When I read that Mike Flanagan was planning to turn The Fall of the House of Usher into an eight-hour mini-series for Netflix I did a major double take. I’ve read the story, and I’ve seen an astounding number of takes on it, from Roger Corman’s classic to reimaginings like The Fall of Usher and Lady Usher. But there was no possible way I could see someone getting eight hours of material out of it.
And I was right, rather than an adaptation of one story The Fall of the House of Usher is an adaptation of Poe’s works en masse with Roderick and his sister Madeline Usher reinvented as heads of a Sackler like pharmaceutical empire.
The first episode, “Upon A Midnight Dreary” opens at the funeral of...

When it comes to their original television, Netflix is killing it. Whether it’s House of Cards or BoJack Horseman, the streaming site has continued to provide astounding, award-winning television on a near monthly basis. If only their original movies stood as high. While they’ve acquired some noteworthy features, including Beasts of No Nation and The Little Prince, the films they’ve produced themselves from the ground-up continuously fail to live up to their impeccable television standards. While it’s encouraging to see them venture into the sci-fi genre with Spectral, unfortunately, it doesn’t fare much better as it’s yet another rousing disappointment for the multi-platform company.

The film follows an elite military unit that goes on a mission in a war-ravaged European city and is greeted by ghostlike entities that seem immune to their puny human weapons. Who would you actually call if ghosts started running amok and doing real damage to a major city? Maybe the military, since the real Ghostbusters don't exist. That seems to be the idea behind Spectral, a sci-fi action movie in which an American Special Ops team is sent into a seemingly war-torn spot in Europe to fight what turns out to be ghost-like supernatural beings. The first trailer has arrived, and it looks like a combination of Black Hawk Down, Aliens and, yes, a heavy duty Ghostbusters. James Badge Dale, who has seen his share of more realistic historical combat fare in 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi and the HBO miniseries The Pacific, helps lead the mission as a brilliant government scientist. The movie...

How do you stop an enemy you can’t see coming? That’s the basis behind Spectral, Netflix’s original sci-fi feature, which got its first official trailer today.
Once set to be a summer tentpole release under Universal, Netflix took over the reigns. Not known for their extensive marketing campaigns, this first look at their expensive new sci-fi project comes a mere week before it hits the streaming site. It finds James Badge Dale, Emily Mortimer and Bruce Greenwood as a special-ops team fighting a race of supernatural aliens attacking the world. While the trailer doesn’t give away a lot in terms of plot, it does showcase a great deal in terms of scope, proving that Netflix is willing to pay top dollar to provide high-grade cinema to their audience. Here’s hoping Spectral‘s story is given as much care as its high-quality special effects were.

Netflix has just released the trailer for their original sci-fi action film Spectral and this flick looks freakin' rad! The film is set in the future of a war-torn European city, and it follows a team of soldiers who come together to defend the city from an otherworldly ghostly-type alien force. The movie definitely looks like it will be a blast to watch.
There are some super cool visuals in the film, and I really like the concept for it, especially the otherworld force that the army is trying to fight. It looks better than many of the big-budget movies that are being released in theaters.

Once set to be a wide release this past summer from Universal, they handed over the supernatural war film Spectral to Netflix, who will drop it next week. Not one for extensive marketing campaigns, the company has now released the first trailer for the film which follows a group of soldiers who are defending a city from an otherworldly force.
While its different elements look familiar, seeing sci-fi mashed up with a Black Hawk Down-esque scenario may prove to be entertaining. Add in the talents of James Badge Dale, Emily Mortimer, and Bruce Greenwood, and maybe this can be a respite from the fairly lackluster year of action cinema.
Directing by Nic Mathieu and also starring Max Martini, Clayne Crawford, Cory Hardict, Louis Ozawa Changchien, Jimmy Akingbola, Dylan Smith, Philip Bulcock, Royce Pierreson, Ursula Parker, and Mark O’Neal, check out the trailer below ahead of next week’s release.

"There's no limit to how far they can spread..." Netflix has unveiled an official trailer for the sci-fi action-thriller titled Spectral, described as "Ghostbusters meets Black Hawk Down." The plot is about a scientist who joins a Delta Forces unit that goes into a European city to investigate "mysterious phantom aggressors code-named Spectral". The cast includes Max Martini, Clayne Crawford, James Badge Dale, Emily Mortimer and Bruce Greenwood. To top it off, this film has a score by Junkie Xl, weapons made by Weta Workshop, and VFX by Weta Digital. It seems odd that this is being dumped straight to Netflix, but even better because it means we all get to see it starting next week. This looks cool, I want to check it out. While it’s going straight to Netflix instead of to your local multiplex as a big 3D spectacle as it was originally planned, the question remaining about “Spectral” is: Was it a movie that Universal and Legendary just didn’t think was commercially viable, or a dud they wanted to get off their hands?

