Dream Eater Merry
Tweekums22 October 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Outwardly Yumeji Fujiwara is a ordinary high school student but he has an unusual gift; he can predict the nature of the dreams a person will have when they next sleep; he also has rather strange dreams himself. One day a mysterious girl literally falls on him; it turns out that she is a Dream Demon called Merry Nightmare. There is something unusual about her too; dream demons shouldn't be able to enter the real world without a human 'vessel'. Merry wants to get back to the dream world so Yumeji offers to help. It won't be easy though and they will have to confront other less friendly dream demonsΒ… something made harder when Merry learns that killing them means killing the dreams of their vessel. One such vessel is Isana Tachibana; a friend of Yumeji'sΒ… he is determined that she must not lose her dream of becoming an artist.

This thirteen episode series was rather enjoyable; the characters were good and there weren't too many of themΒ… you are never in any danger of wondering who is who! The frequent dream world sequences are nicely surreal and occasionally creepy but never as frightening as the similar worlds of the better known 'Madoka Magica'; this of course means this can probably be enjoyed by younger viewers. The character designs are good; I especially liked Merry's design even if her coat is a bit strange! Overall this was a good show that fans of the genre should enjoy.

These comments are based on watching the series in Japanese with English subtitles.

Once Again I Got Fooled By A One-Shot Anime With No Ending!
tesswysko13 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I had to put my ranking from what would have been an 8, down to a 6, and I think that is being generous! The reason is simple, this is another short, 13 episode series that never has an ending! They try to cover it up by making the characters seem positive about their situations, but they didn't even address the WHOLE PURPOSE of the series!!! I won't give the ending away, but I have to say this: the whole purpose of the series was to 1- find out WHO Merry was & why she was able to manifest in the real world, 2- send Merry home, and 3- find out who the Demon Lord is possessing & STOP HIM!!! NONE of these things were addressed, much less RESOLVED!! Thus leaves any viewer with a brain feeling incomplete and FURIOUS! So, if you want to watch a show just based on each episode, and don't care about the storyline and purpose, TO FOR IT! But if you watch shows far their actual storyline, then AVOID this series, because it will just leaves you wondering: "Why did I just spend (13X 21 minutes= 273Γ·60) 4.55+ hours of my life on this? I can't get that time hack, so I could watch an actual WORTHWHILE series (Attack On Titan, Black Clover, Fairy Tail, etc?)"

πŸ’It Wasn't Supposed to Put Me to Sleep, Was It? Β°5.2Β° Β°avgΒ° πŸ’―%πŸ”

DEM is about fighting in the world of dreamsπŸ’, waking and sleeping πŸ’ alike. Fujiwara Yumeji, who looks quite a bit like Sorata from Pet Girl of Sakura Hall (he had a thing for cats, too), has the ability to see this world including dream denizens & fighters. He stumbles onto Merry, who isn't entirely sure who she is. I love her look and her voice (Hilary Haag does the English dubbing). Merry does know she doesn't belong in the human world and as well as what she wants: She wants to go back home to the world of dreams. She also wants to kick every dream demon back to where they belong. Dream demons invade people's πŸ’ not only creating nightmares, but also parasitically stealing a person's hopes and aspirations, and there's been a breakout of this at school. As the early episodes flick by a horrible villain emerges. They will need help putting this baddie down.

Unfortunately, DEM is scattered and lackluster. It failed to maintain my interest. I cannot recommend it, and knowing what I now know, I wouldn't opt to watch it at all. There's much better anime out there. That's not to say it's awful. If it was truly awful I wouldn't have finished it. It's just not good enough.

DEM has bright flashes. The opening credit song starts with dongs that are very Michael Jackson's Beat It, in a fun way. There's more than adequate 🎸 riffs during the action followed by excellent πŸ₯. Love it. The English voice actors are always excellent. There's lots of quality touches, such as when Tachibana Isana is knocked out and her hair is spread out in a wing pattern that makes her look like an angel. It is appropo. One of the HS friends writes little poems about everything and it's very cute. The last episode is quite good with its epic battle, twists, and wrap-up {The manga goes on, so we don't get a 'final resolution'. I've read that manga publishers often do a 1-season anime to generate interest in the manga, so this is deliberate.} The writing is good, and the author tucked in some gems. A reference is made to 'flower buds from the despair that is lurking in every human being'. A few moments later Fujiwara Yumeji announces that his dream is to never give up, and that despair requires quitting. The answer is to never give up. πŸ‘πŸΎAmen. We'll also hear: "True strength is not in the body but in the heart." πŸ‘πŸ»Amen to that, too. One duo commits heinous acts in an effort to do good. Their plan ultimately fails and they are left in the refuse that they created in their ill-conceived plotting. Their experience reinforces that the end does not justify the means, and the wrong means can destroy us. DEM is far from worthless.

I'm still pretty new to anime - new enough that it was just this year when I recognized a voice actor by voice, from one anime to another, for the first time. DEM just provided a new thrill for me. Something in Tachibana Isana's eyes looked spookily familiar to the eyes of Linda, from Golden time (6.9). I looked up some animators and found that the animation director, Masahiro Fujii, was involved in both projects. I love the artistry of all filmed entertainment. It is primarily a visual medium, though every aspect is essential. Film will never match books in terms of detail. The visuals and sound ARE the tradeoff. From my sampling of anime rated over 6, I am continually impressed by how most shows have a familiar look but also elements that are unique to each one. That doesn't just happen: They take pains to provide us with visual goodies. Some of the DEM animation team worked on Pet Girl of Sakura Hall (7.3 - great show but it dies off slightly in the latter episodes), which explains why our ML looks so much like Sorata.

DEM is 1 season of 13 25-minute English dubbed episodes and rated 6.9 on MAL, which is generous. If you are looking at DEM currently, that means you might be checking out Hidive's catalogue. Here's some titles that have similarities to DEM that are more worth your time: Beyond the Boundary 8; Chaika The Coffin Princess 8.5: Kokkoku 7.5; Parasyte the Maxim 8.5; Is It Wrong To Pick Up Girls In A Dungeon 8; Made in Abyss 8.5; Princess Principal 8; Kokoro Connect 7; Land Of The Lustrous 8.

QUOTEπŸ“’

If you're kind and support your friends, then in turn, they can be kind and support someone else. That circle of friends, supporting eachother can become a kind of strength. At least that's what my grandfather always told me... My kindness is the best thing that I can give.

Dream eater

Warning: Spoilers
Plot copied from ANN High school student Yumeji Fujiwara has the ability to see people's dreams. Despite the visions never appearing clear or concrete, he is able to predict them by sensing the person's "aura." Normally, this skill is a fun trick to play on his classmates, but Yumeji only ever sees himself having the same nightmare every night.

To his surprise, the nightmare continues in the middle of the day even before Yumeji has fallen asleep. The unexpected event was triggered by a dream demon-an inhabitant of the world of dreams who wants to use Yumeji's body as a vessel to fully enter the real world. However, Yumeji is saved by the timely arrival of Merry Nightmare, another dream demon who can somehow physically manifest without a host and is instead trying to return to her own realm.

As more dream demons continue to push into reality, it is up to Yumeji and Merry to fight back against the invasion before everyone's nightmares materialize.

Yeah this series was an amazing ride from start to finish.

The art style was great

The dub was excellent especially coming from a Sentai Dub

The characters were definitely memorable

Love the theme song as well

If you want have an anime to watch around Halloween time I recommend this series.
