Malaysia’s Astro Shaw is bringing a slate of new productions to Afm, headed by sci-fi road comedy Nova, as it ramps up production with an eye on international markets. Nova, about a filmmaker who convinces his friends to chase UFOs across Malaysia, recently received its world premiere at the Tokyo International Film Festival. The film is directed by Nik Amir Mustapha, whose debut feature Kil won best film, screenplay and supporting actress at the Malaysian Screen Awards 2013. Nova’s ensemble cast includes Bront Palarae and Amerul Affendi, who both had roles in hit action movie Bunohan, and Iedil Putra (Kl Zombie). The film arm of pay-tv giant Astro Malaysia Holdings, Astro Shaw is also unveiling two films currently in post-production – action comedy Police Evo and romantic melodrama The Sky Of Love. Directed by Ghaz Abu Bakar, Police Evo stars comedian and TV star Zizan Razak, who has also appeared in hit films such as Kl Gangster, along...

There was a time not so long ago when - buoyed by the massive success of Syamsul Yusof's Kl Gangster - that producers talked boldly in public about how they intended to cast Thai martial arts star Tony Jaa in the sequel. That never happened but the point was made: Kl Gangster had opened its backers' eyes to the potential that a well made action film has to draw audiences both at home and abroad and their goals were larger than just the domestic audience.Well, Yusof and company are back with that promised sequel and it looks bigger in every way than the original. If there has ever been a more polished, larger scale action picture made in Malaysia then I certainly have no idea...

Though Malaysia's Woo Ming Jin will likely always be best known internationally as the arthouse auteur responsible for The Tiger Factory and Woman On Fire Looks For Water, he has shown himself more than willing to also dip into populist genre fare back home in Malaysia. 2010 found footage effort Seru laid on copious amounts of blood and his next effort teams the director with popular local comedian Zizan Raja Lawak (Kl Gangster, Kapoww!!) for horror comedy Kl Zombi.Yep, the undead have arrived in Kuala Lumpur and while the very specific comedy style of Lawak will likely limit the export value of the film - comedy very seldom translates well between cultures - the first teaser for the film promises a good amount of undead...

Malaysia has a new hard core action movie on the way so of course we are interested. Adi Putra (who cut his action teeth in the likes of ‘Kl Gangster’ & ‘Kl Gangster 2’) is the man dishing out the punishment in a movie about - the best reason for a good fight pic - revenge. The Malay censors have given ‘Langgar’ an 18 certificate, so lets get ready for some brutal. Langgar’ opens April 11. Synopsis: "Langgar" tells the story of Nizam (Adi Putra), who seeks justice for the death of his beloved wife, Aina (Nadia Heng) and his child, whom she was pregnant with at the time, as a result of rape and murder by a gang. It is Nizam's solemn promise to himself that everyone involved in the rape-murder must be wiped from the face of earth. Nizam is introduced to Radzi's (Namron) gang by Khairul (Bell Ngasri), an old friend.

Chalk this up to wishful thinking on the part of Kl Gangster producer Datuk Yusof Haslam, assuming there's anything to it at all.An enormous local success, Kl Gangster packed theaters in Malaysia with enthusiastic audiences, a fact that has led to a sequel. A prequel, actually, so that they can keep popular characters who didn't make it to the end of the original, but you get the point: Successful film leads to increased budget and expectations on the follow up.Director Syamsul Yusof has reportedly invited prominent local actor Rosyam Nor to join the cast and according to local tabloid Berita Harian, Ong Bak star Tony Jaa has been offered a role as well.Tracking the story from this point is like a game of broken...

Before we all get too excited for right now this will stay very firmly tucked in the rumours box, but if true this could be immense! As one of the most successful Malay films action, it is perhaps no surprise that "Kl Gangster" is set for another instalment; however, it comes as a surprise that the local gangster movie will “most likely” feature the "Ong Bak" star, Tony Jaa. Datuk Yusof Haslam, producer of "Kl Gangster" has recently announced that the next instalment will be a prequel instead, and will mark the return of the original cast such as Aaron Aziz, Adi Putra, Shoffi Jikan, Sheera Iskandar and Zizan. Klg told the story of two brothers who got involved in the seedy world of gangsters. Malek, who learnt his lesson after being betrayed by his own gang started by Shark, soon found himself forced to return to the underworld that he left behind.
