Well, at least the movie tried, although it didn't really impress on any accounts. And if you have seen "The Craft" from 1996, then you essentially also have already seen "Alpha Girls"

The story told in "Alpha Girls" is about a mysterious coven of practitioners of black magic who reside on a college campus ground, where their secret is kept tugged away. But when a group of pledges go too far and call upon the Lord of Darkness, infernal gates are swung wide open and the promise of power, lure of wealth and social acceptance proves to be the invitation to a road of witchcraft, mortal danger and betrayal.

Storywise, then "Alpha Girls" didn't really bring anything new to the horror genre, and there weren't really any overly impressive scenes throughout the entire movie. For a movie set within the black magic horror genre, then "Alpha Girls" failed to stand out.

The acting was wooden and forced in most cased, although a few people did manage to pull off their performances well enough. Although this was far from enough to salvage the rest of the movie.

For a movie running for 90 minutes, then surprisingly little happened, and as such, it became a bore and a drag to sit through the entire movie - especially when having seen the 1996 movie "The Craft" already; a movie which far outshines "Alpha Girls". And that is quite some statement, because "The Craft" wasn't even all that great to begin with.

All throughout the movie, there is an ever constant presence of a sensation which leads you to wonder 'what was the purpose of this movie?' And when you thought things couldn't possible sink any lower, enter Ron Jeremy as a priest in a confessional booth. Are you kidding? That was just the straw which caused the entire movie to go from bad to worse.

"Alpha Girls" is a fairly boring and slow-paced horror movie, which tries to incorporate elements from various genres into a mix that ultimately didn't work out well.

Watched, bagged and tagged, this movie receives a 3 out of 10 stars rating from me, and even so, I feel rather generous. Once this movie has been watched, I guarantee you that you will not be making a second trip back to this movie.

See this movie for Kara Zhang's acting, however little of her you get to see.

It's finally out! Alpha Girls! The indie horror film from Philadelphia! I finally got to see it, thus proving the movie really exists! Alpha Girls follows Morgan (Falon Joslyn), a transfer student at a Philadelphia university rushing for the Alpha Beta sorority. Alpha Beta alumni are known to go onto become some of the most influential people. However, Morgan soon finds out that this power comes at a sinister price.

And of course, the viewer finds out even sooner than Morgan did. The movie opened with a human sacrifice scene that occurred in 1896. The scene more or less destroyed any and all chance at subtlety to the movie and eliminated any possibility of a surprise. Since Alpha Girls released ample pre-release material, such as production photos, I kind of knew how the movie was going to play out, but I didn't know it would be spelled out as such right at the beginning.

When Morgan arrives, she meets fellow pledges Cassidy (Beverly Rivera), April (Kara Zhang), and Juliet (Nicole Cinaglia). No sooner does she move in that the pledges are put through a rush regimen taken right out of Full Metal Jacket, complete with Gunnery Sergeant Hartman-wannabe President Veronica (Nikki Bell). Of course, things suddenly start to improve when Cassidy performed a satanic ritual that involved eating fish a la A Fish Called Wanda and jamming an ax into Veronica's chest, granting the pledges' wishes, such as improving April's grades or Juliet's financial situation.

It's clear the writers were film buffs as Alpha Girls came jam packed with movie references, including an, "I find your lack of faith disturbing." Other than that, I really wished they had someone look at their script before they went shooting as the story's structure was an issue and much of the dialogue sounded stiff and unnatural.

For the most part, the acting talent didn't do much to help. The sacrificial victim at the beginning of the movie was supposed to be crying, but she looked like she was laughing to me. I'm seriously impressed Beverly Rivera was able to say her lines with a straight face. IMDb users describe her as being creepy, but I honestly wanted to laugh when I saw her.

Falon Joslyn gave a passable performance, but I was blown away by Kara Zhang's and Ron Jeremy's performances. Did I mention neither Zhang nor Jeremy got significant time on screen? The extra they hired to play a cashier at a mini-mart was probably a real cashier, but he couldn't even deliver those lines right.

