Pinocchio turned on its head
TheLittleSongbird4 January 2018
When 'Once Upon a Time' first started it was highly addictive and made the most of a truly great and creative premise. Really loved the idea of turning familiar fairy tales on their heads and putting own interpretations on them and the show early on clearly had clearly had a ball. Watched it without fail every time it came on and it was often a highlight of the week. Which was why it was sad when it ran out of ideas and lost its magic in the later seasons.

For me, "The Stranger" is one of the best episodes of Season 1. There is very little wrong with it, but to me the way Regina tries to spite Mary Margaret (or at least that seemed to be the reason, it was not as clear as it could have been) seemed somewhat extreme, even for her that was cruel. Emma is also far too stubborn here and it's getting tired.

Actually totally understood Henry's hate towards Regina and what he says to her is what we are thinking too. Really loved Henry's chemistry with Jennifer Morrison's Emma and Jared Gilmore does a very good job here.

The twist involving August's real identity was clever and not frustrating at all. This time, it's Pinocchio who gets the back-story, fairy tale flashback treatment and his story getting turned on its head. It's also one of the more imaginative, twisty and compelling ones of the first season from personal opinion. How it integrates with the Storybrooke parallel is handled beautifully too.

Meanwhile the other subplots are just as well done, liked what was done with Geppetto (a less kind treatment of the character to usual) and with Snow White and the Blue Fairy. Baby Emma is adorable. Regina is in full on bitchy mode without being too pantomimic.

Visually "The Stranger" is a very handsomely mounted episode, settings and costumes that are both colourful and atmospheric, not too dark or garish and never cookie-cutter. The effects are also above average, not exceptional but not bad. It is photographed beautifully and there is some make-up that suited the characters perfectly. The music is haunting, ethereal and cleverly used with a memorable main theme.

Regarding the writing, "The Stranger" shows that it really has come on a long way. There is far less corn and instead the humour, emotional and tense elements and the balance between them are getting stronger. The story is absorbing.

Lana Parrilla and Eion Bailey are the high points of the cast with the meatiest material. Ginnifer Goodwin continues to charm, Jennifer Morrison is growing as Emma all the time despite the character's stubbornness and Jared Gilmore shines in his scenes with Morrison and Parrilla.

In summation, great episode and one of Season 1's best. 9/10 Bethany Cox

Jerk Kid gets Jerkier
danajs2419 August 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Why does Emma have to wait until her 28th year? Sounds a lot like they were trying to write the story for the actress, who isn't someone I'd write an entire show around. More importantly, why does Henry hate Regina? He's a complete jerk to her non-stop, and she seems to be a fair mother for the most part. When the show starts he already hates her, and she hasn't even done anything that we know of yet. Geppeto (sp?) is also a real feisty guy, not a huge fan of that. Rough episode for me all in all, many characters I don't like were the center of this one. Hopefully there's more action in the future episodes. Baby Emma was awful cute however, which helped the appeal of the show.

I am still on tears

Warning: Spoilers
Why i don't like Pinocchio? Because I cry from the beginning to the end all the time, all Pinocchios. Its worst than cut onions. This episode was priceless, for me the best episode ever, will die waiting for the next season and I want punch Emma in the face and honestly after I found out why Regina hates Snow White so much, I kind of understand her. This series caught me so badly, I am a supernatural fan, but Once upon a time has all my love and respect. Well, as I must write 10 lines minimum, cant leave without bring up how much Robert Carlisle and Lana Parrila add to the show, both of them bring so many different emotions, that I wish in the end both get their happiness, Regina with her father and beloved and Mr Gold to don't be the dark one anymore and have his son back and also marry Bella, as he apparently is the Best here.

Smart Mr. Charming
gkeith_130 April 2012
Warning: Spoilers
First August pretended to be Mr. Gold's son. Why? Then he is Geppetto's son. The real boy, after Pinocchio, turned from blonde hair to brown hair. The foster father was so obnoxious, so horrible; Pinocchio should have decked him before he left town with the other boy. Too bad he had to leave Emma behind. Regina trying to bed Prince Charming; how horrid. David should have vomited the lasagna; right in her face.

When Pinocchio was becoming a real boy, I immediately thought of Timmy on "Passions"; he was a doll who wanted to become a real boy (and at that time, I had thought of the Pinocchio story, lol). Timmy finally got his wish to become a real boy; IMO he was really the star of that show. He had all kinds of exciting adventures after that, before the character and actor passed away from/during heart surgery.

Emma taking Henry away in her VW at the end was awesome. They were actually leaving Storybrooke, and Henry said that that is forbidden. I hope they get to stand their ground and defeat the ugly, stupid Regina. Yes, Regina is soooooooo stupid, even though she thinks she is sooooooo smart. Henry is right. GOOD will win. Apparently, evil will continue to engage in full battle, since we are told of a new season next fall. Evil never really wins, but it surely will not give up for lack of trying.

I hope, by some magic, that the other sheriff comes back. It could be a duel for the hand of Emma, between he and August.

Since when did Mr. Gold/Rumpelstiltkin ever go to law school? Emma wants him to take her case? Is he really more powerful than Regina/the Evil Queen? In a case, there have to be witnesses. Most Storybrookians are fearfully afraid to rat on Regina, including Sidney and Archie.

Note about Archie and Henry having dinner. Hmmm, Regina still up to her treachery. Of course, the inside of the note was blank, yet the outside was addressed to Mom. Was that more of her bad magic? She still did not succeed in whittling down the illustrious Mr. Charming, if only to further hurt Snow White/Mary Margaret.

Good WILL win.

Things have been getting better in this neat episode
After concluding the Mary Margaret trial subplot, things have been getting better in this neat episode. Yes, some of the writing came across as a bit sub-par, but that's my only quibble. Most of the writing is superb especially in the scene where Henry stood up to Regina and said this awesome line.

"No matter what you do, Snow White and Charming will be together. The curse will end. Good will win." Jared Gilmore, who plays Henry, does a great job in delivering that line and it shows that the kid does have potential after all. Only time will tell when I review the later episodes. Anyway, the acting is still great, the pacing is solid and doesn't drag, the sets and scenery are still gorgeous, the directing and editing is terrific, and Mark Isham continues to bring some atmospheric music to the entire episode as in the previous episodes. So, overall, almost as perfect, but still a great episode. :)
