Great Christmas special
mam131437 December 2011
I gave this show 9 out of 10 only because I think nothing is really perfect, but this special is as good as it gets in itself, and as it relates to the series. Nice storyline, good intertwining with all the Warehouse characters and villain, and excellent production values. The special effects are prevalent and carried out effectively. The story is nicely thought out so that it's not a typical series Christmas special (a standard story with some Christmas balls and decorations thrown in). The interaction of the main characters is, as usual, excellent. Generally a very well done Christmas special. Highly recommended especially for fans of the series.

What if?

Warning: Spoilers
The episode opens with Pete in handcuffs being interrogated by MacPherson and two warehouse agents. He's trying to convince them that he's a warehouse agent and they're trying to convince him that he's not. Pete escapes and goes in search of his pals. When he calls Myka, her mom tells him that she has no idea who he is and that Myka's father has died and that Myka is a federal agent working in D.C. Off he goes to see Myka who also insists she's never met him. He tries to convince her that he knows things about her that only a close friend could know and the stalker she thinks he is wouldn't know. He finally does it when he tells her that she refuses to watch any movie where an animal is hurt (go Myka - my sentiments exactly). We find that Artie is in jail and Claudia is in a mental institution. It's Artie, of course, who figures out that Pete touched an artifact that is causing all this and they race off to retrieve the artifact and reverse the effects. Of course, nothing is ever easy in this show and there are some suitably tense moments. There is a good bit of humor in this episode which I like and it was great that homage was paid to my all time favorite movie - It's a Wonderful Life.

Great BUT.....

Warning: Spoilers
I love this episode for so many reasons but two. I am not aware what sort of person Roger Rees is but watching him as a bad guy is uncomfortable. The face he pulls looks like he has a dirty secret and he just sucked a lemon. It's full on nausea inducing. Secondly the black actor plays warehouse goon #2 seems to always play the same character: cop/agent who thinks he's so good it drips off every word he utters and yet he's just a dumb automaton that is so dumb he doesn't realize he's on the wrong side of the battle. Fortunately it's only 40 minutes long and they are both done in by the good characters/actors.

Will Pete Latimer never learn about playing with artefacts?

I have watched this episode several times, and watching it again on the Pick TV channel, a thought has only just occurred to me.

That this episode bares a similarity to a film the Wonderful Life with James Stewart, I should have realised this before now.

Because the specific references are actually made within the episode, when Pete seeks help from Artie and they talk with Myka, about what Pete may have possibly touched.

This specific wrinkle lifts the episode, above a mere Xmas Ho Ho Ho episode, that so bedevils especially yank television shows, such that television networks simply love inflicting them, on their viewers at any time of the year.

Of course this particular episode just has to end, with the entire Warehouse 13 sitting around together in the lounge, and watching the seasonal movie It's a Wonderful Life.
