clever ideas
Rob-O-Cop29 November 2022
I don't get the hate on this episode. It's 24 mins of clever and thought provoking ideas, which is what we all like about this series. It wasn't a gut punch emotional insight episode that we occasionally get but I don't want those every episode anyway.

There were lots of clever ways of looking at this weeks concept piece based around the self referential nature of writing a tv script, which I concede is a bit niche and specific to the writer's world, and insider knowledge and all that, but they did take it a few more levels than before. There were good jokes in this and if you're a "creative writing coach" who fails to see or acknowledge that then you're probably not what you say, or not good at it.

Yes they've address meta and self referential things before, but please do tell me where you've seen a story with characters specifically related to technical terms for script writing techniques before (and yeah, that was bordering on pretentious, but it was still funny). Tell me where you've seen gags about writers living in their offices, or jokes about the poor quality of their own writing, (motivation is his motivation?) etc etc. Please watch just about any other show and come back and tell us again about how bad this episode was written. You may have been spoiled.

They meta-ed the meta out of it, I'm hoping they come up with the idea of it when Facebook decided to nick that word as their brand name, and it was just done as a p1sstake of that, but I'm ok with it just being a thought piece on the nature of script writing and second guessing yourself.

When this show gets dumb, that's when I'll start in with the scathing reviews, but at the moment it's head and shoulders above the level of most tv and deserves respect for putting some brain into their content, they could just leave it at pew pew pew fights and one liners and get a decent sized audience.

The meta overload
strong_belwas12 December 2022
Personally, I can only take a certain amount of meta while still being engaged in the story. When characters repeatedly tell you that what's happening isn't real, but just a story, you inevitably lose all the stakes. Really, this is something that can happen in any art form, if you keep deconstructing it, you eventually end up with nothing.

Of course, being what it is, this episode brings up this very point. Rick says something along the lines of "meta works in a comment here or there, but if you base a whole story on it, it breaks down". When characters blatantly point out the problems with the story they're in, at best it comes across as self-deprecating, and at worst, as obnoxious and irritating. What it doesn't do, is fixing the problem. It's just the writer saying, "I know this is flawed but I'm doing it anyway", or maybe "I know what you're going to dislike about this, so I'm saying it first to get ahead of you".

At its best, Rick and Morty gives you funny jokes and an engaging story, this had one of those things. The jokes carry the episode and make it worth watching, (the Self-Referential Six was a personal highlight) even though it's very hard to care about anything that is happening.

Great episode.
correiocnunes23 November 2022
Funny episode, well thought, amusing and it's a good thing about this show, crazy plots and sci-fi insane sequences. Not the most original episode, but entertaining! But I came here to comment just because of the wining "fans" here. You guys are never satisfied, just waiting for the episode to come out to make negative comments, and being bullies. What do you want? Such negative people here, probably bringing personal issues to a cartoon show that is by far one of the funniest, original and entertaining I've ever seen. Some say they will not watch anymore, please do that and leave the show alone!

I don't understand you people
APolygons2-2575325 November 2022
This is my 4th favorite episode of the entire show.

And one of the only 4 that I rated a 10/10.

There are so many genuinely smart ideas and I personally was laughing my ass off through out the entire episode.

From the previously on being one of the coolest openings to an episode of a show I have seen, to the commentary on the very structure of story telling, to using story elements as characters, and so, so, so much more.

If you know anything about writing, you should love this.

I've seen a few say it's too meta, as if that's suppose to be a critical complaint.

Explain to me why that's a problem. Some say because it stops being funny, which is subjective and I personally found this to be one of the funniest episodes. Some say it's trying too hard to be smart... which... it is, but they never explain why it isn't working.

Like, you can't say something is trying to be X positive thing as a complaint, without saying why it isn't that.

Rick and morty has always tried to be smart, that isn't new, tell me why you think it isn't that.

You wanted adventure? You wanted originality? You waned cool concepts?

This episode has all of them. At this point people are just complaining for the sake of complaining. S4 wasn't as good as the first 3, and the entire middle section of S5 was rick and morty at it's worst.

