Continuing to look outside the traditional TV development process, Fox Broadcasting Co. has inked a first-look deal with Burning Love producer Jonathan Stern and executive/producer Keith Quinn. Under the pact, Fox will have first-look rights to comedy projects developed by Stern and Quinn that are suitable for development on digital platforms, such as Hulu and Roku, with the eventual goal of becoming TV series on Fox, FX, Fxx or other networks. Additionally, Stern and Quinn will provide distribution and producing services (via Stern’s Abominable Pictures) for select projects that The Lonely Island develop under their deal with Fox. “Jon and Keith have a proven track record of making outrageous digital comedy series that have graduated to successful on-air shows,” said Kiliaen Van Rensselaer, Svp of Multi-Platform Programming for Fox. Stern and Quinn’s collaboration began when Stern pitched Burning Love to Quinn at Paramount – the series, executive-produced by Stern,...

CBS has signed talent holding deals with three actors following their performances at January’s Diversity Comedy Showcase, including a deal for a lead role in the pilot for the upcoming “How I Met Your Mother” spinoff “How I Met Your Dad.” As previously reported by TheWrap, Drew Tarver has signed on for a role on “How I Met Your Dad,” playing Todd, the best friend and college roommate of Sally (Greta Gerwig) who is now married to Sally’s brother. The How I Met Your Dad gang is starting to come together. Soon enough, they’ll need a booth to fit them all.
But for now, EW has confirmed that Drew Tarver has been cast as Todd, Sally’s “best friend and roommate from college who is now married to her brother.” Sally is of course played by Greta Gerwig.
Tarver was discovered at a CBS Diversity Showcase in January and signed to a CBS Talent Holding Deal before being cast in the How I Met Your Mother spin-off. He previously worked on Animal Practice and Newsreaders.

The network signed him in a talent holding deal, and he has now been cast as one of the leads of How I Met Your Mother spinoff How I Met Your Dad. In the vein of the original series, Himyd tells the story from a female point of view, that of Sally (Greta Gerwig), and revolves around a new group of friends in New York. TVLine has the scoop on the proposed Supernatural spin-off. The series will follow a new hunter who comes to realize that Chicago is under the control of five monster families and the tensions from their attempts to consolidate power while maintaining the peace. I have to admit, that sounds a lot soapier than I’d expect out of a Supernatural spin-off.
When Adult Swim’s fake news show Newsreaders returns for its second season, it will feature a new host — Alan Tudyk. I’ll miss (previous Newsreaders host) Mather Zickel but Alan Tudyk getting a chance to be goofy is generally a good thing.
Too bad “goody and naked” isn’t likely on a fake news show.
The Newsroom and Smash alum Grace Gummer has joined the cast of CBS’ summer series Extant. The series stars Halle Berry as Molly, an astronaut who returns from earth after a long mission in space.

Role Models helmer David Wain has signed on to direct NBC‘s single-camera comedy pilot Old Soul, co-created by Amy Poehler and starring Natasha Lyonne. The Uni TV-produced project, which Poehler co-created with Josh Bycel and Jonathan Fener, centers on a reformed wild child Nadia (Lyonne) who has a business caring for the elderly and feels she has more in common with her colorful old clients than she does with people her age. Old Soul reunites Wain with Poehler — his Lionsgate feature They Came Together starring Poehler and Paul Rudd just premiered at Sundance. Wain, repped by Wme, Principato-Young and attorney Rick Genow, executive produces Adult Swim’s Newsreaders as well as Childrens Hospital, which he also directs. Adult Swim announced yesterday that the Childrens Hospital spinoff Newsreaders is returning to the network. During the writers’ strike of yonder year, comedian/actor Rob Corddry (The Daily Show, Hot Tub Time Machine) penned a webseries by the name of Childrens Hopsital. Fast forward to 2013 and it is now into its fifth season on Adult Swim, a cult hit and one of the highest rated shows on NetFlix. And no, that is not a grammatical error- I meant Childrens.
A satirical comedy that pokes fun at everything from ER to House to Grey’s Anatomy- and a keen eyed viewer will note that Childrens bares a striking resemblance to Sacred Heart, it is a show radically different from anything else on television in that it discards all pretense of trying to be serious and believable, or even plausible. It’s just a show full of jokes with a hospital in the background.

Last night's premiere of Newsreaders had loads of familiar faces, including Brian Posehn, Missi Pyle, Mather Zickel, and Ray Wise. But the Children's Hospital sorta-spinoff had one surprising guest star: Mad Men's Ken Cosgrove himself, Mr. Aaron Staton. Staton played a grody yet enterprising college student who gets involved in a sex-van porn scheme that turns out to be the work of the American auto industry. (It make sense in context.) Long hair and vocal intonations right out of Jarret's Room really disguise a guy! Come back soon, Ken. We miss your short stories.

The Comic-Con 2012 schedule has now been released in full, and barring any major updates, is set. The blessing and curse of being an attendee is deciding which panels/autograph sessions/special events to attend, when they conflict. And they always do.
For you to see for yourself, below are what we are calling the “headliner” panels; those panels that are taking place in Hall H, Ballroom 20, Room 6Bdf, and the just-next-door Hilton Indigo Ballroom, the four major venues for panels. There are descriptions of each panel as well as the show(s) and/or movie(s) they are there to discuss.
See how many conflicts you might have, or how you might arrange time and space to somehow attend these plus spend every day in the vendors’ Exhibit Hall and chasing zombies in the nearby The Walking Dead Escape. By the way, if you figure that out, Please let us know.
