Light movie with fresh script from a young team - worth a watch
kpartha284 March 2012
Kadhalil Sodhappuvadhu eppadi, if you don't know by now, is a 9 min short film with the same name which received positive reviews and has been expanded into a 2 hour movie. The short film is on youtube and can be viewed here.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tRSi-j7z8Wk

The storyline is nothing new. Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus. They are so different in the way they think that they can never be made for each other. Good relationships happen only when both partners understand this and make compromises. One must give credit to Balaji however for the fresh script and a different way of narration. While it might be easier to come up with a short film and make an impact, I think it is very difficult to blow it into a 2 hour movie without blowing up. I also liked the way the heroine's parents failing marriage and its resurrection was weaved into the story.

Sidharth might have crossed 30 but doesn't really look a misfit as a college student. His antics really suit the college boy Arun who constantly messes up in love and keeps lamenting to the audience. Amala Paul as Paaru is cute and impresses as a college girl who is unsettled by her Parents failing marriage and struggles to understand her love interest Arun and ends up pouring all her emotional tantrums on him. All other characters including the friends and the hero and heroine's parents have done a good job. The music by Taman is really good and there are 2 songs which appeal - Paarvathi Paarvathi and Azhaippaya.

Anyone who has fallen in love or is married can appreciate the view points presented in the movie. Humour in the movie is not artificial and is woven into the storyline. The hero's friends are all new faces, thank god there are no old comedians coming as college students! There are some really interesting anecdotes shared in the movie like comparing girls to a monalisa picture in the museum and saying from whatever direction you look it looks like the picture / girl is looking at you. Showing a waterfall every time a girl is about to cry was cute.

The movie does have some minor downsides. The film I thought goes into a tad too many examples of friends messing up which I think could have been avoided. Asking several people for opinion and hero frequently talking to audience might be good in a short film but too many such instances in a movie make it sound like a documentary on love at times. In the second half , the hero goes on a trip to Pondicherry with his friends which I feel been could have been made a bit more crisp.

The movie does not have a different story as such but it is a fresh presentation from a team of youngsters and is worth a watch.

Infatuation Failure!!
sasikanth2017 February 2012
M. Balaji has made some awesome short films. I absolutely love his work. He kinda makes you feel that it is you he's talking about. Love Failure is one such short film, unfortunately, one which is dragged for more than two hours. If you've seen his work before, there nothing new the film has to offer. He's got a couple of episodes from Mittai Veedu, and the rest is an extended version of the original nine minute Kadhalil Sothapuvathu Eppedi. He's even got most of the cast reprising their roles.

Siddharth is good in the leading role and really tries hard to woo you. Amala Paul is decent to look at, although I kinda felt her to be outta place. The dialogues are brilliant, music is decent, and direction spot- on. However, the draggy never-ending story pulls the film down. First half is pacy and the second half makes you yawn. The biggest blunder, at least for me, is that the film actually ain't about love failure; it's about infatuation failure. (I say that with a lot of experience. If this is love, then, argh, nevermind!!)

It's got its moments in abundant and reminds you about yourself a zillion times. But Love Failure fails to create the magic. It's more of a teenage love story (infatuation) with a predictable ending, and looks more like a youtube film than a commercial feature film. Bottom-line, it's not something you need to run to the theaters for, nevertheless, a decent watch.

Thoroughly enjoyable Warning: Spoilers
"Kathalil Sodhapuvathu Yeppadi" (KSY) is as pleasant & heart-warming as the short film of the same name on which this movie is based on made by the same director Balaji Mohan. How to mess up in love is a pertinent question for many youngsters today & the writer-director has tried to find answer in a pragmatic way in his debut feature film. Movie has many incidents which might ring a bell in most of us , those who are in love , those who were in love & would interest also who might fall in love. This alone in enough for it to turn eye balls towards it & create waves in the Box-office.

The narrative style is so fresh which strikes a chord with audience right away. Almost all the scenes from the short film are re-enacted here as well with the same amounts of finesse & charm. The casual way of telling the story coupled with plenty of witty scenes makes the screenplay work. Though there are instances where one might feel the screenplay is trying to meander away from the course & in couple other it does lags a bit, these are only minor deviations on the largely smooth & lucid screenplay.

Dialogues are witty & intelligent at the same time sound so casual. Balaji should be lauded for this because it is very difficult to write lines on this subject without trying to be preachy. Except for couple of instances towards the end where some dialogs get monotonous, on the whole dialogs are too good & enjoyable.

Casting & performances of the cast is also faultless . Siddarth fits in perfectly in the role of the engineering student who falters repeatedly in love . Amala Paul has also acted well in the role of the temperamental lover girl though one still might wish Regina who did the short film could have been retained. Arjun is damn hilarious with his timing as well as in his demeanor. Vignesh , Pooja , Suresh , Ravi Raghavender , Shyam & Balaji does neat supporting jobs.

Nirav Shah has tried something new this time. He has managed to bring in the short-filmish flavor but at the same time not stooping down to the level of amateurishness of the short-films.

