Crawling 90 minutes
tux-1213 August 2014
Warning: Spoilers
This film is only 1h30 but seems to be 3h long. Very little happens and you follow a team crawling through pipes and narrow tunnels in order to escape some kind of monster. Explanations to why they have to do it this painful and dangerous way, are reduced to a minimum. There are other films such as The Descent, The Cave or The Cavern, where all the action is under ground. But these were way better than this one. Because there was a real script, plenty of twists and action, good acting and more generally good filming.

The fact of having a tiny budget does not justify the lack of imagination and does not excuse the boring final product. Some spectators will probably leave half way into the film, some will just keep playing with their tablets or mobile, while checking every 10 minutes to see if the story has moved on. And some, like those who wrote early reviews, may even find it good. Sorry, but not me.

Pathetic Alien Ripoff
penzgyarinfo13 August 2014
I don't want to be rude but this was really a weak try. Okay, I understand that it's a low budget non-blockbuster b-movie but come on... Even with this amount of resources something better could have been accomplished. The monster is a weak alien redo. The actors are okay but the script is really nothing worth mentioning. The whole movie could have told its content in 25 minutes, from which 20 minutes is 'girl crawling in a hole'. The rest is just repeated lines/acts of the actors and too long cuts of the same things, like movements, etc. The whole thing becomes cheesy and boring because of this. Also, the 'monster does not die of 1000 bullet hits but from a small fire' is really out of fashion since the 80's. Disappointing. Maybe next time they can come up with something more interesting.

Not what I expected, and not in a good way.

Warning: Spoilers
I've seen a lot of good publicity for this movie, and when I saw it was on the horror channel a while ago, I decided to record it and give it a go. I mean, when all I've seen are really good reviews for it, what's the harm in giving it a go?

I have to say - I regretted this decision.

Now, don't get me wrong. I understood what the movie was trying to do, I understood, I really did. But after seeing Oklahoma Ward and Nicole Alonso publicising this moving up to a 10/10 (of course, I knew this was publicity – I assumed the movie would be a 6 or 7 out of 10), I was thoroughly disappointed.

I felt the plot lagged on, and the whole movie was slow. The opening was exciting, of course, but it took so long for it to get through. The whole premise of the movie wasn't understandable, to me, anyway, and I had to find a synopsis online to actually discover what the movie was about.

I appreciate the horror aspects in this movie, but, for me, I didn't find the movie that scary.

A woman, crawling through pipes, again and again, is not scary to me. I understand that to some with claustrophobia, it will be scarier, but for me, this movie didn't do much. I ended up online, searching through my list of to-watch horror movies, which probably doesn't bode well. Then again, I'm sure a lot of people will enjoy this movie.

It just wasn't for me. I won't be watching this movie again, and I definitely wouldn't recommend it.

Incredibly Bad
politehere11 May 2015
I have seen hundreds of horror movies, but this one was one of the worst. It was so pretentious and of such poor quality that I couldn't focus on the non-existent story. Some people are writing positive reviews saying considering what little budget it had it was passable. I disagree. I think a horror movie needs good acting to be convincing and good special effects if it employs any. Clearly a movie that is trying to portray futuristic High-Tec stuff and is in dire need of special effects cannot and should not be low-budget; otherwise, it will be total garbage just like this movie.

Some people seem to like claustrophobic movies and if that's why they're writing raving reviews for this horrible movie, I'd suggest that you go watch The Pyramid (2014). It's claustrophobic, it has great acting and cinematography and it comes with a lot of effective jump scares. You can even re-watch The Descent (2005), but trust me, with Crawl or Die you're just going to be angry with yourself for wasting your time and money.

This is about as bad as it gets
gtc839 December 2015
Warning: Spoilers
A punk rock chick spends 75 minutes crawling through a culvert while being chased by an Alien type monster. First she crawls through a regular culvert, then she crawls through a very narrow tunnel, then for the big climax she crawls through a culvert that's three- quarters full of dirt. There's dialogue, but you can't understand 90% of it - not that it matters in the slightest. The whole thing is edited together in such a way that you haven't got a clue what's going on. You hear gunshots, but you don't know if the people you're looking at are shooting or being shot at. It's all very dark and every half second or so, just as you've almost made out what you're looking at, the scene changes, and changes, and changes.

