The ethics of documentary filmmaking is not a new topic of debate, but after last month’s Washington Post article about an Afghan man allegedly murdered by the Taliban as a consequence of his participation in Matthew Heineman’s Oscar shortlisted 2022 documentary “Retrograde,” the discussion around the moral responsibility of nonfiction filmmakers has once again heated up.
Unlike with journalists, there are no widely-accepted standards that documentary filmmakers are expected to abide by. Regulations for personal nonfiction storytelling can be counterintuitive. Intrusive. Unless a director is working on a documentary for PBS’ “Frontline” series, known for adherence to journalism standards, situational ethics determined on a case-by-case are more often than not the norm.
“Retrograde” tells the story of the United States’ final months of its 20-year war in Afghanistan. In the film Heineman, whose “Cartel Land” was nominated for an Oscar in 2016, embedded with the U.S. Army Green Berets and Lt.

Movies don’t always need to have a message. Themes are inherent to storytelling, but there are plenty of movies that can simply coast on vibes and star power, or which undermine their own messaging when it gets heavy-handed and preachy. The films that often get audiences really thinking are the ones that cushion that messaging in a mesmerizing story, which don’t tell you what to think but what to think about. Writer and director Sandhya Suri’s debut feature, “Santosh,” premiering at Cannes, is one such film.
“Santosh” is named after its lead character, Santosh Saini — a young widow unaccustomed to working but is now forced to by necessity, who inherits her husband’s profession due to a bizarre legal loophole (a real clause known as “appointment on compassionate ground”). Overnight, Santosh finds herself thrust into the local police force, where a murder investigation becomes a crash course...

The South by Southwest debut of “Stormy” was not your typical Imagine Documentaries premiere.
About adult film star Stormy Daniels’ alleged affair with former President Donald Trump, the film drew an eclectic crowd that included porn stars and “Muppet” director-producer Frank Oz, who sat in the same row as Daniels and her entourage made up mainly of buff bodyguards. Dogs sniffed Austin’s Stateside Theater prior to the screening. After it unspooled, Daniels spoke to the SXSW audience, revealing that she first met “Stormy” exec producer Judd Apatow when he hired her for a small part in his 2005 film “40 Year-Old Virgin.” When she was a no-show due to a death in the family, Apatow sent her flowers and rescheduled her shoot date.
“I thought he would replace me,” Daniels, who would go on to appear in “Knocked Up” for the filmmaker, told the crowd, with director Sarah Gibson standing nearby.

Nisha Pahuja’s Academy Award-nominated documentary, To Kill A Tiger, currently streaming on Netflix, is a tale of the unrelenting courage and unwavering courage of a father seeking justice for his young daughter, who has been raped by three boys from his village. The milieu of this discomforting account of moral rightness is set in a space entrenched in misogynistic practices. Hence, violence against women is tragically a common and normal occurrence and exposes a disturbing gender bias ingrained within societal norms. The troubling reality that comes into focus is how shielding the perpetrators from the people of the village becomes a liability rather than ensuring justice for the victim. Amidst this suffocating atmosphere, the tale of how an individual lacking economic resources combats various human and judicial obstacles is a tale of an oppressed, with humble origins against a fight with a much stronger adversary. There is a conviction,...

“Salem’s Lot” Will Skip Theaters to Stream Exclusively
The long-in-development film adaptation of Stephen King’s “Salem’s Lot” is being made, after all, but will no longer premiere in theaters, opting for a Max-exclusive streaming premiere this year with an official date to be announced later.
Originally intended for a September 2022 theatrical release, New Line Cinema pushed the film to 2023 citing the Covid-19 pandemic shutdown for delays before removing it from its release calendar entirely. King’s 1975 novel was first adapted for the screen with CBS’s 1979 miniseries starring David Soul.
“Salem’s Lot” is written and directed by Gary Dauberman (“Annabelle”). The new version will see Ben Mears (Lewis Pullman) return to his childhood home of Jerusalem’s Lot looking to come up with an idea for a new novel but discovers his hometown’s residents are becoming vampires.
The ensemble also features Alfre Woodard, Makenzie Leigh, Bill Camp, Spencer Treat Clark,...

New Delhi-born Indian Canadian filmmaker, Nisha Pahuja, has shared how Ranjit, the Jharkhand rice farmer whose fight for justice for his gang-raped daughter is the story of her Oscar-nominated documentary feature, ‘To Kill A Tiger’, did not get an American visa when the film was theatrically released in the US in September last year.

In one of the most competitive races in years, 20 Days in Mariupol won the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature tonight, earning director Mstyslav Chernov an Academy Award to go with a Pulitzer Prize.
The film from the Associated Press, PBS’ Frontline and GBH came into the night a slight favorite but faced a tough test from fellow nominees Bobi Wine: The People’s President, The Eternal Memory, Four Daughters, and To Kill a Tiger. The documentary, which premiered at last year’s Sundance Film Festival, centers on the harrowing siege of the Ukrainian port city of Mariupol in the early days of Russia’s full-scale invasion of the country. Thousands of civilians were killed in Russia’s assault.
On the Osar stage, Chernov, a native of the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv, thanked his collaborators and said, “This is the first Oscar in the Ukrainian history. And I’m honored.” But with rising emotion,...

