Entertaining but they didn't know when to stop with some things
LordOfLotion27 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This was a cute Hallmark holiday movie that once again got too carried away with a running gag or theme. Lacey Chabert returns to a home in an HOA, and her parents immediately leave her behind for the dual purpose of getting her acclimated to living in the house alone so they can give it to her, and to fix her up with Wes Brown. They don't tell her any of this, so when Wes comes around and starts handing her multiple tickets for violations of these dumb HOA Christmas decoration rules, it gets obnoxious in combination with the over the top behavior of the neighbors. They keep coercing her into doing stuff she doesn't want to do and she never says no and shuts the front door. There was a lot of funny stuff that could have been a lot funnier if they could have stopped pounding this HOA thing in with a jackhammer. As it was, I never bought into the Lacey/Wes romance or her actually staying in the neighborhood at the end. I would have gratefully accepted the house from my parents but I would have immediately sold it, and I wouldn't have given Wes my forwarding address.

Over the top cheesy
Saving2130 November 2022
This was a disaster. They tried to do Christmas comedy with romance but failed. This is a story about a woman played by Lacey Chabert hallmark house name who isn't the most Christmas cheerleader going back home to a place that is all Christmas joy. This was supposed to be a movie about finding the joy and happiness of Christmas. But instead it became unbearable to watch. All the characters were over the top cliche that were too annoying. It wasn't funny or magical . They tried to do romance story but it didn't work. I love the actor another hallmark actor but the character was as annoying as everyone else in this movie.

This could have worked better but when most of the characters including the awful parents are annoying there is nothing to make you enjoy the movie.

There is a little thing that I noticed. I think I saw Lisa Chabert Wearing the same white sweater in a Christmas movie before. Look in "Time for Us to Come Home for Christmas" from last year. It's the same.

Hallmark's "Christmas with the Kranks"
HotToastyRag12 December 2022
Many times, the small screen imitates the big screen. For Hallmark's take on Christmas with the Kranks, check out the new release, Haul Out the Holly. And no, before you start cringing, the heroine's name isn't Holly. Lacey Chabert plays Emily, a woman who returns to the sanctuary of her childhood home to heal from a break-up over Christmas. Only, her parents have taken off on a spontaneous Florida vacation and have refused to stay behind to lend emotional support. At first, I thought they knew their daughter so well, their abandonment was one giant "recovery plan": by making her focus on the Christmas spirit, she'd forget about her broken heart and find herself. But no, they just went on vacation. Another plot point I found confusing: if Lacey wanted to be left alone over the holiday and not get immersed in cheer and festivities, why did she return to her small hometown that has an entire HOA dedicated to Christmas decorations and traditions? Did she really think she pass December by without a wreath or tree?

Haul Out the Holly has a very modern style of humor, so not everyone will be laughing until their sides hurt. The under-30 crowd probably will, as it has a theme that's very popular with the "young folks": make fun of rich, white people. Set in a wealthy Utah suburb, the bulk of the humor is dedicated to poking fun of HOA rules and the strictness of "Christmas cheer quotas". One woman bursts into hysterical sobs when she wins a cookie contest, one man measures the height of a nutcracker to see if it's up to the neighborhood standards, and there's a "Team Kringle" secret society that comes with a Santa hat, striped walkie talkie, and underground initiation.

If you're laughing at those little examples, you'll love this movie. If you've ever lived among a strict HOA and found it ridiculous, you'll be glad to release some tension and laugh at your former (or current) neighbors. I was very happy to see some familiar faces in the supporting cast. While everyone will look forward to "Ned Ryerson" (Stephen Tobolowsky) playing one of the gung-ho neighbors, I was thrilled to recognize Walter Platz, whom I watch every year in one of my favorite Hallmarks, Switched for Christmas. Honestly, he was the highlight of the movie for me. Give this over-the-top Christmas comedy a try, especially if you're watching it with your adult children who will probably love it.

Well..

Watching this as I'm searching to buy a home & this movie reinforces,my hate for HOA or similar associations.

Imagine paying a mortgage/owning a home & dealing with a person or association, way more annoying than a landlord.