In Thaman's music "Parvathy, Parvathy" is delightful dance number while "Azhaipaya azhaipaya" is a nice melody as does "Thavarugal Unargirom" . Background score is also done with the flavor of the movie in mind & has come out well.

Balaji Mohan is a promising find for Tamil cinema while KSY would finally launch Siddarth in Tamil Cinema & for Amala Paul , she continues with her merry ways in the Box-office.

On the whole , "KSY" is a perfect outing for the Valentine season.

Bottomline : Thoroughly enjoyable

Closest to reality!!
raviteja243656 March 2012
It was the one movie that I had seen closest to the reality. Ever since I saw the short film "How to mess up in LOVE", I was surprised by the way the director etched up such a cute complete story in just 8-9 minutes. Even i was passionate about movies and always wanted to make one but it never happened. The film maker in me felt inspired seeing that short film and wished all my best luck for Balaji Mohan and I felt it actually worked when I heard his upcoming movie with Siddarth as Kadhalil Sodhappuvadhu Yeppadi in Tamil and LOVE Failure in Telugu. The direction of the movie, if its not what you call Awesome, I really have no idea what else to call it!! The performances are very natural from Siddarth, heroine and everyone else. The casting just looks perfect!! A perfect trend setting cinematic style with a novel screenplay is what I'd call it :)

love failure, as the name suggests its all about it.
bellamkondapoorna25 February 2012
In this competitive world, its tough for a though talented, to fine an opportunity in this fashion, skin or whatever you name...simply film industry, but here is a go to the director known for his short movies, has bought a life into the story that you travel all along daily. When you sit mocking to the movie initially as the title appears, there is a fresh aroma that depicts right away.

A real applaud to Sid, for taking up an initiative in producing a low budget movie with great production values, script, screenplay, casting, whatever way that needs to be in a real authenticate film.

A simple movie without exaggeration, have a coke or coffee and enjoy the show.

Men are from Mars, women from Venus is the epicenter of the film
pantheraleomaximus1 July 2014
Kaadhalil Sodappuvadhu Eppadi, the short film that won the name and fame for director Balaji Mohan gets made into a full length feature film. A promising debut, Balaji Mohan! The film conveys that there is "no made for each other couple" that we come to love not by finding a perfect person, but by learning to see an imperfect person perfectly. the story , screenplay and presentation about boys, girls, love and heartache is worth a look. the chemistry between lead actors; cinematography and music are positive aspects of the film. A romantic comedy makes an appearance in Tamil cinema after a long gap.

cheers for Balaji Mohan for a good debut venture...

Boring narration of story through out film.
rckstarchiru27 February 2012
This is really different film, whole story is narrated by Siddhartha which is new but still leads to boring. Film will give clear idea why love fails and how to compromise to make love success.

Pro's: Siddhartha is looking good and action is nice as usual. Amala paul is good in few scenes and not in few scenes without make-up. Acting wise hero-in is not up to the mark, dubbing given to heroine voice is easily make it out.

Con's: Boring Narration even though Siddhartha's voice is good. Whole movie is running behind love failure concept. Comedy is missing. Freshness in scenes is missing which we expect from Siddhartha's movie.

Funny and different
sibijai22 April 2023
The movie directed by debutant Balaji Mohan was a new addition to the new wave cinema that was happening during 2010's including Pizza by Karthik Suburaj, Soodhu Kavvum by Nalan Kumaraswamy and Aaaranya Kandam by Thiyagaraja Kumararaja. The film had a different storyline with a different making. I could equate the making style of this movie to The Modern family in which the characters will speak to the audience breaking the fourth wall. Here in this movie, Siddarth speaks to the audience about his experience with love, how he is coping with his love failure, why did the breakup happen. The movie was funny throughout. Music by Thaman really added to the humour. Parvathi Parvathi by Siddarth was really a catchy song. Azhaipaya Azhaipaya was melodious number with visuals depicting early stages of love with the couple wanting to exchange their love even after their college. Throughout the film, the director along with the audience exploring various reasons of boys sodhappifying in love and how could he understand the mood of women in different situations. Overall if you are considering to add it to your list of this weekend binge, I would recommend you to go for it.

When Love is in the air, Failure is around the corner
krshychait25 February 2012
Are you in Love? Do you want to fall in love? Or else you just don't want to fall in love but want to know about love? Before seeking knowledge about LOVE, understand one ground rule, BOYS CAN NEVER UNDERSTAND GIRLS. When this rule is underlined and understood completely, then there is no need to explain what love (especially for boys). Love is all about understanding girls and what they want. And that is the USP of Siddharth's latest film which hit the screens. "LOVE FAILURE" which has been produced by Siddharth himself on his Etaki Entertainments banner and is directed by, Balaji Mohan who earlier made some short films on similar theme.

One peep into the film, you will know why is everyone (almost, if I am right) are talking about this one. Love Failure is all about Arun (Siddharth) talking about his breakup with Parvati (Amala Paul) and the reasons for their break up and subsequent patch up. In between we are served with break up of several other couples, some young, some about to get married and some in the middle-age of their lives.

