Great (and Gore) Restart of The Walking Dead
claudio_carvalho16 October 2012
Rick and the survivors are starving and searching for food and shelter since they are blocked on the road by the walkers. They reach an abandoned prison and they use the fences to protect themselves against the walkers. They lodge inside the prison cells and Lori is near to the delivery. Rick decides to look for supplies inside the prison, expecting to find weapons and ammunition in the armory store, food in the restaurant and medical supplies in the infirmary. However they are surprised by a great number of walkers and they have a casualty. Further, they make a surprising discovery.

After a long period without "The Walking Dead, its restart could not be better. This show is full of action and among the goriest of this series. I only regret the loss of one of my favorite characters, who will probably die. I hope the Third Season keeps the pace and action of this new beginning. My vote is nine.

Title (Brazil): "Seed"

Note: On 10 April 2016, I saw this show again.

A Fantastic Return!
g-bodyl15 September 2014
This is the first episode of the third season of AMC's brilliant, critically-favored horror drama, The Walking Dead. This is a fantastic first episode as we see the plight out characters are in, especially after leaving the farm. Though last season was mostly a slow-burner, we might be in for a change this season. This is action-packed, full of walker violence, lots of gore, and some intense character drama.

In this episode, "Seed," the gang has survived a long winter as they have been going house to house. Lori is now in her final stages of pregnancy, but it's clear Rick has been cold towards her. Rick sees a prison where he believes they will be able to seek shelter and find supplies, but they must fight through a horde of walkers on the prison property. But once inside, they realize they may not be alone.....

Overall, this is a fantastic beginning to what seems to be an excellent season. There is no shortage of action, but there is some moving character drama. I got emotional when Herschel's daughters sang a song their mother used to sing to them around the campfire. But as started from the previous season and heading into this season, Rick is becoming a cold-hearted person and we shall see how that plays out. I rate this episode 10/10.

Wonderfully balanced with equal parts tension, hard-fought wins, and suspense

Warning: Spoilers
I loved the opening sequence, portraying a great snapshot of what their life is like, and how they work cohesively as a team. I loved the way they took the prison. Once inside, the score does a superb job building the tension. They accomplished a lot as a team.

It was beautiful to see them finally get a win, have a relaxing night under the stars. I loved the moment between Daryl and Carol when she brought him some food--her teasing and him telling her to stop it. And then we're back to tension the next day. It's very accurate how in tune they are, noticing everything (who let the walkers out?)

The last scene--the inevitable surprise and Rick doing what he had to do... And what a way to introduce themselves to the locals... So poetic! One of my favorite episodes, and a great way to open the season!

It's back, and in great form
TheRedViper15 October 2012
Rick and his group of survivors have braved the winter and got through it, so now they're all looking for a new refuge, as the farm is no longer an option. After raiding one last house but gathering no real supplies, they find a large, seemingly empty prison, save for the many walkers stumbling around outside. After taking out all of the walkers, Rick leads the group inside the prison to take up temporary residence.

After the slow and tedious season 2, some may have begun to lose interest in The Walking Dead. Anyone that powered through to season 3 will be glad they did. The premier of the third season of AMC's critically acclaimed zombie survival drama is an action-packed one at that, and definitely one of the most entertaining episodes of the entire series, perhaps only rivaled by the pilot. Characters seem less irritating than they were in season 2, and the pace is vastly improved. Add to that exciting action scenes and a shocking ending and you have an excellent episode.

A great premier of what is sure to be a fantastic third season of The Walking Dead. 9 out of 10.

Great start, but a bit sad. 😢
XueHuaBingYu15 July 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Like the previous episodes of the walking dead, this episode is also a good one. It gives me excitements especially when they are entering into deeper section of the prison. It seems like the whole zombie group in that prison went to that place. The outer layer doesn't have zombie that much. But when they got into the inner layer of the prison, they found out there were a lot of zombies much more than they thought.

This episode is where someone went down. It's Hershel. But it's good that he's only lost a leg. Still, it's very sad. The prison is too big and roomy. Yet, it's still a prison. It gives some people feel uncomfortable. I mean they have faced a lot of bad things in the past and deserved a better place rather than a prison. A warm house and a proper bed. But they haven't got it yet. So, it's terrible for them.

Before I saw the scene where Hershel got bit, I wish no more person gets hurt. But my wish didn't come true. They made another to get hurt. It's really sad to see someone in that group gets hurt.

As for Lori, she's very emotional woman. I mean they are facing terrible things. So, it's very understandable that she might get those feelings. As Chinese saying, Ye Chang Meng Duo (the long night makes many dreams), it used to describe if a person thinks too much, they will have misleading thoughts. Just like that, Lori is having such condition. And I kind of happy to see the baby is about to be born. I wish the baby could survive even if the current condition isn't good.

