, a boy named Wan, as he journeys through the world, making spirit and human friends. Along the way, he meets two spirits known as "The All Powerful Spirits" as they are fighting each other, (resembling the Yin Yang symbol as they do) and the darker side, Vatu, sees Wan and begs him to help release him from the lighter side, Rava, whom he claims has imprisoned him for ten thousand years. Wan unwittingly releases Vatu, and Rava tells him that because of this, Vatu is going to destroy the world and engulf it in darkness and chaos. Wan and Rava join together and journey to the other Lion Turtle cities, asking each Lion turtle for a different element to use until they can use them all together. They then journey to the spirit world and fight Vatu, and bond themselves together forever so that they may seal him away in a tree in the spirit world.

This episode hooked me from the very beginning. It told the story so interestingly, and not once did I think they were being cheap or cliché with anything. I have been curious as to who the first avatar was from the very beginning of the series, and not only did it give insight as to the first avatar, but the first benders and the start of each nation.

The world in this episode was so well put together, it resembled the Avatar world, but it didn't at the same time, finding a perfect blend between eerie and exciting. There were parts that freaked me out and parts that I thought were amazing.

The balance between characters was also perfectly done, as Rava was fierce but gentle, Wan was a thief,= yet he was kind. The forest spirits were kind, yet vengeful, and Vatu was all around cruel, but yet he wasn't cliché, bringing me back to the same feelings I had when they spoke about the Firelord in the first season.

Overall, this episode has made me not ever want to miss another episode of Korra ever again.

Hands down the best episode in the whole Avatar series
sharcs25 October 2013
I just finished watching this episode and I just had to come here and sing praise about it. The music, animation style, humour, drama and effects come together into one beautiful, seamless and free flowing story that scoops you into this beautiful fantasy world, leaving you with a level of love and understanding for the main character that I've never experienced before in any show.

I just have to mention that this is part 2 of a two part episode so I'm also referring to the episode before this. If you haven't watched it you need to GO WATCH IT NOW. You don't even need to have watched the series as this is a prequel, advanced knowledge of the story not necessary. I honestly believe that they could get away with making a part 3 and a part 4 and releasing it as a box office movie.

After watching this episode I feel as though I've reached the climax of the show, I feel as though no other episode, no matter how good will ever be as good or as entertaining. But you know what? I don't even care, this episode was that good.

Fantastic

I don't usually write reviews on IMDb, but this episode was so breathtaking that I have to leave my thoughts here.

Until these two episodes (counting it as one with the episode before, as they also aired on the same day), The Legend of Korra had its great moments, but always felt like an afterthought to the original series that shows some more of the Avatar world without much impact, especially where the lore as a whole is concerned.

We have heard time and again ever since the previous show, that the Avatar is the bridge between the physical and the spirit world, with the latter only appearing briefly a few times in the original series.

These episodes finally address this and gives us the full backstory why the Avatar has this role and how the Avatar cycle started. It fits very harmonic into the lore of the shows, despite the fact that we probably would never have gotten this story had TLA not been so successful to give us this spin-off.

Even if you don't like The Legend of Korra, you could jump in here, enjoy these two episodes and learn more about the Avatar lore without ever watching the rest of the show, which makes this two-parter even better than it already is. I vote a hard ten.

Warning: Spoilers
Is Mula an animal or a spirit? Why does it just become this guys packhorse..If its a spirit and intelligent this just seems wrong. Finally female villagers and a female spirit. The good and the evil spirits are cool and make sense, one male one female. FINALLY Korra acutally goes on a journey to understand things and not just bam i can do everything because i did some empty nonsense. Cool backstory, could of been better. Second half is better then the first

Extremely boring.

Warning: Spoilers
I was waiting the whole episode to get back to Korra. I don't care about Wan and I don't care about Naava. I thought the Avatar was neutral, balanced. Turns out the Avatar is literally Jesus.
