I don't get the hate on this episode. It's 24 mins of clever and thought provoking ideas, which is what we all like about this series. It wasn't a gut punch emotional insight episode that we occasionally get but I don't want those every episode anyway.
There were lots of clever ways of looking at this weeks concept piece based around the self referential nature of writing a tv script, which I concede is a bit niche and specific to the writer's world, and insider knowledge and all that, but they did take it a few more levels than before. There were good jokes in this and if you're a "creative writing coach" who fails to see or acknowledge that then you're probably not what you say, or not good at it.
Yes they've address meta and self referential things before, but please do tell me where you've seen a story with characters specifically related to technical terms for script writing techniques before (and yeah, that was bordering on pretentious, but it was still funny). Tell me where you've seen gags about writers living in their offices, or jokes about the poor quality of their own writing, (motivation is his motivation?) etc etc. Please watch just about any other show and come back and tell us again about how bad this episode was written. You may have been spoiled.
They meta-ed the meta out of it, I'm hoping they come up with the idea of it when Facebook decided to nick that word as their brand name, and it was just done as a p1sstake of that, but I'm ok with it just being a thought piece on the nature of script writing and second guessing yourself.
When this show gets dumb, that's when I'll start in with the scathing reviews, but at the moment it's head and shoulders above the level of most tv and deserves respect for putting some brain into their content, they could just leave it at pew pew pew fights and one liners and get a decent sized audience.