This is just as bad as it gets. I've watched literally hundreds of low budget horror and sci-fi movies and there's absolutely no excuse for making a movie where we are literally watching someone crawl through a culvert the entire time.

Garbage

Warning: Spoilers
Poor continuity sometimes. Like someone forgot which side a wound was supposed to be on when they rocked up for the next days filming... although the way this movie went... it probably only took a day. I especially loved the part where the soldier fired multiple rounds, one handed, from his bolt action machine gun? What? The plot is thin, the acting painfully forced sometimes. The sound... well i don't know what happened there. Sometimes the sound effects for the guns or something dropped out of the scene. The action continued and other effects were there... i thought maybe i had a problem with my PC... After putting up with the first 30 minutes, i skimmed ahead. It wasn't like i missed much. And there were only 2 possible outcomes that were blindingly obvious. Low budget? Or should it have been no budget. And i wonder if Spielberg knows where Aliens head went....? I do...

I love sci-fi and a bit of drama... but this was pathetic. If it wasn't for the lead actress ending up in her sports bra and pants, i would have stopped watching about half way through.

Oh... and for a "new" planet... who built the tunnels? And i didn't know aliens used padlocks? Sorry, i guess I'm not supposed to think logically after-all, it is only a movie.

OMG, so bad, so so so bad
cyberdeck200015 October 2014
I read the top few reviews and gave this mess a shot. If you are a horny boy with a broken game box, no other thing on TV and have never seen a girl in a swimsuit, you might enjoy 5 minutes of this over the course of the film. It is plot less, joyless, boring, tedious and just plain stupid.

Premise, last surviving fertile woman is taken to a new planet. Crack team is supposed to protect her at all costs for the sake of the continuation of humanity. Okay, fine, endless versions of this but even the Scifi Channel has better offerings. It starts bad, gets worse, bottoms for a while. Then it bounces up to almost interesting for a few minutes before tunneling to get below zero for interest, intelligence or a reason for being. Whoever wrote this seriously needs to not write anything ever again.

In this unrealistic (suspension of disbelief is not even a dream) and preposterous plot hole, with the (I can't think of a description bad enough) wardrobe on the women, panting and squirming. Crawl or die is one of the worst films I have ever sat through. Being one of those unfortunate people who always has to see the end, I have a blinding headache to show for my curiosity.

The lead actress did her job in her ridiculous outfit and was at least competent. That in no way helped make this mess anything but a sad waste of my time.

You're better off pulling up a chair to a window in your home and looking out.
Someguysomwhere16 March 2015
First: I don't want to be too hard on the producers of this video. At least they're not out robbing banks and make an honest living trying -as best as they know how- to bring us entertainment. I would give them 10 stars for that if it were a criteria for rating here. But alas! It is not.

The earth is overrun by the "OVT" virus (Whatever the f!!ck that is) and a special forces unit is given the task of escorting -in their commander's words- "the last non-infected, virus-free, fertile woman alive" to Earth 2. Now he could have just said "non-infected" or "virus-free" but repeatedly chose to compound those two terms (Maybe he thought his team was stupid and wasn't taking any chances in case they didn't understand the meaning of one term?).

This movie is brought to us, we are told at the start, by "Backyard Films" which is something I can well believe. I couldn't make sense of the action in the first part of this video (I can't call this a "movie" folks). Speaking of action, the last two-thirds of the movie is spent in narrow underground tubes or tunnels. One is of some kind of plastic or metal and the other is soil. It gets increasingly cramped. So much so, they can only move an inch at a time WHEN THEY MOVE. If you can't run, kick, jump, shoot -where's the entertainment? What we see mostly is people inching or crawling along like this dull video. After inching forward about 3 inches, the lead chick stops, grimaces, looks around, musters up some incredible inner reserve and moves 3 more inches. And so on, and so on. I kid you not, this is a huge chunk of this "movie".

