Slave Suffering
A_Kind_Of_CineMagic30 September 2020
This is quite a dark and grim episode as we see a peaceful race suffering in slavery and our heroes struggle to find and rescue them.

Scenes of cruelty are hard hitting for a family animated show and the subject is powerful, especially a death scene for one female slave who commits suicide rather than face further torture. I think that is a really good thing as it raises important subjects and tells a moving story that makes young viewers think about suffering of slaves.

In order to heighten the drama our Jedi heroes are made to suffer a defeat which is done convincingly enough with their opponents needing to work hard to get the better of Anakin in particular. And while I did feel our Jedi heroes could certainly have exploited ways to escape or deal with enemies more effectively at certain points their predicament was believable because they needed to find the enslaved people and rescue them not just save themselves. They risk death and endure torture to try to achieve their intended rescue mission. A couple of bad choices in their actions just land them in deeper trouble.

So misgivings I initially had about Jedi being captive without escaping were plausible when I thought it through and this was a very powerful story and very dark, hard hitting episode with meaningful themes.

My rating: 8.5/10.

Slaves of the Republic

This is a well written episode depicting the cruelty of slavery, but I can't help noticing the hypocrisy. The entire Star Wars universe contains intelligent, sentient beings treated as slaves by all sides: droids. It's quite simple: if it's wrong for sentient organic creatures to be owned, bought and sold, then it's wrong for thinking machines to be bought and sold. It's a shame that in over 40 years of Star Wars, no one has even thought about it.

Hated Ahsoka as an enslaved person

I am still scarred by seeing my beloved, feisty Leia in that gold bikini back in the 80s. We have so few female characters, and yet here again the awesome woman is presented in haram-fantasy mode. It doesn't speak to the horrors of slavery, it speaks to how easy it is for Hollywood to use the degradation of women as a storyline, even (or especially) in fantasy worlds that can be anything they want.

The xenophobia is also really gross. Somehow in this show the biggest scum societies never have blue eyes and an American or English accent. The history of our world proves there's plenty of scuminess and heroism everywhere.

I love this show but hate having to accept this stuff over and over again. I hope we get new kinds of writers and showrunners, or some who update their ideas, in the future (and I do believe later shows and movies have done a much better job, so credit to the franchise). Seeing a fantasy society where women barely exist in the halls of power is a constant reminder of how grotesque and damaging that same oppressive and crippling imbalance is in real life.