Rather than the story, it is the screenplay which makes all the difference for this film. The Director just makes the hero talk to the audience and present his case of understandings and misunderstandings. Through the journey of Arun, in which he touches the lives of Cathy and John, Parvati's parents (Suresh and Surekha Vani) and his own friend Vignesh, he makes us relate to our own stories and our own failures.

Each and every moment of love-life relies on a thin balance and if that balance tilts, failure is just around the corner. Perhaps, there is no other relation in the world which is as brittle as a glass other than the relation of loving each other. Gaining the trust of the partner and maintaining that trust and understanding the emotional needs of the other is the basis on which the foundation of love rests. The more you experience Failure in Love, the more you learn about life and evolve as an individual. That is the essence and message of "Love Failure".

Balaji Mohan gave such a wonderful treat with such guts, that one doesn't feel the need for any songs and there are none in the second half till the climax happens. That is the beauty of Love Failure, it is conventionally unconventional. A refreshing change in cinema, considering the recent films which ask you to leave your brains and heart at home. Balaji Mohan's debut is noteworthy as more can be expected of him in way of story telling techniques which would be new to Indian cinema.

Siddharth has certain boyish quality about him which makes us believe him to be that college going boy. He has by now should have mastered the way of walking through these roles but Sid just manages to impresses us time and again with his dialogue delivery and confused expressions, thanks to the freshness in the screenplay and the scenes.

Amala Paul is going to be the talked about girl after this film. Finally there is an actress who can act than just remain beautiful. Amala essayed the role of Parvati with such conviction that she may be rechristened as Parvati in real life. It was the most commendable performance by an actress in recent times on Telugu screen. She makes a good pair for Siddharth and she has some depth in her characterization with her family life in shambles with her parents going for a divorce. She brings out those subtle variations admirably which augur well for her future.

The supporting cast of Suresh, Surekha Vani did well. One should say that Suresh really emoted well in some scenes which do not have a precedent (in my knowledge) in Southern cinema. The guys who have acted as friends for Siddharth did good job of evoking laughter through their acts.

The technical departments are great with Nirav P Shah claiming credit for the cinematography whereas TS Suresh with his scissors. But was this really SS Thaman who gave music for the film? He sounded so different and it is refreshing to note that this music director has so much of variation. Thaman proved to all his critics that he can give refreshing musical score. His background score really manages the movie nicely. The onus now is on the directors of Tollywood to get the best of this guy.

And finally, a word of appreciation to Siddharth as a producer and his production team. You did a great job of sticking to your judgment despite facing lots and lots of criticism and negative vibes which were spread in the market. You gave a great film, might be urbane but very identifiable to anyone and everyone. Whatever might be the box-office fate of the film, I shall just say 'thank you' for well spent 2 hours in the film and this thanks comes from me as a viewer than a reviewer.

A real entertainer that will keep you laughing the entire movie
sdreelin1 August 2015
I laughed through this one the entire movie. It contains a well written script that will appeal to young folks and even older couples in love. Siddarth and Amala pull off their rolls as a confused couple as they work to sort things through. There is plenty of good advice given here as well and makes you step back and realize just how things can easily go wrong at times. This is a nice family friendly flick. The music is a bit boring, but the lyrics are more important than the tunes themselves. A super nice change where a lot of Tamil films have great music but terrible story lines and acting. Though it is a romance-comedy, there is a bit more comedy in this one so even guys will like it. I recommend watching with your special loved one.

Don't expect anything....
thegreatnolanfan22 February 2012
I had no expectations and was not disappointed so i ll advice you the same. the first 10-15 mins of the movie are, i think the best part of the movie with nice direction and comedy. the creativity shown in that part of the movie is lost slowly as the movie continues. let me first point out the good things about the movie: 1. there are not many useless boring songs. 2. a little bit of comedy at times. 3. nice portrayal of family values. now the bad things(according to me): 1. amala paul reminded me of priyanka chopra in kaminey with same hair style and dressing style. and no other shades of her were shown. she is generally good looking but was not in the movie. 2. sidharth had no scope to show his talent. 3. story....... 4. boring at times especially in second half. 5. nothing new. 6. most of the times i was thinking hw this part could have been done better..... so on the whole its a not even time paas movie.....

Mokka movie
sidhu123518 March 2012
There are a lots of things happening in college despite all those how on earth do people see that part of the life alone? There is something called semesters, semester practicals for a stupid mark we have do a lot of stuffs, the movie was good as a short movie but in a 2hr length it seemed to me like a small picture being stretched to fit as wallpaper in our desktop, it would have been nice in the way it was. we ought to go through a lot of awful stuffs during our college times but why is it so all the movie picturing college always focuses on "LOVE"? If people want a fast moving interesting movie and focus college why don't they take a movie on the way take up our assignment and internal tests, I am not against any "LOVE" but is that the only thing happening in college? I have never seen anything of whatsoever during my college days.
