“Horror gives us the permission to explore our most primal fears and deepest anxieties in a safe and hopefully, cathartic way,” said Vera Miao, creator of “Two Sentence Horror Stories,” a new short form anthology series based on the Reddit thread of the same name. The ambitious series uses genre to shed light on social issues such as racism, homophobia, cyber-bullying, and the pursuit of beauty. “Horror has such a strong track record in exploring social issues,” said Miao. “In this upside down political and social moment we’re in, no one can argue that monsters aren’t real.”
Miao initially got the idea for “Two Sentence Horror Stories” from a Reddit thread, which featured horror stories told in two sentences, many of which went viral. “They had a classic, campfire spooky story feel made possible by this new, digital space. They’re so evocative, my imagination would just go off,...

Anthology series are so hot right now. With that in mind, meet “Two Sentence Horror Stories,” presented by Stage 13, a new series of short horror films based off of two-sentence viral fan fictions. Vera Miao (“Best Friends Forever”), a former Tribeca Film Institute Fellow, created, wrote, produced, and directed the series.

Ben Whishaw (Skyfall) will replace Colin Firth as the voice of Paddington Bear in the Weinstein Company’s Paddington, based on the popular children’s literature character. Firth departed the live-action/CGI-hybrid project in June. Producer David Heyman told the Daily Mail, which broke Thursday’s news, that Firth’s voice was “too mature” for the part; the film needed a slightly younger voice for the beloved bear who arrives in England from Peru. Nicole Kidman, Hugh Bonneville, Sally Hawkins, Julie Walters, and Peter Capaldi will also lend their voices to the film. [The Wrap]

Last year we were happy to share the web series EastSiders right here on TheBacklot. The dark comedy starring Van Hansis (As the World Turns) and Kit Williamson (Mad Men) made its cable broadcast debut as a feature film on LogoTV, scored wins at both the Indie Series Awards and La Web Fest, received a Satellite Award, spawned a web comic and was eventually released on DVD and VOD by Wolfe Video.
We were wondering if the cast and crew might reunite for more episodes of this great series and– great news– EastSiders will indeed begin shooting a second season this Summer!
A Kickstarter campaign was launched today to finance the new episodes. (The first season was also funded via Kickstarter, reaching it’s goal in just four days and nearly doubling it by the end of the campaign.) The goal for filming a second season has been set at...

Best Friends Forever was recently released on VOD and digital services, and is an apocalyptic road trip movie starring Brea Grant and Vera Miao, who also wrote the screenplay together. I recently had a chance to interview the two of them and they talked about the challenges of getting this movie made, their love of apocalypse stories, and Brea making her directorial debut:
Thank you very much for taking the time to talk with us. How did this idea of a post-apocalyptic buddy comedy come about?
Vera: Because we love genre films and are actors, we decided to write a horror film that featured two women and bring our own spin on it. About halfway through, we realized, oh, since we were going to make this movie ourselves, it’s going to be a particular kind of torture. Why don’t we write a script where we don’t also...

It takes a real set of balls to make a movie about the apocalypse without actually showing the apocalypse. It’s ironic that Brea Grant is the person who has those balls. She wrote, directed, and stars in the alternately quirky and morose Best Friends Forever. The film tells the story of two young women who embark on a road trip and end up at the beginning of the end of the world. Harriet (Grant) is a comic book artist who has recently been released from psychiatric supervision. She’s planning on a fresh start in graduate school in Austin, Texas. Harriet plans a road trip from Los Angeles to the Texas capitol with her best friend Reba (Vera Miao), including some out-of-the-way stops along the way. However, once on the road, the duo enters the isolated desert without the knowledge that a nuclear bomb detonated in L.A., essentially wiping the entire city off the map...

Brea Grant is an actress, director, screenplay and comic book writer, who is best know for her role as Daphne Millbrook - the spunky heroine with super speed on Heroes. Brea took some time to speak with AfterEllen.com about her upcoming guest-starring role on the Logo webseries Eastsiders, and her other exciting projects currently in the works.