Maybe the people who made this video knew it was going to get dull once they got to the narrow tunnels, so just before she goes in, the lead Ops chick who has a blonde punk mohawk hair style, and wears knee-high fetish boots with thick rubber soles, takes off her pants and gives it to the doctor to rip into strips for bandage for the injured non-infected "plus" virus-free woman. She's now left wearing some ultra short shorts (At this point I perk up). This could get interesting if the camera guy or gal does his or her job properly. Unfortunately the camera person was "gun-shy", so to speak and didn't give me the angles and close-ups I wanted. Maybe the Backyard people didn't want to appear exploitive. In which case: Why use all of the punk Ops pants for bandage? Could have just used the legs. But they had her strip down to her short shorts and then chickened out once she got in the tunnels.

Now before anyone thinks of me as base, let me say this: If you're going to confine a woman so she can't run, jump, shoot, face-off with that cheap Alien knock-off of a creature -what else is there? If you want to keep at least "some" of your audience, you might as well use your camera to lovingly study the beauty of the female form as she pushes, struggles, and wiggles thru some very tight places. Love, Boloxxxi.

Micro budget. Highly intense. It's a slow burn.
7/10 to get the ratings up a few points. Otherwise I would give it a high 6 to pass the threshold of "should see" / "worth watching."

You have to judge it for what it is and the constraints.

The plot is entirely incidental to the flow.

The Descent, Beneath, Buried, .REC, Alien, Cube, Dead Calm, Open Water, Das Boot, The Vanishing, this takes claustrophobia to a new level, or depth .

It's not reasonable to compare those movies to Crawl because of the constraints. hold Crawl to that level of quality.

Don't fast forward it because the value of the movie is in the extreme intensity and claustrophobia.

My anxiety level built up to the point at the 2/3 mark I had to take a break and a sedative. If I'm going to have a heart attack, I want it to be for something really enjoyable that involved several companions and wreck my marriage! Just kidding!

I'm thinking the whole time how incredibly fit the protagonist is and boy do I need get off the couch. What a motivator.

A couple of improvements - personally - I would have made: no special audio effects. Sound, yes but not effects. Sometimes, less is more. That's worth a point in itself.

There's some obvious/blatant copy/paste from other movies. But they are not important. Just let it go.

Lastly, I watched it at 2 in the morning by myself. Perfect recipe.

Enjoy the show. Disregard the very high and the very low reviews and you'll get a more accurate/objective recommendation.

Low Budget Alien.
Krackoon4 September 2014
Warning: Spoilers
It's easy to see the influence that 'Alien' has on the director of 'Crawl or Die,' and for good reason, because 'Alien' just happens to be one of the best horror films ever created. The problem with 'Crawl or Die,' other than the budget - unlike 'Alien' we never get a chance to get to know the characters, or their 'package.' The film pretty much jumps right into the action, as if we missed the first 30 minutes of the film. I'm not sure why any director would consider this a good way to go about it.

One of the things I enjoy about 'Alien' is the character development. a good example would be Yaphet Kotto's character, who continued to grow on me throughout the film, and by the time the credits started to roll, he ended up being one of my favorite characters in the film. That's something we never get in 'Crawl or Die.' The characters only seem to exist, to be killed off. Now, if you ask the director about this, I'm sure he'll throw out Nicole Alonso's character to state his case, but, at least for me, that went out the window as soon as her pants came off, and the entire second half of the film was focused on what she wasn't wearing. That's just not what I look for in films.

Random Ramblings of a Madman: 'Crawl or Die' is a pass, even with the 30 minute underwear shot. Perhaps the sequel can focus more on the main actresses acting and character - or maybe a prequel, to make up for the missing half of this film? Either way, I'll give it a chance, but my expectations will remain low. Just remember something, Directors - Sigourney Weaver stayed fully clothed, and never missed a beat.

Fun and very claustrophobic chase movie
StepstonefilmsImdb18 August 2014
If you don't mind low-budget and you enjoy sci-fi horror, then you might enjoy this.

I almost stopped watching at the beginning but decided to stick with it, and I'm glad I did, because once they get into the tunnels/pipes, it changes gears and becomes kind of unique The farther they get into the tunnels the more intense it gets, and it doesn't let up. There's no side story to cut away to, you're stuck with them, in the tight spaces till the end. I read somewhere this only cost something like $8,000 to make, which is a pittance in filmmaking terms, so I think the makers are to be commended for the final product. It won't win any Oscars, but it's not supposed to, but as a sci-fi horror film, it offers more than films costing a helluva lot more.