That said, Alpha Girls is a movie you need to see as a B-movie if you were to have any hope of enjoying it. I am aware this is a freshman effort on the parts of writer/directors Johnny Zito and Tony Trov. However, even Quentin Tarantino (who by the way won an Oscar for Django Unchained) is comfortable admitting he runs his script by people to check if the dialogue sounded good.

The pacing was also quite uneven. The aforementioned sacrifice scene and the sort of "girls day out" where the pledges are out and about in Philadelphia were both scenes that could've been cut with no consequence to the story. I actually felt like many scenes were actually in the movie purely to pad its length, like when Morgan was in the arcade with JD (Victor Gennaro). That whole sequence just felt like it dragged on for far longer than it should have.

Considering the obvious budgetary constraints though, I was actually impressed with the movie's technical competence. The special effects actually looked surprisingly good, and the cinematography (barring some minor bugs in editing) actually was decent. The blood wasn't exactly on par with Saving Private Ryan in terms of realism, but there was a lot of it, nearing the level of that of Saw 7.

Overall, this is a movie that I would recommend if you felt like watching an episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000, except you didn't want to watch Mystery Science Theater 3000. Get some beer and some friends, and have fun ripping the movie to shreds! Again, it's a B-movie that was kind of gross, but never remotely truly scary. Poor Kara got washed out in a flood of bad dialogue and acting.

ALPHA GIRLS: A SATANIC SORORITY SLASHER is a quite dreadful indie horror film. The title and subtitle tell you everything you need to know about this movie, which is long-winded and very silly from beginning to end. It's merely an excuse for the camera to ogle teenage girls while throwing in some very lame horror content now and then. The film is very cheaply made with lots of over the top dialogue and attempts at witty repartee that fail. It's all about bitchiness whereas the horror is virtually non-existent. Ron Jeremy has a campy cameo as a priest (!).

Good enough to work as a viable low-budget horror flick fix ◆≈≈5/10≈≈◆

Alpha Girls is the bloody good film debut driven forth from the depths of hell by way of Johnny Zito and Tony Trov, who each played an equal part in the film's production, writing and direction. A horror film from the bloody beginning where viewers are treated to a satanic ritual from the year 1896, the time of the Sorority's dark origination. A scene any horror hound will undoubtedly appreciate, serving up a nice dose of blood and skin. The film of course is of low budget and at times even uses it to advantage, ripe with moments of camp and twisted humor.

The opening scene aside, the film begins in present day, introducing the newest Alpha pledge hottie Morgan (Falon Joslyn) as she becomes acquainted with the snooty house members and the chapter's house mother Ms. Grace (Victoria Guthrie) . Morgan soon butts heads with Veronica (Nikki Bell) the house president and is sent to join the other three young pledges in their tortuous pledge hazing. While first being at odds with one another, the pledges soon find solace in each other by plotting against their house tormentors. It's then that pledge Cassidy (Beverly Rivera) uses her gypsy background to perform a ritual between pledges where each is to receive the one thing they most want in life, but what is received does not always come without a cost. Cassidy has tapped into something much more powerful than her own manifestations, something that is deeply rooted into the cultish history of the house. All hell soon breaks loose, sisters begin to die, it seems no one is safe from the evil power awakened from within the Alpha-Beta house.

The film, despite it's novice creators and restrictive budget, manages to pull off some pretty entertaining scenes continuing throughout the runtime. It's full of beautiful women that fulfill their parts without anything cringe-worthy and that's a lot to be said for this type of film. The effects were minimal, scenes of blood mostly with little actual gore, not lacking but not overkill. They even throw in Ron Jeremy for a cameo as a confessional priest, although I was hoping for a glory hole gag that didn't happen, oh well. Overall, this film accomplishes what it intended, it was a decent B-horror flick with some good entertainment value.

