The best episode of this season by a mile!
wazza_2522 April 2013
Warning: Spoilers
The episode starts where the last one ended, Jaime Lannister. If anyone felt bad for Jamie when the captors toyed with him, think of Bran and remind yourself he deserves it. I liked how Brienne's question was left unanswered just to build some curiosity. Maybe Jaime has a good side after all.

The Varys/Tyrion segment was a bit average compared to the other ones in this episode. Tyrion may well teach Cersei payback is a bitch.

Olynna Tyrell! Loved her acting. Finally someone to put Cersei in her place. Can't wait to see what the Tyrell's will do once Margaery becomes queen.

Tywin Lannister has to be one of the best characters in the show. Menacing, Arrogant, someone who raises his words and not his voice. I loved the line where he reminds Cersei how dumb she is (Obvious, but still).

Meanwhile at Craster's keep, some of the rangers lose it as they starve to death while Craster boasts about having 99 sons! I wish they hadn't killed Lord Commander Mormont, especially while a wild ling attack is on the horizon.

The Brotherhood without Banners have a secret hideout and are led by Beric Dondarrion. While the Hound denies killing any children, Arya sells him out. Personally i liked the Hound, he just did what was asked for and nothing more. I was hoping to see him fight alongside the Brotherhood.

The best part was saved for the last. Daenarys Stomborn - WOW. Amazing set up, stunning visual effects. Epic soundtrack, watching her speak Valyrian was just too good. The ending was a bit predictable but nothing like how you imagined it in your head.

The worst part of the episode was......it had to end!!

Perfection. To define it in one word. 10/10

Daenerys gets her army
Tweekums1 January 2016
Warning: Spoilers
After the shocking end to the previous episode, where Jaime Lannister lost his sword hand we see him as a much weaker man; there is no more banter; he knows that his fate is entirely in the hands of his captors; Brienne tries to encourage him but he doesn't appear to be listening. Things aren't going well for Theon either; his rescuer tells him that he is going to be taken to his sister when in fact he is taking him back to his cell and further torture; his escape was nothing more than a cruel ploy to give him hope before taking it away. Back in King's Landing Tyrion visits Lord Varys to ask if his sister is still trying to kill him and hears the story of what happened to Varys when he was younger. Later Varys schemes with Olenna Tyrell to ensure that Lord Baelish doesn't get Sansa Stark. North of the wall tensions rise at Craster's camp to the point that members of the Night's Watch turn on him and each other. Across the Narrow Sea Daenerys buys her Army of the Unsullied… and their previous owner gets quite a surprise!

This episode was great even by the high standards of this series. It started well, if somewhat downbeat, with Jaime's humiliation at the hands of his captors then got increasingly better. Lord Varys's story was somewhat disturbing but one couldn't help smile when we learn of his ongoing revenge against the man responsible for his suffering as a child. The events that take place in Craster's camp were sudden, violent and led to one surprising death… and another that was not so surprising. The highlight though was the purchase of the Unsullied… which came just as I was thinking we wouldn't be seeing Daenerys this episode. When she agreed to give up one of her dragons I feared that it would ultimately prove to be a mistake but it was hard not to cheer as Daenerys first showed that she understands Valyrian, so understood every insult directed at her, then orders the Unsullied to kill the slavers… just as their seller learns that dragons aren't something one can own. The acting was solid throughout; Emilia Clarke as Daenerys and Conleth Hill as Varys were particularly impressive. Overall a thrilling episode that, to use a cliché, is a real emotional roller-coaster.

Superb Action Filled Episode
Hitchcoc22 May 2015
How much can one squeeze in a fifty minute session. We have the freeing of Theon and his savior being something unexpected. Joffrey begins to be influenced by his bride to be. Tyrion is researching again, trying to find proof of his potential murderer. There is a mutiny. And, ultimately, we see Dany asserting her authority, working a system and playing on the idea of freedom. Meanwhile, Jaime has been abused to the nth degree. He has been forced to drink horse urine and shoved in the mud. But his companion brings back a possibility of dignity for him. It's interesting how those who were despicable can pull at our hearts when their adversaries prove even worse. Cersai is up to no good and tries to gain some modicum of respect. She will endure. We can see that.

