Kate Winslet fought with James Cameron over Titanic? ( Photo Credit – Wikimedia )
Kate Winslet dusted off the rumors of a feud with director James Cameron, floating around since the Titanic days. In a candid chat with Variety, the Oscar-winning actress addressed the gossip, revealing how speculation overshadowed her genuine bond with the acclaimed filmmaker. “There’s a part of me that feels almost sad that stupid, speculative Titanic stuff at the time overshadowed my actual relationship with him,” Winslet shared, making it clear that there was never a rift.
While filming Titanic, Winslet’s portrayal of Rose Dewitt Bukater catapulted her to fame but also brought some emotional baggage. Cameron noted, “There was never a rift between us. She had a little postpartum depression when she let go of Rose.” It turns out Winslet dives deep into her characters, and that can leave a mark. Netflix formally greenlit the seven-episode drama in September, having acquired the rights in a bidding war back in 2022. Zoe Kazan — the granddaughter of Elia Kazan, who directed a 1955 feature film based on the novel — and Jeb Stuart (Die Hard, Vikings: Valhalla) are co-showrunners, with Kazan adapting Steinbeck’s book.

Kate Winslet is “very excited to be one year closer to 50,” she said at the Zurich Film Festival. “It’s a very thrilling time!”
“I am not going anywhere, but I don’t really think about legacy as much as I think about how important it is to tell stories and make films. To be someone who always wants to do this job doesn’t just mean playing interesting parts. It’s more than that – it’s about the entire experience.”
As she decided to move into producing with “Lee” – previously, Winslet exec produced the likes of “Mare of Easttown” and “The Regime” – she admitted that these days, “younger actresses absolutely have a voice.”
“For a woman to say ‘No, I’m not comfortable with that’? That didn’t exist. It was better to just be grateful and not complain because ‘nobody likes a girl who complains.’ That has changed,...

Plot: The story of American photographer Lee Miller, a fashion model who became an acclaimed war correspondent for Vogue magazine during World War II.
Review: Operating from the belief that Kate Winslet cannot deliver a bad performance, I went into Lee expecting the acclaimed actress to be excellent. As a surprise to no one, Winslet is astoundingly good in a passion project she has shepherded for almost a decade. At one point, Winslet financed cast salaries out of her own pocket as well as acted with a brutal back injury sustained during filming. While those trials have added to the aura exuded by Lee Miller over the course of the film, Lee is nevertheless a formulaic biopic kept afloat by a stellar cast that includes Alexander Skarsgard, Andy Samberg, Marion Cotillard, Andrea Riseborough, and more. The story still packs an emotional punch with striking historical context from World War II...

Matthias Schoenaerts has landed the role of the antagonist in DC Studios’ upcoming Supergirl. More on the casting below.
James Gunn and Peter Safran are hard at work crafting the new era of DC Studios. Gunn’s own Superman film – simply titled Superman – is heading into cinemas next year and we can expect a Supergirl solo movie a year later.
House Of The Dragon’s Milly Alcock will play the titular hero, and Deadline now reports that Matthias Schoenaerts has been cast as the film’s villain. There’s no official word on who that villain might be, but the film’s script has been adapted from the Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow comic book in which Krem of the Yellow Hill is the main antagonist.
Schoenaerts has been seen in films such as Jacques Audiard’s Rust And Bone, Netflix’s The Old Guard (as pictured at the top of this article) and most recently,...

The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that Belgian actor Matthias Schoenaerts (The Old Guard) will play the lead villain in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow opposite Milly Alcock.
Schoenaerts is taking on the role of Krem of the Yellow Hills. The big bad in Tom King and Billquis Evely's Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic book, Krem kills the father of a young alien girl who then enlists the Maiden of Might on her revenge mission.
The trade reiterates that shooting will begin in the UK next January and this casting is another indication that the upcoming movie will still closely to the comic book it shares a name with.
Schoenaerts most recently starred alongside Kate Winslet in HBO's The Regime. He's also known for appearing in Rust and Bone and Red Sparrow, but Krem will be his most high-profile role to date.

Matthias Schoenaerts is in final negotiations to join the cast of “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” for DC Studios.
He’s being eyed to play the villain opposite “House of the Dragon” actor Milly Alcock, who is starring in the film as the eponymous hero, also known as Kara Zor-El. It’s unclear who Schoenaerts will play, but the villain in the comics is Krem of the Yellow Hills, who encounters Supergirl after he murders the father of a young girl.
Craig Gillespie is directing “Supergirl,” which is slated to release in theaters on June 26, 2026. Plot details haven’t been confirmed, but DC Studio’s co-chairman James Gunn teased that “Woman of Tomorrow” is “much more hardcore” than prior iterations of the character, who is Superman’s cousin.