I've seen a lot of films, probably too many, and I don't recall ever feeling as claustrophobic as I did watching this. I read online that a Japanese critic called it THE MOST CLAUSTROPHOBIC FILM EVER... might not be too far from the truth. It certainly is relentless till the end.

I've noticed people are leaving a lot of negative remarks. I feel they're not really giving it a chance. Appreciate it for what it is. It's a comic book style action sci-fi horror chase movie, that delivers a prolonged intense chase for most of the film, and for the most part delivers a pretty unique experience. Watch it loud and with the lights out, you should have fun.

Ripley-Lite Battles Extremely Creepy Alien In Very Close Quarters
umimelectric4 November 2017
Surprisingly good production value in this tense story of claustrophobic horror survival.

One killer heroine called Tank, in the tone of Ellen Ripley, stands out as a tough warrior with both brains and beauty. The audience is treated with intense action scenes, gory deaths & sweet shots of Nicole Alonso's fabulous, scantily clad backside. She is a producer of the film so she doesn't mind! I would recommend this film to any horror or sci-fi fan out there, especially those who enjoy the film Alien. The plot is exciting, the effort of the characters is exhausting, and the path to freedom is dark and treacherous.

This is an example of a smaller studio sci-fi/horror film done right. I like it so much that this review was written now years after my initial viewing, and directly after my second viewing. It's just one that stuck with me, and maybe you too.

A poorly written fan letter
paround7015 March 2015
Just how on earth is this receiving the high marks on IMDb? I can only imagine it's friends and family of the film maker and cast that are writing them because the reviews do not reflect the quality of this film. It's a badly scripted and badly realised mish mash of influences such as Alien, Aliens and The Descent but without any of the things that made those memorable such as a cohesive plot or character development.

The characters are so one dimensional as to be non existent and are mostly confined to a couple of sentences along with a grunt or two. The main protagonist is a poor copy of Tank Girl and seems to think that simply curling your lip is an accurate portrayal of being tough.

The plot has very big holes and inconsistencies which I don't believe were deliberate but rather that the writer couldn't be bothered to actually be doing with such things and believe that the action would carry it along. That may have been true if the pacing didn't veer from confused to drawn out. This wouldn't work even as a poorly executed video game. The one thing it does do fairly reasonably is a claustrophobic cinematography but this is a one trick pony and wears thin very quickly. If this had been edited down to a 20 minute short it may have had its merits but at its current length this film shows its inadquecies in a woeful manner for all to see.

They say imitation is the highest form of flattery but in this case I really would change that to insult. I don't mind no budget films and love experimental, challenging, indie and art house films but this fails on every level leaving the viewer robbed of the time watching this that could have been used more constructively - for example watching paint dry.

This was just boring...
paul_haakonsen16 August 2014
"Crawl or Die" is essentially a massive snoozefest, especially because everything that is going on is a dwindling number of people who crawl around in confined spaces that progressively gets smaller and smaller, and the people are chased by a creature that looks like a poor man's rendering of the icon creature from "Alien".

Yep, that was basically the entire storyline. The story was simple to the point of being braindead.

Acting-wise, well it was adequate. I mean, what talent does it take to crawl around in confined spaces that get more and more narrow. And there were very little dialogue in the movie as well.

I will say that the camera-work throughout the movie was alright, and the editing was alright as well. And these were actually the two brightest moments of the entire movie.

As mentioned above, the creature was a rip off of the iconic alien creature from the "Alien" movies, from the spines along the back, to the tail, and to the head. Except that it was a poor man's version of the Alien creature.

"Crawl or Die" was 86 minutes of life that I will never get back, and I can't think of a single reason for recommending this movie to anyone.

Celebration of claustrophobia
Blonde22912 September 2014
Warning: Spoilers
"Crawl or Die" is an interesting "chased by monster" movie running entirely inside dark cylindrical tunnels.

The story is similar to the "American Cyborg: Steel Warrior (1993)" where they are trying to save the only woman who can give birth to a baby, and "Alien (1979)" where they are trying to save their ass in dark surroundings from - well, aliens! But the small budget of "Crawl or Die" keeps it from achieving the same results as these great movies.