No thanks! Why do people choose this? Unless an association is formed after your an owner, but still why agree to such things.

Being ticketed for holiday standards not being followed? This movie actually gave me anxiety, wasn't almost anything cute about it.

Look at Naughty or Nice & even Christmas with the Kranks, dealt with neighbor issues but in a comedic way.. This movie went in an unhealthy direction, calling it satire still doesn't excuse it.

Oh sure many feel an HOA is useful from preventing nearby Sandford & Son type homes, but bullying a person that doesn't follow Stepford protocol is ridiculous.. I have ran across many HOA communities that only allow D. I. N. K-Double Income No Kid,that's a whole other level of crazy to avoid.

Sure it was a bit different storyline & acting like the houses over the top,but nothing worth watching again.

Casting was ok & cinematography,is always decent.

Super Christmas-y, Not Romantic
HallmarkJenny9 December 2022
Visually-pleasing movie with insanely good lighting and lots of Christmas festivities! This movie is quirky and fun. Lacey Chabert is radiant, lovely, very funny, and plays a different type of role where she is not super into Christmas. And Wes Brown's eyes are gorgeously blue.

Haul Out the Holly Summary Emily travels home for Christmas with her parents only to discover they are moving to Florida. Jared, the new HOA President, makes Emily act as proxy for her involved parents and participate in the neighborhood block's many Christmas events along with decorating their house. Jared and the neighbors' celebratory cheer turn Emily's feelings of Christmas decorations and festivities into feelings of gratefulness and love.

"Is Christmas merely the longest to do list of all time? Or is all that work actually fun? Maybe this year I'll find out." -Emily.

MeetCute: Young Emily and Jared, childhood neighbors, take a polaroid picture of themselves Christmas morning that Jared saves.

As adults, Jared greets Emily at her parent's house and introduces himself as the proud new HOA President. Jared gives Emily a citation for 'insufficient Christmas décor.'

Setting: Evergreen Lane Near Salt Lake City

This neighborhood block that goes all out for Christmas and everyone has large, striking houses decorated to the max! Emily's parents used to organize and enforce the HOA's strict Christmas décor stipulations and as a result, the block is absolutely stunning with Christmas Lights, blow-ups, and trees everywhere.

Baking Scene: Christmas Cookies Emily, Jess and her daughter make Christmas Cookies for the Cookie Contest later that day.

They ice cookies with red, green and yellow frosting while discussing Jared's obvious crush on Lacey.

When they bring their cookies to the Cookie Contest, they test the cookies and realize they used salt instead of sugar!

Ned tries to eat a cookie. To stop him Emily finds out what Ned is allergic to and tells him that Sulfites are the secret ingredient.

Haul out the silly
MickyG33315 November 2023
7.2 stars.

There are mixed reviews, they are all over the map for 'Hall out the Holly'. I elected to skip it last year, had to delete a bunch of movies because my DVR was full and this one got the boot. I am revisiting all those that got canned and to my surprise this is not bad. In fact, since I'm in a glass is half full mood, I'd say this is half good. Ok, so what is it about? A woman comes home to visit her parents for Christmas after some years being away pursuing a career (typical Hallmark back story). But when she gets home, things start getting weird. Hallmark throws us a curveball, out with the usual drab, let's think outside the box for once and actually have actors that we recognize from mainstream television and movies. In fact, let's get a few.

It's a silly story about a neighborhood HOA that has laws about Christmas, which means people who live there have to abide by the rules of decorating and celebrating the holiday in such a way...so it's a strange plot, I know. It's all in fun, and silly, but it does smell of Stepford with a cult vibe somewhat...you'll see. Again, nothing scary, just a bit of neighborly propaganda and enthusiasm for the season. Chabert gives us one of her better performances for sure.

HOA's Rule!
rkaden-281502 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This movie was so rediculous and over the top, it was actually funny. All the characters over acted their parts, except for Lacey, and were very convincing as members of a neighborhood HOA. Having lived with HOA's for almost 30 years and been a president for 12, I can identify with trying to get residents to obey the rules. Although, getting a violation for not having enough Christmas decorations up was a bit extreme. Wes Brown pulled of his part of being the enforcer but not wanting to really offend anyone.