Best Episode of the Season thus far!
mahsdlp26 April 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Fast paced, gripping, powerful episode. I was cheering and nearly brought to tears at once!.....

The scene with Lord Varys retelling his childhood and how it ended was freaking chilling.

For the first time.....i began to feel sorry for Jaime....but then i remembered how casually pushed Bran Stark outta the window.

The person i continue to feel sorry for is poor Theon..he cant catch a break! After being "rescued" he is led back to the torture room he by the same dude who rescued him?! What was that about.

Finally Daenerys Targaryen masterful tactical work at the end of the episode was..well...impressive to say the least. I knew she wouldn't give up her Dragons so easily.

Its going to be hard to keep up the pace and quality of future episodes me thinks!

Things are heating up!...

Warning: Spoilers
This series of Game of Thrones has continuously proved its status as the epitome of quality television. Whilst the majority of each instalment includes a variety of characters walking places, with the occasional sword fight thrown in, it is the visual flare, quality dialogue and top notch performances that captivate us audiences each week. Episode four remains very much the same as each character trope is once again developed that bit further. However, you know that recurring feeling of expectancy? Of a moment or event that such development is undoubtedly building toward? Well let's just say it has begun.

Across Westeros, Jaime and Brienne continue to be abused and tormented by their captors, Jaime more so through a variety of trickery (horse wee anyone?). You have to admire his gusto, however, for attempting to fight back even in his handless and famished state. Something worth greater admiration though, is the development in Jaime and Brienne's relationship, which has undoubtedly progressed into levels of compassion and care. One moment sees both characters sit by the fire and Jaime melodramatically declare he is ready for death. Brienne effectively tells him to 'man up' and eat something. He begrudgingly chews on a bread roll. It is a wonderful sequence and proves that in a time of peril they have become closer - a surprisingly touching motif.

Elsewhere, Theon is fooled by his 'rescuer'. Believing to be escorted back to his sister, he is instead taken straight back to where he was tortured – his father's castle. This roundabout journey provides a moment of discourse in which Theon shows remorse for his actions (primarily the murder of two orphans) and effectively admits a latent desire to be a true Stark boy, but disparagingly knows this will never be the case.

We briefly touch upon Arya and her journey with the Brotherhood without Banners. Herself and Gendry are taken to their secret cave and meet the leader, Beric Dondarrion. He accuses Hound (their captive) of being a murderer, but charges cannot effectively be proved so a sword fight to the death is settled upon.

The Nights Watch at Craster's Keep continue to moan and deploy bitterness at Craster, who has appointed them slaves and withdrawn any sense of hospitality. Just when you thought this act was beginning to get a bit tedious, members of the Nights Watch speak up and Craster is brutally murdered, in addition to the Nights Watch leader. It is a welcomed uprising and a refreshing portrayal of the Nights Watch who up until this point have not proved to be a particularly threatening group.

In King's Landing, Tyrion is keen to get to the bottom of his attempted assassination at the Blackwater battle. He seeks advice from Lord Varys, who in turn offers a personal parable describing his own tale of revenge, the conclusion of which alludes to a "good things come to those who wait" sentiment. Elsewhere, Lord Varys seeks council from Grandmother Tyrell regarding the plans of Littlefinger. Until this point, his actions have been subdued, his presence almost non-existent. However, for the first time in this episode, we get a sense of the trouble that may lie ahead. Littlefinger has proposed a plan to help Sansa Stark escape King's Landing. This, of course, is part of a greater and more selfish motive. If Robb Stark falls as King of the North, Sansa is next in line and this is something Littlefinger aims to be a part of. As voiced by Lord Varys, "He would see this country burn if he could be king of the ashes". This moment of discourse is particularly captivating primarily due to the quality dialogue and strong performances. Although brief, the sense of threat is effectively translated.