The monster in "Crawl or Die" has a striking resemblance to the "Alien" monster. But it is not as smart. Even though it chased TANK all the way to the end, yet it keeps standing like stupid in the end - ready to be torched any time she pleased.

But the claustrophobic environment created by the tunnels has its desired effect. The cylindrical tunnels seem never to end and keep becoming smaller in size, making it very difficult to crawl inside them. You may fall off your chair during the scene where they have to crawl under a horizontal construction with very little clearance.

In short, while the story looks partly borrowed from well known movies, the direction and the superb acting of Nicole Alonso (the TANK character) has turned it into a good thriller. I hope the sequel(s) have something unexpected and unique to offer.

Unbelievably uncreative
ace-617858 March 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I made sure to check mark the "contains spoilers," but quite frankly, it's sarcastically. I mean this movie is literally people crawling through tubes for like an hour. I mean I knew what I was getting into, but I thought there would be variation and excitement. It was the same tube over and over, and sometimes it had dirt in it...for an hour! After 10 minutes of crawling through a tube I started jumping 5 minutes ahead with the remote and burned through the rest of the movie and yeah its just crawling through a tube. The best way to watch this movie would be on fast forward 4x.

2 stars for the movie 10 for Nicole Alonso.
ebernardsmith28 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The issues with the film is simply OVERKILL. Too much monster noise, it's pretty much constant. Too much time spent crawling (I understand the title and all but come on), 20 minutes of crawling, look for monster, crawl some more look for monster, repeat until suddenly (and unsurprisingly) the much larger monster is some how scurrying through each "smaller than the last" hole. The fact that no matter what the monster just keeps coming and coming makes the film boring, the monster isn't clever or sneaky it just doesn't stop for long, even when devouring it's last victim.

I will say this however... Tank (Nicole Alonso) is gorgeous and has an AMAZING body which was one of the main reasons I finished watching. Don't get me wrong, I've seen far worse films it just feels like with a few tweaks this film could be REALLY cool. Also make the creature look less ALIEN ripoff.

Impressive Low-Budget Indie That Rocked
chrismackey197227 August 2014
I was very impressed. It was low budget that had about $7,000 or so put into it. Don't let that dissuade you from watching it. They squeezed everything they could out of the money they had and came up with an entertaining film. Nicole Alonso did a very good job as the kick-ass, tough girl marine (or whatever part of the military she was in). Not meaning to sound perverted, but I'm glad she stripped down do her panties. lol She has a nice body. Her acting was very good, and the emotion she put into the scenes I thought was also very accurate. The script had limited dialogue, but she didn't need to say much, because her facial expressions conveyed what she was going through. I'm not one who cares much for the tight confines of the tunnels, but they made it work pretty much for the film. However, I think it was a little repetitious with all the crawling they did. Still, the acting was better than a lot of the big budget projects out there - hello, Transformers. lol.

One of the peeps who wrote a review on this board said throw some money to these people. I agree. Based on what they did with this production, I think they are the kind of film makers that can make a little money go a long way. Imagine what this movie would've been like had they put $1mil or $2mil into it. I'll be looking forward to seeing what they do next. The horror genre needs all the help it can get. :)

A truly immersive and claustrophobic experience
zombiegothboi14 August 2014
Crawl or Die is not your typical Hollywood Action/Horror movie. Yes, there are guns, explosions, and four-letter words, but the slow pace and psychological aspect make it feel more like a Japanese or Korean horror film.

The cinematography is beautiful (especially for such a low budget), and really brings out the feeling of claustrophobia. The creature design, while remnant of the late H.R. Giger's work on Alien, still manages to bring something new to the table. The dialog does get a bit muddy/echoey, but that is to be expected from the location, and I think anything cleaner may actually detract from the immersion.

No, it's not the most original story, but it is done in a new way that is quite enjoyable with the right mindset. If you are looking for boobs, blood, and Bay'splosions, keep looking, but if you want a truly immersive, claustrophobic, and terrifying experience, check out 'Crawl or Die'

Great Sci-Fi/Thriller
nwosting200210 August 2014
Warning: Spoilers
After attending the U.S. premiere of Crawl or Die I can say wholeheartedly that Nicole Alonso And Oklahoma Ward will be extremely successful in their respective careers.