A Decent Low Budget Horror Comedy Fun Film

alpha girls 2013 is a comedy horror film it surprises on many levels then much bigger production films that Hollywood churns out this low budget film is a proof that you don't need loads of money to tell a good story.

there is a documentary from history channel that runs through the credits scene that tells alpha girls is a secret society and it created a controversy and a lot of famous people were involved into it,i didn't knew this until i saw this film whatever witchcraft stories or this documentary or any other thing is separate from this films story.

the plot:the girls who live in sorority house takes revenge on veronica for what shes doing to them as Cassidy becomes possessed and worships dark demons to fulfill her desires and leaving others to face severe consequences.

the cast:Falon Joslyn & Beverly Rivera are two hot girls that got me hooked until the end with there good acting skills and sexy looks.

this film gives messages about God,faith,religion and devil worshipers who do wrong stuff but its not to be taken that seriously i did enjoyed it for what it was it includes gore,suspense and some funny comedy.

overall my rating for Alpha Girls 2013 is 5/10 its a film worth watching at least once just keep expectations below.its recommended

NO PAIN NO GAIN

The Alpha House performs satanic rituals with human sacrifices. Four new pledges find the spell book and turn the tables on their sorority sisters. The film turned too serious when it should have gone for the dark lord comedy laugh. It looks and sounds much better than what it was. Ron Jeremy plays a priest, maybe for shock value attempt.

Parental Guide: F-bombs. Brief near sex. Opening nude scene.

Mean, fun and worth a watch!

I was lucky enough to catch this movie and Southwork, the band who scored the film, last night as it played in Knoxville.

A lot of other reviewers note the campiness of the movie, but I didn't see what they did. Maybe I'm missing the point, but I think of the Adam West Batman series, Rocky Horror or even Return of the Living Dead when I think "campy" and I just didn't see that here. Don't take that to mean this is a movie that has no sense of humor, it does, but it also has one hell of a mean streak. That isn't a bad thing.

Alpha Girls looks a lot bigger than a lot of movies with much larger budgets. Decent sets, costumes and some of the effects helped achieve that bigger feel. Intentional or not, the movie does have a bit of an 80's throwback feel and I'm OK with that either way. The acting is a little hit or miss, but is fine overall. Other than a "girls day out" scene that feels a little long, the movie is well paced. My biggest gripe would be some of the digital effects used feel less like a part of the scene and have a "pasted on" type of look.

Overall, I had a good time watching this and would encourage anyone that enjoys a little satanism with their sorority girls or fun horror movies in general to check this out if the tour hits your town.

Seeing what can be achieved with so little is promising for low budget films in general, but I look forward to seeing what these guys do next.

Sorority Babes in the Witchouse Pledge-0-rama!

I had only heard about this film playing the local art-house just the night before and wanted to check it out if for no other reason than to see what I expected to be a fun nod to the 80's in town that (finally) wasn't some formulaic slasher-kill-teenagers flick with yet another obligatory cameo by Tony Todd, Robert Englund, or Kane Hodder (much as I respect those actors). My assumption going in was that it would likely be a low budget film hiring strippers to "act" and would most likely be cheesy, but fun. What I got in return made me feel like an asshole for even thinking this.

Alpha Girls was one of the funnest lower-budget films I have seen in ages and was more finely executed than any time I've ever seen someone try to make a horror film with familiar themes. The actresses were all great, the story-telling very solid, the directing top-notch, and the editing very stylish! Even when it comes time to make a nod at the cheesiness we all love about 80's horror, there is absolutely nothing amateurish about this film, even more impressive given its budget and shooting-time limitations! What really impressed me most, I think were how well the characters came off in the film, and while perhaps no one's going for an academy award here, you definitely don't want to see the cast killed off from the beginning--there was nothing stupid about any of these characters or performances, I would say. With touches of the Craft, Night of the Demons, and Sorority House Massacre, if you're looking for something fun an entertaining to check out, this is a fine way to spend 90 minutes!

Light-hearted sorority flick evoking all the tropes with tongue-in-cheek

This is a fun, light-hearted movie which plays to every cliché and expectation of the genre. Somewhat predictable it does play a nice twist on the viewers' first impressions and doesn't waste time.