Margaery Tyrell is forever at her manipulating ways, feeding to Joffrey's ego (he exudes minimal douche-ness this week) and courting friendship with Sansa. Cersei confesses her disliking of such actions to her father, Tywin, but does not receive the response she had hoped for. Once again, Charles Dance manages to steal a sequence with quality deliverance, perfecting the role of harsh and neglecting father. Compared to previous weeks, however, King's Landing does not boast the episode's top scene or most brilliant moment. That trophy is most definitely awarded to Daenerys and her actions in Astapor.

Daenerys approaches Kraznys, dragon in tow, to partake in the agreed exchange. She hands over her dragon and in return, gets the golden whip providing mastery over the 8000 Unsullied. Once the deal is done, Daenerys tests her new powers in giving the first command to her newly purchased army. In doing so, she reveals she can in fact speak Valyrian. Whilst half expected, the impact of this twist was by no means less effective. In a pure moment of bad-assery, Daenerys commands her dragon to burn Kraznys and orders the Unsullied to kill every armed man in the castle. She instigates an Unsullied uprising. Proceeding this, she offers freedom to the Unsullied, declaring no one will be harmed if they wish to leave. Alternatively, she suggests they stay and fight for her but as free men. It is a risky move but one that ultimately pays off as each member of the Unsullied declare their commitment to their new leader. The episode thus ends on an epic scale (showcasing some top visual effects), as Daenerys marches off with three un-chained dragons and 8000 men in tow. You go girl.

This week's episode flew by, ever-proving the strength of the show's strong dialogue and performances - each small taster per narrative strand shines. The fragmented character trope approach each week is also completely understandable, as the ten minute pay-offs on a sheer epic scale, as we have now sampled, are thus all the more impactful and effective. Things are definitely beginning to heat up and that feeling of anticipation is now increasingly stronger.

Nerdgasm!!!
kannname22 April 2013
I must say I am a little bit biased towards this show. It is because I have read the books and I love them. Therefore in my fanboy-mindset I will praise this show too much. But in my honest opinion I believe that this genre not yet thoroughly explored is one of the most emotionally thrilling thing I have ever seen. This show may not be to everyone's taste but for those that know what they want it is the best thing that has happened to them. To those of us that have read the books this episode was one that many had been waiting to see how it 'll be executed and I must say I am thoroughly pleased. Never before have I been so excited as to scream at the screen ''EPIC EPIC EPIC'' and to have goosebumps!Combining superb acting skills that make you love some characters and completely despise others. This show is full of intricate schemes and epic moments that will take you on an emotional roller-coaster that you will never forget. And I must praise(kudos) the writers for executing it as well as it is written in the books. To cut things short I recommend watching this show! LET THE EPIC FLOW THROUGH YOU.

I highly recommend this show and rate it at 10/10.

So far, no TV series production can surpass GOT's
seb-chovi-man21 April 2013
Warning: Spoilers
God damn WHAT AN EXCELLENT EPISODE!!!

After last week's low point episode, THIS WAS THE WAY TO GO FOR THE SERIES. Every scene (perhaps except for Tyrion/Varys) was excellent!!

I make the exception for Tyrion/Varys scene because it started very well, Varys telling Tyrion his story of how he was castrated, but ended bad when Varys showed he already had captured the magician.... Not only did I didn't enjoy it because it is not in the books, but because it makes the scene, mainly Varys' dialogue, loose impact.

But every other scene was so good damn good!!! Dialogue-wise, the best scenes where Cersei/Tywin and Lady Olenna/Varys. One could really enjoy the acting, mostly Dianna Rigg's, but all the actors and actresses really know how to get into their characters.

Also, D.B. Weiss and D. Benioff where wise enough to give us a scene of almost every character.

But my highlight (and I think everybody's) was the episode finale, starting with Craster's Keep, ending in Astapor.

The development of the scene in Craster's Keep was spectacular, from the tense atmosphere to the catalystic act of the Black Brothers.