The one troubling part of this film occurred right at the beginnng when the parents were about to leave their 7 year old home alone on Christmas morning to put on the annual Christmas carnival or parade, I forget which.

All and all, as I said, I thougt this was a funny movie although not one of Hallmark's best.

Whoever thought this was a good idea?
kategobe30 November 2022
Lacey and Wes did a really good job with the script they were given but there was just no way to save this monstrosity. The writer, Andy Sandberg, created a mess that never should've seen the light of day and yet someone produced it anyway.

To think that this movie is supposed to be family friendly only makes it so much worse. People with children are watching this disaster!

The whole movie is based on super intense peer pressure and a total disregard for the leading character's boundaries. The lead is constantly pressured, to the point where I'd call it harassment, to participate in over-the-top Christmas events which are blatantly labelled as obligations. I'm normally not so bothered about movies skirting the lines of moral but this one is just too appaling.

The very obviously fake snow and perfectly round fake snowpeople fit perfectly with the supporting characters who are all in desperate need of a psychiatrist. And let's not forget the immature love interest. The movie starts out with "Emily" dumping her manchild jerk boyfriend, only to meet another annoying grown baby who has absolutely no regards for her boundaries.

The very worst part is that none of these trainwreck characters ever change, they all stay just as obnoxious, tacky, and invasive to the very end. But hey, it's Christmas so let's just cheer for the message this movies sends...

Funny if you're willing!
revchrisesq30 November 2022
This movie is hysterical. Stephen Tobolosky plays Ned. You might remember him as Needle Nose Ned, Ned the Head, Ned Ryerson from Case Western High in Groundhog Day! Bing! I swear there are several inferences to that character in this movie in addition to his name being Ned. And he plays an over the top character like he did in Groundhog Day!

Anyway this is over the top satire of a restricted community with a ridiculous over the top HOA (Homeowners Association.). As a real estate attorney for 45 years this HOA is both ridiculous and therefore hilarious.

But- and this is what makes the movie- they grow on you. At first wife and I laughed and said "There's no way in hell we'd live there", by the end of the movie we were saying, "Well. Maybe..."

Reindeer are a handful at this time of night
jamhendr-7225123 July 2023
After watching the movie a second time and reading the user reviews, I am a little surprised. Here are my questions:

1. Why are so many reviews of this movie so negative? This is not a 1 star movie.

2. Conversely, why are so many reviews of this movie so over-the-top positive? It's definitely not a 10 star movie either. This is a middle of the road, slightly funnier but much less heartwarming movie from Hallmark.

3. Why is there going to be a sequel to this?

4. What do people have against Canadian actors?

This is an OK movie. It's got the com usually missing from Hallmark rom-coms. Melissa Peterman is perfect for this. Wes Brown is funnier than usual as the leading man. Lacey Chabert is as charming as ever. And there cameos and inside jokes made me smile.

Is it a classic? No. Is it a movie about the true meaning of Christmas? Again, no. Is it funny? Yes.

Among the quotes from this movie:

(After winning a neighborhood cookie contest) "Victory gives me purpose."

"Chad Kroeger was my everything. I mean, that hair."

"I'm here now. Just a girl standing in front of a boy, asking him to be the most perfect Santa Claus."

"Even the biggest jerk is no match for the Christmas spirit."

Haul it Away
rebekahrox29 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This was so messed up. I think it was supposed to be a fun comedic look at recapturing one's love for Christmas decorations after a childhood of one's parents prioritizing the trappings of Christmas over their own child's simpler needs and desires. The movie opens with the parents of a little girl leaving the house on Christmas morning to attend some kind of Neighborhood Christmas Carnival. The little girl begs her mom and Dad to let her open just one present before they leave. They impatiently agree but give her the present she has to open. It's a camera so she can assist in the neighborhood project by taking pictures for the record. All the little girl wants is to open presents under the tree on Christmas morning as a family. The only thing her Mom and Dad want is to make sure the neighborhood carnival runs smoothly.