The acting is reasonable from a largely unknown cast, which is gratifying. Some good laughs, stolen quotes and hammed moments all add to the charm. It'd be easy to feel disappointed if you didn't realise that this is deliberately playing up to your low expectations.

Of particular note is the presentation of the supernatural which is interesting. On the surface you'd be forgiven for just seeing it as clichéd, but there is a definite sense that the writers understand classic mythical sensibilities about the cost of power versus justice.

Loved the props, costumes, cast and tone of B-movie homage. Nice one!

Campy horror done in the best way

I'm not really big horror movie fan but anyways I though I'd write a review and support local Philly film.

Basically "Alpha Girls" is the quintessential campy horror film you never thought you'd see, but if "campy" is supposed to be a derogatory term, it certainly ain't a bad thing in this case. I think that if you can stand a lil' gore and you like watching chicks battle it out, Greek style, you will really enjoy this film. Unlike most horror films, which involves guys, this film has only one guy character - the rest are all girls.

Now I ain't a feminist or anything like that but I think that this shows a good step forward for women in films. I'm a guy but I really enjoyed this film. It's clichéd, campy, and done before but it's never been done like this. I say y'all gotta catch a screening when it comes to your city or when it comes out on DVD or Netflix or whatever else they got these days.

I saw this film at a screening in Nashville and had a great night. Tony Trov and Johnny Zito are two outstanding filmmakers with a great future in independent films. I am very impressed what they can do with such a low budget, it didn't seem to effect the film at all. I'm starting to wonder why Hollywood films need muti-million dollar budgets, when these guys can make this film for so low.

Alpha Girls was a great genre horror film. If you love attractive women, extreme gore, satanic cults, attractive women, and an overall exciting and thrilling film then you will have blast watching Alpha Girls!

Sorority Slasher Surprise

I caught this flick as part of a midnight marathon in Nashville. It's a great horror film that keeps the audience guessing and builds to an epic conclusion.

Alpha Girls really reminded me of movies like Carrie because much of the horror endured by the protagonists comes from within their social circle. There are the required number of blood and booby shots; but the sorority hazing made my skin crawl the most.

The performance by Nikki Bell as the sorority president is particularly memorable. Her cupie doll features betray the filth that spews out of her mouth. She has some of the nastiest lines and she delivers them with real hatred. I hated myself for loving her so much.

Ron Jeremy as a priest was fun but not the first time I've seen it done. Although, here it's not played for laughs. While I couldn't help smirking, I appreciated that the filmmakers didn't wink at the camera or anything so goofy. Instead, the story kept rolling and I was immediately re-immersed in the plot.

If you have a chance, I highly recommend Alpha Girls for fans of 80's slasher movies and indie horror films.

A fun and nostalgic time

Alpha Girls is A fun and nostalgic time hearkening back to the cult films of the 70's and 80's with influences spanning from Francis Ford Coppola to Dario Argento. What is abundantly clear is knowledge that this creative team has for the art of film making. For a film that was shot on such a small budget the production has a unique and defined look and feel. Shooting on the Red One and the HD-DSLR cameras gave this film a extensive visual range from up close and intimate to sweeping shots of the city of Philadelphia.

The story starts off with introducing the germ of an idea and fallows it unto completion.

Go see it.

Satanic campy horror like your mom used to make.

This movie followed the great recipe for a horror film. It has blood, guts, pretty girls and evil spirits. It also has just a hint of humor that works well and should be used in more horror films. There's a little influence from Suspiria, The Craft and the under appreciated Satan's Cheerleader's. It's not overly gory and the amount of visual effects are just right. It is very much like classic horror from the 70s and 80s and is sure to please anyone feeling nostalgic for that era. Kara Zhang and Falon Joslyn gave great performances. The cinematography is very nice and you get to see a lot of Philadelphia that you don't normally get to. The music was also very good and worked well within the context of the movie. It's a really great independent horror film.