But this season has been great, and this was imo it's best episode by far.

This episode is so genius it's hard to comprehend
johnnybravoctk21 December 2022
Let me preface this, that I am not a literary writer or that well versed in narrative structure (I'm just a Professor in science and art), or have any inclination on how difficult this show or any content is to create these days. However, watching them break down through actual characters the parts of a script for something like Rick and Morty in an acutal Rick and Morty episode is so mind bending that I'm basically left here awestruck. As well, it fully discloses the struggles Harmon and Roiland have for supplying funny, creative, orginal content to satisfy their target audience but also themselves. I see some low marks for this episode and I'm not usually one to perch myself on a high steep of IQ, but frankly 'you seriously didn't get it'. Sorry, that's just how I feel on this one. That opening intro is one for the ages too. As soon as I think they might be getting apathetic with making this show, they drop this masterpiece that hits a new level of intelligence required.

If you didn´t like it- you didn´t get it
kmirandakondo26 November 2022
I don´t know much about writing and storytelling (To be honest I´m a doctor) -but this episode is a masterpiece.

Back in 2018 when Justin Roiland renewed their contract for another 70 episodes - I really began to worry.

How can you go at the same pace over such amount of episodes? I mean, if you´re literally open to blow your show´s continuity every single episode - you´ll find some troubles one day. (Just remember how many times Rick destroyed his own reality lol.)

But Harmon is a writing genius - and he always forces himself to go the hard way. This episode goes far beyond this show - it probably is the most Rick and Morty episode and it isn't about Rick and Morty. This is about Harmon- a super ambitious writer finding his own limits and challenging himself. You should crack laughing.

Charlie Kaufman Rick & Morty, a meta masterpiece
marc-shellard22 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
An amazing sequel to the story train episode which is a fantastic episode from season 4. Absolutely hilarious and fully establishes that Rick and Morty are aware that we exist in our own dimension as "the viewers". Loads of fun character work.

It's genuinely one of the most meta episodes of television that currently exists.

I also agree with the writer that 'back to season 1' critiques are not well founded. Sure seasons 4 & 5 had some episodes that were below par for Rick & Morty but they also had some of the best episodes. Seasons 1 & 2 had plenty of weaker stories.

Season 6 has not missed and I'm here for it. Can't wait for this 3 part Rick Prime arc!

Filler, but clever filler.
declantill22 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Back a season or so ago, an episode came out from Rick and Morty which revolved around a story train, Dan Harmons writing concept and a character called Story Lord, and I, for one, LOVED it.

I saw it as a meta middle finger to the obnoxious fans begging for more weird stories like that of pickle Rick, a real dissection and expose on how silly those stories can get etc.

It was clever, whilst balancing the key theme of having a plot, that's what's important here.

Now we come onto this episode.

This episode to me really felt like a self indulgent journey from the point of view of Dan Harmon, like as if this episode was an episode the cast and crew of Rick and Morty had made him for his birthday, it's the type of story he LOVES.

Whilst not only cheapening the lovely story with the story train, this episode lacks a real plot, it's just a big pat on the back to writers (Mostly Harmon) who sit there and go wow, that's clever.

Now don't get me wrong, some of this episode is quite frankly amazing. I love television that surprises me, gets me thinking etc.

The things to pick up on like Checkov's guns, Dues Ex Machina tropes was fantastic and when the 6 appeared on screen I was in awe to be honest, as a writer myself (Not a good one) I can certainly understand how easy it'd be to get excited over names like Miss Lead, Mr Twist, and the brilliant named Brett/Rhett Con.

That's the problem with this episode though, it goes for all these highly contrived concepts but doesn't deliver much of plot.

It's like 25 minutes of ideas around the same topic sewn together. Like that Joseph Campbell thing, WHO knows him? Well, Dan Harmon, he based his story circle around Joseph Campbells theories, but WHO ELSE would get that?

It's a bit tiring, it ruins older episodes but does deliver a interesting set of characters I guess.

