Going West
claudio_carvalho24 September 2017
Ragnar and Rollo find a crew and has a secret meeting with them, promising that they will be equals and their pillage will be also equally shared. However Haraldson's spies inform Ragnar steps and departure to him. After a dangerous journey through the open sea, Ragnar, Rollo and their men arrive at a monastery, they slaughter the monks to loot their sacred treasure and taking a few survivors as slaves.

"Wrath of the Northmen" is the second episode of "Vikings" with a violent story. The scene of the looting of the monastery is very impressive and the brutality against the unarmed monks is despicable. But what should be expected from a group of men that pillage to survive? My vote is eight.

A Cautiously Hopeful Progression

Warning: Spoilers
"Wrath of the Northmen" progresses the story into mildly more interesting and exciting places. The stand out moment particularly being when Ragnar's crew finally reaches the shores of England. However, the antagonistic characters almost border on being comical, the dialogue is often overly blunt and uninspired, and some of the editing is distractingly impatient.

Island Raid
shalomlopez3 January 2024
"Wrath of the Northmen" is a brutal episode depicting the savage butchery and pillage of the island in the west, inhabited by Christian monks. This is a true historical event, that is known to be the beginning of the Viking Age.

The acting seems to lack a certain level of depth - Ragnar had no problems eliminating any opposition to his plan brutally, without any effort to reason diplomatically. It definitely portrays the Vikings as uncivilized and barbaric.

Ragnar and his crew easily take over the island from the monks, and set sail back with their blood-stained loot.

It remains to be seen if the Earl would forgive Ragnar and his crew now that he found the land in the west, considering we have witnessed nothing but brutality amongst the Vikings.

Good plot, but...

I am really liking the story of this show and the direction it is headed, and it is nice to finally see a good Viking show. However, i do have a lot of problems with this show. The biggest being the acting, there is so much poor acting in this show. And I'm not claiming that most of these actors are bad, but i think some of the reason why is the accent they have. I understand very well that they want to keep it is trustworthy as possible, and stay true to a somewhat Scandinavian accent. But it just comes off as weird, especially on Ragnars son. It sounds really weird, really wish they just had a British accent. If you are contemplating whether to watch this show or not, I would strongly advice you to give it a go. it is a great show, so far (S01E02).

Continuous strong

The second chapter of Vikings is even stronger than the first and much better! The only thing with this show are the accents, I don't know if it's just me or not but sometimes I don't buy the performance with the accent. It's not that I say the performance is bad, most of them act great but sometimes the accent is weird. Anyway, the show is still brilliantly directed and with a continuous synopsis and even better.

Poor writing ... especially dialog.
TiedUp223 March 2013
The second episode of the series, as often happens, does not match the quality of the first which itself was hardly spectacular. I'd really like to see a well-made Viking series. Unfortunately, this isn't it. The production values are adequate and the acting is usually adequate but the writing, especially the dialog, seems amateurish. I find myself constantly wincing at the dialog thinking: that's not how people talk. Also, conversations often seem to lack sufficient context and feel unsatisfactory. The writing lacks sufficient nuance to enrich the story. This story would have more value if there were better connections to the back-story. Generally, this is pretty basic, low-level hack writing. I'm going to try one more episode - #3 - and if it doesn't get any better, I'm gone.

Unwatchable

Warning: Spoilers
What could be better than Vikings?

Unfortunately, we have 21st century characters dressed up in possible Viking outfits. All the characters are tropes. The sensitive intellectual who turns into an all- competent fighter. The beautiful shield maiden who is always wildly available to her man, because he is an intellectual master warrior. The earnest young son, learning perfect lessons from the perfect teacher.

At first, I thought that Earl Haraldson was the "incompetent precinct captain", but it turns out he is Ramsey Bolton, otherwise known as "TWPE" (The Worst Person Ever), with his partner "The Evil Queen."

We turned off this hackneyed bad dialog fest after midway through the second episode.
