As it begins its 17th year on YouTube, Simon’s Cat is buying into a beloved format. The feline animation hub led by Simon Tofield has launched a “focus music” video that resembles the chill streams hosted by Lofi Girl.
Since arriving on YouTube in 2007, Simon’s Cat has entertained 6.1 million subscribers with whimsical cartoons that detail the titular pet’s hijinks. The latest Simon’s Cat upload is a bit different from the channel’s typical fare. The 41-minute-long video is devoid of feline misadventures. Instead, Simon’s Cat naps on a desk while the viewer enjoys a continuous stream of music.
Though the musical genre and format of the video suggest a collaboration with the Lofi Girl label, “Focus Music to Work and Study to” was actually born out of a partnership between two properties of Banijay Brands‘ U.K. division. The France-based production and distribution company picked up a controlling stake...

As Annecy rounds the final bend on its biggest edition to date, with a tantalizing promise of a brighter future for animation in much of Europe, Marjolaine Perreten’s 29-minute film “Pebble Hill” (“La Colline aux cailloux”), part of its TV Films competition, has been one of the multiple gems to come out of it.
Minimalist in design, a trademark of the young Swiss filmmaker’s unique style, the animation, which has already won an award at Hamburg’s Mo & Friese Kinder Kurzfilm Festival, is charming and tender, the 29-minute film, produced by renowned Swiss production company Nadasdy Film in Geneva, a producer on “No Dogs or Italians Allowed,” and France’s Les Films du Nord, tells the story of a family of shrews that after loosing their home due to the breaking of an upstream dam embark on a journey alongside an old shrew to find the Pebble Hill.

Simon’s Cat has now spent 15 years as one of YouTube’s most mischievous little felines. Now, the animated animal is expanding its reach in the field of licensing. Its parent firm Banijay Brands (which is part of Paris-based media empire Banijay Group) has extended its partnership with Tactile Games, which will create more mobile titles inspired by Simon’s Cat.
Banijay and Tactile have inked a six-year deal that will give the publisher the licensing rights for Simon’s Cat games. So far, Tactile has launched three titles based on Simon Tolfield‘s animated, four-legged troublemaker. Those games have the themed titles Crunch Time, Pop Time, and Story Time, and they’ve combined to collect more than 20 million downloads in all.
The success of those Simon’s Cat games is no surprise, given the size and dedication of the YouTube channel’s fanbase. Tolfield’s amusing cartoons have received more than 1.4 billion lifetime views,...

Kitties all over the world, join paws. Start a meow train, meow train … because it’s #InternationalCat Day.
We’re not even halfway through this joyous holiday created to recognize the dominion felines hold over the entire Earth, and the Internet is already freaking out.
Since the World Wide Web was essentially created to encourage the viral spread of cat cuteness, it isn’t surprising that #InternationalCatDay is trending on Twitter. And this trend comes bearing gifts (and gifs)!

Simon Tofield has entertained internet audiences since way back in 2008 by way of Simon's Cat, an original online video program he created featuring an incredibly expressive, kinda anthropomorphized, black and white, cartooned feline with a knack for getting into physically comedic situations. Today, the Simon's Cat video catalog is composed of roughly 70 short films of a maximum length of about 180 seconds each. And those three-minute snippets of Simon's cat's life have elicited smiles and genuine laughs from a YouTube audience that's than 3.4 million subscribers strong who have - along with the rest of the internet - collectively watched the series' videos more than 633 million times.
That kind of popularity has encouraged Tofield and his team to add no less than 18 physical books and a small collection of fine art prints, human paraphernalia, feline paraphernalia, ceramics, plush toys, and other themed merchandise to the Simon's Cat universe. But soon Tofield and...

The campaign to raise money for a Simon's Cat colour short film has collected £88,000 in under a week.
The Simon's Cat animation studio is looking to fund a special 11-minute episode about going to the vet.
Cartoon creator Simon Tofield said: "In the messages we receive from fans, a film about preparing for and visiting the vet is definitely the most common request.
"It's a deep subject to explore, rich with the potential of loads of humour which is why we feel we'd like to make this our first broadcast length episode in colour! I am so grateful to our fans for their wonderful support!"
The money, which is being raised via Indiegogo, will go towards creating the film.
The official campaign website states: "'Off to the Vet' tells the story of how Simon's Cat instinctively knows a trip to the vet is imminent and the lengths he'll go to avoid it.

Simon Tofield’s path to internet stardom began in 2008 when the iterated off of one of the internet's most perennially popular themes: cats. The British animator uploaded a one-minute-and-37-second cartoon of a crudely drawn but oh-so-cute feline trying to wake up its human owner in a variety of both animal and anthropomorphic ways. The video’s since received over 47 million views and launched a burgeoning animation franchise under the banner of Simon's Cat. It includes a YouTube channel now in possession of over 2.7 million subscribers and 471 million aggregate views, no less than four books, and a relationship with one of the most renowned animation executives in the business. Fred Seibert’s Channel Frederator Network today announced Simon’s Cat has joined its animation-oriented YouTube multi-channel network. Tofield’s channel is the most recent addition to the McN that currently boasts more than 30 million views a month across its over 130 networked channels,...

New York — They frolic in empty boxes and stick their heads under faucet streams of water. They dance on tippy toes and fly through the air with Pop-Tarts. They play piano wearing little frocks and get tickled to distraction to the delight of millions on YouTube.
I speak, of course, of the cat stars of the Internet, a place filled with felines and their wacky uploading humans since the dawn of bandwidth. Now, after years of viral viewing, they're coming into their own in lucrative and altruistic ways.
The first Internet Cat Video Film Festival drew a Woodstock-esque crowd of more than 10,000 – people, that is – to a Minneapolis art museum in August. Police closed a span of highway clogged with cars trying to get to the Walker Art Center for the free outdoor slate of 80 videos culled from 10,000 submissions that covered the simple, funny moment to polished animations and works made by trained filmmakers.
