Admittedly, I'm a fan-boy of the Ricky Gervais, Steve Merchant and Karl Pilkington gang; a fan since their early Xfm radio broadcasts. However, there is absolutely no bias in this as I say that 'Derek' is a beautiful mockumentary comedy drama. Those who dislike the show will undoubtedly draw misconceptions purely from the name Gervais, probably before they even see the show. Gervais has shown, again, that he has a brilliant talent for observational comedy, paying attention to the psychology and philosophy that defines the characters in the show. There is no cruelty in this; as he says, nobody complains about Mr. Bean, who is clearly more 'retarded' (for want of a better word) than Derek. Derek is a simple man and the show conveys an empathy towards the people we see every day and feel pity for. There's brushes of true sadness amongst the innocent comedy. Some touching moments from just a pilot episode and already I want to see more of this. Undoubtedly, there will be very close-minded people who will never be able to draw the funny side out of a show like this and will whinge about it. To those, I say the whole joke is on you and the best thing is, you'll never know why.