Watch it not for a rick and morty story but to see a rick and morty writing process.

I think it speaks for itself
ericstevenson21 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This episode features Rick and Morty catching a creature known as "Previous Leon". They manage to get through the intro. Rick literally travels through the fourth wall. This is a follow up to the Season 4 episode "Never. Ricking Morty". The villain Story Lord is back and he has Jesus on his side. Rick and Morty team up with Previous Leon to stop him.

Story Lord confronts the writer who wants to give him a motivation. Rick and Morty go to save Ret Con, but have to thwart the Self-Referential Six. Ret Con (or Brett Caan) turns out to be villainous. They meet up with Joseph Campbell so they can convince the writer to stop Story Lord. Rick defeats him, but the creator has to finish him off. For me to critique this episode (other than star ratings) would be pointless as it does that on its own. ****

Back after a brief Hiatus, and back with a bang, episode seven season six of "Rick And Morty" was and decent, difficult, smart return.

Rick (Justin Roiland) and Morty (Justin Roiland) find themselves dragged through the fourth wall, literally, into a battle with the returning Storylord (Paul Giamatti). They fight through the nature of the show itself, and against evil storytelling tropes before an ally, Joseph Campbell (Dan Harmon) sets them back on track.

It's actually a bit difficult to describe the story of this one, as it's a bit of a whirlwind of characters appearing and disappearing. What it is though, is clever. I've said in other reviews for the show that I like it when "R&M" tell a story that only they can do, and this is certainly one of those. From the very first moment, and a "Previously on Rick and Morty" that starts to unravel pretty quickly, through amended credits and right through to the post episode tag, there's very few shows that could make an episode as Meta as this, and even fewer that would take the time to take shots at the complaints of the audience at the same time.

Maybe though, that manic storytelling does come at the expense of some genuine humour, with the Self-referential six feeling very much like a first draft idea that should have been dropped when it didn't quite pan out to enough characters (Continuity errors aren't storytelling devices) particularly when they shift to being unused in the second half of the episode. I'd also say that, despite that uniqueness of the premise, in delivery it felt like several other episodes, even ones from this season (the fortune cookie episode, in particular).

I'd still say that overall I enjoyed it though and it's exactly the sort of clever storytelling I'm looking for from the show, I'd just like it to be a tiny bit funnier though.

I'm gonna sound like a bit of a jerk, but...
Trey_Trebuchet3 December 2022
...come on folks. Rick and Morty isn't THAT bad. Season 5 had some pretty average (or bad) episodes, but it also had some bangers. This episodes isn't anywhere near the mediocrity of some of those S5 episodes in my opinion.

I personally had a blast from beginning to end. This was seriously a laugh-a-minute episode for me. As someone who loves meta-related stuff and has tried writing before, I thought the humor and characters felt pretty spot-on. I'm confused about how people thought this was either unwatchable or boring... I don't know, if I'm just an idiot because I like this episode, so be it. I had fun.

I thought just about all of the jokes landed, the meta stuff was quick and, in my opinion, the characters (Previous Leon) made the concept feel like it's own thing. I personally think this is one of the best in the season.

I don't know what the writters triying to.
IBlackI3 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
It is an episode that again stays simple, the premise is good, yes, the episode is entertaining, but it is not something that we have not seen in the truman show or the Twilight Zone, I think it stays in being another episode that breaks the 4th wall and does not encourage more because it does not want to evolve the formula of this series, There's a lot of action yes, but I feel like it's a mockery of your viewers in some way.

I think it could be explored more, the story of this episode is interesting, it would be more interesting to know why of the secondary ones in this episode, why they do it, how they were created, if there is a plot twist and it would have been great that the 24 minutes focused on that topic, which they use as an excuse so that in the end it stays in action and unnecessary deaths.

The embodiment of the worst of Rick and Morty.
ckingbell12 December 2022
Rick and Morty is known for being clever. Dan Harmon and his team are obviously clever people, but this need to push back against "canon" is so tiresome. Why attempt to villainize something as foundational as continuity?