We meet the adult Lacey Chabert who after years of understandably avoiding Christmas with her mom and dad is at loose ends this year due to a breakup. She decides to go home for Christmas. Her parents are happy and encouraging, but as she arrives at the front door, to her shock, her parents leave for Florida! Left alone at Christmas, she promises to take care of the house and put up the decorations for the neighborhood extravaganza as her Christmas present to them. As soon as her parents leave, the nightmare begins. She is visited by her old friend, Wes Brown, who is now president of the HOA. He informs her that she is being given a citation for inadequate Christmas decorations. Lacey just wants to have a relaxing peaceful Christmas watching Hallmark Christmas movies, but instead is hounded by the neighborhood to participate in decorating her house to specification and pitching in with all of the organized "fun". Front and center among all of the obnoxious neighbors is the petty dictator of the HOA, who is absolutely serious when he measures her Nutcracker lawn ornament to ensure it meets the height requirement. He is the love interest.

Lacey is way too people-pleasing for her own good . By the end, in what can only be the Stockholm Syndrome effect, she has bought into it all and the message is clear. The trappings of Christmas are more important than family, love, peace on earth, and goodwill toward men. It turns out that this was all manipulated by her parents to get her used to living in their house and presumably complying with the HOA covenants. Without even running it by her, they give her their house as a Christmas present. They also want her to get together with their protegee, Wes Brown. Lacey is doomed for ever. Hopefully, he will put away his ever-present citation book before they settle down to marital bliss in the bedroom.

Even cameo appearances by Kristoffer Polaha and Eric Mabius can't save this one. And neither can Lacey, settling down to watch a Brennan Elliot Christmas movie professing "Oh I love him!" Cute inside joke for Hallmarkies. I laughed. I just wish Brennan could have ridden in on his white reindeer to rescue Lacey from this nightmare.

If you want to see the beloved Lacey Chabert, who plays a nice woman too tolerant and compliant for her own good, bossed around, manipulated, threatened, and bullied for almost an hour and half in service of a message that is diametrically opposed to the true meaning of Christmas, this is the one for you.

A funny and enjoyable movie.
Avidviewer-0284730 November 2022
Thankfully not another sickly sweet Christmas movie. A refreshingly different Hallmark holiday film, that was funny and quirky. The plot and script worked and the dialog was good, plenty of repartee. Lacey Chabert is always reliable, it was obvious that West Brown was enjoying himself acting it up as Jared and he was funny. The standouts were Stephen Tobolowsky as Ned and Melissa Peterman as Pamela, they were very funny. A character actors' dream and there were plenty of character actors who gave very good performances. The pace was perfect from the encounter between Lacey Chabert and Jake Stormoen (Dan) to the very end. Good script, good acting and enjoyable to watch.

Good to see Kristoffer Polaha and Eric Mabius.

Dumb, insipid, lacking a cohesive plot but funny nonetheless
teepack-753125 December 2022
If you accept the ridiculous premise of this movie, it is one of the funnier Hallmark movies ever. If you can't buy into it, you'll turn it off after about 30 minutes, which is what I did initially. But then I went back and finished it and was pleasantly surprised. It had many humorous lines and situations and over-the-top characters that take some getting used to. Getting Ned from Groundhog Day and basically letting him run amok was either an ingenious choice or a colossal waste of his talents. Where you land in that debate depends on how well you can buy into the (lack of a) story. This movie has no plot. Lacey's character's parents are two of the most reprehensible human beings ever in a Hallmark movie. Heaven help any non-Christian that moves into a neighborhood that forces you to celebrate Christmas and decorate your house like you're trying to win a contest. Yes, it was dumb. Yes, nothing was at stake. Yes, Lacey and Wes's characters had no reason to fall for each other. But despite all that, or perhaps because of it, it was pretty funny, and Wes and Lacey played their characters to the utmost. I might even watch it again next year.

Just plain stupid
bl-6397429 November 2022
If you're looking for a review that doesn't trash this movie might as well move on. I'm well aware that they crank these out in less than a month most times. But I'm sorry it still doesn't mean you have to have quality actors act this stupid. I really thought I was watching a Disney movie where the kids always overract and ham It Up. I almost think some of these actors were that desperate for a gig that they took this because I have seen them in other movies where they do quality work this time they were just told to go overboard. I really feel guilty about giving this one star it doesn't deserve even that .

