It started out great, but flopped tremendously...
paul_haakonsen7 September 2013
I remember the first time I saw the poster for this movie, and I decided to stay clear of the movie, believing it to be something in the likes of the "Chernobyl Diaries" movie also from 2012, as the poster is much alike, and that "Chernobyl Diaries" movie was just abysmal.

Then come 2013 and I found out that Joe Taslim is in this movie, so my interest was instantly caught, and I decided to give the movie a go regardless of prior assumptions.

And now having seen it, I sit here with a really bad taste in my mouth. The movie starts out well enough, but then it just peaks and becomes too much, and the movie just spiraled out of control and everything just fell to the floor.

The story is about a group of hired soldiers led by a treasure hunter to seek out the fabled Yamashita's Gold treasure. As the group becomes trapped inside an old mine dating back to World War II, they quickly figure out that they are not alone in the dark mine.

Right, well the story did have potential to be interesting and it did start out well enough and promising enough. But then suddenly after the first revealings of what has been lurking around in the long-abandoned mine, then suddenly director Steven Sheil decided to throw in three squads of what I assume to be reanimated dead Japanese Bushido samurai warriors. And that is when the line snapped for the movie. Once these were introduced, the movie just went from an adequate action horror movie to a laughable attempt at an action horror movie. It was just awful and abysmal to witness. These animated samurai warriors totally killed any shred of enjoyment and entertainment that the movie had.

As for the acting, then people were doing good enough jobs with their given roles. And as I mentioned earlier, then it was because of Joe Taslim that I decided to give this movie a chance. Unfortunately his role wasn't all that big, much to my disappointment.

It should be said that the movie actually does fare well on the effects and creature make-up department. Thumbs up for that, at least.

I supposed this abandoned mine should never have been opened, and then at least I wouldn't have wasted 87 minutes watching it.

Could be better with a bit more effort
deloudelouvain23 March 2017
I wouldn't watch Dead Mine in the theater but for on television it's okay I guess. And by okay I mean it just passes, because it's still an average movie. The story was promising but at the end I thought it was poorly executed. For example when you're on the run for evil murderers you don't stop to watch how they butcher somebody, you just keep running. It's small mistakes like that that will bring the movie down. The actors are also not Oscar winners. It's pretty lame sometimes. But the story is still watchable if you have an open mind and are not too critical. With a bit more effort and better actors the movie could have been better but I guess they didn't have the budget for that.

Missing Some Details!

Warning: Spoilers
The point that I'll mention in this review containing spoiler scenes, so don't read this if you haven't seen the movie.

The story plot was okay, but unfortunately there were scenes that did not make any sense, even though for a horror action movie like this film, Dead Mine. For examples, there was a scene of a grenade that blew next to one of the actor. Instead of his body getting torn apart, in this film he managed to survive. He still got injured, not from the blast, but from the rocks that fell down and pressed on his legs. I mean, c'mon man... And how could the creatures that appeared as the Imperial Army in a heavy armor made from steel, suddenly popped out of the lake? They supposed to be drown due of the heavy things that they carried in their bodies. Anyway, the film wasn't bad, still okay to be watched though.

A Good Example of How Bad a Movie can Be
claudio_carvalho26 July 2014
In an isolated island in Indonesia, an expedition is apparently seeking the legendary Yamashita's Gold. Out of the blue, they are attacked and seek refugee in an abandoned Japanese bunker. Soon they discover that the place was a secret laboratory in the World War II where the prisoners were guinea pig in weird experiments. Further, they are trapped inside with strong and resistant creatures created by these experiments. Will they succeed to escape from the dead mine?

I really do not understand how producers (HBO, not Sci-Fi) can spend their money in garbage like that. The story is a terrible rip-off of "The Descent" and I believe anyone who read it would have at least some doubts to make a movie. The dialogs are extremely poor and the motive of the expedition is a mess. Who are the guys that shoot the expedition? How the Japanese survivor had eaten and drunken along all those years trapped in the bunker with the creatures? How someone could inject a rusted syringe with a sixty and something year-old substance in another person with the intention of healing him? The group splitting to be more easily killed is one annoying clichés. The awful lack of conclusion seems to show the intention of a sequel, meaning more wasted money. Last but not the least; the acting is more dreadful than the creatures. My vole is two.

