The days of the old CW network are over. Last season, Nexstar took over running the smallest broadcast network and most of the network's remaining original scripted series came to a close. Nexstar is choosing to focus on airing inexpensive acquired programming and unscripted shows in order to make the network profitable. The CW shows depend on ratings more than ever before and have to earn their keep to stay on the air. How many shows will be cancelled or renewed during the 2023-24 season? Stay tuned.

Chad Michael Murray cemented himself as an early 2000s dreamboat with roles in A Cinderella Story, One Tree Hill, Freaky Friday and more. Now, as a father of three, the actor says his kids are one of his biggest considerations when choosing new roles.
The Mother of the Bride star sat down with Numéro Netherlands ahead of the release of the Netflix movie and discussed his decades-long career, future projects and how he always puts his family first.
“I would say, a lot of material, especially over the past five to eight years since my son was born, I choose because I think one of the last things you really want is for your kids to be berated in school for what their parents are doing,” Murray told the publication. “I don’t want my kids going to school, being freshmen in high school, and Dad’s butt posted all over their locker.

Chad Michael Murray has a goal when choosing his projects.
“I don’t want my kids going to school, being freshmen in high school, and Dad’s butt posted all over their locker,” he said in a recent Numero interview. “That’s not fair to them, so making decisions for that has been great.”
Murray, who began his career in TV with appearances on One Tree Hill, Gilmore Girls, Dawson’s Creek and Riverdale, moved on to such films as A Cinderella Story, Freaky Friday, and Fruitvale Station. He then starred in Chosen, Sun Records and Sullivan’s Crossing before circling back to TV on the Marvel-abc series Agent Carter and a recurring role in Fox’s Star.
Becoming a father to an 8-year-old son, a 6-year-old daughter, and a months-old daughter he welcomed last August with wife Sarah Roemer has changed his outlook, he said.

The CW’s current slate looks drastically different than it did even just a couple of years ago. Formerly known for its quirky teen drama and superhero staples, the network, under its new owner Nexstar, is now largely focused on unscripted shows, lower-cost “content,” and sports. There are still some scripted projects left at The CW — All American, Walker, Canadian-American co-productions Sullivan’s Crossing and Son of a Critch, the final season of Superman & Lois, and upcoming shows Sherlock & Daughter and Good Cop/Bad Cop. But it definitely doesn’t feel like the same channel that was once home to Riverdale, The 100, Supernatural, and the Arrowverse.

Brad Schwartz, President of Entertainment at The CW, has “ambitious” goals.
As The CW moves away from only serving young adult audiences towards rivaling the Big Four broadcast networks – ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC – Schwartz knows he needs to find a hit to do that.
This, after all, is the man credited with helping Schitt’s Creek become an Emmy-winning smash.
“We recognize where we’re coming from. We’re the underdogs competing against Titans. But ultimately what we’re striving for is to have everyone stop writing big four networks and start writing big five network. We know it’s going to take some time, but that’s the goal,” he said at the top of his TCA press tour presentation.

“We’re ready for people to stop writing about the Big Four networks and start writing the Big Five,” announced Brad Schwartz, The CW’s president of entertainment, at the top of a Thursday morning meeting with TV press.
It’s an obvious aspiration for broadcast’s long-suffering stepchild, but the timing is a bit odd. The cachet of the “Big Four” — ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC — diminishes more and more each year, rendering the term more of a nostalgic catchphrase than an accurate representation of the true TV power brokers in the age of streaming saturation. Still, growth and a diversified (and, often, less expensive) programming portfolio is exactly what Nexstar Media Group has pursued after completing its acquisition of The CW in 2022. That’s involved a big gamble of the Saudi-backed Liv Golf league, canceling all but four scripted series in the inherited CW slate and banking big on acquisitions.

When Calls the Heart Season 11 is coming to Hallmark Channel in April. The new season of the family-friendly period drama will pick up after the dramatic conclusion of season 10 and looks like it will focus on a new romance between Elizabeth Thornton (Erin Krakow) and Mountie Nathan Grant (Kevin McGarry).
But Hope Valley is home to many more characters than Elizabeth and Nathan, from Elizabeth’s best friend Rosemary Coulter (Pascale Hutton) to enterprising businessman and inventor Ned Yost (Hrothgar Mathews). Could any of them ever get their own show? A Hallmark Channel exec recently weighed in on the possibility.

