Is Gary Janetti ready to make Bravo history? The writer, producer and Bravo superfan revealed whether he'd be down to join the cast of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills with his husband, stylist Brad Goreski, in an exclusive interview on E! News' Daily Pop on May 3. "I don't know. I don't think we would provide the kind of 'rama that's needed on the show," he said about becoming the franchise's first Real Husbands. "We're not very dramatic." Hosts Justin Sylvester and Loni Love think otherwise, pointing out his prior Bravo reality TV experience on It's a Brad, Brad World, which ran for two seasons from 2012 to 2013. But despite the show's...

Hollywood — You might not have heard the name Nicole Perlman much as it pertains to Marvel properties, but she's a big reason why "Guardians of the Galaxy" will be making its way to theaters next weekend. She toiled away as a screenwriter for a few years after her days at Nyu, cooking up projects with a science bent because that's where her passions lie — projects like "Challenger," a fascinating account of the investigation of the Challenger Space Shuttle disaster written as a love letter to Nobel Prize-winning physicist Richard Feynman. Then, she made her way to the comic book giant under the company's now-defunct screenwriting program and plucked the intergalactic heroes from obscurity, setting them on a crash course for the silver screen. It may be largely James Gunn's colorful vision on that screen, but it's definitely Perlman's passion that helped bring the property to the table in the first place.

So how can you stay true to yourself as a writer, especially when one is supposed to be imitating another writer’s voice? For one thing, one can stop chasing fads or writing what one think the showrunner might want to see. Jane Espenson, who has written for Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Battlestar Galactica and Game of Thrones and has also created her own Web TV show, Husbands, talks to me about how important it is to trust your own instincts and your own good taste. She is not the only one: Jenny Bicks encourages “writing what you want to write, going towards the love” and Tom Fontana goes as far as to very simply state that “being successful is being faithful to oneself.”
Tom thinks that people often look to being successful as opposed to being faithful: “And when I say faithful, I mean faithful to themselves and to the truth within them.

Husbands – CW Seed
Last year The CW launched an online distribution platform called CW Seed. As the name implies, this online-only channel was intended to operate as a seeder pipeline. Web series could be produced relatively inexpensively and popular shows with proven concepts could be drafted up to the majors by landing a spot on The CW itself.
CW kicked off their online channel with four projects. One of of those was Husbands, created by Brad Bell and Jane Espenson, a show we’ve written a lot about here at TheBacklot. Another web series was called Backpackers.
Backpackers – CW
The seeder system seems to be working because Variety today reported that CW has promoted its first web series from CW Seed to the main network. They’ve bypassed the pilot process and ordered 12 TV episodes of Backpackers. That is great news for Backpackers, but it’s curious that CW Seed...

Geek favourite Amy Acker has been cast as Agent Coulson's mysterious Cellist in Marvel's Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.
It was only a matter of time. With post-Angel roles in Joss Whedon's Dollhouse, The Cabin In the Woods, and Much Ado About Nothing, and guest appearances in David Greenwalt's Grimm and Jane Espenson's Husbands, Amy Acker hasn't been reluctant about reuniting with her Buffy spin-off family. Now it's been announced that Acker has been cast in Marvel's Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Acker's latest reunion sees her join the Whedon/Tancharoen ABC venture in the role of Agent Coulson's beloved cellist girlfriend. The character also goes by the name of Audrey, we learn, and is a talented musician unaware that Coulson is still alive, and being protected by him from a powerful threat. Acker will feature in at least one episode of the ABC series.

In comics news this week, Bill Watterson, the creator of Calvin & Hobbes, won the prestigious Angoulême Grand Prix (a kind of lifetime achievement award) at the biggest comic convention in the world, the Angoulême International Comics Festival. The famously reclusive comics creator was not in attendance but the award is the second time an American has won, the last being Art Spiegelman, the creator of Maus, who won 2 years ago. Calvin & Hobbes ended in 1996 but Watterson’s anti-commercial artistic integrity and the quality of his work has won him many admirers and the strip continues to be popular to this day.

I recently had the opportunity to interview Jane Espenson and Brad Bell about their new web series Husbands. They also shared their insights about Buffy, writing, and what makes a series pop.
FEARnet: How did Husbands get started?
Jane Espenson (Je): It got started because Brad had an idea. He's a young writer I really admire, and I really respect his ideas. He had this idea about doing a new sitcom for the marriage-equality age, and that's worth doing.
FEARnet: I was reading a bit about that and wondered if, as the creators, you faced any of the same controversy that your characters face in some of the episodes?
Je: Not so much, people are really loving it. (To Brad) I think in your life you faced some of that.

