MUCH better than the IMDB score
truphane3 September 2018
I'm glad I gave this a shot. It's well produced and very well acted. The story is bizarre, but inventive and not impossible. Within its bounds, the plotting and writing is very good, with all the action holding together. That alone is an achievement these days.

A black comedy, exactly as advertised - and a pretty good one too.

People do crazy stuff sometimes.
Bigchin3327 August 2018
Honestly I found it a nice break from the usual morally upright standing movies to see what people can be like sometimes when pushed pass a cetrain point and begin to spiral. Loved Danny McBride in this. His best I think.

Surprisingly Funny and Entertaining
meanmrslinky20 January 2020
I wasn't expecting much going into this movie, but I was ultimately pleased with it overall. Danny McBride is hilarious as the angry kidnapping client, and Rosemarie DeWitt is great as the real estate agent who is kidnapped. If you're a fan of dark humor, give it a chance. There's some hilariously shocking scenes that will have you gasping, which will be followed by a burst of laughter. Watching McBride's character dig himself deeper and deeper into a hole throughout the film was surprisingly entertaining and funny. I gave it a 6/10 because the ending is weak. I don't think I'll ever give it a second watch, but I still enjoyed it overall. All in all it's just a silly, dark comedy thriller worth a watch.

A pleasant surprise.
trentyjohnson26 August 2018
Didn't come in expecting much from this movie, but it seemed to be a well executed dark comedy that didn't take itself too seriously and for the most part kept a proper balance with being the right amount of absurd. Not a fan of Danny McBride in general, but he was the proper casting choice for this role.

Starts out alright but goes downhill with too many stupid actions by protagonists
ash-572239 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Danny McBride is great in this. The other actors aren't bad, but their characters are very badly written. All of them make unbelievably stupid mistakes over and over in order to allow McBride's character to continue on his rampage. After a point it stops being entertaining and just comes across as very poor / lazy writing. By the end I was rooting for the antagonist just because the protagonists had wasted so many golden opportunities up to that point. Decent for a rental. Not worth buying.

This was a funny movie. I'm not sure what everyone expects from a Danny McBride movie but it had great direction, production, and a decent script. There was some solid black humor and McBride was funny as hell. And yes, if you've been to AZ in the past ten years it is so true.

A surprisingly good dark comedy
Gordon-1117 September 2018
This film tells the story of a disgruntled man who goes to the estate agent to complain about his house purchase. Things soon spiral out of control.

The plot is actually very suspenseful, and I just could not figure out how it's going to end. It is engaging and captivating. It is great to see many famous faces in it as well. It exceeded all my expectations, and I enjoyed every minute of it.

Amateurish and exhausting
spencergrande630 April 2018
This is one of those "A Simple Plan" type scenarios where an accident escalates into a heinous catastrophe over the course of a bunch of small steps. It's just not nearly funny or clever enough. It all feels very forced and amateurish and is exhausting by the end.

Not really a comedy, not quite a serious drama.

Warning: Spoilers
Yah yah, I like Black Comedys. I do. But this doesnt quite get there.

It starts out fine enough but moved from 'dark' to just 'ugly sinister' fairly quickly. Its one of the aspects of our culture that violence among males is more acceptable and understandable, violence among women can also be, but to a lesser level, but violence from women unto women just doesn't work much for me, and I suspect many viewers.

This is mostly a two-person play with all the others merely being side characters. A brutal careless Danny McBride plays his part well enough, but doesnt seem to take anything much seriously, others lives, his fate, the movie itself? Rosemarie DeWitt is a standout and does a great job within the limits of the script, thoroughly convincing.

One of its underlying messages is how the 2009 crisis devastated peoples lives and how this could impact on their choices. However this message is thin, subtle and not well explored.

The main problem is, as I said, the violence feels bad, not funny, and the jokes are thin and loaded almost entirely in the first 30minutes. After which its the same standard creepy 'bad person hunts the good guys' plot, sans humour.

Where it really falls apart is probably when a 14 year old child is kidnapped and threatened with being executed, then has her father that she cares for shot to death outside the house she is being hunted in. Does that sound funny? Cos it didnt seem like it to me.

Was it watchable, yeah, especially for Rosemarie, who as a bonus to lechers spends the last 30 minutes running around in a bra. She's a good actress with our without a blouse, that seemed a touch unnecessary but I guess realistic as well. Did the movie seem to have a clear idea of what it was and where it was going? No. Started out dark comedy, ended as a b-grade horror.

Dark comedy
nicolaperrin29 April 2021
It's a dark comedy but it's a bit too dark for me. I started off laughing and loved how quirky it was, but I did get a bit bored I have to admit. I'd definitely say it's worth watching if you like dark comedies, but if you're not into that kind of thing normally then I wouldn't recommend it. It's not something I'd normally watch. It's different though so I can't score it lower than a 6 as I do like the originality of it and the acting is really good.