Belgian actor Matthias Schoenaerts has nabbed the plum villain role in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which Craig Gillespie is directing for DC Studios.
House of the Dragon star Milly Alcock is toplining the superhero feature as Kara Zor-El, the cousin of Superman.
The feature is inspired by the Tom King and Bilquis Evely comic and will depart from the earnest take on the character audiences may know from the CW Supergirl series. The villain in the comic was Krem of the Yellow Hills, the man who kills the girl’s father. Supergirl is drawn into the conflict when he injured everyone’s favorite superpet, Krypto.

Actor Kate Winslet was exposed to many uncomfortable conditions while filming James Cameron’s physically taxing Titanic. But Winslet’s experiences on the film’s set came in handy while shooting another movie years later.

Winslet collaborated alongside Alan Rickman for the second time in her career in the 2014 period piece A Little Chaos. The project saw Winslet playing a female gardener tending to the gardens of royalty in the 1600s. While filming, there was a scene in the feature where her character had to fix a flooding stream. This required Winslet, who was pregnant at the time, to immerse herself in water. But she asserted that the scene wasn’t as hard to shoot as some might’ve thought. Especially since Winslet took control of the scene entirely.

The second season of HBO's Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon wrapped up this past weekend, and we'll likely be waiting until 2026 for more episodes. However, HBO isn't going to let us go that long without another visit to Westeros. It's readying another Game of Thrones prequel, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, to air sometime next year.
Set decades after the events of House of the Dragon but decades before the events of Game of Thrones, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is based on the Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas by author George R.R. Martin. This first, six-episode season is based on the first of those novellas, The Hedge Knight. Here's HBO's official description:
A century before the events ofGame of Thrones, two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros … a young, naïve but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg. Set in...

Updated with the Latest: First–look footage has been released for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms alongside HBO’s upcoming slate of shows such as The Last of Us, The White Lotus and And Just Like That.
In April 2023, HBO announced it had ordered the show, tentatively titled A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight. Ordered to series in April 2023, the prequel is based on novellas written by George R.R. Martin. During the Warner Bros. Discovery February, 2024 earnings call, CEO David Zaslov revealed the prequel is currently in preproduction.

Westeros is getting some new faces.
The “Game of Thrones” spinoff “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” has added seven new cast members.
The HBO series has cast Edward Ashley (“Masters of the Air”) as Ser Steffon Fossoway, Henry Ashton (“A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder” and “My Lady Jane”) as Daeron Targaryen, Youssef Kerkour (“House of Gucci”) as Steely Pate, Daniel Monks (Netflix’s upcoming film “Kaos”) as Ser Manfred Dondarrion, Shaun Thomas (“How to Have Sex”) as Raymun Fossoway, Tom Vaughan-Lawlor (“Avengers: Infinity War”) as Plummer and Danny Webb (HBO’s “The Regime” and “The Dig”) as Ser Arlan of Pennytree. For fans who recently finished Season 2 of “House of the Dragon,” the Daeron in “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” is different than the one in the prequel series — just like how there are multiple Aegons in Westeros history.

With several Emmys stalwarts not eligible for nominations this year, it was expected that there would be a number of surprises among the 2024 Emmy nominations.
But while some series and stars broke through, other anticipated nominees from new shows didn’t fare as well as they’d hoped.
Despite a big awards push, Showtime’s The Curse failed to receive any Emmy nominations, with star Emma Stone among the awards hopefuls not nominated. Similarly, the Nicole Kidman-fronted Expats for Amazon’s Prime Video was also left out of this year’s nominations. And HBO’s The Regime only earned one nod, for its costumes, leaving stars Kate Winslet and Hugh Grant snubbed.
Other acclaimed actors who failed to receive nominations include Kelsey Grammer, not nominated for his Frasier revival after the original series was a regular Emmy winner; Abbott Elementary supporting players William Stanford Davis and Chris Perfetti; The Gilded Age...

With fewer eligible series — a consequence of both last year’s strikes and of a general post-Peak TV contraction — it seemed unlikely that the Emmys (the second such ceremony this year!) would provide much in the way of surprises.
Perhaps, though, awards-watchers shouldn’t have counted them out.
Wednesday morning’s nominations announcement featured at least one major contender (Emma Stone in “The Curse”) shut out, and included heartening and unexpected recognition for other stars whose names hadn’t been part of the conversation to this point. (Congratulations to Idris Elba and Matt Berry!)
In all, the Emmy nominations depict an industry in rapid transition — relatively few returning series made the cut. But nowhere was the competition more pitched, and the volume of surprise omissions as high, as in the limited series field. (Read the full list of nominees here.)

