The Last Island is Hierro, the westernmost (and smallest) of the Spanish Canary Islands, off the northwestern coast of Africa. Due to the Gulf Stream, the island has a warm microclimate with frequent and dense fogs.

The main character is Alicia, a 10 year old girl from Barcelona. Her parents are busy during the summer, and decide to send her to the island to live with grand aunt Belinda whom she met many years ago but hardly remembers. Belinda is a practitioner of folk medicine and an expert in the medicinal properties of local plants; some think of her as a witch.

Alicia's reaction is initially negative; Belinda's house does not have running water, electricity or a separate room for her, but she is gradually absorbed by the magic of the island and its inhabitants.

The movie is not without flaws, among them some illogical script points; for instance, we learn that Alicia as a toddler was involved in a dangerous situation in the island. This makes hardly plausible her parents' decision to let her roam the same terrain unsupervised. But on the whole it is entertaining and has a fair amount of magic. Carmen Sánchez plays Alicia to perfection and the rest of the actors do a good job. A movie worth watching.
