The obese king of a distant planet, eating away the poor people's food, taking sex from the young women of the villages his robots plunder, and about dead due to his weight and ill use of his body holds a tournament to solidify a brand new man to take the throne. Combatants go at it in the medieval fights as little robots ask why they should be king and what they would do for the kingdom after winning. Michael Jai White returns to Metal Hurlant Chronicles for "King's Crown" as a warrior with ties to the current fat king, perfectly capable of winning the tournament and gets to flex his muscles and fighting skills in impressive fashion. The episode purposely, though, proposes Scott Adkins as the hero to take the throne and even though White seems like the obvious star of "King's Crown" he has an agenda besides winning. The slow-motion sword and fists fight sequences are a bit too reminiscent of Spartacus which diminishes their value, but there's no doubt that White is a badass. Adkins has the physique, cut for a Greek statue, but White towers over him in the charisma department. How White disposes of Adkins' friend so easily is really awesome
and, truth be told, White looks really superior to Adkins as well. There's no reason White couldn't have been the focus of this episode but the twist regarding the king's refusal to let go of his throne even after death couldn't have worked so well if he was.