"A man. His daughter. The trial of their lives." In celebration of its Oscar nom, the filmmakers behind the documentary film To Kill a Tiger have announced that the film is now available for streaming on Netflix worldwide. Made by Indian-Canadian filmmaker Nisha Pahuja, To Kill a Tiger first premiered at the 2022 Toronto Film Festival and opened in theaters last fall. It earned an Academy Award nomination in the Best Documentary Film category - and might win tonight. To Kill A Tiger follows the story of Ranjit, a farmer in Jharkhand, India, who takes on the fight of his life when he demands justice for his 13-year-old daughter, the victim of sexual assault. The doc highlights Ranjit's unwavering support for his daughter and the bravery of a family willing to risk everything for justice. Executive Producer Dev Patel states: "I'm beyond thrilled for Nisha and the creative team behind this...

Los Angeles, March 10 (Ians) Priyanka Chopra Jonas was the star at a special screening of ‘To Kill A Tiger’, a soul-searing documentary feature by the Indian-Canadian Emmy-winning director Nisha Pahuja in the race for an Oscar, but the spotlight was on Ranjit, a Jharkhand farmer who’s the ‘hero’ of the film.
In the words of TV actor Sahil Salathia, who attended the exclusive screening on Saturday night at the Netflix headquarters in Los Angeles and Instagrammed about it: “Ranjit ji is an Indian farmer who supported his daughter (right till the end!) who was traumatised by life and the society. We need more role models like him in India.”

31,000 rapes of women or girls were reported in India in 2022, but this number represents only the cases properly recorded at police stations. In a country where a quarter of the population is illiterate and most disputes are handled by the nyaya panchayat, or village justice systems, even when the law says that they should be referred to the state system, experts believe that the real figure is closer to 104,000. The problem is intensified by the lingering, widespread belief that the targets of these crimes are themselves partially responsible for their occurrence. In this climate, getting real justice can feel impossible. Oscar-nominated documentary To Kill A Tiger follows one family which was willing to fight against the odds.

The predictions made by Scott Feinberg and David Rooney of ‘The Hollywood Reporter’ certainly highlight ‘Oppenheimer’, directed by Christopher Nolan, as a strong contender for multiple Oscars. The film’s potential clean sweep, including Best Director for Nolan, reflects the anticipation surrounding its success at the awards.
Among the other favorites mentioned, such as Cillian Murphy for Best Actor and Robert Downey Jr. for Best Supporting Actor in ‘Oppenheimer’, as well as Lily Gladstone for Best Actress in ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’, indicate a diverse range of performances being recognized.

However, the Academy Awards often come with surprises, and there’s always the possibility of unexpected outcomes. The inclusion of ‘To Kill A Tiger’, directed by Nisha Pahuja, as a contender in the Best Documentary Feature category adds cultural significance to the awards ceremony, particularly for Indian audiences.

Les Blank’s ‘Burden of Dreams’ Sees Werner Herzog Try to Push a 320-Ton Ship Up a Hill in the Jungle
On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: Can Documentaries Make for Great Midnight Movies?
American documentaries are facing headwinds in awards. It’s not my area of expertise. But Anne Thompson’s predictions for the Best Documentary Feature race ahead of the 96th Oscars on Sunday explain the situation well.
“With the international membership now representing more than 20 percent of the total voters, this year all five documentary nominees were international,” Thompson wrote, tying the trend to numerous non-fiction films left without distributors at Sundance.

Down to the wire, awards movies are still being rolled out on digital platforms. Two cherished nominees — one an international film, the other a documentary — have debuted this week. Even though it won’t affect either movie’s Oscar odds (voting closed last week), their premieres should be a blessing to all the completists out there.
The contender to watch this week: “Perfect Days”
Three-time Oscar nominee Wim Wenders directed this sublime slice-of-life drama about an unassuming Tokyo janitor (Koji Yakusho) with a quiet daily routine that includes watering his seedlings, visiting the same stores and restaurants, and choosing a cassette tape to hear on his drive to work. “Perfect Days” follows two weeks in the protagonist’s life, one of which involves a series of disruptions that rattle his stasis. The movie will compete for Best International Feature Film at Sunday’s Oscars. It’s currently playing in a handful of theaters,...

Los Angeles, Feb 25 (Ians) Netflix, reports ‘Variety’, has acquired Nisha Pahuja’s Oscar-nominated documentary feature ‘To Kill a Tiger’, which tells the story of the father of a 13-year-old rape victim in Jharkhand and his long and lonely fight for justice.
The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2022 and was awarded best documentary at Palm Springs.
The 127-minute film charts the emotional journey of Ranjit, a farmer in Jharkhand, whose determined effort forces a social reckoning after his 13-year-old daughter is the victim of a gang rape, adds ‘Variety’.
Pahuja, who spent eight months making the film, is a New Delhi-born Canadian director who was previously in the news about her Emmy nomination for the documentary feature ‘The World Before Her’, which is about the complex and conflicting environment in which young girls grow up in India.