Anyone wishing for a more grounded approach to ghosbusting may be interested in Spectral, Nic Mathieu's debut feature, which is being touted as "Black Hawk Down meets Ghostbusters". Produced by Legendary Pictures and Universal, the film was pulled from a theatrical run in favour of a worldwide Netflix release on December 9, 2016 according to Deadline. In the film, a brilliant scientist embarks on a deadly mission with a Special Ops team of Delta Force soldiers into a battle-scarred, war-torn city, where mysterious phantom aggressors code-named "Spectral" have been causing inexplicable civilians deaths. Of course, this gritty approach reminds me of Battle: La, a film that I really dug in it's approach but also found somewhat lacking on a story level. Director courts controversy in France amid tax credit stand-off.
Luc Besson is threatening to shoot his ambitious sci-fi picture Valérian and the City of a Thousand Planets in Hungary rather than France if regulations governing French film credits are not tweaked to accommodate the production.
The ambitious $180m production is not eligible for a 20% tax credit for French films, due to the fact it will be in English and star a mainly non-French cast, and does not qualify for the Tax Rebate for International Production (Trip) either because it is a local production.

We’ve been delighted in the last few years to see veteran character actor James Badge Dale break out to bigger and better things. The actor’s been a familiar face for a while thanks to “The Departed” and “The Pacific,” but racked up a string of high-profile credits and scene-stealing performances in things like “Shame,” “The Grey,” “Flight,” “Iron Man 3,” “The Lone Ranger” and “Parkland,” and finally looks to be graduating to lead roles, with horror-actioner “Spectral” due in 2016. Read More: The Breakout Performances of 2012 First up though is something smaller in scale, as Badge Dale takes the lead in indie Civil War drama “Echoes Of War,” which hits theaters next month. Written and directed by Australian helmer Kane Senes, it sees the actor play a haunted soldier who returns home to Texas from the conflict, only to spark up a conflict between his family and a cattle rancher neighbor.

Exclusive: Roy Lee’s Vertigo Entertainment has set up feature Pentacle at Lionsgate, based on an original pitch by Black List writer Ian Fried (Gaslight, The Ever After Murders). The story is described as a dark, Amblin-style thriller set in the world of magic. This marks Fried’s latest studio project after selling sci-fi pitch Prism to Paramount, which John Davis and Davis Entertainment are producing. He also sold supernatural action pitch Spectral to Legendary, which has James Badge Dale starring for director Nic Mathieu and is already slated for an August 2016 release.
John Sacchi and Jessica Switch are overseeing Pentacle for Lionsgate. Lee will produce for Vertigo alongside president of production Adam Stone. Vertigo’s John Powers Middleton is executive producing and VP Irene Yeung is overseeing for the company, which has a first-look deal with Warner Bros. and this year scored a $468 million global hit with The Lego Movie.

Recent events in America and the world at large have provided plenty of fodder for Hollywood adaptation. There have been movies about everything from hunting Osama Bin Laden in Zero Dark Thirty to the Valerie Plame scandal to weird biopics about George W. Bush. But it has been awhile since we had a good movie about scandal in America’s press corps. That gap will be filled with Truth, a movie about the scandal that eventually got Dan Rather in serious trouble with CBS.
Truth is based on the memoir by Mary Mapes and concerns the public brouhaha in 2004 following a CBS report that George W. Bush received special treatment while serving in the Air National Guard during the Vietnam War. The documents the report was based on were suspected of being forgeries. The upshot of the scandal resulted in serious damage to Rather’s reputation and the firing of his producer Mapes.

Get out your calendars, folks, as Universal/Legendary have just set release dates for two of their upcoming terror tales. Look for the yuletide anthology Krampus on Wednesday, November 25, 2015, and Spectral on August 12, 2016.
Michael Dougherty will be directing Krampus, based on an ancient legend about a pagan demon who punishes the wicked. The film is said to be similar in style to Dougherty’s cult hit Trick 'r Treat.
“The dark ancient origins of our holidays have always fascinated me,” Dougherty said. “I’ve been drawing twisted Christmas cards for well over a decade so it only made sense to bring some of that morbid yuletide fun to the big screen, and Krampus was the perfect mythology to do that. Christmas has been invading Halloween for far too long. It’s time to return the favor.”
Spectral, directed by Nic Matthieu, stars Emily Mortimer, James Badge Dale, Max Martini, and Cory Hardrict.

The studios today also announced the release date for "Spectral," a 3D action-thriller about "an elite Spec Ops team on a mission to take down an aggressive phantom threat that cannot be explained." Brad Furman (The Lincoln Lawyer) has come aboard to direct Sylvester Stallone in Scarpa. Written by Nicholas Pileggi (GoodFellas, Casino), the film will center on the story of real-life hitman Gregory Scarpa (Stallone), a man who murdered for the mob, suspected in the murders of his own biological family, then turned FBI informant. Avi Lerner's Millennium Films is producing with the hope of beginning production early 2015. Deadline Andrew Barrer and Gabriel Ferrari (Sabrina the Teenage Witch) have apparently come provide on set production rewrites to the Ant-Man script on an "as needed" basis following Adam McKay's most recent draft. Filming begins next month in Atlanta, Georgia. Latino Review Even though I thought this had already been confirmed as I've had the spin-off from James Wan's The Conjuring, Annabelle in my database as an October 3 release for some time, apparently yesterday it was made official.
