Exactly 30 years after “The Shawshank Redemption,” director Frank Darabont is helming his next massive project: Two episodes of blockbuster series “Stranger Things 5.”
Darabont famously stepped away from filmmaking after his short-lived TNT series “Mob City” that aired for one season in 2013. His last film was 2007’s “The Mist,” adapted from a Stephen King novel. Now, “The Green Mile” helmer is explaining why he came out of an 11-year retirement to direct two episodes of the fifth and final season of “Stranger Things.”
“What really dragged me out of retirement was that my wife and I really love this show,” Darabont told The Daily Beast about the viral Netflix sci-fi series. “Our content now is so filled with horrible people doing horrible things for greedy reasons but ‘Stranger Things’ has so much heart. That positivity is something I really responded to.”

Thanks to projects like The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile, director Frank Darabont has proven himself to be one of the finest directors of all time. The Shawshank Redemption won the Academy Award for Best Picture and is widely regarded as one of the greatest movies ever. Despite entering retirement over a decade ago, Darabont has decided to return to helm one more project: Stranger Things 5.
Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer have entrusted Darabont with directing two episodes of the upcoming final season. Darabont has been out of the business for a while now. His last directorial work came in the form of Mob City in 2013, which was prematurely axed. He was the showrunner for the first two seasons of AMC's The Walking Dead before stepping down, supposedly due to budgeting disagreements with the network.
So what about Stranger Things excited him enough to come out of an 11-year retirement?...

Frank Darabont, best known for helming The Shawshank Redemption, revealed why the fifth and final installment of Netflix’s Stranger Things brought him out of a more than decade-long retirement.
While speaking to The Daily Beast in a retrospective interview tied to the seminal film’s 30th anniversary, Darabont said it was the similar through line of hope that led him to take on directing parts of the forthcoming season.
“What really dragged me out of retirement was that my wife and I really love this show,” he said. “Our content now is so filled with horrible people doing horrible things for greedy reasons but Stranger Things has so much heart. That positivity is something I really responded to.”

Believe it or not, but it’s been 11 years since Frank Darabont has directed anything. However, he was brought out of retirement by the Duffer brothers to helm two episodes of the fifth and final season of Netflix’s Stranger Things.
Darabont is best known as the writer/director of The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile, but he hasn’t been behind the camera since Mob City in 2013. The neo-noir crime drama, which Darabont also created, was cancelled after just six episodes and he hasn’t directed since. Darabont later said that he had been burnt out from decades of over-work, but the uplifting tone of Stranger Things convinced him to come out of retirement.

“The Shawshank Redemption” filmmaker Frank Darabont ended an 11-year retirement from directing when the opportunity to helm two episodes of “Stranger Things 5” presented itself. Why? He recently told The Daily Beast that it’s the blockbuster Netflix series’ heart that convinced him it was time to step out of retirement and direct again.
“What really dragged me out of retirement was that my wife and I really love this show,” Darabont said about “Stranger Things.” “Our content now is so filled with horrible people doing horrible things for greedy reasons but ‘Stranger Things’ has so much heart. Darabont’s last directing credit was episodes of the short-lived TNT drama series “Mob City” in 2013. He hasn’t directed a movie since 2007’s Stephen King horror adaptation “The Mist.” His other big directorial efforts include “The Green Mile” and “The Walking Dead.”

Frank Darabont has briefly exited retirement to direct a couple of Stranger Things episodes. But could it lead to a permanent return?
Frank Darabont has only directed four feature films, a pretty slim filmography by the standards of most directors. However, when three of those films are The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile and The Mist, a trio of classic Stephen King adaptations, it makes you wonder why Darabont’s body of work as a director isn’t larger.
After all, Frank Darabont’s disappearance from the world of film directing doesn’t appear to be some kind of self-imposed exile such as the one that Quentin Tarantino is planning for himself.
Instead, Darabont’s retreat from filmmaking seemed to happen around the time that he became embroiled in a bitter creative and ultimately, legal dispute over the future of AMC’s The Walking Dead show, which he steered to...