Exotic location, exotic vibe, mediocre movie...
Rabbit-Reviews22 May 2013
By now we are used to seeing all sorts of horrors coming to us from Asia, but they all had one thing in common, they were seriously messed up, with rare exceptions. Dead Mine, an Indonesian medium budget movie takes an almost textbook approach to storytelling, and while graphic violence is present, it isn't sick or anything, but just as I said more classically bloody that we are used to seeing in American horrors. The movie itself is nothing special, but the exotic locations, cast and story make up for that. The director Steven Sheil managed to make the movie look really good, with some innovative camera angles and relatively suspenseful scenes, sacrificing reality for looks. Although when the movie's about zombies, Second World War and strange things lurking in the depths of the mine, reality discussion is really not a valid one.

An expedition led by a very wealthy, I guess scientist, called Price has finally found the thing they were looking for in Indonesia, an old abandoned bunker from WW 2. Price, accompanied by his girlfriend, a Japanese journalist on a quest to find out more about the war and a bunch of mercenaries in charge of their safety, decides to take a closer look. As soon as he said it, they were attacked by a local gang and forced to find shelter in the mine that has been converted into a bunker. After the cave in, they find themselves trapped in the mine with only one option, to push forward, into the darkness. What they don't know is that the mine is not abandoned, but far from it...

Fascination by Nazi zombies is something that has kept filmmakers in Europe occupied for quite some time, but now we are seeing this trend in Asia with Japans soldiers. While the directing was good and they managed to make Dead Mine look visually great, the story and the dialogue needs to be better. The thing that I missed the most is the suspense building up as they go deeper and deeper into the mine... Check out Dead Snow, a movie with a similar subject if you liked Dead Mine. It's not the best movie out there, but it's worth a watch...

Almost Complete Waste of time!!! Gender imitation
alatasdimitrios10 May 2013
If you haven't already seen it, i recommend you to see Outpost 1 & 2 thriller movies.

This movie is a bad imitation of Outpost and Predator movies.

Rating: Script: 1/10 Scene Effects: 4-5/10 Actors: 2 (No feeling at all not even at a single line) Mix of the above : -5/10

The scenery in many scenes looks fake. The main monsters are nothing special

Highly predictable!

Actually i couldn't find a good thing to tell about this movie.

Again!!!

Mine robbers assemble
kosmasp13 October 2013
There is a nice little introduction to the movie (the first scene), which the rest of the movie does not really live up to. Even though there is a scene later on, that almost exactly copies it. Then there is another great shot from above on one of the characters that is really good. You can also enjoy the movie, but I think there was more there. And I'm not talking about the stupid reason our group gets themselves into a "trap" (logic almost never applies when it comes to horror).

I like movies that put different characters together and a sort of survival game begins. This movie is up that alley. Most of the characters are not as nicely defined as they could be though and the movie drags a little bit. Cinematography is good as mentioned, but there could be more, especially if you consider that the movie actually has some highlights.

Started OK but the last part left me with a bad aftertaste
timelesswind22 May 2015
I wanted to watch a horror movie yesterday and after a quick search I chose Dead Mine. Well, the "horror in a mine" concept is nothing rare so I didn't expect to encounter something new plot wise to begin with. What I was expecting to see in an Indonesian B-movie like this were some nice killing scenes and probably some scary or intense moments. Also, most horror B-movies nowadays usually make up for their "bad" plot with lots of blood and gore but that's not the case here. This movie isn't much scary either. Even at moments that the protagonists are hunted down and the watcher should feel the intensity of it the director just failed to make it happen.

Coming to the story now, I have to say it was not that bad.It actually had more potential than it delivered if I can say that. Of course, there are cliché characters placed here and there but it happens to most movies(I even found myself liking the character of Warren's gf) .The plot is quite good at first(not something entirely fresh but decent) and seems like it might lead somewhere good. Still the bad pace, the lack of attention to detail and the horrible 15-20 last mins of the movie where the story goes off track ruin the effort made before.