The action scenes are wonderfully crafted and the set design/cinematography is amazing. The story is what I call a slow burn but the emotional roller coaster the film takes you on before ending with a bang (pun intended)is so worth the wait.

The special effects are tremendous, especially when you consider the modest budget the cast and crew had to work with but they made due with what they had and created quite a few memorable moments. If you suffer from even the mildest form of claustrophobia you might want to have a paper bag handy, as the majority of the film takes place in an extremely confined area.

As far as the acting goes, everyone in the cast, whether they have a speaking role or not, did a wonderful job of purveying intense emotion and setting the tone for each and every scene. Crawl or Die is the first installment in a planned trilogy of films that I, for one, can not wait to see. If all goes as planned, we may even see a few familiar faces that are considered legends in the sci-fi community in the upcoming releases.

The only negative I can come up with at the moment is the name change, I REALLY liked the original (Well, second...if you want to get technical) title of Crawl Bitch Crawl, but certain retailers balked at selling a film with such a graphic title even though they jump at the chance to distribute music by pop artists with the same, if not worse language.

Fear not, fans of crude and sometimes socially unacceptable language, I was informed by Mr. Ward that a Directors Cut of the film will be released at some point, under the original name and featuring bonus footage Crawl or Die was not able to use because of these restrictions.

This review doesn't contain what I would consider spoilers but....I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Watch and die....of boredom Warning: Spoilers
You know that bit in James Cameron's Aliens where the Marines are being chased through the air vents by the aliens. That's this movie but painfully dragged over and hour and a half, so better just watching that scene from aliens and sapre you this twaddle. The lead character is a punk rock hair salon model and the rest of the "elite" team are whoever was in the local heavy metal bar on the day of shooting. There is no character intro or even development so its just random folk muttering unintelligible dialogue about the package in the dark. If you're claustrophobic this might be tense or scary but anybody else it 90 mins of a hair salon model crawling through industrial piping and small spaces breathing heavy and shining her torch. The director/producer must have said that he would make her a star as she seems to be down to her underwear pretty quick for no reason and thinks heavy breathing is the acting style for being under stress . I appreciate low budget films but this is a joke the alien monster rip-off is unapologetic and seems to defies the laws of physics in its size and ability to navigate small spaces. Tagged as the most claustrophobic movie ever it obviously hasn't seen Descent or the lower budget Adrenalin: Fear the Rush (1996) which is very similar and far better even now. Why people are given money to make these mockeries gets me they are no early sam raimi thats for sure. Avoid unless you like hair salon models in tunnels

Idiotic, Boring, and an Alien Rip off
arfdawg-117 March 2015
An elite security team assigned the task of protecting the last known woman who can become pregnant, find themselves caught in an endless claustrophobic underground tunnel system.

The team soon learns - the real horror is not the unstoppable force chasing them, but the ever growing smaller tunnel itself.

OMG! his is the worst Alien rip off ever.

I goes on and on forever with the blurriest darkest scenes you are thankful not to be able to see only to pull out a complete rip off of the alien monster!

What?

It's idiotic.

Hmm. When the production company is called Backyard Films you know the film is going to be cheap, but not this cheap: CRAWL OR DIE is one of the worst horror films I've seen in, oh, a month or so; a poverty-row, originality-free production with a scant storyline, poor dialogue, non-existent acting, and a generally all-too-familiar narrative.

The storyline involves the last fertile woman on Earth (you know, like in CHILDREN OF MEN). She has to get to a place of safety, so a security team escort her down an endless tunnel, except they're being pursued by an alien beast intent on chomping down on human flesh. The entire film seems to have borrowed the air vent scenes from ALIEN and ALIENS and extended them to feature length.

This should be a claustrophobic film but the level of ineptitude means it's just boring instead. The only part I liked was how the tunnel is constantly narrowing, but not much is done with that premise either. The film is too dark, too derivative, with characters you can never muster up the energy to care about. It seems the director was going for a scary, THE DESCENT-style atmosphere, but it's entirely missing. This film's a dud.