I can't stop wondering why black woman who is with Andrea is having two zombies with her. They haven't explained this one yet. So, I'm so interesting in her. I mean in such condition, it's not good to have a zombie with her. She even have two. There's gonna be a story. I'm looking forward to it.

After I watched this episode, I hope Hershel would make it. He's a great guy. Losing a leg is the worst thing already. Don't let him die. *praying* Moreover, Lori needs him. So, I'm like let him live, please. 😁

Another thing I want to mention is the last scene. It gives a start of another story. Finally, we get to see the other people are still alive too. I just hope that they are good people unlike that group of those two people Rick killed.

All in all, it's a good start. So, I think this season 3 will also be good like previous two seasons. I can't wait to watch the rest of the episode. Well done, The Walking Dead Casts and Crews.

Great seed for a solid season!

Damn this opening is surprisingly good from what you would expect! I knew this episode was supossed to grab my interest but it ended up completely subverting my expectations!

After the end of season two, this episode starts right in the middle of it and barely lets go! There were trnse moments all the way through and even some elements of horror that brought me back to season one! I kind of feel like they know now what yhe fans want!

Great moments of character as well and I already see something great shaping up between some of them!

Michonne completely wins me over with her badass katangaskills

The end proves that anything can happen, it was very brutal and just makes me wanna watch the next asap!

Strong and gruesome start
snoozejonc25 October 2021
Seemingly eight or nine months after the second series, the survivors discover a prison they can potentially use as a base.

This is a strong introduction to the third series that sets the scene well and has some quite macabre horror sequences.

The story follows the characters securing sections of the prison and is quite action heavy, whilst at the same time establishes that certain characters have changed significantly since the previous episode. It is pretty exciting and suspenseful. I like that the writers show us the character development with behaviour and do not resort to lazy exposition dialogue.

If good zombie slaying action is what you tune in for this episode does not disappoint. The violence, gore, and action is frequent and full of innovative little touches.

There is some absolutely fantastic art design that helps keep the atmosphere creepy and puts the viewer on edge. Some of the set design, lighting, and cinematography inside the dark prison corridors is brilliant.

All performances are great as ever.

Survival fighting
TheLittleSongbird10 June 2018
Had heard nothing but great things about 'The Walking Dead' from friends and IMDb reviewers. It took a while to get round to watching, both from being busy and also not being sure whether it would be my cup of tea. Finally getting round to it a few years ago and slowly working my way through it, having had a very long to watch and review list, 'The Walking Dead' turned out to be very much my cup of tea and as good as the hype made it out to be, have found it extremely addictive.

Actually really liked Season 2, where the weakest episode ("Cherokee Rose") was very good still, but do share others' feelings about many episodes being on the talky side and moments of slowness. Season 3 however gets off to a brilliant start with "Seed". And a strong reminder of how Seasons 1-5 of 'The Walking Dead' to me were absolutely brilliant and seeing the show in its full glory days (Season 6 was uneven, Season 7 was a huge disappointment and am still debating whether to watch Season 8). It is as emotional, complex and as tense as one would expect , at the same time it has adrenaline and guts.

It still shocks me at how an intelligent, well-made (so much so that it is easy to mistake it for a film) show about zombies could be made when so many films have tried and failed abysmally to do so.

"Seed" is one of the tightest, most exciting, most action-packed, most suspenseful and most emotionally investable episodes of the show in general. One of the season's best and a show high-point.

Like all the episodes of the show, "Seed" is incredibly well made in the production values, with gritty and audacious production design, photography of almost cinematic quality, effects that look good, have soul and are not overused or abused and pretty frightening make-up that make the zombies even more terrifying. The music is haunting and affecting, having presence but never being too intrusive.

The writing generally is intelligent and thought-provoking, with lots of tension and emotional resonance and already showing signs of character complexity and multiple layer storytelling. The more eventful scenes, in one of the show's most eventful episodes, are thrilling and terrifying as well as uncompromising.

Appreciated the ever strong and still progressing story and character building, with some great development for Andrea. The human drama is balanced well with the action, which the episode wastes no time in getting to. Also that the pace is never dull or rushed. There is a lot of tension and the ending is unforgettably harrowing in the most gut-wrenching of senses.

Everything is tautly paced without rushing through the more important parts and emotionally complex. The world building is stunningly immersive and effective. Direction is smart and atmospheric while the show throughout has been strongly acted. Andrew Lincoln, Laurie Holden and Scott Wilson are particularly good.