"Everything is chaos!" Says the writer who writes every episode according the the character arch of "the hero's journey?" Who teaches that very concept in writing lectures? My point is that series has only been successful because of continuity! Continuity of character, format, and style. But we the audience are apparently soooo dumb for enjoying continuity of larger plot lines or seasonal character developments? I know for myself that sometimes the only thing that has let me endure some of these more cringe or lazily vulgar episodes IS the larger developments that happen through the series (evil Morty, Birdman, Rick's past, etc...). But then episodes like this spit on the very audience and systems that has given the series life?

Is this really were you want to take the series, Dan? To the grave of deconstructionism?

Y'all wouldn't know a good comedy episode of any show even at its best. Could yall write better? No yall couldn't. This was a perfect episode
tydye-2984921 December 2022
Okay I don't get any of yall. Listen man. It's become like a new wave or trend if you'll call it that to call all new movies, TV series or new music albums from a loved artist who wrote and performed their brand new art and they all call it not good or mid compared to earlier episodes or previous music. I just don't get why it's become a thing all this hating...when yall could never write better. This has been the best season next to the first 3 seasons. Fr if not it might be the best season so far that's out bruh. Love it and I'm a big fan that thought Season 5 was really not that good like everyone else says..season 4 was just okay. But guys this episode might be the greatest episode ever released in a while guys. I died laughing the whole time. The breaking the 4th wall was so funny more than other episodes when they tried in this show or others.

The whole episode was so funny man. "Jesus baned me morty" "having Jesus come at us, have you not seen south park" the whole previously on beginning was amazingly smart and funny. Being dragged through the opening credits was cool, original and funny. Some of the bad guys powers were cool too

But my favorite joke to come at these weird critics was when he said 7 critics were gona watch and basically say they don't like it when they were gona say that without watching to begin with, with how they explained it. This new wave and trend is toxic and wrong, yall ain't actually paying attention dude...or not listening to the song right. But my very favorite joke was when dude said " when you get home, go back to doing some classic adventures like in Season 1" rick replys to all you and the hardcore fans that complain "I'm so sick of that note. What does that even mean!", yall complain bout every episode but I don't get it, if all the episodes from Season 4 or 5 to the episode now are so bad...... then just why do yall keep watching the show if it never gets better or shows 1 good episode so I feel like maybe yall are Cappimg. Ppl love hating on a very successful show. When it reaches that point ppll tend to do the opposite and want to act different just like when a horror movie is said to be so good and scary. They hear that. Watch it then then laugh the whole movie, making fun of it to not be scared like they really are.

Ppl want to act different to be different from.the majority. Like I said disagreeing and going the opposite way of the majority of which way they take it is like this new trend going on and it's just so dumb. But that's all I needed to say. This was the best episode in a long time.

Obfuscating to look clever
Grey_rainbow22 November 2022
There is a big difference between clever and obfuscated, and this episode is more of the latter than the former. It is so needlessly obfuscated that you could lose your patience easily. I did, I had to pause a few times to just hear what Rick was saying. That's a bad sign. It means the writers are running out of ideas and now just want to appear clever. The meta-ness in the episode was pretty high and at some point, it was so meta that it stopped being fun. After seeing meta fourth wall breaking things a gazillion times, it no more looks like a clever tool to most of us. Hope the show gets better hereafter and that the writers stop cramming clever-sounding empty long dialogues.

Aaand some more mediocre Episodes again
loumizhu23 November 2022
Rick and Morty has gone down the drain since a long time ago, but they can still come with some good episodes here and there. And sometimes the action and sci fi stuff makes up for the total non-sense , they are spewing. So I can watch them when I have time to waste. But , there is one of these episodes, that are so bad and so up their asses that you lose your patience.

This episode is Totally one of them. Let's be meta about meta, by being extra meta while hating meta ...( insert some more extra meta in a sentence ) When the writer starts talking about himself, his gimmicks, about how he does his work, or mocking himself and his ideas . It a very bad sign. Also the authors try to hide this after realizing it with some more non sense , to not let the audience figure it out. Coz you know, they are so smart these authors. And you the audience ......

