- TriviaAccording to Janet Shprintz, in Variety (April 2, 1998), actor Rip Torn successfully sued Dennis Hopper for punitive damages arising from defamatory responses Hopper gave to Jay Leno during this episode. The trial court apparently ruled that Hopper's remarks were false and defamatory, and that Torn could appeal for punitive damages. By 1998, Torn had won his appeal and could collect his damages. During this appearance, Hopper claimed Torn was dismissed from "Easy Rider" after assaulting him with a knife. According to Variety, the court's opinion confirms that Hopper appeared on this episode to promote the movie "Speed." Asked by host Jay Leno how Jack Nicholson came to be cast in a lead role in "Easy Rider," Hopper, who co-wrote and directed the film, said Torn had been considered for the Nicholson role, but he and Torn "had a little problem." Hopper said Torn pulled a knife on him at dinner because Torn thought he was being cut out of the picture. Torn asserted later that he passed on "Easy Rider" because of previous commitments and low pay. After the original trial judge determined that Hopper had lied, Rip Torn apparently demanded a retraction of the comments, which Hopper refused. In approving Torn's punitive damages claim, the appeal court noted this refusal and that Hopper later admitted that the dispute was not about script changes on "Easy Rider." Hopper stuck by his story that Torn had pulled the knife on him