Home Not So Alone
atlasmb20 January 2024
This Hallmark holiday comedy benefits from a clever script peppered with pop culture references. It also has a cast of comedic talents. As a result, it is a fun watch.

The story starts with Emily (Lacey Chabert) deciding to visit her parents for the Christmas holiday. When she arrives, they immediately leave for Florida, and she is left on her own. It's not such a bad deal, because she has just parted ways with her long-time boyfriend, so she can use time alone to consider her options and get over the breakup.

But her parents live on Evergreen Lane, where the homeowners association has rigid rules about the observance of Christmas. Soon she is visited by Jared (Wes Brown), the association president, who cites her for a lack of decorations.

There is a plan in play, and everyone seems to be in on it, except Emily. She reluctantly agrees to a minimal amount of decorating, but it won't be that easy: the entire week is filled with holiday-themed events. Will she fully embrace the Christmas spirit? Will she discover what game is at play on Evergreen Lane?

A special mention goes to Stephen Tobolowsky and Melissa Peterman, who get to play the crazy-funny kinds of characters they do so well. As for Lacey, a story like this is her bread and butter.

Mixed Feelings
ssenkiw27 October 2023
I have mixed feelings about Haul Out The Holly. It has a lot of good actors, and interesting characters. It has a different twist on the plot, with an over-the-top Home Owners Association and citations for not following all the Christmas rules.

In a way, the HOA is painfully realistic, because they are known for taking away people's freedom. In other ways it is just plain silly.

Perhaps the movie tries to do too much. We expect sentimentality in a Hallmark movie. There is some of it there. But Emily's parents don't really seem to have a loving relationship with her. The comedic melodramatic moments are confusing. The references to other movies get lost.

Maybe if you are prepared to be annoyed, the movie is funnier? I did watch it twice, and it was better the second time.

Was good but bad at the same time
vassilispassas16 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The movie could easily get a 10/10 if the plot actually have gotten better. It is supposed to be a comedy movie but it failed to make me even smile out of fun. Why? You may ask the "comedy" scenes are just stupid scenes without any actual fun thing For example there was this scenes that the father of the protagonist jumped on a pool This was supposed to be a comedy scene but it was just plain And theres another scene that Pamela sings Opera it was just a stupid scene. The movie could have been better but sometimes the producers didn't try to make some parts interesting/fun/Dramatic (there's a bit of drama in the the movie).

Warning: Spoilers
This movie was unwatchable for me. I love Lacey Chabert and Wes Brown. But he was so annoying. The parents leaving and making her do all the Christmas decorating after they were portrayed as being so involved with the neighborhood activities seemed a bit of a stretch. I know, they're all trying to get the romantic leads together. The neighborhood people were terrible. Melissa Peterman was just too much. I turned it off after the cookie contest because she was just awful. The poor girl just wanted some peace and to get over the break-up. Too many characters that I didn't care about and decided to not waste my time.

Haul Out The Holly delivers the funny!
Ekm82851127 November 2022
Haul Out The Holly was funny and enjoyable for the whole family to watch together! Lacey and Wes were great together (funny, great chemistry and banter!) and the supporting cast added so much to the movie. The two surprise cameos were an added bonus! My only critique would be that I wish they let Melissa Peterman go full out funny. She was hilarious in Reba and Baby Daddy and with the Haul Out The Holly storyline, Melissa's trademark full out funny would've fit in well. Overall, I really enjoyed the movie and think the change up with Haul Out The Holly and Three Wise Men and a Baby storylines worked very well for Hallmark this year!

It's a spoof, people
veejayp1 December 2023
Wanting a quiet Christmas with her parents after a romantic breakup, Lacey Chabert's Emily is dragooned into the neighbourhood Christmas madness. (Bit like Christmas With the Kranks)

You'd think she'd know what to expect as her parents have been leading members of the local Residents' Association for decades - but no. Being a sweet well-mannered girl, she meekly agrees to whatever the dingbat neighbours want. Nor does she object when mum & dad waltz off to Florida.

