Early in Pictures of Ghosts, writer-director Kleber Mendonça Filho cuts to a television interview with his late mother, Joselice Jucá, a historian and a key figure in the film. The interviewer asks why she’s chosen an oral history as the medium for a project on Brazilian abolitionist leader Joaquim Nabuco. As she explains her process, Mendonça Filho’s voice enters to note that “it may seem like I’m discussing methodology, but I’m talking about love.” The filmmaker seems to have taken his mother’s emotional investment in her subject matter to heart, as the methodology in Pictures of Ghosts—a historical document of his hometown of Recife, with a particular focus on its movie theaters—is ultimately in service of the filmmaker’s own personal relationship to the people, places, and images that he captures.

Brazilian auteur Kleber Mendonça Filho (“Bacurau”) is set to direct “The Secret Agent,” a gripping political thriller headlined by “Civil War” star Wagner Moura. The film is set in the late 1970s during the final years of Brazil’s military dictatorship.
MK2 Films, the sales banner behind the Oscar-winning “Anatomy of a Fall,” will introduce the project to buyers at the Cannes Film Market. Now in pre-production, “The Secret Agent” is being produced by Brazil’s Cinemascopio and Mk Productions, whose credits include Oscar-nominated films such as Joachim Trier’s “The Worst Person in the World” and Pawel Pawlikowski’s “Cold War.”
Moura, who broke through internationally with his Golden Globe-nominated performance as Pablo Escobar in the Netflix series “Narcos,” will star as Marcelo, a university professor in his 40s who is on the run. He travels from São Paulo to the seaside city of Recife during Carnival week, hoping to reunite with his son.

Nothing gold can stay. So the saying goes and is thoughtfully illustrated in Kleber Mendonça Filho’s latest film Pictures of Ghosts. It’s a mosaic portrait of the director’s hometown of Recife through the lens of cinema that resonates with the sense of unease many presently feel about the state of film.
The city, which is also the capital of the Brazilian state of Pernambuco, has a rich history of cinema that will come as a surprise to many. Filho unearths its cinematic past through archival footage blended with his own material presenting an evocative and personal account. He revives its halcyon days as a South American hub for Hollywood studios that erected glorious movie palaces and ushers us through its decay; which provided enough fertile ground for him to blossom into a filmmaker. His films––such as Aquarius, Neighboring Sounds, and Bacurau––are usually set so close...

Kleber Mendonça Filho followed his epic Bacurau with a lower-key reflection on his personal cinematic life. A hit at last year’s Cannes Film Festival, Pictures of Ghosts distills a lifetime of the Brazilian’s cinephilia through archival documentary, mystery, film clips, and personal memories to bring back to life downtown Recife’s classic movie palaces from the 20th century, many of which are mostly gone. Ahead of Grasshopper Film’s January 26 release, there’s a new trailer.
As David Katz said in his review, “If the death of cinema is imminent, at least Kleber Mendonça Filho can play it out with some vintage Tropicália. It’s becoming a nice leitmotif of the Brazilian director’s career, whose ultraviolent Bacurau curtain-raised with Gal Costa’s ‘Não Identificado,’ and latest effort Pictures of Ghosts, which premiered as a Special Screening at Cannes, eases in with Tom Zé’s deceptively jaunty ‘Happy End.

Kleber Mendonça Filho offers a poetic but somewhat unfocused memoir-essay about place, cinema and time
Home is clearly where the art is for Bacurau director Kleber Mendonça Filho, whose childhood apartment is the locus of the first part of this poetic but somewhat bemused memoir-essay about place, cinema and time. Twice renovated by his historian mother, the apartment was the site of his first early imaginative forays behind the camera, and appeared in his first two features, Neighbouring Sounds from 2012 and, four years later, Aquarius. Mendonça’s native city of Recife has also been subject to similar remodellings, as shown in the second and third parts here, through the decline of its cinema houses. As they fall into dereliction, it feels like a form of collective dementia, robbing its citizens of a shared cultural continuity.
In Neighbouring Sounds, Mendonça has an almost diagrammatic way of shooting his street and continues in the same vein here.

