... And all sorts of mischief are happening.
At a country lodge on Wards Island, a card game is in progress. There is a dispute between the players. The electricity goes out, so one of the players leaves the room to fetch an oil lamp. By the time she returns, and there is light, one if the disputing players is dead with a throat wound, and there is an open window blowing in the gale.
Back at Police Station 4, Crabtree and Brackenreid are the only two officers present, as everyone else is attending to various emergencies around the city. Two officers arrive from Station 2, accompanying a criminal who is to testify the next day in a case against a well- known but rarely seen arch-criminal known as the Razor, due to the sharpness of his intellect. Their Station house is flooded, so they ask Brackenreid to babysit the witness. what could possibly go wrong?
Murdoch arrives on the island to discover that Dr Grace is among the card players. They have been playing Faro, a game of chance, but even though there had been accusations of cheating around the table, everyone is adamant that they were not illegally playing for money. Murdoch senses Dr Grace is hiding something, but what?
A man arrives at Police Station 4, demanding shelter from the storm. Is he the Razor? Crabtree and Brackenreid mockinglyj discuss Murdoch's appearance and methods over increasingly generous glasses of Scotch, but Crabtree defends him, pointing to his valuable advice not to ignore the small details...
It turns out that the card game on the island was a kind of lottery for the chance to enjoy a near-death experience, and this same group of players meets regularly to gamble. Murdoch is shocked that Dr Grace is involved, as she is a person of science.
Having set up the stories, each unfolds in both predictable and unpredictable ways. There is a good deal of suspense, Murdoch's life is put in extreme danger, but as he is the hero of the series, I'm not spoiling it by saying that he is rescued.
The next day, the cells at Station 4 contain more than one villain from the night's incidents.
A very good episode, claustrophobic in its way, and with the barest minimum of characters.