Worst episode by far
garrett-lalone25 November 2022
This is by FAR the worst episode. We didn't laugh even once. It's an insult to the fans. Literally don't even watch it. I hope people are punished for making this. It's not interesting, or funny, or watchable, or sensible, or clever. Don't watch it, or waste your time. Don't think you're intelligent for giving it a high rating. At the time of posting this it had like an 8.2, which is stupid because it's not worth anybody's time. I can't believe it was even approved. If this is Dan Harmon being a little B again, please just stop, Dan. It's not cool to act like a whiny little B kid and make us all suffer for this bs. Grow up, Dan.

So bad, it's unwatchable.
pavlomir23 November 2022
2 episodes! That's how far this show can last before they run out of ideas do episode like this one. Meta bad, bad beyond this world bad. So disconnected that every 5 seconds you have no idea what's the episode about. Try it, skip 5 sec and try to make sense of what you are seeing.

The lack of consistency makes every other bad TV show in the real life looks good next to this. The worst of Family guy and South Park is better than this, even the Kardashians make more sense than this episode. Full Meta Jackrick went full Matrix 4 in the way how self aware of how bad it can be. Just stop it, try your best, get new writers or guest writers. The flood of 9/10 reviews give fake expectation of quality that isn't there. You can't trick the audience with few good episodes per season and fill the gaps with whatever popular culture references you can come up with.

this is just a bad episode
johnmerricksmistresses23 November 2022
This episode is not even interesting, none of the jokes land, and they are honestly at this point being so freaking annoying. I don't even know why I keep watching this show, waiting for it to be fun like it used to but I don't think it will.

It's a shame because I would have loved to see a bunch of episodes with good writing like it used to, but know it's just a bunch of poorly written jokes that only show how bitter the writers are for some reason. It would be great if they can make a good show again but it would be too late.

This is the last rick and morty season I will be watching. They're mediocre at best.

The dumbest episode EVER
eldare-859-35567022 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The train episode was boring, but this... this takes the cake as the dumbest, laziest, mess of an episode.

This episode makes the dragon episode look amazing. What a train wreck. A meta train wreck.

RM is rehashing old trash and the fan boys eat it up.

I have never seen such a lazy excuse for an episode. The jokes are lame af!

This episode was written while constipated on a toilet. Useless fan boys give it a 10/10. I give it a 1/10, just because I can't give it a zero!

It's time to fire your writers and hire some better bums to write a decent episode, like the damn dragon episode!

Story Lord sucks!!!!

Appallingly bad
sfkgczbn1 December 2022
I am an English teacher and creative writing coach, so I don't want to hear any "you don't get it because you're not smart/creative enough" criticisms. A previous reviewer literally did the "to be fair, you have to have a very high IQ" bit. I made an account specifically to post about how lazy and boring this episode was. Being meta just for the sake of being meta and breaking the fourth wall hasn't been funny for years, and it's especially egregious when R&M has done these exact jokes before. I watched this episode through the cracks of my fingers because I was so embarrassed on behalf of the writers. "Haha, look, we're making jokes about how this show is overly-self-referential" is only funny once or twice. Not when you do it every single season.

One of the worst yet..
moviebuff-tony25 November 2022
This season is blah.. but there have been some seasons in the past were I thought one or two episodes were not so good but this has been almost all of them so far, but the latest in particular is not just unfunny and boring but it's lacking in any creativity. They've almost done exactly the same thing in previous episodes and it wasn't entertaining this time.

It is Much like if they were to do another dragon episode but with a lochness monster instead. Sure, it would be new and original but not quite. Of course as a long time fan of the show I hope this is a temporary glitch and it will improve from here on out.

eh~ Warning: Spoilers
Could it be possible somebody told this writer to do a thing, he thought it was stupid, and then spent the episode trashing what he was told to do? Feels a bit like it.

