True Human
This is another favorite episode and to me one of the last good ones this series was able to offer. This episode feels like it could have been another short story for Asimov's "Foundation" series as it's another story on human and robots living together. The episode tackles a deep social issue about bigotry, and it does it well as we see it's directed toward technology.
We see there are these three superpowered beings (obviously inspired by the three Kryptonian villains from "Superman 2") that are on a destructive crusade to ride Earth and every other planet of technology.
We of course see the scuffles between the defenders and them which are good/decent though I'll admit could have been better which is one weak point in the episode, like why we couldn't have seen Phantom use his ten tigers and Lothar his strength and martial arts against two of them, the fact that doesn't happen in the episode was a lost opportunity.
I really like how in this episode Flash Gordon is the main hero for once as there aren't many episodes in the show where he gets to take center stage. It's interesting seeing him not just exercise some heroics like trying to reason with the three but also seeing him finding love again. We see him have chemistry with Kayla who of course is one of the three but he doesn't know it yet.
I'll admit the love aspect in the show I really wish could have been utilized a bit more, it would have been interesting and added more to the characters, seeing Flash moving on starting a new relationship with someone and how both Rick and him are coping with the reality of it. Maybe if there was another season that could have been possible but oh well there's always the fanfic to continue things.
But this gets into another weak point in the episode I which both Flash and Kayla had more interaction time that way we could get a better feel for both of them, and it would of given the ending a little more weight to it.
This episode has a lot of good memorable moments, one I like is when there is this reporter that tries to sell bull crap about what Flash is doing but then Lothar, he then shoves the bull craper away, jacks the mike and sets the record straight; yeah, good for you Lothar.
Another is this monologue Flash gives about hate while exposing the truth, and its true part of hate's source is mainly based on internal hatred. And the expression of hate is just an act to erase the truth and mask who the person is and their true motives. It really was a good moment as Flash's exposing was sort of the truth and reality calling the three out on who they really are.
But of course, the other good moment is the last with both Flash and Kayla, we see that Kayla's time with Flash has awakened feelings she never knew she had. This makes her conflicted realizing that what this group she serves isn't right in fact it we see it's really one giant hypocrisy as we see actual human beings are being endangered, which is another part of what bigotry is where it justifies itself as a noble cause despite carrying out amoral actions and just being exactly what it is mindless destruction. Those feelings also helps her in learning the important lesson in what it means to be truly human.
Will Flash and humanity itself prevail over prejudice, you'll have to wait and see.
Rating: 3 and a half stars.
