The ending left me unfulfilled
hellocannes3 February 2023
The story is unique but then the pacing of the series makes it dull sometimes. At one point I thought the climax was coming but then the buildup stopped all of a sudden, leaving me with confusion and immense disappointment.

The most unacceptable part is the ending. I thought the entire backstory would be revealed at last, but then the series suddenly ended with half of the truth remain concealed. I guess it was done on purpose to leave it for Season 2? Not sure if I would give it another shot if there is another season though.

Acting of the cast is impeccable though. Yagira Yuya was the reason I watched this series and he never disappoints me. Baisho Mitsuko-san, the actress who played Goto Gin, the grandmother, gave me chills down my spine.

The score serves the series really well in heightening tensions and suspense too.

Overall is fine but I really hate it when a series is not ended properly because some people behind it want to make a sequel.

As real as a real life
Snownoise1 February 2023
The plot has a familiar theme we've seen in the Hollywood movies and TV shows for a long time, but it's very well integrated into a aging rural society in japan which is the highest selling point here. I've seen a video from a japanese youtuber showing his experience of moving to a remote town in japan. At first those outsiders were welcomed, but soon after they found out that they had to follow so many of town's own rules, and they were being monitored. If they broke one of the rules, somebody in town would correct them. They couldn't bear those things any more, and eventually moved out of the town after living for a couple of years. This is a real thing happened and happening right now. So it's very interesting to see this show after hearing about what's really happening in japan. I've seen a fair share of Jdramas, and never seen a Jdrama like this. It's very unusual Jdrama and a great one at that. The only downside - though it's critical - is SFX. The CGI is really bad. It's below average especially with animals. It's probably related to budget, but still I can't understand why they adapted such a disappointing quality of CGI which distracts a lot from viewing experience. Other than that, being thirst for a new episode every week.

It's not that good

Warning: Spoilers
Really dont understand all the 10/10 reviews. The show itself is okay, the camerawork is great, the rural Japan is portrayed in an excellent way. However the police officers are so dumb and out of this world its unbearable. Maybe they are this stupid for a reason and the second season will explain it but right now they are like: "Yeah we know where the kids are locked up and suffer as we sit around, yeah we know they will be dead within hours, but lets just wait until a random dude says okay, so we can call reinforcements." It hurst to watch. I know this is just a made up story, but why would it be so hard to make a few calls and ask for help: "Hey guys we are going to ambush a few armed kidnappers, could you please come along and just shoot them in the face when they try to grab a weapon? Okay, great, see you in a hour." Its this easy.

A Thrilling Journey Through a Town's Dark Secrets It Will Keep You Guessing Until the Very Last Scene
xlizro2 February 2023
Gannibal is a thrilling and captivating mystery series that sets itself apart from the typical fast-paced police procedural dramas. With a haunting opening scene of a police officer in hysteria, the show immediately draws you in and keeps you on the edge of your seat with each new episode.

The pace of the show is slow, perfectly capturing the stillness of the isolated forest setting and allowing for the mystery to unfold at a deliberate pace. The cinematography is stunning at times and the directing is expertly executed, particularly in the opening scene. However, there are moments when low-budget special effects or unrealistic gunplay briefly break the illusion, but the show quickly gets back on track with its masterful storytelling and gloomy style.

The protagonist, a young and impulsive police officer, is transferred to the small town with his wife and daughter, tasked with uncovering the disappearance of his predecessor. The mystery unravels layer by layer, building suspense and leaving the viewer eagerly anticipating each new episode.

Overall, Gannibal is a refreshing and well-crafted show that offers a unique take on the detective genre. Its dark overtones, slow-paced suspenseful story, and stunning visuals make for a truly mesmerizing experience.

The people-eating village is thrilling every episode.
folk_egm1 February 2023
A Japanese series based on a manga that does well. Seeing as international, for the world to see Not addicted to overacting to be annoying. The plot of a man-eating village may not seem new. But the story goes deep down, there are reasons to support various actions. Of every character well Including the cause of cannibalism that has been described in reference to history, science, biology, to accompany some parts for us to believe accordingly. And secretly addicted to the supernatural as well, and the protagonist of the story, who is a policeman with a mental disorder, comes to investigate strange cases recklessly. The more the story has a boiling scene in every episode. There is a big action scene for the audience to see. But all the scary scenes may not be too harsh or brutal because this story was only made out with a rating of 15+. The story ends at 7 episodes of the first season and is still long overdue according to the original manga. But it's likely to continue until the end. Anyone who likes a series of weird and thrilling flavors Especially from Japan after There are not many outstanding things to see, this event must not be missed.