Overall, brilliant Season 3 opener. 10/10 Bethany Cox

A Great Season Opener
slightlymad2230 October 2014
In an action packed start to Season 3 of AMC's "The Walking Dead" kicks off with the gang on a scavenger hunt. All the gang are in this episode Rick, Lori, Carl, Daryl (quickly becoming a favourite of mine), Carol, Glenn, Hershel, Maggie, Beth, T-Dog, Andrea along with the new character Michonne

Plot In A Paragraph: Set several months after the end of season two (as evident in Lori now being heavily pregnant and Hershel now sporting a full beard) the gang look for a new safe haven for the undead after the destruction of the farm. They stumble upon a prison, which, whilst not without it's problems they decide it should be their new "home".

In between the action, and there is lots of it. There is a nice scene between Daryl (Norman Redus) and Carol (Melissa McBride) and a nice little son. A long by a camp fire led by Beth. Emily Kinney has a lovely singing voice, but I'm not expecting to hear much more of it. We also get a better look at the hooded character with the sword who saved Andrea at the end of season 2. She is called Michonne and she is a total bad ass, carrying around two chained walkers with her.

Andrew Lincoln continues to impress as Rick just as Sarah Wayne Callies continues to annoy as Lori (even if she is attempting to build brides with Rick, after he behaviour at the end of the second season) IronE Singleton as T-Dog has a bit more to do, than at the end of last season where he either didn't appear at all or was just silent in the background. Steven Yeun is as reliable as ever as Glenn (a character I have a real soft spot for going back to the first season) like wise Scott Wilson as Hershel a character I really took to last season.

A great start to season 3 and a great restart to the show.

With this opening episode, all the second season's problems seemed to disappear.
ericrnolan13 May 2015
"The Walking Dead" returned to form tonight with a third season premiere that resurrected the magic of the first season, and even added more. I'd give this a 10 out of 10, and I was a guy who complained about Season 2. It's better than ever.

With this opening episode, all the second season's problems seemed to disappear. Our friends ARE OFF THE DAMNED FARM, and on the run, in a fast-paced horror story instead of a weird postapocalyptic milieu- type drama starring Old MacDonald, Good Cop and Bad Cop. There's action, tension, scares, mood, setting, atmosphere and decent characters – not another episode of "The Waltons," in which zombies occasionally visited.

Every major character is imperiled and has to fight. Even young Carl wields a gun and racks up a few kills. And it's a smart script, with just enough expository dialogue to explain what they're trying to do.

Seriously, for a horror fan, there's damned good fun here. The makeup and special effects are f***ing incredible. (Greg Nicotero is a genius.) There's also a few very nice creepy touches connected with the setting – including one group of zombies that are a little harder to kill. (I'm not sure if the writers knew this, but that device was also used by Dave Wellington in his "Monster Island" zombie novel.) And there are a couple of nice touches lifted straight out of the comic.

Rick used to be a boring boy scout and generic good guy who only seemed interesting as a foil for Shane. He's much more interesting here as a fallible, darker character. Carl, previously an annoying and redundant plot device ("Where's Carl?"), is damned cool this time out. Michonne, maybe a more difficult character to write and play, is just perfect.

Hell, this was better than one or two of the George A. Romero movies. Seriously, nice work, AMC!

A great introduction episode to a so far great season.
g-bella-546-4823044 December 2012
Warning: Spoilers
We come back to Rick and the crew. The group is tired of running and wants to find a place to live and to call home. They find the prison, and that's were they decide to make there new stomping grounds. Laurie and Ricks relationship (after the events that transpired in season 2) is still rocky. Even though Laurie is pregnant.

The opening scene of the episode shows the group scouting out a house to look for food. That scene says a lot to me. It shows that the group is close and has become a lot more lethal than the past season. Then, when they finally find the prison and get through some walkers they get some rest. The next day they go and scout the rest of the prison. When they get hit by a little group of walkers, Hershel gets bitten in the leg. Rick, being a leader that will do anything to protect his group, uses a saw to cut off Herschels leg. That way He won't turn into a walker.

Though, this episode does have some minor issues, I think for the first episode of the season, it gets the job done. So 8 out of 10.

A great start for the season
mm-3931 October 2012
Warning: Spoilers
The Walking Dead has a great start for season 3. The group needs to find a place to live. They need a place for a baby to be delivered. The group stumbles onto a prison and need to clean it out. There is another problem; some of the prisoners are still alive. What to do? How will everyone co-exist? The makings of a great main plot for the season. The good overall story line with the strong acting, and directing could make for a very good season 3. Seven out of ten stars. I hope season three does not get bogged down in sub personal stories like season two. I wonder what will happen with the splinter group. Will the two groups meet again?

