During Professor Farnsworth's flashback, in his childhood bedroom there is a large poster showing a single element of the Periodic Table - element 117, named Farnsium (Fa). It is not made clear whether this is just personalized merchandise, or an indication that the 14 year-old Hubert Farnsworth had indeed isolated it himself and had it named after him. When the episode was made, element 117 had been isolated only two years previously but not yet named. In 2016 it was named Tennessine, after the US State of Tennessee.
First appearance of Dr. Farnsworth's parents.
As the Planet Express crew spends much of the episode in a virtual retirement community, there are many references to The Matrix (1999). The retirees' bodies are used as batteries, the crew falls through a number tunnel when entering virtual reality, and they freeze mid-air before hitting the ground as the camera rotates in "bullet time." Leela, Fry, and Bender also reference the movie's scientific inaccuracies.
In the virtual reality retirement home world, one man is watching TV late at night but it has vertical colored lines on screen and a wave tone. Early on in television broadcast history before digital signals and 24-hours-a-day broadcasts, a typical network would sign off with a patriotic American anthem and cut to vertical colored lines on screen and a wave tone, which would be shown until early the next morning when the first program of the day aired.