(I reckon it would be worth being written out of the will for the exquisite pleasure of telling them what's on her mind but Emily's nicer than I am) Of course, had she told them all to bog off and booked herself into a luxury spa, it would be more realistic but a much shorter film!

There are some very funny one-liners and cameos here. Neighbours fanatical about the size and positioning of light-up reindeer, desperate to win the cookie competition or who builds the biggest snowman are exaggerated - but maybe not all that much...

The Worst Hallmark Movie I've Ever Seen
jkridpath29 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I love Hallmark movies, and I love Christmas, but this was awful. First, Lacey Chaberts character is cast aside and ignored as a kid at Christmas so her parents can host parties for neighbors. Then when she grows up (after allowing a boyfriend to treat her poorly for years), her parents convince her to come home and spend Christmas with them only to ditch her, and leave her all of their holiday work. Next, a crazy HOA president and her parents other neighbors ignore her pleas to be able to enjoy Christmas, and not make it all about busywork. Instead of everyone else realizing Christmas isn't all about busyness and decor, she turns into one of them and falls for the crazy HOA president who cited her for not having her parents decorations up on time, or having the correct size of decorations. He didn't care anything about what she wanted or needed, just like her previous boyfriend. Her dysfunctional relationship cycle continues on.

Hallmark meets SNL
jim-25-64992223 October 2023
Poking fun at themselves? Who knew! It was like SNL takes on Hallmark movies, scripts, actors, crew... in one of their skits.

A little self-deprecating can be very funny!! Taking that into account, the movie is one of the funniest and best Hallmark movies!!! The actors were great in scenes they probably don't get a chance to do in Hallmark movies. It appeared to me that the actors were in the movie and having a good time while also poking fun at the genre they work in for Hallmark. And good at Hallmark for letting them make this very funny and different kind of movie! Hopefully it won't be the last! Great job.

Couldn't even survive with Lacey
VetteRanger1 December 2022
Lacey Chabert is one of our favorites, so we looked forward to this. We're not the only big fans ... that's why they made her their new spokesperson for Christmas movies after other stars signed with GAF.

However, this movie just annoyed me from start to finish. The writers went for zany and quirky and slapstick. Three swings, three misses.

The HOA part of the plot seemed overbearing and intrusive and ALWAYS over the top. The movie wasn't full of "Christmas spirit", but anti-social, antagonistic, controlling neighbors I might have been driven to burn out.

I was ready to bag it by the "set up the reindeer" scene, but my wife held on to desperate hope for improvement for somewhat longer. A few minutes later, she succumbed to the desire to stop the pain.

So Awful and Annoying
nmartin-7557528 November 2022
Lacey is clearly my favorite Hallmark actress especially in the Christmas movies. She deserves better than this. This movie was beyond terrible and I couldn't wait for it to be over. C'mon Hallmark - you have a year to come up with some good Christmas movies and this is what we get!! Year after year, I'm hoping for some movies that I could rate a ten and year after year I'm disappointed with these stupid scripts. This was by far the worst one I've seen so far this season. I've yet to come across a "10". Where are the movies like A Dog Named Christmas and Christmas with Tucker. You must think all we want are Christmas decorations and tinsel. Think again.

I'm thinking some missed the point.
Whitneywest1030 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I completely get it. Don't get me wrong! I was full side eye for a chunk of this one myself. My personal main must for Christmas movies is the decor and this one had it so that's why I stuck around because the parents here?? Hated them. Until I didn't. It was a try out! A freaking try out! I get this one isn't going to be for everyone. I prefer Chabert when she doesn't portray the sugary sweet and overly bubbly lead. I thought Wes Brown was a quirky and endearing break from the normal cookie cutter love interest. I appreciated all of the nods to Christmas movie classics. I thought the supporting cast did a fantastic job and were hilarious while also making me care about them. This has actually been one of my favorites of the year so far. I really hate that it missed the mark for so many others. If you're still unsure if you want to watch this one or previously thought it was unwatchable because of unlikable characters then I encourage you to push through and give it a chance. I'm glad I did.