Pictures Of Ghosts director Kleber Mendonça Filho with Anne-Katrin Titze on the impact of Agnès Varda’s Along The Coast, Manoel de Oliveira’s The Porto Of My Childhood, and Martin Scorsese’s Italianamerican: “It happens in every film. Sometimes just an imaginary friend comes along to help you.”
The first time I spoke with Kleber Mendonça Filho was when I was introduced to him and producer Emilie Lesclaux by Jytte Jensen at the Museum of Modern Art in 2012 after he presented Neighbouring Sounds (O Som Ao Redor) during New Directors/New Films. If you went to Cinema São Luiz today, instead of finding the most celebrated theater in Recife (the capital of Brazil’s state of Pernambuco), you would find closed doors and a now-iconic sign that reads, “We’ll see each other again soon.” Because of the pandemic and a seemingly endless renovation job on the government’s part, this hallowed ground has been sealed for all but three months since March 2020.
For locals such as myself, that’s partly why seeing it through the lens of Kleber Mendonça Filho’s incredibly personal new documentary “Pictures of Ghosts” feels so poignant. Through a mix of archival footage and new recordings, “Pictures of Ghosts” sees its director — whose filmography is already rich with deep, complex portraits of his hometown, such as “Neighboring Sounds” and “Aquarius” — revisiting the places that made him. Recife’s movie theaters are chief among them.

“I love downtown Recife,” narrates Kleber Mendonça Filho over self-shot footage of his hometown’s dilapidated center, its once-promising clusters of midcentury high-rises now graying and under-occupied. He admits that he considered cutting that line from his voiceover, deeming it redundant, before letting it stand: “You should say when you like someone.” In “Pictures of Ghosts,” a stirring, idiosyncratic ode to the city — and cinemas — that raised him, the Brazilian filmmaker duly wears his heart on his sleeve, raking through the domestic and public spaces that made him the artist he is today, and making his affection and gratitude for them known. In so doing, he remembers the larger communities sustained and abandoned by an evolving national cinema culture, making for a documentary that feels acutely, even eccentrically, personal, but never navel-gazing.

If the death of cinema is imminent, at least Kleber Mendonça Filho can play it out with some vintage Tropicália. It’s becoming a nice leitmotif of the Brazilian director’s career, whose ultraviolent Bacurau curtain-raised with Gal Costa’s “Não Identificado,” and latest effort Pictures of Ghosts, which premiered as a Special Screening at Cannes, eases in with Tom Zé’s deceptively jaunty “Happy End.” This is a first-person, arguably selfish movie––in that associated genre, the docu-essay––where Mendonça Filho seems to be waving a teary-eyed goodbye to valuable associations and possessions, perhaps only those of individual sentimental resonance. Yet it’s “selfish” in a productive manner, almost as a function of self-care, like a sunny afternoon lounging on the settee revisiting one’s favorite LPs.
The title Pictures of Ghosts has been oddly overlapping in my mind with British theorist Mark Fisher’s posthumous hit essay collection Ghosts of My Life.

Job security in the film industry is never a sure thing. In this moment, it might look particularly fragile if you work in a vulnerable department of Netflix or a redundant division of Warner Bros. To that list, you could also add film festival programmers — and they should have some of the most secure jobs in the industry.
Consider how Netflix stock hits a new low each day in part to an overreliance on algorithms and too much content that not enough people watch. The overwhelming amount of global content production has forced even the biggest streamers to realize that curatorial decisions matter more than pure data, which means the skillsets of a programmer — and it is a skill — should be at their highest demand. This is particularly true for film festivals, which are defined by curation.

Brazil’s beleaguered film industry is getting some vital help from a new partnership between the Hubert Bals Fund (Hbf) and Brazilian non-profit Projeto Paradiso, the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) has announced.
The new alliance, designed to bolster the position of Brazilian filmmakers in the international film circuit, introduces an annual fellowship of €10,000 euros for the Hbf Script and Project Development program.
Projeto Paradiso (Project Paradise) is an initiative of the Olga Rabinovich Institute, a Brazilian philanthropic foundation that aims to support local filmmaking talent and bring greater visibility to their films.
New funding initiative is a much-needed boost given the paralyzed support for cinema in Brazil. Film-tv state agency Ancine’s robust central state fund (Fsa) has been frozen for nearly two years since populist president Jair Bolsonaro took office in January 2019.