And then...that gorgeous, marvelous, beautifully crafted scene of Astapor... I was really astonished by the level of production and the awesome special effects they used.

In a nutshell, of this episode, all I can say is: PERFECT!

By far the best episode in the entire season!
And Now His Watch Is Ended is by far the best episode in the entire season, but it's not the only one (I'll get to the last two episodes of Season 3 later). The pacing's much tighter, the story/script is still well-written, the performances are still solid, the relationships still shine, the directing and editing is still nice, and the scenery's still gorgeous.

There are no problems I have with this episode because after three great episodes for Season 3, this is really starting out even more fresher than I thought. So, overall, the best episode in the entire season and does a great job continuing the story lines so neatly.

And Now His Watch Is Ended. S3 EP5 review
mohammedadallawati16 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Soundtrack : (9.5/10) Dialogue : (10/10) Story : (9.8/10) Cinematography : (9.4/10) Character Development : (9.7/10) Conflict : (9.5/10) Excitement : (9.4/10) Reasonableness : (9.7/10) Overall : (9.6/10)

Pros:
  • Gosh the ending is PERFECT. As great payoff for Daenerys's arc. This particular scene shows how much Daenerys is a leader and a strategic thinker. A great build for her personality and she finally gets the badass scene she deserves. I love how she use both Jorah's and Barristan' advice as she buys the unsullied and proves a worthy leader so that they will follow her willingly,

  • Theon mentioning his wrong decisions was amazing and we finally know Ramsey's intentions.

  • Varys's monologue was one of the best dialogue scenes in the show. I wish that the evil part was shown more in the later seasons like it's shown in this episode.

  • Cersie and Olenna talking about their children was pure gold and we get more stunning dialogue.

  • I love the game that is being played between Varys and Baelish. Varys trying to uncover Littlefinger's plans with Olenna was amazing and it shows how smart these characters are.

  • Margery manipulating Joffrey and getting closer with Sansa showing how the Tyrells are playing the game of thrones and how Sansa is being used as a benefit from everyone without her knowing.

  • Jeor Mormont dying from a backstab is ironic as he is an honorable character and gets stabbed by his own men. The mess in Craster's keep was terrifying as everyone is killing everyone and Sam is starting his journey with Gilly.

  • Tywin is a badass. Jaimie getting traumatized by his own hand, and Brienne calling him a coward was amazing.

  • The Hound roasting everyone while being put to trial by combat is just funny and wholesome.

Cons :

  • every scene was great. One of the best episodes and I can't see a false note anywhere.

Warning: Spoilers
I am among the biggest fans of Game of Thrones. But I can't help but being disappointed by the first four episodes of the 3rd season. Nothing is happening. There are a lot of scenes that just seem to fill up time and space. I have no time for platitudes. Make something happen. These long line of people walking through the forest, stopping from time to time to exchange philosophical thoughts do not entertain me. I want action. Like there was in the first two seasons. Then it seemed like I was glued to the TV because it was so captivating. I think that the way series are marked on IMDb encourages that kind of "coasting on reputation" some shows are doing. GOT sits at a comfortable 9.4 as I write this. I think the score stands for the first two seasons. But the third is, at best, a 6.3. I am sorry. Get interesting, stop with the empty dialogs that go nowhere and give us some action!

Olenna Tyrell: Look, little loves. A spider in the garden.
bombersflyup10 January 2018
Warning: Spoilers
And Now His Watch Is Ended, unfortunately ventures beyond its best characters.

Margaery has Joffrey in her web, which makes Cersei uncomfortable. Instead of Jon Snow in the episode and only a little of Tyrion we get a whole lot of Varys, thanks a bunch. Jaime gets continually humiliated and at a real low point, for the better though. Daenerys buys the unsullied and sets all prisoners free, the highlight of the episode. Arya reaches the main group of the Brotherhood without Banners. Arya: You murdered Mycah! The butcher's boy. My friend. He was twelve years old. He was unarmed, and you rode him down. You slung him over your horse like he was some deer.