A Lot of Fun

Alpha Girls is a fun throwback flick that dishes out a good time on a Saturday night. I prefer to use "cheeky" rather than "campy" to describe the horror film's undertones. It has a fun mix of 'The Craft' Meets 'Mean Girls' that really works in the movie's favor. All of the actresses put 100% into their performances and bring individual life to their characters. Zito and Trov have designed a movie that nods to everything from 'The Amityville Horror' to 'Revenge of the Nerds' and it works. When used, the special make-up effects are successful and throw a nice amount of gore onto some pretty pictures.

Definitely fun with a group of people. Don't miss this one.

Awesome indie horror!

Saw this movie at a screening in Chicago. Very impressed! I'm a horror movie fan and really like supporting independent efforts.

A group of sorority girls try to make their dreams come true by pledging their allegiance to dark forces. That almost never works but you're treated to the mayhem that follows. The special effects were way better than I had imagined they would be. The acting is actually really good for the most part - especially Beverly Rivera, she rocks! Throw in Ron Jeremy, Schoolly D and a twist or two that you probably don't see coming and you've got a pretty awesome horror flick. Would definitely recommend this flick so if its coming to/near your city, you should check it out.

Fun jaunt for such a low budget

well as mentioned, the budget must have been less than an average weeks wages for most movie actors, but a well written and fun ride through the evil underworld.

it starts with the new members for Alpha house, an elite girls sorority in an unnamed university. The girls dabble with a little dark magic they find in the sorority house book, as they descend into evil, most of the girls want out, but not all of them fear what may come.

The acting is very good from the main cast, although I hope they shop assistant didn't get paid for his err contribution, lol. Few CGI graphics in this film, but done well when used. the plot is a little cheesy, but the film doesn't seem to take itself too seriously, so you don't mind it.

If you are looking for a serious horror to scare your pants of, this isn't it, but if you want some light b-grade entertainment, then this is definitely worth a watch.

Alpha Girls: Campy, Horror Fun!

Alpha Girls is a campy, sorority horror flick directed by Comic Book writers Tony Trov and Johnny Zito.

As one who is not usually a fan of horror, I found this film to be very entertaining. I liken it to the flicks of the 90's "The Craft," "I Know What You Did Last Summer," "Scream," etc. If you like those movies, you'll love Alpha Girls! It doesn't take itself too seriously, looks awesome and has a super fun storyline.

Beverly Rivera is especially terrifying as college gypsy, Cassidy.

As an indie shot in Philly, it's cool to see some of the historic and most notable sites of the city in the movie. It's got great music, awesome gore and special effects, and a healthy dosage of sexy ladies messing with the dark arts!

I laughed and I hid my eyes!

Campy Bloody Sorrority Girls (spoiler)

Sort of a low budget Jon Waters sorority girl slasher based in Philadelphia. The movie seems to be self aware of it's campiness. That being a good or bad thing is up to the viewer. The girls are funny and the dude is a douche. The blonde is a bitch and the pledges kill her. Tie in some Evil Dead voodoo, a mind control battle and zombie sorority girls, it's pretty much what you'd expect from a movie like this. Lots of references to other horror films. The Ron Jeremy bit is definitely a highlight of the movie but it's an oddly serious scene. The boobies in the beginning of the film were awesome. Schoolly D the rapper is in the film but doesn't rap. Which is weird. I give it 8 Stars.

Babes, bullies and blood

"The film harks back to the days of those great 80′s Sorority Slashers for example House on Sorority Row or Slumber Party Massacre, and also had a distinct air of the Frat Boy shocker Pledge Night. It has been a long while since we have seen anything like this in the horror world with the sheer amount of found footage, paranormal activity 501, and zombie flicks that seem to dominate our screens in this current climate, so it came as a much welcome relief to see a modern spin being put on an old theme. Being a Brit this strange American custom of Sorority/Fraternity pledging has always been a bit of a fascination to me I cannot think of anything we have over here that compares, apart from Freemasonry, but then who knows what goes on in their little secret meetings. Although the likeness to the aforementioned films is more of an element, or flavor so to speak, as Alpha Girls is not just your everyday common garden slasher, bringing elements of Satanism and Witchery to the mix too. I have to admit I have a massive soft spot for witchcraft/ satanic rituals in horror, so another win for Alpha Girls. The last comparisons I want to make are that firstly it did remind me in essence of Andrew Fleming's cult teen flick The Craft, albeit in a more grown up and violent way, but the same messages were there. It also had the black comedic aspect of Heathers, and the vain and self- absorbed personas of the lead sorority girls were very reminiscent of the characters in Michael Lehmann's 1988 classic."