Bacurau, the third feature from Kleber Mendonca Filho, co-directed by Juliano Dornelles (who served as production designer on Filho’s Neighboring Sounds in 2012 and on 2016’s Aquarius), premiered in competition at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival and picked up the Jury Prize. Kino Lorber edged it into theaters at the beginning of March 2020 and resumed streaming online when theaters closed down.
From our review at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival:

We recently signed up to Mubi, which has a daily updated set of 20, usually pretty interesting, films, and I like that it shrinks the otherwise terrifying range of possibilities. Over the last week or two I’ve seen Primer, Shane Carruth’s rather brilliant debut, made for $7,000. It’s a sort of naturalistic sci-fi, brilliantly conceived and made with such an unfussy, assured tone.
We watched a couple of Joseph Losey films – I thought I might warm to him more but haven’t. I liked the Brazilian film Bacurau a lot. Kleber Filho’s other film, Neighbouring Sounds, is good too.

The 2020 release calendar hit a snag with the coronavirus outbreak, but not before a number of cinematic highlights made their way to U.S. screens. IndieWire spent much of 2019 reviewing films on the festival circuit prior to their release dates, and some of them finally made it to theaters this year. Others simply materialized over the last few months, and we’re all the better for having them.
Our running list of the best movies of 2020 so far only includes movies that have received a U.S. theatrical release or have become available on VOD platforms accessible in North America. Films that received a B+ or higher qualify for the list. We’ll keep it updated as the year continues. Check out brief excerpts below and links to the full review.

On one level, you could take Kleber Mendonca Filho and Juliano Dornelles’ “Bacurau” as a serious political work about the exploitation of rural communities, the callous indifference of government and the damaging role of America around the world.
Or you could forget about that stuff and take it as a garish, bloody shoot ‘em up, an exercise in the Western genre where the wild west is actually northeast Brazil and the rising body count tends to obliterate whatever thoughtful points the film’s co-directors may be making.
In fact, “Bacurau” is all of those things at once. It makes points about community and exploitation, and then it splatters those points with blood, sets them to blasting sci-fi music and dares you to remember what those points were in the first place. It’s disturbing and messy, a fever dream for a disturbing and messy time in Brazil. And occasionally, it’s a lot of fun,...

Let's consider what's been happening in Brazil before we talk about the batshit crazy movie that is Bacurau (from the makers of Neighboring Sounds and Aquarius - director Kleber Mendonça Filho and co-director/production designer Juliano Dornelles). In early 2018, Luiz Ignacio Lula de Silva, commonly known as Lula, a much loved labor leader and former two-term Brazilian president, was barred to run for president again because of trumped up corruption charges and sentenced to 12 years in prison in all likelihood by opposing conservative Social Liberal Party, led by foul mouthed, all out bigoted racist who ran on his presidential campaign of fear and hate (sounds familiar?). It was widely expected that Lula was going to win. But him being jailed, his Worker's party's nominee...

After picking up a Grand Jury Prize at Cannes after its May debut, Kleber Mendonça Filho and Juliano Dornelles’ wholly unclassifiable genre thriller went on to dominate the Brazilian box office with a $2.5 million take, good enough to place it over Hollywood offerings like “Us,” “Knives Out,” and “Bohemian Rhapsody.” Now, after screening at festivals like Tiff and Nyff, the film is finally gearing up for its U.S. release. Good luck slotting this one in a handy genre box.

The Toronto Film Festival today unveiled The Best Of The Decade: An Alternative View, a top ten movie list from the last decade. Tiff asked film curators, historians, and archivists from Canada and around the world to choose the best films of the 2010s — any length, genre, or format. Judging by the list, it’s fair to say that superhero movies weren’t front of mind.
Coming out on top of the arthouse list was…Lucrecia Martel’s 2017 festival favourite Zama, the dreamlike tale about a Spanish officer in Seventeenth century Asunción, Paraguay, awaiting his transfer to Buenos Aires. Plenty of great movies make the cut. Check it out below.
“Many of the films in the poll’s top 10 address the perilous era we have just lived through, with such prescient works as Film Socialisme, Neighboring Sounds, and Sieranevada predicting various types of ecological, political, and social calamity,” said Tiff Senior Programmer James Quandt.

