“Pleasant Outcast,” a 10-part Korean series that is set to appear at Canneseries next month, is a companion piece to “Concrete Utopia,” the hit film from last year that was selected as South Korea’s Oscar contender.
Both the Lotte Cultureworks series and “Concrete Utopia,” a dystopian drama-thriller set in a post-apocalyptic Seoul, are adapted from best-selling webtoon “Cheerful Outcast,” by Kim Soong Nyung. The film was frequently compared to William Golding’s seminal novel from the 1954 “Lord of the Flies” and its 1964 film adaptation.
Using the first part of the webtoon, the series follows Dong-hyun, a high school junior, who barely survives his day-to-day bullying at school. “When he wishes all were dead, an unexplained powerful earthquake destroys his school. Trapped in isolated circumstances, the hierarchy and power reshuffle as students struggle to survive, while continuous collapses and accidents kill more students. In this collapsed and extreme world, the...

"Deliverymen must be tough." Netflix has revealed a teaser trailer for another large-scale sci-fi series from Korea, this one titled Black Knight, based on the comic series known as Delivery Knight. Yeon Sang-ho may have not been able to replicate the grand success of his live-action debut “Train to Busan” yet, but you have to hand it to the writer-director for never shying away from trying new challenges and newer genres. After showing much promise in his much acclaimed animated features “King of Pigs” and “The Fake”, he ventured into live-action territory with “Train to Busan”, following that up with with the superhero entry “Psychokinesis” before going back to the world of zombies with “Peninsula”, which may not have lived up to the hype of the original (or even its animated prequel “Seoul Station”), yet ended up being the highest-grossing Korean release in the pandemic inflicted 2020. Yeon would then join hands with Netflix to bring his webtoon “Hellbound” to an Ott series before re-teaming with the streaming giant for his first venture into full-blown sci-fi with “Jung_E”.

Just-released “M3GAN” and previous #1 “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” (both 19.99) took the top two spots on the revenue-based Vudu chart as well as on the transaction-based iTunes and Google Play.
As for the top Oscar nominees, some got the chance to make up for weaker grosses in theaters But for “Everything Everywhere All at Once” (A24/19.99) the rich get richer.
Daniels’ metaverse success, which led with 11 nominations, reached home viewing almost seven months ago. It returned to 1,400 theaters this weekend and added 1 million to its 70 million domestic box office. Other than Animated Feature nominee “Puss,” it was the only nominee to make all three charts.
Even more impressive, “Everything” increased its VOD price to 19.99. That includes downloading, but this is an unusual if not unprecedented move.
Among other nominees, “Triangle of Sadness” (Neon/5.99), “TÁR,” (Focus/5.99), and “The Banshees of Inisherin” (Searchlight/3.99) — the last two are also streaming — made two charts each,...

Stars: Kang Soo-yeon, Kim Hyun-joo, Ryu Kyung-soo, Uhm Ji-won | Written and Directed by Sang-ho Yeon
Currently streaming on Netflix, JUNG_E is the latest film from Sang-ho Yeon, the director of zombies-on-a-train nailbiter Train to Busan. Whilst this dystopian robo-thriller doesn’t quite hit the same heights, it’s still an engaging slice of sci-fi, even if it’s ultimately much less action-packed than the promotional material suggests.
JUNG_E opens with a protracted series of captions, explaining that it’s 2194 and the Earth has been largely evacuated due to pollution and climate disaster. The only problem is that the various orbiting moon stations have devolved into Civil War, leaving those still on Earth perfecting robo-weapons to help end the conflict.
One such weapon is super-soldier General Yun Jung-yi (Kim Hyun-joo), a highly skilled battle robot built from the DNA and memories of a real military hero, who fell in battle and...

If you want to see the #1 film in the world (and see it properly), you need to buy a ticket at a movie theater. And that likely will remain the case for “Avatar: The Way of Water” (Disney) for the indefinite future.
But it’s different for the #2 and (it appears) the #3 top-grossing titles in domestic theaters, at least as of Tuesday. “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” (Universal/19.99) marks its third week atop all three VOD charts we track. And multiple sources indicate that “M3GAN,” following the studio’s normal strategy for films that debut in theaters to less than 50 million, will add home rental platforms as well. (Universal did not respond to a request for confirmation).
“Puss” came out on only the third weekend of play in theaters, yet in successive weekends stayed strong. Its hold in consecutive weekends was down 19 percent, up 7 percent, down 21 percent this weekend.

This JUNG_E article contains spoilers.
From Yeon Sang-ho, the director of Train to Busan, JUNG_E is a sci-fi drama set in a dystopian future where the Earth has been ravaged by climate change and is no longer habitable. Humans are forced to abandon the planet for man-made shelters in space, though not every shelter is on board with their proposed leadership. What remains of humanity becomes engulfed in a civil war between the Allied Forces and the Adrian Republic.
But there’s more to JUNG_E than war games and big CG-laden battles. Deep down, Sang-ho’s newest film is about the ethics of AI bred for war and the commercialization of death. JUNG_E tells the story of Captain Yun Jung-yi, a legendary soldier whose failed final mission leads to her brain being cloned by a military AI development company, Kronoid, in an effort to design the ultimate robotic soldier in her image.