I know that what I've said so far will probably make you not wanting to watch this movie at all but its not entirely unwatchable. It's still better than many movies out there. So if you like horror movies and got nothing else to watch give it a try. It will be a decent one-time watch, though the last part of the movie might leave you with a bad aftertaste like in my case.

A Real Cave-In As In End!!
zardoz-1330 May 2013
Warning: Spoilers
"Dead Mine" is a dreadful movie along the lines of "The Descent" except that Japanese troops from World War II are hiding in a remote cave. The protagonist, Warren Price (Les Loveday), is leading a heavily-armed group of guys with guns searching for the legendary gold horde of General Yamashita in an isolated, shutdown mine in this modest Indonesian horror thriller. Gunmen drive our heroes into the mine, and they encounter pasty-faced guys and old-fashioned samurai warriors. Eventually, they discover that hideous experiments were conducted on soldiers. Nothing struck me as remotely scary. This is one of those movies where everybody dies and we're supposed to enjoy the way that the villains—Japanese soldiers from World War II—administer death with their swords. Characterization is flat, exposition is perfunctory, while performances are adequate. The opening scene when an armed man is sucked into a hole gets things moving fast but it is nothing designed to induce long range horror. Like but never as compelling as "The Descent."

A Nutshell Review: Dead Mine
DICK STEEL26 September 2012
Dead Mine chalked up a number of firsts in the region, being HBO Asia's debut original feature, and Singapore based company Infinite Studios' new soundstage facility in Batam, Indonesia being used for the production. Technically, the movie boasts some excellent production values, from stunts to props, sound engineering and special effects to art direction, with the soundstage adding a dimension to filmmaking around the region, with one more slated for Singapore, but as the adage goes, never forget about the story, as it is still king.

The screenplay by Ziad Semaan and director Steven Sheil has an interesting premise, but unfortunately lapsed back to genre clichés. If the pace was kept high, and story tight, then Dead Mine would have been something of a shiny debut for the collaboration between companies and geographies. As an action-horror, it took quite a while for characters to be established around the usual caricatures that pepper the genre already, before the first big set action sequence acted as catalyst for the narrative to move forward, thrusting the entire cast into the titular location. Things slowed down a lot, in between posing, spewing rote dialogue, and traversing the many nooks and crannies of Dead Mine, but when it finally shifted to the high gear, it showed potential that never really reached a high.

Centered around the legend of Yamashita's treasure, the WWII Japanese General who had been rumoured to stash some handsome gold somewhere in the South East Asian region, Sulawesi, Indonesia becomes zeroed in for exploration, funded by corporate rich kid type Price (Les Loveday), who had brought along his girlfriend Su-Ling (Carmen Soo) for the ride, with his engineer Stanley (Sam Hazeldine) in tow, and researcher Rie (Miki Muzuno) to provide the brains for their expedition. Needing protection as they enter a foreign land, they engage the soldiering mercenaries in Captain Tino Prawa (Ario Bayu), with his rag tag team consisting of Djoko (Joe Taslim), Ario (Mike Lewis) and strong man Sergeant Papa Ular (Bang Tigor). My initial fears it may be something like Sanctum, but thankfully this was better, but not without its own illogical moments that exist for plot convenience.

Once they get all chummy and acquainted, the set action pieces are what stands out in the film, aside from the nicely done production sets that made the Dead Mine an incredibly believable location, with two separate tiers being the sandy underground, and the concrete labyrinth above it which suggests the location was more than a potential treasure store, but houses something a lot more sinister, harking back to experiments and torture. There's no lack of gore that adhered to a limit set to keep the ratings as low as possible, so plenty of violence actually happen offscreen, before cutting to show the bloody, gory end result.

And the makeup and costuming department is no slack either, having creature designers work overtime to come up with Mutant POWs, which serve up a lot more terror than the more powerful Imperial Guard type enemies decked in Samurai gear, because as mentioned, the pace could have been kept high to add a degree of urgency, tension and genuine dread to the entire situation. There's plenty of running, and careful treading within the mine, but a little speeding up of lengthy explanations would have been appreciated, and perhaps making it a wee bit more of a fair fight would have sweetened it up a little, than to have it quite one- sided.