Olenna Tyrell's played by Diana Rigg of "On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969)." The best James Bond film and the best Bond girl.

Daenerys, Jaime, Arya and Margaery the standouts.

disappointed Warning: Spoilers
season 2 and now 3 has been awful and not on par with season 1. khaleesi(queen of no where and nothing) was able to easily sabotage a man who claims to control 10s of thousands of army, if it was that easy other factions with actual powers and army would have done that already, the only good thing is they actually showed an army that looked like in 10s of thousands, the other factions bragged of army being in 20s or 10 thousands and all i say was 50 in d battle. i am greatly disappointed, a man who claims to have a vast army wasn't intelligent enough to secure a dragon ( a wild animal who spits fire) before handing her command of an army.

Revenge Is a Dish Best Served Cold
claudio_carvalho27 April 2014
Jaime is humiliated by his captors and Brienne unsuccessfully tries to protect him. Tyrion meets with Varys and he tells how he was sold to a sadistic sorcerer that castrated him. He advises Tyrion to be patient and finishes opening a large box and Tyrion sees the sorcerer locked inside. Joffrey shows The Great Sept of Baelor to Margaery and Cersei realizes that Margaery has Joffrey under control. Then she meets her father and tells that she is worried since Margaery is manipulating Joffrey. Varys meets Oleanna and they have a long conversation about Sansa. The Margaery meets Sansa and she tells that they would be sisters if Sansa married her brother Loras. The Hound is judged by The Brotherhood without Banners through a trail by combat. Theon is led by the youngsters that saved him to meet his sister Yara in a dark chamber and soon he finds that his escape was another sadistic means of torturing him. Lord Commander Mormont tries to calm down his men that are starving but one of them kills Craster and another one stabs Mormont on the back killing him. Sam flees with Gilly and her son through the frozen woods. Daenerys has a surprising attitude toward Kraznys mo Nakloz and leaves Astapor with her dragons and the army.

In "And Now His Watch Is Ended", the arrogant Jaime is humiliated by his captors. Varys explains to Tyrion that revenge Is a dish best served cold. Theon is receiving what he deserves and it was good to see him back to the chamber of torture. The situation outside The Wall seems to be out of control with the murder of Lord Commander Mormont. But the best part of the show is Daenerys attitude in Astapor. My vote is eight.

Didn't want it to end
TheLittleSongbird9 January 2018
Came to 'Game of Thrones' fairly late in the game and due to being so busy the binge-watching was gradual. Have found myself truly loving the show, very quickly becoming one of my favourites. It totally lives up to the hype and not only does it do the brilliant source material justice (a rarity in television) it is on its own merits one of the finest, most addictive and consistently compelling shows in recent years and quality-wise it puts a lot of films in recent years to shame.

"And Now His Watch is Ended" has often been lauded as the best episode of Season 3. Have to agree with this, certainly better than the previous still great episodes. While "And Now His Watch is Ended" may not be one's definition of action-packed, the themes of revenge and betrayal have very rarely been this enthralling, even when character and dialogue-heavy. Up to this point in the season, it is the tightest paced, where things felt fully settled, in terms of introducing new characters and advancing older characters and subplots, and the most emotionally complex.

"And Now His Watch is Ended" starts in a way that carries on from the end of the previous episode "Walk of Punishment" and reminds us of that ending's shock value, and the brutal shocks, emotional complexities and surprises keep coming. Right up until the highlight of not just the episode, but of the season, the mind-blowing ending with Daenerys, now a character you don't want to under-estimate.

While the acting is superb across the board, the biggest mention has to go to Emilia Clarke, up to this point it was her best acting on the show and still holds up as one of her finest hours.

Visually, "And Now His Watch is Ended" looks amazing. The scenery is throughout spectacular, the sets are hugely atmospheric and beautiful on the eyes with a real meticulous eye for detail and the costumes suit the characters to a tee. The make-up is beautifully done. The visual effects are some of the best of any television programme and are not overused or abused, the scale, the detail and how they actually have character and soul are better than those in a lot of the big-budget blockbusters. As well the cinematography and editing, which are cinematic quality as well.