A hidden gem
cedricrahul19 January 2023
What a wonderful series!

Stumbled upon this series just by luck and boy was I impressed!

1. Story has just the right pace. There is enough buildup for the main story but something or other keeps happening so we feel involved all the time.

2. It's very Beautifully shot. Camera work is exceptional. Specially in episode 3. The director and the cameraman have done exceptional work.

3. All the characters are developed reasonably well. The lead is just perfect for this role. And his personality is built in a very believable manner. No one acts cringy or cliché.

4. The myths or urban legend around which the story is revolving is also dealt in a different way. Not like typical Hollywood series.

I would totally recommend this.

In the 5 episodes that I've seen I can't find a fault.

Riveting and Excellently Executed
marielaltman14 February 2023
This series has a lot of things going for it: action, drama, and high suspense in each episode. The location in rustic Japan is gorgeous, the lush landscape in stark juxtaposition to the macabre happenings in the village run by the villainous Goto family. Great cast and acting, especially by our brave hero, Officer Daigo Agawa (Yagira), self-tasked to take them on.

Gannibal is an intense story of madness and evil brought on by depraved fanaticism. There's also something to be said about perverse family loyalties and doggedly holding on to customs that would make anyone cringe in horror. Very much enjoyed and hope a Season 2 will pick up at the very harrowing moment Episode 7 ended with.

At last something new
ivankyr-6286522 January 2023
Story is unique never seen before, I don't have anything bad to complain, first time writing review, this should be more popular , I don't even know why this show doesn't get promoted as much, lucky few will watch this and recommend it to people, I just hope people reading my review to give it a chance and watch it through, it's not to long or short , 7 episode in total, 40 minutes in total, all actor did a great job, I don't have anything else to say just enjoy the show and leave a review promote this show, Japan doesn't like to promote their own movie/tv show which sucks cuz I really love their movie/ tv series, that's all thanks for reading.

Captivating storytelling and arc building
desketocom27 January 2023
Beginning with a wonderfully executed opening scene of a police officer in hysteria, the show captures you with a sense of morbid intrigue and somehow just builds upon itself with each new episode. However, this isn't a fast paced show that throws high speed curve balls at you to catch you off guard. Instead, it works at a pace that more reflects the perfect stillness of its isolated forest setting, with a slow moving sinister undertone beneath its canopy. You follow the trail of a new, young, and impetuous police officer who's transferred with his wife and daughter to a small town precinct as its only law enforcing officer. While presiding over the unassuming sleepy territory, he never quite settles down as he attempts to uncover the disappearance of his predecessor (the very same hysterical officer from the opening scene). The detective mystery unravels one layer at a time but not so quickly that the viewer quite figures out what's happening too soon. The end of each episode creates a brooding desire to guess what will happen in each new following episode as the story builds suspense and the towns nefarious secret begins to show its face.

The directing is top notch at times, as in the opening scene. And the cinematography is artful-at times. However, the show isn't perfectly polished and ends up breaking you from its hypnosis at points, usually caused by low budget computer effects, or unbelievable gun play. As an American watching a Japanese show with gun fighting and usage, the gun physics was laughable. A shotgun with no recoil from shooting what appears to be slugs was boggling to me. But you can't blame a culture that doesn't glorify gun violence to pay much attention to that type of detail. Nonetheless, the show tends to stick to its lane of masterful storytelling over pretending to be a fast action shoot em up, thankfully. It's not long after each noticeable deviation before Gannibal entrances you back in with its storyline and gloomy style.

This show is well worth the watch, definitely refreshing despite its dark overtones.

Not to be missed by fans of suspense drama
audia-2409914 March 2023
The picturesque village on the surface hides behind the rumors of a horrible cannibal. The police officer is transferred to a remote mountain town, with his wife and daughter to start a new life in the area, but he encountered a series of shocking events, because he had heard that "the village will eat people", so he gradually began to believe this statement.

The whole episode has a very tense atmosphere, showing the mysterious face of the village from the very beginning and making the viewers strongly curious about the story. Each character's clues and scenes are closely linked together, and the tense plot progresses step by step, making the audience's heart beat faster.

It is a pity that the last episode did not finish the story, is it a preparation for the second season?

Overall, this drama is a very good suspense drama. Not only does it have a gripping plot and deep characterization, but if you're a fan of suspenseful dramas, then you can't miss this wonderful episode.

