The rest of the shows that debuted in the sizzle reel include: “The Gilded Age,” starring Christine Baranski, Cynthia Nixon and Carrie Coon in 1880s New York City; an adaptation of “The Time Traveler’s Wife;” the Watergate series called “The White House Plumbers;” crime drama “We Own This City...

It’s difficult, outside the US, to understand just what its television landscape looked like in the Sixties and before. There were a handful of programmes aimed at children, such as Mr Rogers’ Neighborhood, but they weren’t relatable to kids from all backgrounds, and almost everything else available was first and foremost about pushing products. Early on in this documentary, one of its contributors describes Sesame Street as "What television would do if it loved people rather than trying to sell to people," and all of the magic comes from there.
Could television be socially useful? To Americans, this was a new idea. It began with Joan Ganz Cooney, who imagined a series which could prepare young children for school and help to close the literacy gap between kids from different backgrounds, improving the life chances of those from the inner cities and reducing the economic gap between Americans of different races.

With great power comes great responsibility. And the power of getting to don Peter Parker’s beloved red and blue tights has been bestowed only on a few. Despite it seeming like a new Spider-Man movie is coming to theaters every year—and to be fair that’s not too far from the truth—just three actors have played the character in live-action on the big screen. When the web is slightly widened to encompass television, the number of live-action Parkers increases, but they’re comparatively obscure.
Truth be told, there have only been a handful of Spider-Men, and each has left a strikingly distinct and unique spin on the old Web-Head. For that reason, we’ve decided to look back at the most renowned wallcrawlers and reexamine what each one brought to the table.

No shocker here: For Twitter users, it was a green light for “Squid Game,” the massive global hit that became Netflix’s biggest TV show in its initial release. The Korean drama was the No. 1 most-tweeted about television show of the year.
In the U.S., following “Squid Game” were Disney Plus’ “WandaVision,” “Sesame Street,” “Saturday Night Live” and “Game of Thrones,” according to newly released Twitter data.
Meanwhile, on the movie front, “Black Panther” — the 2018 Marvel film starring the late Chadwick Boseman — was the most-tweeted about title. Note, however, that included tweets about “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” the sequel currently set for Nov. 11, 2022, release. Warner Bros. took the next three spots with “Godzilla vs Kong,” “Zack Snyder’s Justice League” and 2021’s “The Suicide Squad,” followed by Sony/Marvel’s “Spider-Man: No Way Home.”
Twitter released the rankings as part of its year-in-review “#OnlyOnTwitter” report, based on internal company data from Jan.

Another first for Squid Game. Twitter, which swung into year-end spirit today with 2021 rankings, showed the Netflix viral hit was, unsurprisingly, the most tweeted-about show on streaming in the U.S. this year. WandaVision and Loki (Disney+) were nos. two and three, followed by iCarly on Paramount+ and Ted Lasso on Apple TV+.
Across all of U.S. TV, there was a hint of nostalgia with Squid Game followed by retro WandaVision and classics Sesame Street, SNL, Game of Thrones, Jeopardy!, Grey’s Anatomy, The Simpsons, Loki and The Walking Dead. In films, Black Panther topped the top-ten most tweeted about, followed by Godzilla vs Kong, Zack Snyder’s Justice league, The Suicide Squad (2021), Spider-Man: No Way Out, Space Jam: A New Legacy, Black Widow, Dune, Mortal Kombat and Shrek. Superheroes, especially from the MCU, ruled.

One of three Arabic-language films in the Cairo Film Festival international competition, the feminist dramedy “Daughters of Abdul-Rahman” shows how many Jordanian women put the traditional expectations of their patriarchal society ahead of their own desires and the resulting collateral damage. After world premiering in Egypt, the debut feature of director-writer-producer Zaid Abu Hamdan will segue to the Red Sea Festival in Saudi Arabia.
The inspiration for the plot came from the multi-hyphenate’s own mother, as he realized that she had been unable to achieve her private aspirations. He says: “Having to be the perfect eldest sister, then a young wife living up to the social standards expected of her, then a mother to four boys, all that seemed to put her personal plans on hold.”
Eventually, Abu Hamdan sent out 300 surveys to Jordanian women of different religious, educational and socio-economic backgrounds. What came back was so unsettling that...

We’ll have another reason to be thankful for Sesame Street this Thanksgiving: The children’s programming staple will introduce Ji-Young, its first-ever Asian American Muppet, in PBS and HBO Max’s See Us Coming Together: A Sesame Street Special on Thursday, November 25. “My one hope, obviously, is to actually help teach what racism is, help teach kids to be able to recognize it and then speak out against it,” puppeteer Kathleen Kim told the Associated Press. “But then my other hope for Ji-Young is that she just normalizes seeing different kinds of looking kids on TV.” Of course, Sesame Street—and its international spinoffs—has been championing diversity for decades now. Here are some of the times we witnessed, ahem, a more open Sesame. 1991: Rosita brings a bilingual presence to the show Speaking both Spanish and English, Rosita made history as the show’s first full-time bilingual puppet,...

