When emotional intelligence meets science-fiction… Who you gonna call ?
igoatabase7 April 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Agent Lee of course ! What would be the writers next step ? I never expected they would develop the little chat Lincoln and Peter had in the car. And to tell truth if I had known this episode would be Lincoln centric I probably would have pouted. But the impossible happened, agent Lee grew on me and Seth Gabel's character has reached a complexity worthy of hardcore sci-fi fans. From the actor's performance to the wowing scenes featuring both Lees it's one of these episodes that deserve to be seen a second time. So far I had really missed the other side, specially Fauxlivia. That's why a shapeshifter driven story felt refreshing even if I could use a faster pace. I mean we have already reached sublevel 17 and it's a bit like the new Lincoln had been introduced three episodes ago.

Still let's focus on what went right because such an overwhelming installment deserves respect. First our favorite writing recipe stroke back as Lincoln's arc was brilliantly enriched by the shapeshifter's creepy, sad and inspiring story. I was specially moved by the homeless entering the gloomy room with his eyes ready to cry. Once transformed into the drug addict his speech about becoming A Better Human Being and finally feeling special was also quite interesting. You could feel, thanks to Gabel's empathic acting, that Lincoln exactly knew what he was talking about. In fact I can't help comparing the shapeshifter to Dexter Morgan. Indeed he chose to sacrifice criminals, contrary to most other freaks. Therefore he was less immoral and proved that a damaged synthetic creature isn't that different than a human with a broken heart. His Dark Passenger was David Jones and Lincoln's ability to comprehend his motivation helped him find the light. Finally his last moment with Fauxlivia seemed like a ghost whispering at a sorrowing soul. Was it real or just a dream ?

Another Great Episode

Warning: Spoilers
When Olivia forgets the encounters she had with Lincoln, he feels misplaced in the Fringe Division and asks Broyles to go to the parallel universe as the substitute for Astrid to deliver two boxes of documents of cases to help the other side. He offers to help the alternate Olivia in a new case that she is investigating about a vigilante that helped a woman in danger, killing the criminal and leaving the body disfigured. When two workers find several bodies in a quarantine area, they suspect that shapeshifters might be the responsible. Soon they capture a prototype of shapeshifter called Canaan and Broyles calls Nina to tell where Canaan is. Nina sends a sniper that misses Canaan and hits the alternate Lincoln. Now Canaan decides to help the fringe Division. What will happen next?

"Everything in Its Right Place" is another great episode of "Fringe". Captain Lincoln Lee is dead; Lincoln seems to be decided to stay in the parallel world; and Nina is arrested by the Fringe Division. Will the mole Broyles be discovered soon? My vote is eight.

Balance Episode
Hitchcoc16 November 2023
Lincoln goes over to the other side because he is under-appreciated and a bit bored. He's lost his romantic prospect in Olivia and decides to meet his match (literally). Shapeshifter are abundant on that side and he quickly finds himself in the middle of a case involving the deaths of criminals and petty felons. He is even tempered and begins to be appreciated. He also is accepted by Bolivia. Eventually, he makes a connection that seems significant. Unfortunately, there is collateral damage big time. Well done episode with a kind of reclamation project who realizes that Jones isn't the salvation he portends to be.

Canaan's Land

Warning: Spoilers
All the good stuff happens "Over There." Agent Lee has been moping around like a 5th Wheel ever since Olivia got Olivia's Memories back. We've seen the wheels rolling, during the time of "No Peter" - There was an obvious sexual tension between Agent Lee and Olivia. How would one of us feel, after meeting an Olivia, just to have a Peter come along and take her away? I'd feel the same way Agent Lee feels. But our Agent Lee, he's just too nice of a guy - Always has been, thats the difference between Our Agent Lee and the Agent Lee from "Over There." And So "Our" Agent Lee takes a slight vacation over on "The Other Side" - And gets wrapped up in a Fringe case.

"Over there," the Fringe agents are Honoured Heroes. This in stark contrast to "Our" side where nobody knows the existence of Fringe Division.

Meanwhile a shapeshifter is killing crooks. Pretty Creepy Shapeshifter, what does it want? Why is it attacking Petty Crooks and taking their identities? Why is it protecting women who are being attacked by perverts? Tim Guinee plays one of the perverts who attacks a woman, the shapeshifter (Named "Caanan") takes Tim Guinee's face. Maximino Arciniega is also a petty crook/Drug dealer, who gets absorbed by Caanan after Tim Guinee. Seems like Caanan cant' keep the body as long as the other Shapeshifter 2.0's in this timeline, or even as long as the one who Occupied Agent Charlie Francis. But Caanan is not like other Shifters, he's got it... Built-In. Where as Shapeshifters 1.0 used a device, Caanan has the device "Built-In."

Why is this shifter going after Low-Lifes? The answer is related to our Agent Lee's problem - And both "guys" are looking for the same thing.

And it seemed pretty Hopeless that this hapless Shapeshifter - Who was vainly waiting for David Robert Jones to "Fix" Him - would find any usable answers at all, except to absorb more crooks. But Agent Lee, in finding an answer for himself - Finds a solution for our Shapeshifter as well.

In this episode, some real progress is made by Fringe Division "Over There" against Jones. But this victory cost way too much- I'm sure this is not the solution Lee was looking for.

Meanwhile, has Alt-Astrid figured out their Broyles is In Deep with Jones? She knows something, she has that look in her eye.

The beginning of the end for Fringe
VinceGambini29 August 2019
This is one hell of a roller-coaster ride. The best and worst episodes, all in one and the same season. This episode was a new low, unfortunately. The story of Lincoln trying to help Fringe in the other universe felt like a filler: confusing and pointless. His character is likeable but not important enough to be given so much space. And what's more, it was all so boring. A shame but I guess with the benefit of hindsight we'll see that this was the beginning of the end of Fringe. Season 5 as we know was only a half season. Looks like the writers are running out of ideas. Fair enough, the show had an excellent run so far. But you remove Walter and Peter from the storyline and this is what you get.
