The Fate of Haraldson
claudio_carvalho25 September 2017
While hunting in the woods, Ragnar overhears screams and finds his farm is under attack of Earl Haraldson and his men that kills people, livestock and his entire farm. Ragnar is wounded and asks his family to flee to their boat. He surrenders to Haraldson to buy time for his family reach the boat but he lures and flee from Haraldson an his men, jumping off a cliff to the river. Athelstan jumps in the water and rescues Ragnar. Then they take him to Floki's home that shelters the family and heals Ragnar. Meanwhile Haraldson tortures Rollo to know Ragnar's whereabouts and arranges the marriage of his daughter with an old Earl to be more powerful against the will of Siggy and their daughter.

"Raid" is a great episode of "Vikings" where Haraldson is the central character with his cruel attitudes towards Ragnar, Rollo and his own daughter. What Ragnar and Rollo will do is unknown but maybe Haraldson has signed his death sentence with his attitude. Let's see the next episode to learn his fate after the challenge of Ragnar. My vote is eight.

An Exciting Development
amongpixels1 January 2021
"Raid" has an intense, exciting and well-executed first half (which successfully raises the stakes and forms a stronger connection between us and our leads), while the latter half slowly and effectively builds towards, what seems to be, a major resolution. While some of the dialogue is still hit and miss, there's plenty of standout character moments, particularly for the Earl, as well as Athelstan, whose dynamic with Ragnar and the others is always so sweet. The music is also something worth noting, which alongside the title theme, is consistently strong.

Botched raid.

Warning: Spoilers
The Earl decides it's time to take Ragnar out of the picture so he sends a bunch of his soldier's to Ragnar's home to kill him and all his family. Luckily our hero is out hunting deer with his bow so he is not there when they strike. He hears the commotion and comes running to save the day.

It appears that the 15-20 people working around his farm/estate are mostly farmers/women/children so they are quickly dispatched by the soldiers. Of course the wife and kids make it to their hut and await their fate.

Ragnar comes down from the hills and shoots one of the assailants with his bow and then engages 4 or 5 of the soldiers by himself. As usual his enemies (this time fellow Vikings, not Saxons) can't fight worth beans. One actually manages to slash his left thigh but that won't stop Ragnar. Another manages to shoot an arrow through his left shoulder/chest area which he plucks out. Then the chase is on!

Two bleeding wounds do not slow him down as the chasing soldiers can't keep up! Luckily none of them have a bow and arrows or Ragnar might be done for.

The rest of the show is him getting healed and the Earl looking for him to no avail. The show ends up with the Earl accepting a challenge of a fight to the death which will be resolved next episode.

Again, the acting is not horrible and the scenery is quite beautiful. The fight scenes are quite painful to watch, though, and makes one wonder how the Vikings survived (all except the ones near and dear to Ragnar).