This interview contains spoilers for Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Amber Benson has been up to a lot lately - writing books, acting, and directing - but when we sat down with her, we couldn’t help but ask about the first thing that endeared her to us: her part in the sweetest and most tragic relationship on Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
The Tara-Willow relationship, especially the way that the two characters eventually got together was one of the greatest pieces of television, especially Lgbtq television. Part of the reason was that it was so natural. Unlike other TV shows, Willow’s coming out was not publicised. Quite the opposite: you guys had us believing that Tara was loving in vain and that Willow...

On Monday night in North Hollywood, the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences hosted a night devoted to how the television landscape has advanced (or not advanced as in some cases) in the 10 years since the book The Prime Time Closet: A History Of Gays and Lesbians On TV was first published. The book, written by Stephen Tropiano, highlighted the landmarks of gay representation on the small screen.
The panel included Dan Bucatinsky (Scandal), Andrew Rannells (The New Normal, Girls), Amber Tamblyn (plays a lesbian on Two And A Half Men), Sherri Saum (The Fosters), Wilson Cruz (GLAAD, My So Called Life), trans actress Laverne Cox (Orange Is The New Black), Sean Hemeon (Husbands) and executives from Bravo and Here TV.

A couple of years ago, I was wandering around San Diego Comic-Con when I stumbled across a signing going on at the California Browncoats table. There sat Jane Espenson - writer for wonderful treats like Buffy, Battlestar Galactica, Torchwood, and Once Upon a Time - with two young men. I sidled up to one of the guys and asked what the signing was for. Husbands, he told me, a webseries comedy about marriage equality.
The three of them agreed to an interview (how could I pass up an opportunity to interview Espenson on one of her new projects?) and we talked about their plans for the show they were just about to shoot. Set just after marriage equality becomes law across the entire United States (and thus still,...

I sat down with Jane Espenson Sunday afternoon at New York Comic Con to talk about her rise to prominence in television, how she chose her projects from Buffy the Vampire Slayer to Once Upon a Time, and how her work on Husbands is changing how TV portrays gender dynamics in gay couples.

Glee’s Alex Newell is scheduled to perform at Gay Days in Anaheim, the smaller west coast cousin to the big party in Orlando.
The final chapter in this batch of Husbands the Series episodes is out (there are more episodes coming), giving us the big reveal of how the rewedding turned out. Personally, I’m protesting the lack of Sean Hemeon’s abs in this series. I plan to write a very whiny and slightly creepy email to Cheeks, Sean, and Jane.
In a surprising development, all 33 county clerks in the New Mexico have joined the Aclu lawsuit for marriage equality. Honestly, I figured there would be at least one holdout. This will make it harder for the supreme court to stall on the issue.

From Buffy to Once Upon A Time, Jane Espenson has written some great TV but her proudest accomplishment is the web series, Husbands, now starting a new season on a new home, The CWSeed. Jane talks about why the show just keeps growing, plus the Alluring Amber Benson fills us in on her guest shot on Husbands and that classic Buffy Musical. And Shark Fever isn’t cooling off. SyFy tosses out another film in the genre, Ghost Shark. We talk to the writer/director about how Sharknado was just a lead in for his film. Oh yeah, and Affleck will be Batman. Just deal with it.

The CW has long had a significant presence in the world of original web series, and its latest project will increase its involvement in the online video. The TV network has launched CW Seed, an online-only studio and distribution platform. At launch, the CW Seed slate includes four new comedy series; the most prominent of these debuts is Husbands, which kicked off its second season exclusively on the new platform. Picking up where season one left off, the new episode begins with Cheeks (Brad Bell) running from the altar with his husband Brady (Sean Hemeon) chasing after him. Oh, and Seth Green plays the wedding's priest, because why not. Bell also posted the season two trailer to his personal YouTube channel: The other three debuts are also comedies, as CW Seed seems to be taking the Amazon Studios approach to content production. The most intriguing concept is Backpackers, where a...

Chris Colfer is doing a lot of press for the release of The Land of Stories 2 today, and of course he’s being asked about Cory Monteith as he goes, and he admits mourning in the public eye is difficult. “It’s difficult, because it’s hard to mourn someone, but it’s another thing to mourn someone with the world. I think a line needs to be drawn, because it’s really unnerving to get messages from people, from 12-year-olds in Nebraska telling you how to mourn and telling you how to pay respects.”

Ray Richmond contributes to Deadline’s TCA coverage. During a morning producers panel at TCA that focused on the brave new world of web television, a handful of pros held court to talk about all of the ways the Internet is changing the content game and taking the programming monopoly away from the living room. The five included Jane Espenson and Jeff Greenstein, producers of the Internet sensation Husbands (along with many network series); Mike Rosenstein and Stuart Cornfeld, exec producers of the web reality dating spoof Burning Love; and Ryan Lewis, exec producer of the web series Chosen. The beauty of fledgling form, all agreed, was how freeing the medium is in releasing writers and producers from the tyranny of their network overlords. “We are answerable only to ourselves,” boasted Greenstein, whose credits include Desperate Housewives, Friends and Will & Grace. “Yet we hold ourselves to the same standard as...