Between the cast members, I thought the Indonesian actors triumphed in the film, especially with Ario Bayu's charismatic allure that made it believable that he's the de-facto leader a skilled crew would work under. Anyone who had watched The Raid: Redemption would be familiar with Joe Taslim, and it's interesting now that Hollywood had already come knocking on his door with the Fast and Furious franchise. Unfortunately he has only a bit role here, and doesn't show off his martial arts for his role. Bang Tigor is yet another actor with immense presence on screen, and that's not because he's bulked up.

Still, Dead Mine is a genuine showreel of the kind of production HBO (and its Asia arm) is capable of, with a decent production budget, collaborating with talent in the region, both in front of and behind the camera, and yet again a testament to Infinite Studio's promotion of how a soundstage facility that's really a first of its kind here, could benefit filmmakers to be a little bit more ambitious in telling a story that can be set almost anywhere the imagination dares to venture. So long as it's driven by a strong script, I'm pretty sure we can be set for a lot more variety in the kind of films that could be told in the months to come.

Dead plot...dead acting...just dead!
paulclaassen8 August 2018
This felt like a 'The Descent' wannabe, only very theatrical and not very believable. Sam Hazeldine was by far the best actor, as I found the rest very mediocre, as if they didn't really believe in the film themselves. The make-up effects are so clearly B-movie, but this was low budget after all, so I'll just convince myself they did the best with what they had. The plot and execution thereof, though, was not credible. And what an absolutely stupid ending! The abrupt ending WILL make you feel you've wasted your time watching this.

No zombies included
bowmanblue8 September 2014
With so many horror B-movies with the word 'dead' in the title, you could be forgiven for thinking that 'Dead Mine' would contain hordes of cheaply-made up flesh-eating ghouls hunting down a cast list of annoyingly-attractive drama students. It doesn't though. Instead it's more one of those films where a group of surprisingly unattractive platoon of soldiers encounter a bunker of undead Nazis (with disastrous consequences).

And it's always Nazis. It seems you can't tunnel more than two feet below Europe without unearthing a secret World War II experiment of some kind or another. But not here. Dead Mine is completely different. Here we're in an island off the coast of Japan and there isn't a single psychotic World War II scientist to be found. They're Japanese instead. Here, our hapless treasure hunters get trapped in (guess what?) a mine, only to be stalked by what can best be described as Samauri Golum gimps.

It's like if 'Decent' and 'Outpost' had a child, then 'Dead Mine' would be their offspring. Only it's not really as good as either. That's not to say that it's (that) bad. It's no classic (not even a cult classic), but, if you're in the mood, it's watchable enough.

Performances aren't anything special. You'll pretty much guess who's going to die and in which order from the beginning, as most people's motives are pretty self explanatory.

There's not as much gore as you might think, which will annoy some people. The budget obviously didn't allow for that much in the way of special effects.

The story is as you'd expect and starts off pretty well, however the final act gets a little weird and may leave you wondering what happened.

All in all, if you haven't seen Outpost or Decent and you find this film on some movie streaming website and you don't have to pay for it, then it might fill an hour and a half. As I didn't have to pay to watch it I'm being more lenient on it. I wouldn't say it was worth the price of a cinema admission though!

Deadening on the mind
jimlacy200321 June 2013
This movie started out pretty well.

I loved the premise, it minded me a bit of "Outpost 2007" (a must see if you like horror/action films). This starts out kind of similar, except here it's an old abandoned WW2 Japanese base rather then an Nazi one.

The actors pretty good and appealing over all but could have been better, a bit too flippant.

It started it out well, but then about a quarter way in it took a sudden bad turn into the cliché. It became every other mysterious cave, abandoned base, haunted asylum, type movie you've already seen before; complete with stereotype troglodyte like creatures scuttling around in the dark. It's not just that, if it were done well it would probably still be entertaining. Instead it was rather droll and predictable.