Japanese series like no other.
rulramdhani2 February 2023
Just finished watching the finale. And here is my tough.

First, Japan it's not really famous with their film and tv series industry but this one is different It shows you pretty good cinematic experience, good acting, thrilling experience, decent action, and intriguing story. You seldom find cocky situation or scene where you kinda feel shame watching.

Second, It describes you how society works at small village in Japan. They have their own culture and rules that must be obey to the stranger or newcomers. They strict and discipline.

Third, they also show us that protecting your family is number Aaone. Whether your fail or success family is number one.

Conclusion: MUST WATCH !!!

Horror well done!
beautiee-632971 February 2023
This is show is compelling from start to finish. The acting done on all parts makes it hard to separate the actor from the character. I went to the Manga to compare the plot, and it was transferred to screen beautifully, bringing the whole story alive.

I really have no complaints and wish there was another season. I've been watching each week since the beginning, waiting with eagerness for more of the story to unfold. The pacing is spot on and the season is on 7 episodes. I was drawn into the story in the first 5 minutes alone. If you enjoy true crime or thrillers, this show is also a great watch. I appreciate how each of the characters are well developed with interconnected back stories. I really wish more people were talking about it!

I'm glad I watched this.
foreverinflow5 February 2023
First off, everything is well and beautifully shot. Every scene is a sight to behold as we're shown how beautiful Kuge village is. Moreover, there's no unnecessary camera movement that brings no meaning apart from telling the audience what's important.

Secondly, the acting is really true to life and nothing like those typical animated J-dramas with dramatic and over emphasize movements. I actually didn't knew that Yuya Yagira was the same one in Hirokazu Koreeda's previous works. His acting was brilliant with his signature mouth movements that's understandable even without uttering any words.

Third, the plot is well written and executed that I can't skip nor miss any scenes at all, or I'll end up missing the whole picture.

Finally, I hope the director will keep doing wonderful films and I look forward to seeing his works in the future.

A Titillating, Macabre Tale
EntertheRaptor3 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Cannibalism isn't a light topic by any standard, but Gannibal manages to intertwine it with a story about redemption, guilt, the innocence of children, outdated rural culture, and morality. That's a lot of layers to sift through. From the start of the series, there is a hint at the lead character's (Daigo) troubled past. He is a police officer who is sent to work in a small village. To add to that, his daughter Mashiro has stopped talking. We find out what exactly caused these unfortunate circumstances later in the series. Daigo's wife, Yuki, seems to be the only normal person in their family.

Enter Kuge village - A fictional town (Thank Zeus) with a small population that appears idyllic on the surface, but has many secrets. The Goto family unofficially controls the village and is feared by the rest of the inhabitants. Meanwhile, there is a subplot about the previous police officer in Kuge who went missing while investigating the Gotos.

Daigo, for all his faults, is an upright person and tries to uncover what happened to his predecessor. What slowly begins to emerge is a dark and creepy practice of cannibalism and child sacrifice that dates back many years. It is overwhelming to watch how Daigo and his family have to juggle their own demons while dealing with real demons that are causing havoc in Kuge.

A must-watch if you like thrillers and character-driven stories.

P. S. Kokone Shimizu, the little girl who plays Mashiro steals the spotlight every time she appears.

Really hope there's a season 2
jatstar-112-88389125 November 2023
Great story, keeps you guessing. Something new and different. Characters aren't perfect but that just makes the show more interesting.

I'm more than a little bothered with the cliffhanger at the end of the season, if we don't get a second season Im going to be so mad. Even thought that happens a lot these days. Im surprised this is the first time I've come across this show, Im in Australia and stumbled upon it on Disney plus.

Anyways check it out if you like Korean police mystery drama with a little horror sprinkled in. I thoroughly enjoyed it and binged it over a weekend. I hope enough people watch it so we get a conclusion.

Surprising!
carrera-silvio16 January 2024
By far the best Japanese series I have seen. It honestly stands tall among the many TV Shows out there. The acting is subtle for the most part, the main actors are outstanding.

At times it made me think of Get Out. You have that feeling of something wrong. The pacing pf the series is just right. It keeps feeding you information and pulling you along.

There are a couple of characters that overdo on the acting. Which is common in a Japanese show. But for the most part it is very consistent. There an enormous sense of dread and intrigue throughout.

I am surprised this hasn't got more attention. It's a superb show! Curious to find more Japanese shows like this.