This episode was creative and had some interesting characters and new ideas although personally I'm not a fan of the meta episodes in general, I just don't get them, presumably because I'm not a writer. The end of this episode features a moment of clarity where the writer character realises he can't write about being a writer, but the inclusion of these meta episodes lean toward the opposite message.

Regardless, the beginning of the episode starts toward an interesting direction, talking about the idea of "previously on", introducing this bug creature who embodies the idea of "previously on" flashbacks. He sucks you and you start flashbacking, and apparently it's an awful creature that must be destroyed. Huh? It could be smart if there were more depth to it but it feels like the writers want to take a jab at people who are stuck in the past for rick and morty and prefer the earlier episodes? Who knows, it's not clear, extremely vague and feels like they're trying to send a message instead of make us laugh. He's not a relevant character though, and neither are all the ones you will meet during the rest of the episode.

Some sort of Jesus character is introduced, but he's the kind that "doesn't have a god". "I work alone", he says to napoleon. Eh. This character was groan inducing and not enjoyable. In fact this entire episode has this "ohh, heyy, we're so edgy and everyone in this episode is so sarcastic because we know how stupid this is which is what makes it funny" layer to it, which got old quite fast. It's like the person who wrote this was assigned this task to write a certain type of story, thought the idea was stupid, then proceeded to trash the idea during the story.

The self referential six were by contrast interesting and grounded in something most people are familiar with; the superhero parody. Mr twist's bit was the only dialogue of this episode I enjoyed, it was silly, funny, clever, and he was the only character who fit the vibe of this episode. "Brett con", a guy who shapes reality with his words, was also interesting, but his inclusion really breaks down the rules of television, as if they weren't broken already, and his potential wasn't fully utilized leaving you feeling more empty and uninterested in the episode.

Then, the episode goes back to random meta things happening. Story lord saps the world's motivation, Story lord meets his creator, rick and morty meet joseph campbell, random flashbacks that didn't happen (or DID they?). Morty becomes pregnant, because of the previously on guy. What? What was the point of it all. Not one single laugh was given, nor amused eyebrow raised.

This story was all over the place and it just didn't work for me. Shoutout to Mr Twist though, you were killed off too soon.

waste of time
talllwoood1318 December 2022
What an awful episode. Seriously how did this get made? I don't know why this isn't on a DVD as a bonus episode that wasn't good enough for tv. I mean It's pretty bad that they are even taking shots at themselves for an episode that wasn't very good and then expanding on a character who wasn't interesting to begin with. That is what this filler episode feels like. They had a good string of episodes from episode 3 to 6 and now we got this trash again. The lazily named characters and all their gimmicks reminds me why I'll never watch those over rated marvel movies.

The story is awful and I don't even think one of those people who have too much time on their hands who reach and reach to make their second rate theories stick would find this entertaining. I ended up turning it off. All the stuff they mention in the beginning of the episode make for far better stories than what we're given. This just screams we got X amount of weeks, come on guys, pitch anything. I say it a lot but this is why we need more than a year per season for this show so we don't end up with garage like this.

Pfft
aljammy-1155219 July 2023
Whilst I am very critical of this episode, I'm a big enough person to say this episode DID have some clever and funny ideas, but that's it, that's where the pros end and the long LONG list of cons begin. For starters, being Meta for the sake of being meta just isn't funny or clever, most of the episode just goads that type of viewer who may want a little bit of story by just constantly being all snarky like "oh wow you actually WANT a cohesive plot, what a loser teehehe ahaha" it just comes off as smarmy and big headed. It's like one long rant, similar in vein to someone leaving twitter.

And it's a shame because the ideas could've been great, but if, and only if the writers could've just gotten off of their high horse for one second and stopped acting superior then they could've had something great (like the story train episode which managed to be meta and funny at the same time) instead you have a bunch of solitary ideas glued together with "hey guys, guys look we're being meta and stuff, aren't we clever?" Like legit look away for just a second during this episode and you will completely lose track of the plot, it is THAT bad.
