After complaining that Erick Oh's other film (Heart) was built on a rather obvious meaning, I guess it was only fair that he force me to eat my words with this film because here if there is a meaning then it may well be simple but it was lost on me! The opening shot of a simple apple suggests maybe more accessible fare than Heart – perhaps even something that fits with his work with Pixar, however it quickly becomes nothing of the sort. With interlinking characters and a style similar to Heart's characters, the apple is stripped down and eaten by creatures that come from within it, morphing and changing with a large fish at the top of it which then is stripped to the bones and ultimately only a core of the apple remains.
Perhaps there is something in here about how we are destroying the earth by feeding on it? But I'm stretching with that. What I do know is that the surreal delivery is fun to watch and there does seem to be some inspiration from Dali and others of his ilk as clocks, fish and other items show up in this short animation. As a moving surrealist piece of art then it is worth a look because as that it does engage, but ultimately it left me wondering what I just watched. The only answer I could find was "someone with a lot of animating talent doing their own thing" and it is for this aspect that the film is best enjoyed – but just don't expect it to be anything other than a very short surreal experience.