"I'm doing stuff, Lori. Thaengs" -Rick Grimes. Amazing introduction to the season. Great opening scene of the group securing a house. The group taking the prison was awesome. Daryl's growing relationship with Carol is really sweet. Beth and Maggie's singing is pretty bad, but hey, I'm biased and hate all singing. Lots of cool things in this episode, seeing Coral and Carol with a gun, seeing the group fight the walkers in body armour and seeing Michonne and Andrea again. Why's Coral trying to rizz up Beth, there like a 3-4 age gap. Intense ending with the bottom of Hershel's leg being cut off and seeing the prisoners.

"Seed" focuses on the delicate threads of humanity that persist, highlighted by Lori's pregnancy and the group's collective efforts to carve out a semblance of normalcy
fernandoschiavi4 March 2024
"Seed" kicks off the third season of "The Walking Dead" with a relentless pursuit of hope amidst desolation. The episode reintroduces us to Rick and his group as they stumble upon the foreboding yet promising confines of the prison, symbolizing a potential new beginning. The narrative is masterful in its depiction of the group's dynamics, showcasing their evolution into a more cohesive and hardened unit. The juxtaposition of their desperate fight for a safe haven against the backdrop of the zombie-infested prison sets a grim yet hopeful tone for the season.

The episode doesn't shy away from the brutality of their new reality, with the clearing of the prison serving as a harrowing reminder of the stakes. This sequence is not only a testament to the group's survival skills but also a reflection on the psychological toll the apocalypse has taken on them. The introduction of the prison environment is a narrative goldmine, offering new challenges and deepening the exploration of themes such as leadership, sacrifice, and the human instinct for survival.

Amidst the chaos, "Seed" also focuses on the delicate threads of humanity that persist, highlighted by Lori's pregnancy and the group's collective efforts to carve out a semblance of normalcy. These moments of vulnerability and hope amidst the horror serve to humanize the characters, offering a poignant contrast to the relentless cruelty of their world. The episode skillfully balances action with character development, setting the stage for a season that promises to delve deeper into the complexities of survival in a post-apocalyptic landscape.

The closing moments, revealing the presence of other survivors within the prison, introduce a new layer of intrigue and potential conflict. This twist not only heightens the suspense but also expands the narrative scope, suggesting that the true challenge may lie not only in battling the undead but in navigating the intricacies of human nature itself. "Seed" is a powerful opener that reaffirms the series' commitment to exploring the depths of human resilience and the indomitable will to find light in the darkest of times.

Season three starts with the bloodiest episode yet
tbmforclasstsar14 October 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Well, we asked for it, and they gave it to us. After a (in my opinion) disappointing second season of the AMC series The Walking Dead, a season that spent way too much time on group drama and on the farm with lackluster conversation and love triangles, season three of the series started off with the bloodiest episode we have seen yet. So grab your notebook, abacus, or whatever you like to use for a zombie kill counter and start tallying folks. Season three of The Walking Dead looks like it is going to be pretty violent.

In the opening scene, we are reintroduced to our gang of survivors in a lengthy opener that seems to be the show runner's way of saying "Hey. You didn't like all the talking in season two? Well, here is a bunch of zombie kills, manic storming through a house, and panicked survivors that don't say a single word to each other. Happy?" While I never said I didn't want any talking, but I will say that yes, I was happy to get right to the action.

Because let's be honest. We know these characters. We understand their backgrounds. We have been through some pretty deep situations with them. Let's move this story and series along. Let's get to some new locations with new conflicts and see what kind of entertainment we can get.

And in the season three opener, titled "Seed," we are given plenty of progression. We have skipped the winter months that surely was a slow series of movements in cold weather from brief location to brief location. We see that Lori is now very pregnant and her baby could be coming within the first few episodes. And we finally come upon the groups next big test: a giant prison that would ensure food, medicine, and ammunition, but will take a great effort to fortify and overtake.

So let's get to the prison raid. First off, it was definitely the bloody, violent, and brutal slaughter that we expected when we saw the prison looming in the distance at the end of season two. But I have a couple of issues as far as logic and the reality of the world this show is set in.

If you are a group of survivors that is low on ammo, as almost every group of survivors always are, why wouldn't you just pound the gate for a while and have the zombies come to you? Yes, I understand there was an open gate that would allow even more walkers to enter the grounds of the prison, but wouldn't you want to knock out the bulk of the death eaters with close kills with your knives, axes, and pipes? Once Rick gets the gate closed, the group fires into the yard killing at least a dozen more zombies. That is a dozen plus bullets that you lose for your raid into the prison because you wanted to take them out the easy way from the guard towers. It just isn't smart at all.