Once again, the Emmy Awards nominations don’t include a slew of TV favorites. Among the most notable snubs: Emma Stone for Best Drama Actress and a complete shutout of her Showtime series “The Curse.” Equally surprising was “Shogun” supporting actresses Moeka Hoshi and Fumi Nikaido missing the ballot. On the comedy side, Netflix’s “The Gentlemen” missed for Comedy Series and a forecasted bid for its star Theo James. And although “The Bear” had a solid morning overall, Abby Elliott wasn’t able to ride the wave of fortune in Best Comedy Supporting Actress. Oliver Platt and Matty Matheson were also snubbed on the Supporting Actor side.
Below, we enumerate the top 50 Emmys snubs in our estimation. These were the shows and performers that we thought had a strong chance to number among this year’s nominees. Let us know if there are others missing from this list that...

Hugh Grant has spoken out against the closure of his local Picturehouse Cinema in southwest London on the eve of screens going black at the venue which has been home to a cinema theater for nearly one hundred years.
Picturehouse, the UK boutique cinema arm of ailing global exhibitor Cineworld, announced the closure on July 11 of its Fulham Road cinema theater, last month.

If there is any agreement among Emmy pundits this awards season, it’s the fact that perhaps the most competitive collection of categories surrounds the limited series genre, where an embarrassment of riches promises a dogfight among an abundant list of worthy nominees in Best Limited Series and the four limited/made-for-tv movie acting lineups. During a limited-focused slugfest debate in advance of the Emmy nominations announcement on July 17, Gold Derby senior editors Denton Davidson, Marcus James Dixon and Daniel Montgomery and news and features editor Ray Richmond were all in agreement that Gold Derby pacesetter “Baby Reindeer” is a worthy frontrunner that’s likely to ultimately take the top limited prize (assuming it is in fact nominated). But they were all over the map on how the rest of that category shaped up as well as how the performer slots were poised to shake out. While there are a...

Although 2023 Emmy nominations voters were able to view the entire second season of “The Bear” while judging the merits of its first, the team behind the FX series did not employ a similar strategy in 2024. Nonetheless, the newly released third season will still influence TV academy members as they spend part of August deciding whether season two is worthy of any wins. The latest episodes have already impacted the mindsets of Gold Derby’s 2024 Emmy predictors, who have collectively boosted its odds in several categories over the past week.

Kate Winslet made her screen debut with a British television series titled Dark Season in 1991. She soon followed it with her movie debut in 1994 with Heavenly Creatures. And though she found critical acclaim, Winslet garnered worldwide fame after starring in the James Cameron directorial, Titanic (1997). Since then, she has become a renowned actress, winning multiple accolades, including an Oscar for Best Actress.

The fact that the 76th Emmy nominations voting round ended on Monday means that Gold Derby’s users have had over 10 days to make their picks in five categories that were previously not included in our predictions center. After taking very little time to form, these new consensus lineups have remained virtually unchanged for nearly two weeks, presumably because they generally consist of tried-and-true contenders and almost exclusively align with the prospect of repeat wins.
Based on the predictions of all 3,000 of our participating readers, the only major change that has occurred in the five new categories since voting opened is “Top Chef” presenter Kristen Kish’s displacement of Gordon Ramsay (“Next Level Chef”) in the Best Reality/Competition Host lineup. Hugh Grant has a unique strategy for discouraging unsolicited visitors in the first trailer for A24’s psychological horror feature Heretic.

“Yellowjackets” breakout Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East star as two young missionaries are forced to prove their faith when they knock on the wrong door and are greeted by a diabolical Mr. Reed (Grant), becoming ensnared in his deadly game of cat-and-mouse.
A24 additionally has fellow horror film “The Front Room” on the horizon, hailing from Robert Eggers’ brothers Max and Sam Eggers. The highly-anticipated “MaXXXine,” closing out Ti West’s “X” trilogy, also hits theaters in July 2024.

Hugh Laurie has never won an Emmy. That seems like an egregious oversight on behalf of TV academy voters, considering the British actor starred as one of the best TV characters of this century in “House.” Still, 10 nominations (we’ll get to those later) and zero wins.
He could finally break that losing streak with Netflix’s “All the Light We Cannot See.” Adapted from Anthony Doerr‘s 2014 novel of the same name, written by Steven Knight, and directed by Shawn Levy, this miniseries depicts the lives of two teenagers during WWII — one a blind French girl and the other a German boy forced to fight for the Nazi regime. Laurie features as Uncle Étienne, a reclusive, agoraphobic WWI veteran suffering from Ptsd. Laurie has always been a classy performer and he again brings a lot of heart, warmth, and intelligence here to this role, as noted by several critics.