Netflix has acquired the Oscar-nominated documentary feature “To Kill a Tiger.”
The film, about a father’s pursuit of justice in rural India, premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2022 and was awarded best documentary at the 2023 Palm Springs International Film Festival. “To Kill a Tiger” was, up until now, the only film this year to be nominated for the best feature doc Oscar without distribution.
Directed and written by New Delhi-born director Nisha Pahuja (“The World Before Her”), the 127-minute film charts the emotional journey of Ranjit, a farmer in Jharkhand, who forces a social reckoning after his 13-year-old daughter is the victim of a gang rape.
Variety‘s film critic Siddhant Adlakha wrote in his “To Kill a Tiger” review that the docu “is a powerful and risky example of the vitality of modern nonfiction filmed in South Asia. It joins recent films like “All That Breathes,...

Kaouther Ben Hania’s Oscar-nominated Four Daughters (Les Filles d’Olfa) won Best Documentary at the César Awards, France’s equivalent of the Academy Awards.
The ceremony, which crowned Anatomy of a Fall as Best Film, took place Friday night at the Olympia Theater in Paris. The win for Four Daughters comes in the midst of final Oscar voting, which runs until 5 p.m. Pt on Tuesday.
As she accepted the award, Tunisian-born Ben Hania turned her attention to the situation in Gaza, which Israel invaded after the October 7 Hamas terror attack on Israel that killed an estimated 1,200 men, women and children and in which Hamas seized more than 240 hostages (roughly a quarter of the hostages are believed dead). The Ministry of Health in Gaza says more than 10,000 Palestinian children have been killed since the start of Israel’s bombing and ground campaign in Gaza.

After a year hit with Hollywood strikes and an early buzz positioning Christopher Nolan’s drama about the creation of the atomic bomb as a frontrunner, sentiments from more than a dozen Oscar voters on the first day of final voting revealed a strong backing for Nolan. “Nolan fucking deserves it,” an anonymous voter emphasizes to Variety, highlighting the widespread acclaim for Nolan’s direction and billion-dollar blockbuster.
Furthermore, Robert Downey Jr., a nominee for supporting actor, appears to be a strong frontrunner for his first Oscar, with a significant majority of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) voters indicating their support for him.
It’s important to note that many voters interviewed have yet to cast their ballots, and plan to do so over the weekend after watching more films. Also, this is merely a small sample of the nearly 10,000 eligible AMPAS voters. Nonetheless, Sandra Hüller...

In April 2019, the Academy made a major change to the category formerly known as best foreign-language film. The following March, at the 92nd Academy Awards, Parasite made Oscar history when it became the first non-English film to take best picture — and the first movie to win the Oscar for the newly designated category of best international film.
The decision to rename the category was born out of the Academy’s efforts to diversify its membership and embrace the global filmmaking community. “We believe that ‘international feature film’ better represents this category, and promotes a positive and inclusive view of filmmaking, and the art of film as a universal experience,” Larry Karaszewski and Diane Weyermann, then co-chairs of the international film committee (Weyermann died in 2021), said in a statement.
The Academy has embraced more foreign-language films in its competition — since Parasite’s win in 2020, the best picture category has seen international (or largely non-English) nominees Minari,...

In the opening moments of 20 Days in Mariupol, Mstyslav Chernov’s chilling account of the siege of the Ukrainian port city, a Russian tank marked with the ominous ‘Z’ swivels its turret toward a hospital. On an upper floor of the building, Chernov and his small team record as the cannon slowly rotates towards them, preparing to fire.
“The tank did shoot the hospital right above the floor we were at,” he says. “It hit between the fifth and sixth floors and a patient was killed with that shell.”
It was one of many times he put his life at risk to show the Russian army’s destruction of the city and its systematic targeting of civilians. He remembers feeling his life was about to end.

When the Oscar nominations were announced last month, it marked a watershed moment for the Documentary Feature category. All the nominated films focused on international subjects – stories from Uganda, Tunisia, Ukraine, India and Chile — and not a single American director was recognized.
Two prominent documentaries by major U.S. filmmakers were among the leading contenders that got snubbed: Matthew Heineman’s American Symphony, and Davis Guggenheim’s Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie.
A headline in a recent Variety piece described the doc community as “reeling” over the nominations. An unnamed documentary producer quoted in the article expressed deep concern over the lack of recognition for American filmmakers and said it was a “giant mistake” that the Documentary branch – which determines the nominees – “did not nominate some of the most successful and most beloved films of the year.”

Five international-themed films are competing for Best Documentary Feature at the Academy Awards this year, stories set in Uganda, Chile, Tunisia, Ukraine, and India. To Kill a Tiger, which has brought director Nisha Pahuja the first Oscar nomination of her career, centers on a poor couple in the Indian state Jharkhand who bravely fought for justice after their teenage daughter became the victim of a brutal sexual assault.
“It literally is this David and Goliath story,” Pahuja said as she appeared at Deadline’s Contenders Film: The Nominees. “We were surprised, I think, by their courage and their resilience, and we kept thinking at some point maybe they were going to cave.”
Ranjit, father of 13-year-old Kiran, faced intense pressure to drop charges against the three young men accused of attacking his daughter.