A new report suggests that Frank Darabont is set to helm episodes of Stranger Things, returning to the director’s chair for the first time since The Walking Dead.
We haven’t heard much from Frank Darabont in the last decade. Darabont directed IMDb’s number one ranked movie of all time, The Shawshank Redemption, not to mention other admired Stephen King adaptations, The Green Mile and The Mist. He’s also the guy who got the TV show The Walking Dead up and running to the point that it became a worldwide phenomenon.
Darabont left The Walking Dead after a couple of seasons over creative differences, however. He went on to launch another TV show, Mob City, which would only run for six episodes, and hasn’t directed a feature film since 2007’s The Mist. Davalos joined the series at the beginning of Season 3, playing the role of Kristin Gaines, a member of the FBI’s Fugitive Task Force and a former Naval Intelligence Officer. Frank Darabont created a heckuva conundrum for himself when his feature directing debut, "The Shawshank Redemption," wound up becoming one of the most beloved movies of all time. For starters, he joined an elite fraternity of filmmakers who'd hit the bullseye with a difficult-to-adapt Stephen King story. More troublesome, King had just launched into another prison yarn, one that begged to become a motion picture. One that fit Darabont like a bespoke suit.
"The Green Mile" was a publishing event in 1996. Between March and August, King released a new, slender volume imparting the tragedy of John Coffey, a gentle giant wrongfully consigned to Death Row for the rape and murder of two girls. Unlike "The Shawshank Redemption," this serialized story contained the kind of mystical elements one expects from a King novel. Coffey is not only the opposite of a killer, he is a saint possessed of healing powers. King...

It’s a racist attack targeting Ada’s mixed heritage daughter Elizabeth, the child of Black British Intelligence Officer Colonel Ben Younger, who died in a car bomb attack last season. Soleil Moon Frye became the ultimate Eighties child star on Punky Brewster, at the age of seven. She played America’s favorite wise-cracking moppet, wearing mismatched high-tops and extolling the virtues of Punky Power. The show was eventually cancelled in 1988 — and that’s when Frye started toting a video camera around, filming her other child-star friends, just in time for their awkward teen years. Kid 90, a new documentary that begins streaming on Hulu today, turns her home-movie footage into a time capsule of show-biz kids growing up in Nineties Hollywood.

Variety has learned that the broadcaster is developing a one-hour drama about a young woman who begins training in Mma. Titled “American Fighter,” the series follows JoJo Raines, who has a dead end life in a dead end town, hanging out with her friends because there’s nothing else to do and venting her frustrations with her fists in fights of her own making.
That is until she gets into it with the wrong people and is assigned community service at the veteran’s rehabilitation hospital. There she meets a wounded vet who teaches her how to hone her aggression in the form of Mma fighting. Through her training, she begins to find a sense of purpose and even a possible future, as long as the rest of the problems in her life, and her own self-destructive behavior, don’t take her down first.

Through her training, she begins to find a sense of purpose and even a possible future, as long as the rest of the problems in her life, and her own self-destructive behavior, don’t take her down first.

It’s almost impossible to imagine “The Shawshank Redemption” being released today; it’s not the sort of film studios make. Nor was the Columbia Pictures title a hit upon its release on September 24, 1994; it grossed $28.3 million on a $25 million budget. However, it received seven Oscar nominations and went on to become one of the most-celebrated films in history. It was selected for inclusion in the Library of Congress, tops IMDb’s list of highest-rated films (second only to “The Godfather”), and has made a tourist attraction out of the Ohio town where it was shot.

Criminals of New York City, watch out! Frank Castle returns this Friday for the second season of Marvel’s The Punisher. Jon Bernthal’s gun-toting vigilante with a vendetta against wrong-doers doesn’t look to be any less angry and bloodthirsty in the sophomore – and probably last – run of the Netflix show, and if you want proof of that, just check out the trailer above.
This new promo for season 2 gives us a flavor of where the upcoming batch of episodes will take Frank. It seems he’s trying to lay low when we catch up with him, and he’s even started a romance. With The Man in the High Castle‘s Alexa Davalos, no less (fans of the actress will remember she and Bernthal already starred opposite each other in Mob City). The feud between Frank Darabont and “The Walking Dead” just got shockingly public. The director of “The Shawkshank Redemption” and “The Mist” developed the zombie adaptation for television before being fired in the middle of production on Season 2. Ever since December 2013, he’s been in a lawsuit against the series, claiming $280 million in damages over allegedly being denied rightful profit participation. The emails were released this morning by The Hollywood Reporter.

We chat to Jon Bernthal about his new film, Pilgrimage, as well as The Punisher, Daredevil and more...
Jon Bernthal is a very busy man. In 2017 alone he’s got seven projects listed and you’d be hard pressed not to catch at least one of them, with Pilgrimage just hitting the shelves, Baby Driver currently across cinema screens, and the rather exciting prospect of The Punisher series hitting Netflix in November.
In Pilgrimage Bernthal plays a mute, channelling his performance through an unspoken relationship with a young, naïve monk (Tom Holland) which gives the film its heart and drive, as they set off as part of a group to try and remove a sacred relic from harms’ way. The film is, for the most part, a tense game of cat and mouse with various threats closing in on them from all sides (including an especially nasty...

“The third season of “Salem” dawns with the triumph of the witches’ plan to remake the New World by bringing the devil to earth and making Salem his capital. And there’s only one person on earth who can beat the devil — the very witch that birthed him, his mother, Mary Sibley. The only problem is—she’s dead. Or is she?...
