There's an inescapably somber tone throughout 'God's Work'; Cooper's still struggling with Tang's handling of her shooting a kid, Lydia and Ruben get to the bottom of a Schwarzeneggeresque nanny affair and Sherman once again gets in over his head. He takes a dangerous interest in a mother/daughter pair of prostitutes that he can't hope to shake off.
Just why this affects him so much is anything but clear (historically, he has a loathing of rapists, so that I can understand) outside of it being just a case of a good cop who can't pull away; the guy even goes so far as to stalk their scumbag pimp after hours, leading to a harsh scene between himself and Bryant (the best scene in the episode, and this coming from a guy who loves to see bad people on the receiving end of bloody street justice).
I still don't like the way Tang's being handled, and the nanny case is uneventful, but (for once) it's Bryant and Sherman carrying the week.
