Moving away from regular horror, Bollywood is lately warming up to the idea of serving scares with a spot of humour. The horror comedy as a genre is suddenly in vogue among mainstream Hindi filmmakers.
The genre existed in the Hindi film industry for ages -- the old classic "Bhoot Bangla" and recent releases such as "Bhul Bhulaiyaa", "Bhootnath", "Go Goa Gone" and "Stree" come to mind. These films, however, were one-off cases. What is happening now is that Bollywood filmmakers have suddenly taken interest in the genre of horror comedy in a way that it seems like the genre is here to stay. Importantly, the new crop of films serve the funny scares with a new-age spin and a message.
We look at a few horror comedy films that are all set to hit the screens.
Bhoot Police
The film stars Saif Ali Khan, Jacqueline Fernandez, Yami Gautam and Arjun Kapoor.

New Delhi, Nov 10 (Ians) This year, Diwali fervour will stream onto your Ott screens rather than come alive on the big screen, owing to the ongoing pandemic. An explosion of new content to keep you hooked is being readied to drop on digital platforms, to mark the festival of lights.
"Post re-opening of theatres, there will be a settling period for viewers to gain trust, and confidence on the safety levels, to encourage them to step out to watch their favourite big event movie. OTTs are the best alternative in the current situation. Hence, viewership numbers may witness an upward trend on Ott platforms (during the festive season)," Chandrashekar Mantha, Partner, Deloitte India, told Ians.
In the same vein, trade analyst Girish Johar told Ians: "When it comes to the big screen, Diwali (festive season) is out of the question. So the next window in which there can be a...

ReviewRemakes are legitimate creative pursuits, but what are we gaining or losing in the process?Nadika NLet’s get some of the hygiene things out of the way, shall we? Laxmii, starring Akshay Kumar, Kiara Advani, Sharad Kelkar and a bunch of others, is a comedy-horror film, written and directed by Raghava Lawrence. It’s a (fairly faithful) remake of Raghava’s Tamil film Kanchana and has released on Disney+Hotstar. By now, we’ve had five iterations of Raghava Lawrence’s Muni/Kanchana franchise. In Tamil, that is. So no major plot lines need be discussed, but for the Hindi audience who may have strayed absentmindedly south, a quick recap. A young man is possessed by the ghosts of a trans woman, a Muslim man, and a young man with an intellectual disability. The spirits perform a few scares and stunts, then reveal the reason for possession: revenge. They...

Laxmii; Cast: Akshay Kumar, Kiara Advani, Sharad Kelkar, Rajesh Sharma, Ayesha Raza Mishra, Manu Rishi Chadha; Direction: Raghava Lawrence; Rating: * * (two stars)
By Vinayak Chakravorty
Every now and then, it seems, Akshay Kumar cannot resist giving in to the urge to churn out boring humour. The last time he did it was in Diwali last year, with Housefull 4. He is back this Diwali with a film that would make Housefull 4 seem like a classic.
The problem with Laxmii is not that it is mindless. The problem is the film is just not funny enough, despite playing to the gallery. Director Raghava Lawrence, who makes his Bollywood debut with this film, collaborates with Farhad Samji in a bid to recreate his 2011 Tamil hit Muni 2: Kanchana. What may have seemed funny nine years ago clearly fails to make the cut today.
Uh, yes -- there's the social message part.

Flix FlashbackDespite the long gap between releases, the ‘Muni’ franchise is extremely successful in Tamil cinema. Sowmya RajendranThe Muni series, directed by actor-choreographer Raghava Lawrence, is among the most successful franchises in Tamil cinema. The first film was released in 2007, the second in 2011 and the last in 2019. Despite the long gaps in between, the franchise has stayed popular with audiences, spawning several more attempts at the horror comedy genre. If box-office collection reports are to be believed, the 2019 instalment collected over Rs 100 crore. The Hindi remake of the second in the series, Kanchana, will be released as Laxmii (it was first titled Laxmmi Bomb) on Disney+ Hotstar on November 9. The lead role, which was played by Raghava himself in the original, is being reprised by Akshay Kumar. Raghava will also be making his directorial debut in Hindi with this film. Made nine years ago, Kanchana may not have aged well in all aspects.