Good start but...
simonbachofen26 August 2018
The movie had a good start, nice setting and is generally well made and has good acting, but the last third was a bit weak...not horroble but no masterpiece either.

Not for the masses
If Kevin Hart makes you laugh and you need the CGI of the Avengers to be entertained I'm afraid I can't recommend it. This one is more about subtle humor with believable violence.

Enjoyed the scenery of rarely filmed ares, not the usual LA/NYC surrounding. Some good shots of the vast landscape. Could have been better if the characters didn't commit the usual movie sins.

Title should've been .. "What the heck is happening - Arizona" :D
Aktham_Tashtush25 August 2018
Warning: Spoilers
First of, I love Danny McBride and his type of messed up comedy ,, the movie is really good .. the plot is genuine and the screenplay had A lot of Thrill mixed with the "I don't give a damn" comedy ,, you start with just a simple accident and then end up with a massacre ,,

the minute i heard Luke Del Tredici name ,, Brooklyn Nine-Nine popped in my head , I was like he worked in that project, then gotta watch this one..

A lot of people might hate it , Oh they will ... but don't let that prevent you from enjoying a nice fresh comedy action thrill.

Cast wise, as i said love Danny McBride he's the type of characters that is made to make a mess .. wished Seth Rogen got more time in there they both are hilarious ,, Elizabeth Gillies also did well .

It is Recommended ,, forget all these 4/3's reviews.

Has the movie industry lost the art of story telling?

Same plot as other chase the victim films that have been made before. The only comedy is the film overall...

Come on Hollywood! Make some decent movies please.

There's more than meets the eye in this one.
swedumdid-2356519 October 2018
Is it a comedy? No. Ok, maybe a black comedy. Is it a suspense? No. Although it does have suspenseful scenes. Is it scary? In a way. It's hard to put one label on this film. You start out thinking that it's a comedy because of who's in it, but when a man is hanging from a ceiling fan, you quickly realize it's at least a little more. Soon you realize that even though you may have laughed or at least been amused a few times, there's something scary about this film. Add a couple more kills and a few more laughs and you're rooting for the co-lead to escape her danger and it's a little thrilling. If that was it, you could say this movie was entertaining but there's more. Something deeper. The movie is dramatic in the sense that it hints at the absurdities of the American dream. People have been sold lake front property in Arizona, and when they realize there's no lake, they've lost their cool. It also takes humorous shots at our modern day attention span, and the way teenagers treat their parents. The whole time, the actors do a good job of bringing it all together. All in all, this movie is well worth seeing. Despite negative reviews, this movie is a possible future cult classic that I'm happy to have seen.

Really???? Others gave this a review higher than a 1?
harlanmeister7 May 2020
Plot line was really dumb. All this movie had in it was indiscriminate killing. The killer never reloaded his weapon even after firing way more than 6 shots. Completely unbelievable...the only reason I watched the movie was because I was hoping for some comedy which never happened. I was way disappointed...

Not what I expected
sparkerd17 November 2020
New Danny McBride fan, saw this and thought it would be in line with his other movies. I got the dark comedy at first, but as a few other reviewers stated, the second half seemed to be a completely different movie. I would have given it a 9 if it had remained consistent. Love comedy, horror, horror/comedy, i.e. Dale and Tucker. This felt like halfway through, a new director came in saying, no we'll keep the first half but this is what I want to do now. Loved the desolate feel of the gated community and the confusion of her ex trying to find her amongst so many similar named communities. All the actors were great, and again, loved the look and feel of the location. Will probably watch again as background noise while doing something else.

Waste of time
roxlerookie2 September 2018
I watched this because of the trailer. It looked dark, stupid and funny. I thought it would be enjoyable. The first half of the movie is consistent with what I expected from the trailer. Not the second half. I didn't ask myself from the outset how the movie should end, and the second half just feels like the director is trying to get to a conclusion, but it's just violent, doesn't make any sense, and, most importantly, absolutely not funny nor enjoyable. Almost felt like 2 different movies. Bottom line, I wish I hadn't wasted my time with this. Just watch the trailer and stop there.

A surprisingly good dark comedy!
Top_Dawg_Critic26 August 2018
Novice director Jonathan Watson makes his 2nd directorial debut and his first full length feature film, and knocks it out of the ballpark!

This is a well written, cast and produced dark comedy with few LOL moments, but you will have a constant grin throughout, especially from the perfectly cast Danny McBride who's performance was outstanding for his character.

He, as well as the great directing along with the perfect cinematography make this film stand out and very entertaining.

The entire premise of the set location (pretty much abandoned gated communities) make this a different type of cat-and-mouse comedy thriller that is enjoyable start to finish. The pacing is great and the length is perfect.

An excellent Sunday hangover popcorn flick! A well deserved 8/10 from me