A hastily assembled panel this morning of television and film producers now working on digital series turned into one of the most interesting presentations at the TCA press tour so far, one that affirmed that web TV is the closest thing the medium has to an indie scene. Jane Espenson and Jeff Greenstein, the producers of "Husbands," Stuart Cornfeld and Mike Rosenstein, the executive producers of "Burning Love" and Ryan Lewis, the executive producer of "Chosen" were also present to talk about their ongoing online projects. While all of these web series fall under the aegis of a large brand -- "Husband," having been initially funded by Espenson, is now at CW Seed, while "Burning Love" is at Yahoo! and "Chosen" at Crackle -- a theme that came up again and again was the freedom that the medium offered as opposed to network television or studio films. "The problem is...

One of the Internet's most beloved gay web series, "Husbands" is about to return for a third season. This time, however, it's making the leap to The CW's new online platform, CW Seed. To celebrate this, The CW has released a new trailer and poster which should delight fans of the series.
"Husbands" stars Brad Bell and Sean Hemeon as a gay couple who accidentally get married during a drunken binge, and decide to stay together to prove that same-sex marriage can be successful. Producer and co-creator Jane Espenson ("Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Battlestar Galactica") along with co-creator and star Bell prove that an intelligent, well-written gay web series can work, with the show receiving accolades from publications like The New Yorker and The Onion's A.V. Club, and even being the first web series to receive a premiere at The Paley Center for Media in Los Angeles.

And the posters exist to prove it. As does a preview: Weekly episodes of the upcoming season are slated to run about eight-minutes apiece and will feature Amy Acker, Beth Grant, Michael Hogan, and Seth Green, in addition to series regulars Bell, Sean Hemeon, and Allesandra Torresani. Husbands will be joined by a handful of other online original series on CW Seed. The destination housed under Cwtv.com is the broadcast television...

Amy Acker is a very important actress in my eyes. I came to know her through the works of Joss Whedon, but since then I’ve seen her working on other projects not associated with Whedon and she’s really dazzled me. She’s just so… creepy. When she started recurring on Person of Interest, I thought she was the best thing to ever happen to that series. She has a way of delivering lines that make her seem whimsically detached from reality, as if she were living in her own little world no one else can see. And because I witnessed that performance, I know she’ll be absolutely perfect for the part she’s taken in Husbands.
It’s no surprise Acker has made her way to Husbands, a web series from Jane Espenson and Brad Bell. Through out the shows first two seasons, a number of frequent...

Since its 2011 premiere, the online series and recent CW Seed addition Husbands, a twist on the classic newlywed sitcom that's been dubbed the "world's first marriage equality comedy," has been gaining a loyal following. And its showrunner and star, Dallas native Brad Bell, has been making a cheeky name for himself in L.A. and beyond.
Bell recalled an instance where he was sitting at a coffee shop doing the usual headphone/laptop thing when an attractive man approached him. Sadly, he said, the man didn't want his phone number, but ended up boosting his ego anyway by asking him if he's the person who plays Cheeks, the controversial tabloid personality in the show who can wear sparkly necklaces like it's no one's business.
I might have guessed it: the name for Bell's alter ego spawned from what he described as people's "polite" way to describe him.
"I was a little unrefined then,...

Teen Wolf is going to a full throated howl on same-sex loving this season. We already know that Danny will be dating one of the Alpha Twins played by Max and Charlie Carver, but we didn't know how far they might take it. Jeff Davis says there will be some only-on-cable scenes between the boys. "I can't say we go to Spartacus levels, but their sex scenes are treated just like any other sex scenes you've seen on our show. I've always thought that if you present this idealized world where young gay men and women are no different from anyone else, and it's not really questioned by the other characters, maybe life starts to imitate art and you begin to see that in the real world."

Another notable web series is making its way to CW Digital. The web-conscious network is making room for Husbands, Brad Bell's award-winning comedy about the married life of two gay men. Husbands has drawn more than a million viewers on YouTube, and two of its actors earned Streamys nominations this past year. “Husbands has been a critically-acclaimed, user-friendly YouTube series for two seasons,” said Rick Haskins, Evp of marketing and digital programs at CW. “By bringing that to the CW, we hope to bring new fans over to the network and to CW broadcast shows as well.” The CW previous employed a similar strategy with Prom Queen, Vuguru's popular high school murder mystery. After seeing it draw a large audience elsewhere, CW Digital brought the series' most recent installment, Prom Queen: Homecoming, to its platform alongside old episodes.