[Note: This post contains major spoilers for the Sullivan's Crossing Season 1 finale, "Sins of the Father."]
Just when it seems like the pieces are finally falling into place for the residents of Sullivan's Crossing, the Canadian drama goes and blows it all up. The revelations and cliffhangers come fast and furious in the Season 1 finale, "Sins of the Father," which brings Maggie's (Morgan Kohan) legal battle to a close, while also planting seeds for the currently-in-production second season. No one emerges from the Sullivan's Crossing finale unscathed — least of all Maggie's father Sully (Scott Patterson), who, in the episode's final minutes, suffers a medical emergency after his daughter leaves the campground and returns to Boston, seemingly for good.

Virgin River fans looking for more cozy romantic dramas might find their next favorite series in Sullivan’s Crossing. Both shows feature similar small-town vibes and romantic storylines, which isn’t surprising considering that each is based on a book series by author Robyn Carr and comes from the same producing team. But Sullivan’s Crossing, which premiered in October 2023 on The CW, isn’t just a carbon copy of the Netflix hit, those involved in the show have said.
‘Sullivan’s Crossing’ is ‘its own thing,’ star Morgan Kohan says
In Virgin River, a nurse named Mel Monroe moves from LA to a small town in Northern California after a personal tragedy. In Sullivan’s Crossing, a neurosurgeon named Maggie Sullivan moves to a small town in Nova Scotia after her personal and professional life in Boston is thrown into turmoil. Sullivan's Crossing premiered earlier this month on The CW, and the Canadian import has been delivering vintage small-town drama since.
Sullivan's Crossing Season 1 Episode 2, which aired this week, ended with quite the shocker in the form of Andrew (Allan Hawco) arriving in town.
Before that, Cal (Chad Michael Murray) walked Maggie (Morgan Kohan) home after drinks at the bar.
The scene found Andrew threatened by Cal walking his girlfriend home, so naturally, my first question to series creator Roma Roth was: How threatened should Andrew be?
"Well, [Cal] is played by Chad Michael Murray," Roth shared with a laugh, adding, "So I think very, but I also think Andrew has his own baggage he's carrying around from a divorce."
Roth says that Andrew was feeling threatened before he even arrived in town because he was struggling with the fact that his girlfriend fled Boston.

The decision to pick up Sullivan’s Crossing wasn’t a huge departure for the CW; romantic, field-good series like Hart of Dixie, Life Unexpected and Everwood have long been hallmarks of the network..
Still, the show was immediately labeled as a cheap import because it first launched in Canada in March, where it became CTV’s highest-rated drama launch on over two years. It is produced by Reel World Management in association with CTV with Fremantle as global distributor. It’s from Roma Roth and Christopher E. Perry, the team behind Netflix’s Virgin River.
“We have to be entrepreneurial. We can’t just write a $10 million per-episode check for a show with some dragons in it,” President Brad Schwartz said during the upfronts in May.

Sullivan's Crossing is blossoming into one of the best dramas of the fall, and it's all thanks to the fully realized world and characters who feel like real people with real-world problems.
Maggie's conflict about returning to Boston or staying put in Sullivan's Crossing shone through Sullivan's Crossing Season 1 Episode 2 as she learned more about her past and set out to prove she wasn't to blame for her patient's death.
Maggie's situation is tough because, as a medical professional, she knows that accepting liability for the teenager's death will define the rest of her career.
That's why it's easy to understand her attempts to question her methodology and whether she would have changed her approach.
Truthfully, the hospital was inundated with patients when the teenager arrived, but it seemed like Maggie did her due diligence and didn't rush things.

It was a relatively busy night for the broadcast networks, featuring several premieres.
We'll start with Magnum P.I.
The canceled drama returned with 3.5 million viewers and a 0.3 rating.
The series is up a bit in the demo and total viewers vs. its April midseason finale, and with word-of-mouth strong, there's a good chance the series can grow from here.
What a difference a decent timeslot makes, am I right?
Quantum Leap Season 2 kicked off earlier in the night at 2.9 million viewers and a 0.3 rating in the demo.
The time-traveling drama reached its best total viewer tally since its series premiere in September 2022.

The demo tally is on par with its freshman average, so maybe this move to the earlier timeslot could secure the show's future.