Sesame Street has become one of the most important and enduring television programs in American history, but there was a time, back in the mid-1960s when it was just a concept—and a bold one.
“The goal and plan was to reach children that were being underserved within education due to poverty and racism,” noted Ellen Scherer Crafts, producer of the HBO documentary Street Gang: How We Got to Sesame Street, during its panel at Deadline’s Contenders Film: Documentary awards-season event. “The goal was to educate all children.”
The film examines the key figures who took the show from concept to reality, including creators Joan Ganz Cooney and Lloyd Morrisett, and other vital contributors like Jim Henson, whose Muppets delighted the young target audience, and composer Joe Raposo, who wrote the title theme song, as well as “Bein’ Green” and countless others.

After Ted Cruz called Big Bird “government propaganda” on Twitter because that fictional character’s account tweeted about the Covid-19 vaccine, “Saturday Night Live” saw an opportunity to create a fictional new kids’ show from the senator. More recently, “Sesame Street,” Netflix’s “Orange Is the New Black,” “The Irishman” and “Ocean’s 8” were filmed on sound stages at the Queens campus. The venue has more than 500,000 square feet of production space, including 11 sound stages, and New York City’s only studio backlot.

Billie Eilish sang a special rendition of her hit song “Happier Than Ever” on “Sesame Street” with the Count, and posted the happy collab all over social media.
In the music video, Eilish is joined by the Count as she sings, “When I’m counting with you, I’m happier than ever.” The Count responds in song: “Numbers sound so much better.” The two begin counting various items together, including two of Burt’s sweaters, two taps of tap shoes and two apples. Elmo joins in song as well, singing, “This one’s for you” as he hands a girl an apple. The song closes with Eilish and the Count singing the final chorus together as they count to two. “The number two!” remarks the Count, as the video closes to his maniacal laughter and thunder storming overhead. Other “Sesame Street” characters featured in the video include Big Bird, Burt and the Two-Headed Monster.

On Monday’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” the host took aim at one of his favorite targets and least-favorite people: Texas Senator Ted Cruz. Cruz made a desperate bid for attention, and Kimmel gave it to him.
After the Fda approved vaccines for 5- to 11-year-old children, “Sesame Street” put out a tweet from Big Bird, who Kimmel noted is canonically about 6 years old, about getting the shot. “My wing is feeling a little sore, but it’ll give my body an extra protective boost that keeps me and others healthy,” Big Bird tweeted.
This disgusted Ted Cruz. “Government propaganda…for your 5-year-old!” the former presidential candidate tweeted.
“This is how they think,” Kimmel said. “If the government says it, it’s propaganda. If Congress does it, it’s socialism. If the executive branch does it, it’s fascism. If the President says it he’s a dictator. And if the media says it,...

The musical of the summer was supposed to be a life-affirming celebration of one of New York’s most vibrant neighborhoods, full of color, romance, and big group dance numbers. Instead for many viewers, the musical of the moment was filmed and performed by one man, alone in isolation from the comfort of his own home, with songs centered on techno paranoia, mental health, and the fear of aging. Maybe after a year stuck in their homes, audiences could relate to the existential dread and general anxiety on display in Bo Burnham: Inside more than a conventional movie musical.
Billed as a stand-up special, Burnham’s latest musical comedy endeavor finds the former wunderkind holed up and feeling more uncomfortable than ever. Writing, editing, directing, and performing from a claustrophobic studio, Burnham’s stand-up special skews more toward being a straight-up musical, and not because the special is light...

To understand the success of Triggerfish, the fast-rising, Cape Town-based animation house, which won the prestigious MIFA Animation Industry Award this week in Annecy, one need look no further than the circumstances of its birth 25 years ago.
South Africa was finally emerging from the shadows of apartheid, a cruel and exploitive system of institutionalized racism that had oppressed its Black-majority population for nearly 50 years. Nelson Mandela was elected the country’s first Black president, and after years of being ostracized on the world stage, South Africa was finally rejoining the global community.
“I think it was a very heady time for the country,” says Triggerfish CEO Stuart Forrest. “Everyone was very excited. We were the ‘Rainbow Nation,’ and we really felt we could do anything.”
That boundless optimism—a sense that, as in the world of animation, even the impossible could be rendered possible—was baked into the company’s DNA.

Stephen Sondheim is widely regarded as one of the greatest composers in musical theatre. He has claimed eight Tony Awards (more trophies than any other composer), eight Grammy Awards, and even picked up an Oscar for the “Dick Tracy” tune “Sooner or Later.” It may come as a surprise given his stature in the industry, that Sondheim is still an Emmy short of an Egot. More surprising still: Emmy voters have never even nominated him. This year, he could finally join the elusive Egot club thanks to the variety special “Tell the Story: Celebrating Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman’s Assassins.”

Anne Hathaway has closed a deal to star as the Grand High Witch in Robert Zemeckis and Warner Bros.’ “The Witches” adaptation.
Variety first reported that Hathaway was holding the offer for both that and “Sesame Street,” and at the time, scheduling for both films were holding up dealmaking. With those issues settled, Hathaway is now set to star in the role originally portrayed by Anjelica Huston in the 1990 classic.