“The Great Lillian Hall” reunites three “American Horror Story” actresses to deliver a tour de force in TV movies. Jessica Lange, Kathy Bates, and Lily Rabe all star in this HBO TV Movie, directed by Michael Cristofer, that follows the careers of fictional Broadway actress Lillian Hall.
It’s Lange who plays Lillian and the veteran actress has turned in another masterclass in acting. She has always been a commanding screen presence and that doesn’t change here as she depicts a legendary actress as a triumph on stage but a nervous wreck in rehearsals while she battles with early dementia. It’s always a treat watching icons play icons (Lange did this again in “Feud: Bette and Joan”) and while Lillian is fictional, the impact is no less felt. Critics agree, this could be Lange’s greatest performance yet.
Caryn James (The Hollywood Reporter) observed: “Jessica Lange is perfection...

It was important to creator Will Tracy that the country Elena Vernham (Kate Winslet) misrules in “The Regime” be as mercurial and as unknowable as she is; culturally, it needed to fit into both Western and Eastern Europe. There needed to be a sense of a long history in the design of the palace and Elena’s public image without dipping into actual world history. But the one thing Tracy was sure it didn’t need was a name.
“I didn’t have to bend myself into pretzel shapes to avoid coming up with a name. It just never, never occurred to me and never seemed necessary,” Tracy told IndieWire on an episode of the Filmmaker Toolkit podcast. “It seemed to add to the enjoyment and mystery of the show, that feeling of when are we, where are we?”
“The Regime” deftly balances which characters we feel close to by who feels the most unmoored.

Editor’s note: Deadline’s It Starts on the Page features standout limited or anthology series scripts in 2024 Emmy contention.
“Don’t worry. He’s what we want,” exclaims deposed despot Elena Vernham (Kate Winslet) to her last loyal aide Herbert Zubak (Matthias Schoenaerts) of a citizen who has come to their assistance in The Regime finale. “A beautiful perfect idiot who will do anything for me.”
Debuting March 3, the six-part realpolitik satire, created and executive produced by Succession alum Will Tracy, sees Oscar and Emmy winner Winslet return to HBO in an often hilarious role as the vainglorious Elena. Traversing a year in the life of a crumbling authoritarian regime, the timely The Regime also stars Hugh Grant, Marth Plimpton, Oscar nominee Andrea Louise Riseborough and Guillaume Gallienne.
The finale, “Don’t Yet Rejoice,” written by Tracy and directed by Jessica Hobbs, brings The Regime to an unexpected conclusion.

Wherever I go, when I tell people that I work as an editor for Gold Derby, they never fail to bring up their latest binge-fest and how obsessed they were with it. “Ripley” occupied that space for several weeks, replaced by “Baby Reindeer,” then “Fellow Travelers.” Before that, I ran into a bunch of “Lessons in Chemistry” fans, and friends who were absolutely obsessed with “Feud: Capote vs. the Swans.” “Fargo: Season 5” and “True Detective: Night Country” also had, and continue to have, legions of followers. And of course, “Shogun” consumed people for a good long while.
The point is that Best Limited Series has grown the past few years into the hottest and most prestigious Emmy category, and that’s especially true in 2024 with the depletion of the Best Drama Series and Best Comedy Series due to the 2023 strikes and the departure of shows like “Succession” and “Ted Lasso.

The State of the Race
There are a lot less serial killer roles this time around when it comes to the contenders for the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or a Movie, though “True Detective: Night Country” and “Fargo” are still doing their best to keep the crime wave alive. Both the HBO and FX series boast several actors...

Songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul are on the verge of Egot status… that is, if Emmy voters nominate their song from “Only Murders in the Building” and it winds up winning three months from now.
Pasek and Paul — already Oscar winners for “La La Land” and Tony and Grammy winners for “Dear Evan Hansen” — could finally manage that feat with the witty comic patter song “Which of the Pickwick Triplets Did It?,” sung by Steve Martin and co-written with fellow Tony and Grammy winners Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman for the third season of the Hulu comedy-drama.
They are among the many prominent songwriters who have entered songs in this year’s Emmy competition. Voting began Thursday, with approximately 550 members of the Television Academy music peer group eligible to vote in seven music categories. Voting ends June 24 and the nominations will be announced July 17.