I caught this film at a screening in Philadelphia at the legendary Trocadero theater. The place was packed to the ceiling and I would suggest seeing this film with a crowd. To call it fun might sound a bit too simple, but there are so many dull, dreary horror offerings being put out by Hollywood that it is refreshing to a film with this tone, especially from an independent source.

Alpha Girls is a throwback of sorts to the B cinema of the 1970s, but with a conscience of the self referential films of the 80s and 90s (not limited to the horror genre). This film would be right at home as double feature with the 1980s dark comedy Heathers. And this is what the film is, a perfect dark comedy/horror comedy. It has the right balance of scares and laughs that again fit nicely with such greats as Night of the Creeps, Monster Squad, or even An American Werewolf in London. The acting was well done, especially within the genre, and Ron Jeremy's cameo was a bit of brilliance that I'm surprised hasn't garnered more mainstream attention.

cheap movie delivers sorority horror

This a beautifully made movie and it was shot for an absurdly tiny sum. I met the creators while Alpha Girls was on tour. They are indie bros with a good sense of humor. I originally heard about them during through kickstarter where they raised most of the budget.

If you don't like horror shlock I wouldn't recommend Alpha Girls. But if you do like b movies and the color pink I think you might enjoy it.

I wish the badguy boyfriend died sooner. He sucked. The rest of the cast is mostly enjoyable. I liked Ron Jeremy, the demon, the boobs and sorority president. In that order.

There's a fake documentary at the end of the movie that should really be at the beginning of the movie but it was my favorite part anyway.

A sorority girls movie shot in Philadelphia, about Philadelphia. To quote Kevin Gallagher it is like "Heathers Meets the Craft". It Contains some comedic relief via the main female characters' banter. For a low budget feature, it does a great job of keeping you interested. As other reviewers have already written it is a campy horror movie. The directors new what they wanted, and were able to execute a plan for making an entertaining movie that does not take itself to seriously. The makeup effects, lighting, and special effects were great.

A Solid Throwback to 80s Horror!

How good is this indie horror film from Philadelphia Filmmakers Tony Trov and Johnny Zito? Well it's the only movie in 2012 that I paid to see twice! (I was lucky enough to catch it when it had a limited run in my city.)

Alpha Girls tells the story of a sorority that's been harboring a dark past of satanism and the occult dating back to the 1800s. Standout Performances from "The Alpha Girls" themselves (Falon Joslyn, Beverly Rivera, Nicole Cinaglia, Kara Zhang, & Nikki Bell), gory practical effects and a killer soundtrack from Mike Vivas of Southwork makes this one movie you won't want to miss when it get's a wider release in 2013!

Stuck Up Sorority Witches

Summary Spoilers... Nothing major.

The Alpha Girls were super powerful witches once upon a time. Now they're all just spoiled rich girls with no idea of their legacy. Along comes Cassady, a new pledge, with a deeper understanding of the dark arts. After she gets her hands on a magical book full of the devil's words, all hell breaks loose.

The cast was beautiful and my favorite scenes are the times all four main characters get to interact. The girls have very distinctive personalities and we get some time with each. So, when people start dying I really cared about them. My understanding is that this movie was made for no money. Regardless, the gore is great, totally sick and bloody. What little budget there was must have been spent on the final 15 minute climax, replete with digital effects. In general I applaud little flourishes in the art and wardrobe that made Alpha Girls feel huge.