I gave up on it, not wanting to suffer through to the end.

Skip this one and watch something like "Outpost" instead. The better original that this one this tries to copy and fails.

you know the movie is sub-par...
Djoulz28 August 2013
...when the trailer shows "night shots" being actual day shots with a filter applied to them -__-

I have never been a huge fan of low budget flicks (rare exceptions), because their flaws usually override the good things about them! here, acting wise, it's the typical group of people (here treasure hunters) with the typical casting: good looking guys, bunch of girls, etc... script wise, it's basically the classic "look for something in a remote & dark place, where something is lurking"...unfortunately, it doesn't add anything or bring the genre to new heights: same old, same old!

Not recommended, even though the production was pretty nice, all things considered: typical Sci-Fi TV acting & directing overall.

Warning: Spoilers
I can be pretty short about this. While the general idea of the script is fine, it reminds me too much of other movies such as 'The Descent' and 'The cave', which in fact are WAY better! Trying to reinvent the wheel mostly does not work, and it does not work here either. Yeah OK, the script is different, but the main idea is the same: flesh eating/killing monsters in some sort of cave. The acting is mediocre at best. To be honest, it's hard to come up with a decent review, as there is very little to say about this movie. I personally found this rather boring, not innovative and a waste of time. I think giving it 5 stars is being very generous.

Zero - that's right zero stars!
jamestkirk-2992823 September 2019
I wish I could say this review contained spoilers because it would suggest there was something to spoil about this film. However, it was so abject that the director and assembeld cast have already done that for you. I won't bore you with the details of the risible plot because there are plenty of other reviewers who have done that. What they have not told you is that this film is a cheat. Yes a cheat. I don't care if you haven't paid a penny to watch it, if you watch it to the end, as I stupidly did, it will cheat you out of almost two hours of your life. You know that when a horror film starts out with a group of six, the monsters/ aliens/ zombies/ evil incarnations et al will pick them off one by one. Par for the course. Except in the final scene, we have one character turned into a zombie/ living dead figure another who submerges into a lake to escape the ridiculous Samurai warriors and a plaintive girl struggling up a beach with the warriors emerging behind her and.........roll the credits. Seriously, as the warriors approach her, it goes to black screen and then credits. So what happened to our hero who dived into the lake, the zombified character and the girl? Don't know. I am only writing this because I feel so angry that the film didn't even offer a cop-out ending. There wasn't even an ending! Did they run out of money? Did they become as bored as the rest of us and thought "Hey what, y'know everyone let's call it a wrap because there's a great cocktail bar near here and it's gotta be more fun than doing this." Cheats!

Undead Samurai Super-Soldiers Still Fighting WWII - Awesome, Yeah? NOT!!!
P3n-E-W1s33 October 2019
Here we go again, different location, different nation, but the same WWII bunker story. Instead of the German's and the Nazi's we have the Japanese and the undead Samurai. This in itself should have made for some great and spectacularly gory fighting scenes... but it doesn't.

This isn't just down to the direction and special effects though; the story plays a major part in this disappointment. The writers, Ziad Semaan and Steven Sheil, meanders through the telling. It starts well and then gradually slows and slows. There are a lot of pregnant pauses and translating. All of which isn't necessarily needed. Then by the time, the crap hits the fan and the undead Samurai super-soldiers appear (which is way too late in the film) the director cannot increase the pace enough to re-envigorate the viewer.

The director, Steven Shiel, isn't too bad, though a bit more imagination wouldn't have gone amiss. Everything about the shoot is average. There's no play with light. Even though they're in an ancient bunker the lights work brilliantly - Great Japanese Electronics. Not once do the lights go out to create tension. Unfortunately, Sheil isn't able to create tension or suspense in the light. He could have tried different camera angles, blurred backgrounds with moving shapes-come-shadows. But, no. However, this doesn't damage the film too bad but it would have made it so much better.