One cannot talk about "And Now His Watch is Ended" without mentioning the thematically, orchestrally and atmospherically multi-layered music scoring and the unforgettable main theme. Again, worthy of a high-budget fantasy/action/drama film.

It is hard not to be bowled over by the quality of the writing, outstanding isn't a strong enough adjective to describe how good the writing is once again. It always has a natural flow, is layered and thought-provoking and demonstrates a wide range of emotions such as suspenseful tension, poignant pathos and witty humour. The story is paced beautifully, structured with such nuance and attention to coherence, a high emotional level and is done with intelligence, passion and sensitivity.

To conclude, truly phenomenal episode, worth seeing for Daenerys' final scene alone but everything still works with nothing that one would change. Season 3's best and a 'Game of Thrones' highlight. Didn't want it to end. 10/10 Bethany Cox

There's a lot of good things about this episode. A lot of characters facing hard times, some rewards, small steps forwards, some wild terrors ... And there's a lot of twists and turns. I think this must be one of my favourite Game of Thrones episodes (although admittedly I have several favourites).

No one slave here
AvionPrince1621 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
So we saw that Jaime is a character with some contrast (we saw him helped the woman who escorted him), and a little bit discouraged because of his hand cut off and because he is a prisoner. We saw the power of Daenerys who will kill the merchant that she traded with and will have an army with her plus the dragons: she looks pretty badass now and dangerous. Tyrion try to gather info that prove that his sister tried to kill him. Sansa and Margaery tried to get more close together as friends. Bran is still dreaming. Ary. Cersei have doubts about margaery and that she is going to manipulate Jeoffrey. Theon Greyjoy get trapped. Arya get in conflict.

Pretty interesting. What a great moment when Daenerys take the power and have her army. It really conclude the episode pretty well. The story about the conspiracy about the Lannister who tried to killed her own brother make us wondering if its really true or not. But we dont really know. Maergery seem to play a role with Jeoffrey and will reveal her true face pretty soon i think. Yeah the episode was pretty great and have some interesting events, suspciions, revelations and interesting characters that revealed to be more that it seemed to be. Make us really want to see more of them.

Unchained
hellraiser722 June 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Warning do not watch unless seen episode.

This is another really good episode. It's true most of it is set up but the way it's handled you know it's going to me something big will happen soon, actually something does in the end which I'll get to.

Really liked some of that conversation between Margaery's mom (forgot her name) and Cercei. I kinda like what Margaery's mom disagreement on the world belonging to the young, I don't believe that either. Youth alone is nothing compared to wisdom and experience. Cercei of course tries to defend her point but she can see Margaery's mom kinda has the upper hand on her, in a way it shows that Cercei isn't the only game player in town. We see that more when we see Margaery is clearly manipulated Jofery, it shows that Margaery's true aim is to rule even if it means bending Jofery will to her own.

We even see the Watch descending in the ranks in one scene, I really like seeing Sam actually being human and doing what he should be doing in the first place, not just guard a damn wall all day and night (what the hell do most of the time anyway?) he helps a woman he loves. In a way I can't help but feel it a slight hint that may'be The Watch isn't totally honorable there may be some corruption brewing but what Sam did I felt that an example showing the importance of having a life.

However the highlight of the episode no doubt is with Davenerys, the last scene where just beautiful, knowing her I knew she had an ace up her sleeve and she plays that card well. We see her sell off her dragon to get the army she needs and then comes a great moment when the blowhole slave master says something offensive to her. She then turns around and you can tell from that vicious look she understood what he said, and we see that she's all this time not just understood but can speak the native tongue perfectly.

That speech she gives was just amazing, in a way it's my own feelings toward slavery. And I just couldn't help but cheer as she began the attack when we see her solders slay all of the slave masters and dictators in their path. As well as see her pet dragon go to town or should I say cook the town.

It just goes to show just like the dragons she mothers, Davenerys is truly strong and in that last shot of her marching army she is growing stronger.