AfterEllen: You are guest staring in an upcoming episode of the Logo webseries, Eastsiders, which focuses on a gay couple, Tom and Cal, who are in a long term relationship, and the man that comes between them, Jeremy. You play Jeremy’s sister Bri, who is a lesbian with a young family, who seems to have it pretty much together. I’ve watched the series and it’s a pretty raw and realistic look at commitment (or lack thereof) and modern relationships.

ShockTillYouDrop.com managing editor Ryan Turek returns for another group discussion in this episode of Choice Cuts.
This time, he's - once again - sitting down with Todd Gilchrist (film critic), Evan Dickson (Bloody-Disgusting) and actress/director Brea Grant (Dexter, Best Friends Forever) to chat about horror sub-genres. Specifically, which ones they would like to see return.
As we all now, horror goes in cycles and Hollywood bleeds certain sub-genres - be it vampires, slashers or haunted houses - until they go into hibernation. But which sub-genres have been out of the scene for far too long? Head inside for the group chat!

Our long-running video series Choice Cuts went away for a bit...but now it's back with a new look and feel.
For the series' reboot, we've adopted a "group discussion" format which we've toyed with in the past. Our guests for this episode include Brea Grant (Dexter, Best Friends Forever), Evan Dickson (Bloody-Disgusting) and film critic Todd Gilchrist.
The topic on the table: Horror films and their replay value. What are modern horror films missing that is preventing them from being revisited time and time again? We break it all down. Of course, if you have something to say about the issue, head inside, watch the discussion and use our comment boards to weigh in!

We’ve reached the point on the timeline of cinema where just about every Apocalypse tale has been told and retold a hundred times over. So now filmmakers are faced with the task of thinking of every possible angle in order to milk the last drops of life out of world’s end stories. Luckily, Brea Grant’s Best Friends Forever is able to give us an interesting take on the tale, as it asks what would happen if the world was ending and no one remembered to tell you.
Harriet and Reba, played by Grant and co-writer Vera Miao respectively, are road-tripping from Los Angeles to Austin and miss out on the ever-important news that someone has detonated four nuclear bombs in four major American cities. Everyone they come across has already heard the news, but the girls are somehow blissfully oblivious. This leads to a series of encounters...

Brea Grant's debut feature Best Friends Forever is essentially a B-movie. And that's a compliment. So then is it an essential B-movie? Imagine if Roger Corman gave a couple of Punky, feminist chicks a bundle of money to make a movie and the result is an apocalypse road trip movie that is just as grim as it is bad-ass, just as endearingly sweet as it is melancholic, and just plain fun and funny. A crowd-pleaser for the generation that grew up on midnight movies, underground B&W comics, indie music and thrift store shopping, Best Friends Forever checks all the genre boxes with spunk and a bit of bite.Grant stars as Harriet, a comic-book artist who is moving to Austin for Grad School. Following up on yesterday's reports regarding some of the genre fare playing at Slamdance, we now have the trailer for Best Friends Forever, the apocalyptic road movie directed and starring Brea Grant (Dexter, Halloween II) who co-penned the film with co-star Vera Miao.
The film is described as "a clever dark comedy and sci-fi horror movie, combining equal parts heartfelt road trip buddy film and apocalyptic disaster story, with two badass girls. Harriet, a perpetually optimistic comic-book artist, dreams of escaping her past in Los Angeles and hits the road for a new life in Austin, Texas. She drags Reba her seemingly devil-may-care Bff, along for the ride. After nuclear bombs explode in four cities, the girls are forced to ask: When faced with the end of the world - what is most important to you?"

No limits. No fear. That's the motto of this next Slamdance Film Festival, the 19th iteration happening in Park City alongside of Sundance. Indiewire has posted an animated intro promo for Slamdance 2013 and it's a rather awesome video worth sharing. Plus it's a great way to give Slamdance and their line-up a shout out. The artwork and this video for Slamdance 2013 was created by Bill Sneed of Yankee Peddler. They have previously featured the unveiling of Bill's "Rocket to Unchartered Territory" key art (seen as the teaser image above) which plays prominently in the animated video. If you're attending...