The best thing about this film is the strength of the cast. Each of them gives a good performance of their character. Sam Hazeldine is particularly good as Stanley. He has screen presence. You know when he's on-screen and he delivers his lines superbly. He makes his character realistic and you can't help but believe in him. Two couples have some nice chemistry together. One is Warren Price (Les Loveday) and Rie (Miki Mizuno) who are lovers but just think about making the quick buck. The others are, Captain Tino Prawa (Ario Bayu) and his second in command - these two have a fine bromance going for them. The acting does lift the story and the film, but not enough. It's watchable, though, I don't think you'll be recommending it to anyone.

If you've not watched a WWII Bunker horror flick before... There are better than this around to cut your teeth on. Check out the Outpost series. However, if you're all watched up and there's nothing else on (which was my case) then this will pass an hour and a half. But the slowness and meandering story may bore you a little.

Feel free to check out my Absolute Horror list-come-chart to see this ranks or to find something to new to view.

Same old uninspired stuff.
drystyx18 October 2021
Sheil and Semaan combine for more of the same Hollywood formula of hate and alienating and depressing the audience.

This story about soldiers and scientists finding unbeatable creatures is just the same stuff we always get.

We know exactly how it will end, because we're so used to "mechanics" of resources writing and directing with absolutely no strategy and absolutely no inspiration.

Just copy what they see over and over.

It gets old. It got old the first time it was ever done. It really got old in the mid sixties when this kind of formula of hate began to really get praise from critics who were installed into the media by the mob.

Depressing and with zero value.

Interesting idea
seularts8 May 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I have to say that this movie did surprise me in the end. Sure, it is below average when it comes to acting and character development, but I've seen way more worse.

Two things I appreciated about this movie: one is the fact that they used Japanese language, and not some flimsy hybrid English stray hobo slang thing with the Japanese actors; two, the attention to details and a very well organized set and environment.

Thou the characters in the movie were very poor developed and the lines were just dull, the action did compensate for that loss. As I said, the ending did surprise me, a lot in fact, because it wasn't predictable and it kind of showed that the main characters weren't indestructible and did face a dangerous situation and certain death.

The plot is there, not very well explained but it does give a proportion of reality to the events, but, in the same time, it may be also stretched a bit. Let's be serious, those soldiers didn't move for 70 years and when a stupid guy enters a freaking sand circle they all weak up ready for action!? I give it a 7/10 just because it has potential and it did kept me watching all the scenes without making me want to skip faster to the ending. I hope this movie director/writer is just starting his career and will learn to get better actors, for his future projects, because his ideas for horror genre could make him the next best thing.

Good, but Frustrating
By-TorX-115 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
As other reviewers have noted, Dead Mine is a bit of a mash-up of The Descent with Outpost, but it does have a charm of its own. A key element of the film is that it needed to move much more quickly, but the focus upon Unit 731 is novel and gives the film a sense of originality and a clear rationale for the mutated Japanese soldiers. Of the 'creatures', the differing classes is really interesting, with the muzzled feral creatures acting in an effective way, but the film really scores with the awesome Imperial Guards. Of the Guards, their visual introduction in their terracotta warrior stance is great and they really are impressive and conceptually excellent, to the extent that, while the film ends rather choppily (ha!), I was totally on board with it as I didn't want the splendid Imperial Guard to be defeated! However, they should have been introduced a little sooner and some of the pointless bickering and wandering mid-movie scenes cut down (again, which would have left room for a clearer conclusion). So, a mixed bag of a horror film, but the elements of originality are very good and the main 'villains' are well conceived as who could ever have a problem with zombie samurai?

Good "TV movie" style action flick
looneychrisjess10 January 2014
I suppose I am in the minority in liking this movie.

Once I got the feel for the style of movie it was (its more like a TV movie than a feature film, you can tell by the poor quality of the indoor sets, the not so smart dialogue, etc), my expectations lessened and I loosened up and came out of it satisfied. It kind of reminded me of other movies that I enjoyed like The Descent and Devils Pass.

The story wasn't original (people with a hidden agenda hiring ex-army guys to guide them through a hostile jungle) but the acting was believable, the way the hidden agenda unfolds is full of action and there was even an unexpected ending.

Would I watch it again and recommend it to people who don't mind HBO Asia movies, yes.

I guess I'm a cheese ball.