The 2019 Cannes Film Festival ended in triumph for Brazil’s Kleber Mendonça Filho, who shared the festival’s Jury Prize with co-director Juliano Dornelles for their dystopian western “Bacurau.” (The film tied with French police thriller “Les Misérables.”)“Bacurau” follows a remote village fighting for survival against invasive forces; now, Mendonça Filho faces another surreal battle back home.
Two weeks before the festival, the Brazilian government announced a 30-day ultimatum for Mendonça Filho to return roughly $500,000 that it provided for this 2012 debut, “Neighboring Sounds.” According to multiple reports in the Brazilian press, the funding was meant to wholly finance the film. However, the government maintains that Mendonça Filho’s final budget was about 50% higher than the maximum allowed under the program.
The filmmaker has been appealing the decision in court ahead of the June 3 deadline. He characterized the government’s latest decree as an attempt to capitalize on his recent publicity at Cannes,...

In some respects, Kleber Mendonça Filho’s “Bacurau” can be seen as a logical continuation of the Brazilian critic-turned-auteur’s two previous features. Much like 2012’s revelatory “Neighboring Sounds,” for example, “Bacurau” is a patient and sprawling portrait of a Brazilian community as it struggles to defend itself against the dark specter of modernity. And much like 2016’s unshakeable “Aquarius,” “Bacurau” hinges on an immovably stubborn woman who refuses to relinquish her place in the world — who won’t allow our blind lust for the future to bury her meaningful ties to the past.
In some respects, however, “Bacurau” marks something of a departure for its director (who shares his credit here with Juliano Dornelles). Whereas “Neighboring Sounds” relies on acoustics to weaponize the 21st century against its characters, this film opts for actual weapons. And while “Aquarius” is a grounded character study about a retired journalist who refuses to...

A bloody Brazilian riff on “The Most Dangerous Game,” the sinews of which are girded with so many allusions to local culture and politics, “Bacurau” is that rare movie that probably would have been better if it had been dumber, or at least less ambitious. Set in the sertão — or inland outback that occupies the country’s northeast corner — “Bacurau” slowly builds to the standoff between the residents of a matriarchal village and a group of wealthy American visitors, led by Udo Kier, who’ve arranged to hunt them for sport. These white outsiders see themselves as superior, but with the help of a psychotropic drug found in the desert, the people put up more of a fight than these sickos expected.

If the name Kleber Mendonca Filho isn’t already on your radar, it’s only a matter of time before it is. One of the most exciting directors working in Brazil at the moment, he first made waves with his terrific feature debut “Neighboring Sounds” in 2012. From there, he leapt straight into Competition status at Cannes with the exceptionally well received “Aquarius” in 2016. Now he’s back, reteaming with “Aquarius” star Sonia Braga, and co-directing with Juliano Dornelles, with “Bacarau.” And it looks like this one will light up the Croisette.

Sônia Braga is outstanding as a woman refusing to be forced out of her Recife apartment in this powerful Brazilian satire
A performance of tremendous wit, vitality and lusty defiance by Sônia Braga drives Brazilian film-maker Kleber Mendonça Filho’s remarkable second feature. A portrait of a 65-year-old woman refusing to be bullied out of her seafront apartment by developers, Aquarius is both a powerful celebration of its independent heroine and a scathing satire on institutional corruption. Like the writer/director’s fable-inflected 2004 short Vinil Verde, it is a film fascinated by the magical power of scratchy old records, of mother-daughter bonds, of transformational living spaces. And as with his first feature, Neighbouring Sounds, it presents a community haunted by artefacts of the past and the architecture of change, social and personal conflicts seamlessly intertwined.
Retired music critic Clara (Braga) lives in the 1940s-built Aquarius apartment block in upmarket Recife.
